A Note On The Temporary Misregistration Of Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (Oli) And Sentinel-2 Multi Spectral Instrument (Msi) Imagery, James Storey, David P. Roy, Jeffrey Masek, Ferran Gascon, Michael Choate Dec 2016

A Note On The Temporary Misregistration Of Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (Oli) And Sentinel-2 Multi Spectral Instrument (Msi) Imagery, James Storey, David P. Roy, Jeffrey Masek, Ferran Gascon, Michael Choate

GSCE Faculty Publications

The Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 sensors provide multi-spectral image data with similar spectral and spatial characteristics that together provide improved temporal coverage globally. Both systems are designed to register Level 1 products to a reference image framework, however, the Landsat-8 framework, based upon the Global Land Survey images, contains residual geolocation errors leading to an expected sensor-to-sensor misregistration of 38 m (2σ). These misalignments vary geographically but should be stable for a given area. The Landsat framework will be readjusted for consistency with the Sentinel-2 Global Reference Image, with completion expected in 2018. In the interim, users can measure Landsat-to-Sentinel tie …

Punctuated Evolution Within A Eurythermic Genus (Mesenchytraeus) Of Segmented Worms: Genetic Modification Of The Glacier Ice Worm F1f0 Atp Synthase, Shirley A. Lang Dec 2016

Punctuated Evolution Within A Eurythermic Genus (Mesenchytraeus) Of Segmented Worms: Genetic Modification Of The Glacier Ice Worm F1f0 Atp Synthase, Shirley A. Lang

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Segmented worms (Annelida) are among the most successful animal inhabitants of extreme environments worldwide. An unusual group of Mesenchytraeus worms endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America occupy geographically proximal ecozones ranging from low elevation temperate rainforests to high altitude glaciers. Along this altitudinal transect, Mesenchytraeus representatives from disparate habitat types were collected and subjected to deep mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenetic analyses. Evidence presented here employing modern bioinformatic analyses (i.e., maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, multi-species coalescent) supports a Mesenchytraeus “explosion” in the upper Miocene (5-10 million years ago) that gave rise to ice, snow and terrestrial worms, derived from …

Tapestry, Alana Medina Dec 2016

Tapestry, Alana Medina

CGU MFA Theses

The wall pieces are intentionally left to be crude, unrefined, and raw. A look at the world with a border, walking backwards to a beginning, what it was like before the traffic of the mind. Itinerant qualities along with an objective dissidence bring about an experience of tribal nomadic earthy hues. The paintings stay close to my interpretation of the earth, similar to the sculptures. Like twins born in the same embrace with contemporaneous qualities they exist together with a connection in materiality. There is a relationship between my paintings and sculptures; a mutual dependence seen and experienced together that …

Fine-Tuning An Algorithm For Semantic Document Clustering Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev Dec 2016

Fine-Tuning An Algorithm For Semantic Document Clustering Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In this article, we examine an algorithm for document clustering using a similarity graph. The graph stores words and common phrases from the English language as nodes and it can be used to compute the degree of semantic similarity between any two phrases. One application of the similarity graph is semantic document clustering, that is, grouping documents based on the meaning of the words in them. Since our algorithm for semantic document clustering relies on multiple parameters, we examine how fine-tuning these values affects the quality of the result. Specifically, we use the Reuters-21578 benchmark, which contains 11,362 newswire stories …

Police Officers’ Perceptions Of Body-Worn Cameras In The Buffalo And Rochester Police Departments, Joseph A. Gramaglia Dec 2016

Police Officers’ Perceptions Of Body-Worn Cameras In The Buffalo And Rochester Police Departments, Joseph A. Gramaglia

Public Administration Master’s Projects

Police body-worn cameras have been advanced as a solution to disparate perceptions among the citizenry, public officials, community leaders, and the police themselves in the highly contested arena of police-citizen encounters. However, as with previous technological innovations in policing, it is important that the police themselves are comfortable with the technology. This is a report of a survey conducted on police officers’ perceptions of body-worn cameras in Buffalo and Rochester police departments, which uses a survey instrument administered with the Los Angeles Police Department. This study found similar attitudes toward body cameras not only among Buffalo and Rochester police officers, …

The Digital Musing Of A History Buff, Charles W. Kann Dec 2016

The Digital Musing Of A History Buff, Charles W. Kann

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Perhaps the best part of studying Computer Science (CS) is that it is not an isolated discipline; CS exists to produce systems and applications that support the business and interests of nearly every person in the world. Any area of inquiry is open to fanciful and meaningful exploration by computer scientists. In a very real sense, the world is the oyster of those who can use digital tools developed by CS.

In his talk, Dr. Kann will explore how he uses those digital tools to advance his enthusiasm for history. The talk will highlight some of the work he has …

Improving The Adherence Of Providers To The American Academy Of Sleep Medicine Guidelines For The Evaluation, Treatment, And Management Of Obstructive Sleep, Heather Miles Dec 2016

Improving The Adherence Of Providers To The American Academy Of Sleep Medicine Guidelines For The Evaluation, Treatment, And Management Of Obstructive Sleep, Heather Miles

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purpose of this project is to increase the adherence of clinic providers to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Clinical Guidelines for the Evaluation, Management, and Longterm Care of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Adults. OSA is a chronic condition that effects from 2% to 10% of the U.S. adult population. Implications of undiagnosed OSA include excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, irritability, difficulty controlling chronic diseases including diabetes and hypertension, heart arrhythmias, gastroesophageal reflux disease, mood disorders, attention deficit disorder, and an increased potential for dementia if left untreated. A protocol was created to align providers with the clinical guidelines. Provider …

The Inspiring And Challenging Legacy Of Cyprian Davis, Osb, Bryan M. Massingale Dec 2016

The Inspiring And Challenging Legacy Of Cyprian Davis, Osb, Bryan M. Massingale

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

I had the privilege of knowing Fr. Cyprian in multiple capacities: as a fellow Black Catholic priest and our membership in the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus; as a faculty colleague at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University (New Orleans); and as a fellow Black Catholic scholar and our membership in the Black Catholic Theological Symposium. Yet these are but only the formal settings of our professional relationships. More importantly and significantly, Cyprian was for me and many others a role model, a mentor, and even a legend. I always approached him with attitudes of awe, reverence, …

Theological Anthropology In The Theology Of Marriage And Family, Joseph S. Flipper Dec 2016

Theological Anthropology In The Theology Of Marriage And Family, Joseph S. Flipper

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

The Catholic Church is faced with the challenge of theologically interpreting families that have experienced divorce, remarriage, and children outside of wedlock. The anthropology of conjugal self-gift, though valuable as an analogy to the Trinitarian communion, makes the nuclear family into an ideal. Since fewer than half of children in the U.S. live in the “traditional family,” it remains a problematic ideal. I suggest that familial and marital situations outside of the norm—often seen as problems illustrative of the breakdown of marriage in contemporary society—may be regarded in another light. A more adequate anthropology must consider how diverse marital and …

Theology: A Portrait In Black — Product Of Vatican Ii And The Civil Rights Movement; Catalyst For Future Black Catholic Scholarship, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

This paper explores the context in which the manuscript Theology: A Portrait in Black emerged and set the stage for those who were then and have continued to evolve as leaders in the Black Catholic Movement, among them, Dom. Cyprian Davis, O.S.B. Its contributors continued on to become scholars, teachers, and leaders in the U.S. Church. The book, and its contributors, inspired a generation of black Catholics and helped move the American Church on a path toward inclusion. It was both a product of its time and a beacon of hope.

The History Of Algorithmic Complexity, Audrey A. Nasar Dec 2016

The History Of Algorithmic Complexity, Audrey A. Nasar

Publications and Research

This paper provides a historical account of the development of algorithmic complexity in a form that is suitable to instructors of mathematics at the high school or undergraduate level. The study of algorithmic complexity, despite being deeply rooted in mathematics, is usually restricted to the computer science curriculum. By providing a historical account of algorithmic complexity through a mathematical lens, this paper aims to equip mathematics educators with the necessary background and framework for incorporating the analysis of algorithmic complexity into mathematics courses as early on as algebra or pre-calculus.

Reforming The Contested Convention: Rethinking The Presidential Nomination Process, Michael T. Morley Dec 2016

Reforming The Contested Convention: Rethinking The Presidential Nomination Process, Michael T. Morley

Scholarly Publications

The presidential nomination process used by the Democratic and Republican Parties is an ill-considered, unstable pastiche of competing components that generally operate in fundamentally different manners. The process is comprised of three main elements: the selection of delegates to the national convention (generally through state and district party conventions or other intraparty processes), the determination of the presidential candidates for whom those delegates will vote (generally through state-by-state primaries and caucuses), and the national convention itself.

The ritual of holding primary elections and caucuses across the nation creates the widespread public expectation that the results of those proceedings—the will of …

Ironie Et Autoréflexivité Dans Un Dimanche Au Cachot De Patrick Chamoiseau, Olga Hel-Bongo Dec 2016

Ironie Et Autoréflexivité Dans Un Dimanche Au Cachot De Patrick Chamoiseau, Olga Hel-Bongo

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Social pressures in Patrick Chamoiseau’s novel, Un dimanche au cachot, can be read not only in the theme of slavery, but also as a discourse on the narrative text itself, in which the essay plays an important role, and in the author’s denial of his art and status. Chamoiseau’s intention of subversion is omnipresent through parody or renunciation of all forms of excess. The offensive concerns, on the one hand, the memory of slavery as a social and historical institution transmitting values of order, hierarchy and traumatism in the minds. It concerns the whole narrative act and the relation between …

How Ontarians Experience The Law: An Examination On Incidence Rate, Seriousness And Response To Legal Problems, Matthew Dylag Dec 2016

How Ontarians Experience The Law: An Examination On Incidence Rate, Seriousness And Response To Legal Problems, Matthew Dylag

LLM Theses

Access to civil justice is a conceptual framework that, at its most basic, claims all people are entitled to have their legal disputes resolved fairly. However, it is currently understood that these ideals are not reflected in the day-to-day realities of ordinary people. Though scholarship has examined ways in which to better allow for meaningful access to civil justice, there is still a need for further quantitative research especially from the Canadian perspective. This paper provides an empirical foundation to this discussion by examining the 2014 Cost of Justice project survey. Specifically, it examines the incidence rate of civil legal …
