A Routing Protocol For Multisink Wireless Sensor Networks In Underground Coalmine Tunnels, Xu Xia, Zhigang Chen, Hui Liu, Huihui Wang, Feng Zeng Dec 2016

A Routing Protocol For Multisink Wireless Sensor Networks In Underground Coalmine Tunnels, Xu Xia, Zhigang Chen, Hui Liu, Huihui Wang, Feng Zeng

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Traditional underground coalmine monitoring systems are mainly based on the use of wired transmission. However, when cables are damaged during an accident, it is difficult to obtain relevant data on environmental parameters and the emergency situation underground. To address this problem, the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has been proposed. However, the shape of coalmine tunnels is not conducive to the deployment of WSNs as they are long and narrow. Therefore, issues with the network arise, such as extremely large energy consumption, very weak connectivity, long time delays, and a short lifetime. To solve these problems, in this study, …

Synthesis And Performance Of Novel Supramolecular Tools For Single-Particle Cryogenic Electron Microscopy And Drug And Gene Delivery, Kyle J. Wright

Open Access Dissertations

High-resolution biomacromolecular structure elucidation is fundamentally important to structure-based drug design and basic research into complex biochemical processes. Cryo-EM is an emerging alternative to XRD and NMR that is complementary in many ways relative to XRD and NMR. Materials approaches to cryo-EM are anticipated to greatly facilitate the cryo-EM process, allowing progress toward a more high-throughput application of cryo-EM to address challenges in structural biology. ^ Various affinity-based approaches inspired by approaches previously introduced for 2D crystallization were developed for facilitation of cryo-EM. A library of affinity lipopolymer constructs were synthesized consisting of lipopolymers of various PEG molecular weights conjugated …

Complex Glycan Utilization Preferences Of Human Gut Bacteria, Yunus Emre Tuncil Dec 2016

Complex Glycan Utilization Preferences Of Human Gut Bacteria, Yunus Emre Tuncil

Open Access Dissertations

Complex glycans, making up dietary fiber, have gained significance in recent years as they are the main energy source for the colonic microbiota which are physiologically important for the host health. Understanding glycan utilization strategies of the members of this community is essential to maximize beneficial health outcomes obtained from them. In order to investigate how the members of our gut microbiota utilize glycans and activate their respective polysaccharide utilization loci (PULs), we performed a series of time-course assays in which two model organisms, Bacteroides thetaiotamicron (Bt) and B. ovatus (Bo), were individually grown in a medium containing carbohydrates utilized …

Learning Disabilities And Academic Success, Alyssa Bethoney Dec 2016

Learning Disabilities And Academic Success, Alyssa Bethoney

Perspectives

This study examines the relationship between learning disabilities and academic success in college students. A total of 343 students from the University of New Hampshire responded to an online survey with 64 questions. The survey asked students how they would rate their overall academic performance (very good, good, bad, very bad), as well as if they had a learning disability or not. The responses were then examined to see if there was in fact a correlation between the two. The results showed that there was no correlation between learning disabilities and academic success. However, the findings were suggestive that with …

Gmo Awareness And Eating Behaviors Among College Students, Sarah Galvin Dec 2016

Gmo Awareness And Eating Behaviors Among College Students, Sarah Galvin

Perspectives

This study examines college students’ awareness of genetically modified (GM) foods and whether it alters his or her eating behaviors. This study draws on data from a sample of 318 undergraduate students enrolled at the University of New Hampshire, who completed an online survey via Qualtrics. The survey looked specifically at how aware students are of genetically modified foods, and how many GM meals he or she consumes per week. The results of this survey showed a strong correlation between higher levels of awareness and more consumption of GM food. These findings suggest that people with less awareness of GM …

Micro-Sociological Implications Of Domestic Violence On Adolescents In A School Setting, Kerri Schulz Dec 2016

Micro-Sociological Implications Of Domestic Violence On Adolescents In A School Setting, Kerri Schulz

Perspectives

Adolescent victimization and exposure to domestic violence has the ability to yield negative psychological, social, behavioral, developmental, and cognitive outcomes. Unfortunately, violence within the home is becoming increasingly prevalent. In 2007 alone, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that roughly 794,000 adolescents were either abused or neglected within their household (Sousa et al. 2011:112). Another form of violence that is becoming recognized as a widespread public-health concern is intimate partner violence. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, intimate partner violence is present when the juvenile is not directly involved and acts more as a witness to …

The Psychological Impact Of Long-Term Solitary Confinement On Inmates In The United States, Kerri Schulz Dec 2016

The Psychological Impact Of Long-Term Solitary Confinement On Inmates In The United States, Kerri Schulz

Perspectives

Psychological distress among inmates is prevalent in correctional facilities throughout the United States. Although, according to Haney (2003), severe isolation of incarcerates has been commonplace in prisons since their inception, the use of secure housing units (SHU) and the development of ‘supermax’ prisons are becoming increasingly utilized within the last several decades. Legislators have expressed the need to increase punitive measures against delinquents in response to the rising prison population (Arrigo and Bullock 2008). Thus harsher crime control policies, such as administrative and disciplinary segregation, have been established in order to limit the personal freedoms of prisoners (Arrigo and Bullock …

Spiritual Renovation Through Accountability: A Contemporary Look At John Wesley's Class Meeting And His Admonition To Watch Over One Another In Love, Robert Marshall Dec 2016

Spiritual Renovation Through Accountability: A Contemporary Look At John Wesley's Class Meeting And His Admonition To Watch Over One Another In Love, Robert Marshall

Doctor of Ministry

The dissertation asserts that Christ-focused small groups, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, can be a primary means of spiritual transformation while developing a sense of belonging in the Body of Christ. Without these small groups, public Christian worship can be little more than sentimentality. The term, small groups, describes small gatherings of Christ’s followers who “watch over one another in love that they may help each other to work out their salvation.”

Section 1 introduces the topic of a disconnect between the Church’s promise to be a transforming community and the spiritual emptiness and loneliness asserted by many. Three challenges …

Extending The Table: A Strategic Guide Of Missional Renewal For A Declining Congregation, Phillip Vaden Faig Dec 2016

Extending The Table: A Strategic Guide Of Missional Renewal For A Declining Congregation, Phillip Vaden Faig

Doctor of Ministry

The Lord took Ezekiel to the Valley of Dry Bones and asked him, “Son of Man, can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3) Many churches in the large metropolitan cities of North America are looking over the Valley of Dry Ministries and asking essentially the same question, “Can these ministries live again?” The decline of the church in large metropolitan cities of the United States has been dramatic. It is not an unusual sight to drive through a major city and see church buildings that were once filled with congregants either shuttered and repurposed or with only a small remnant of …

‘All About That Bass’ And Photoshopping A Model’S Waist: Introducing Body Image Law, Marilyn Bromberg, Cindy Halliwell Dec 2016

‘All About That Bass’ And Photoshopping A Model’S Waist: Introducing Body Image Law, Marilyn Bromberg, Cindy Halliwell

The University of Notre Dame Australia Law Review

When women see images of extremely thin women, their body image may suffer as a result. Their poor body image can develop into an eating disorder. A handful of governments took action to try to stop models who have BMIs below a specific number from working and/or require a warning on photoshopped images (that modify models to make them appear thinner). The Authors of this article (“Authors”) created a term to apply to this newly developing area of law: Body Image Law. The Authors argue that there are some areas in which the actions that governments took in Body Image …

Nucelotide Substitution Rates In Hantavirus Cd8+ T-Cell Epitopes, Brian Gerald Sikes Dec 2016

Nucelotide Substitution Rates In Hantavirus Cd8+ T-Cell Epitopes, Brian Gerald Sikes

Graduate Theses

Hantaviruses pathogenic to humans are exclusive to rodents. Typically each hantavirus is associated with only one host species. Due to their close association, the geographical distributions are the same. Old World species, such as Hantaan hantavirus and Puumala hantavirus, induce symptoms described as the Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). The New World hantaviruses, such as Andes hantavirus and Sin Nombre hantavirus, share a suite of symptoms that have been described as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). In this study, 16 well-characterized cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) epitopes of the nucleocapsid (N) protein were identified from the literature.

These 16 …

Combat Psychology: Learning To Kill In The U.S. Military, 1947-2012, Patrick Mckinnie Dec 2016

Combat Psychology: Learning To Kill In The U.S. Military, 1947-2012, Patrick Mckinnie

Graduate Theses

In his 1947 work Men Against Fire: The Problem of Battle Command, historian S. L. A. Marshall convinced the U.S. government and military of the critical need for improved techniques in combat psychology. However, his more fundamental assertion that soldiers needed to be trained to overcome an innate psychological resistance to killing would prompt some in the military as well as scholars and medical experts to examine the heart and mind of the soldier in combat. As a result, an emergent science called killology became a critical component in the U.S. military’s quest to better train soldiers for the …

Til Death Did Us Part, The Story Of The Health And Death Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mary E. Edgecomb Dec 2016

Til Death Did Us Part, The Story Of The Health And Death Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mary E. Edgecomb

Graduate Theses

The awe of celebrity, including presidents, creates the impression of beings who are larger than life, without the problems of the common man. Franklin D. Roosevelt, unbeknownst to many Americans, had significant health issues. These health issues predate his paralytic illness and worsened during his presidency. Efforts to maintain his image as the unconquerable president of the United Sates led to concealment of these problems and, in turn, negatively impacted his medical care. While most previous studies focused on individual health issues, this research will show a continuum of medical problems that not only impacted his presidency but also were …

Establishing A Novel Culture System Using 3d Printing To Induce Osteogenesis In Mc3t3-E! Osteoblasts, Lisa Carder Dec 2016

Establishing A Novel Culture System Using 3d Printing To Induce Osteogenesis In Mc3t3-E! Osteoblasts, Lisa Carder

Graduate Theses

Whole organ tissue engineering represents a potential solution to the problem of organ shortage and host rejection; however, the process of producing a three-dimensional, functional organ is extremely complex. Research has used three-dimensional printing in order to combat the cost and time constraints that come with whole organ studies. This project created 3D scaffolds based on the trabecular portion of a sheep talus. Using these raw materials, pre-osteoblasts were injected onto the scaffold to test their proliferation within the 3D space. The purpose of this study was to create a three dimensional environment that was able to be coated and …

People Sitting In The Dark: Stories, Trent Chabot Dec 2016

People Sitting In The Dark: Stories, Trent Chabot

Graduate Theses

In my story collection, People Sitting in the Dark: Stories, I explore the ever troubling theme of how to cope with loss, and occasionally, how to cope with not losing when one is so accustomed to it. Though some of my stories are connected with reappearing characters, they are not all written in such a way. Characters in the background of one story may be given the narration of one later in the story, thus changing how the reader views the character through difference perspectives. I wanted to explore how point of view can drastically change the sympathy and empathy …

Adaptive Biasing Cell Association In Ffr Aided Multi-Tier Heterogeneous Networks Under Dynamic Load Variation, Didarul Alam, Tashikur Rahman, Shakil Ahmed, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury Dec 2016

Adaptive Biasing Cell Association In Ffr Aided Multi-Tier Heterogeneous Networks Under Dynamic Load Variation, Didarul Alam, Tashikur Rahman, Shakil Ahmed, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research

Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) adopting fractional frequency reuse (FFR) improves cell coverage, network capacity, efficiency, assures higher data rates, and better quality of service (QoS) for next generation wireless networks. However they fail to handle dynamic load variation. So we attempt biasing cell association (BCA) to offload user from macrocell to small cell base stations (SCBs) to overcome capacity reduction and throughput degradation. It is based on range expansion of SCBSs by adding a positive bias to the reference signal received power (RSRP). In this paper we propose a FFR aided twin layer HetNet with an adaptive biasing scheme for load …

Ecology Of Sceloporus Consobrinus Populations In Two Thermally Different Habitats, Alyssa N. Bangs Dec 2016

Ecology Of Sceloporus Consobrinus Populations In Two Thermally Different Habitats, Alyssa N. Bangs

Theses and Dissertations from 2016

Life history traits in ectotherms are tied to environmental temperature, and many species exhibit morphological and behavioral differences in thermally different habitats. Although these differences are generally attributed to differences in thermal regimes between habitats, most prior research on this topic has been performed across latitudinal or altitudinal gradients. Consequently, I wanted to determine if differences in morphology and behavior are also present among populations of Sceloporus consobrinus that inhabit thermally different habitats at the same latitude and elevation. In this study, I chose sites that fit one of two habitat types: warmer open rocky habitat and cooler, more vegetated …

Strindberg's Miss Julie: An Exploitation Of Genderlect And Liberatory Pedagogy, Jenava Moreau Harris Dec 2016

Strindberg's Miss Julie: An Exploitation Of Genderlect And Liberatory Pedagogy, Jenava Moreau Harris

Theses and Dissertations from 2016

Navigating the complexities of naturalist dramatic literature proves to be a challenge under the best circumstances. How do we attempt to highlight the major themes and tenants of Naturalism through an educational theatre lens? What happens when the show is then double cast due to indecisiveness? How do we handle actors with personal trauma influencing their ability to work with vulnerability and physical contact? These questions and others were answered throughout this master’s thesis production of Miss Julie by August Strindberg. Through a process guided by social research and dramaturgical attention to detail, this director was able to explore a …
