Puerto Rican Households In The U.S., Eric Franqui-Rivera Dec 2016

Puerto Rican Households In The U.S., Eric Franqui-Rivera

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

In 2014 there were an estimated 1.56 million Puerto Rican households in the United States. These households accounted for 1.3 percent of all 116.2 million households in the U.S. and 11 percent of all 14.1 million Hispanic households in the U.S. Married male-female couples and single female households each accounted for over a third of Puerto Rican households (36.4% and 36.5%, respectively) with the third largest householder group being that of single males (17.9%). Unmarried male-female and same-sex households, including married and unmarried, accounted for 8.5 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively, of Puerto Rican households in the U.S.

Evolution Of Complexity In Gene Regulatory Networks During Host-Parasite Coevolution, Jeewoen Shin Dec 2016

Evolution Of Complexity In Gene Regulatory Networks During Host-Parasite Coevolution, Jeewoen Shin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Robustness, defined as tolerance to perturbations such as mutations and environmental fluctuations, is pervasive in biological systems. However, robustness often coexists with its counterpart, evolvability - the ability of perturbations to generate new phenotypes. Previous models of gene regulatory network evolution have shown that robustness evolves under stabilizing selection, but in more realistic scenarios such as coevolution, it may be advantageous to evolve sensitivity, i.e. for some mutations to change the phenotype. Furthermore, it is unclear how robustness and evolvability will emerge in common coevolutionary scenarios. In this dissertation, we consider three different two-species models of coevolution involving one host …

Two Essays In Quantitative Finance, Ke Wang Dec 2016

Two Essays In Quantitative Finance, Ke Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores two interesting problems in quantitative finance. In the first part, we consider the detection methods on structural breaks that are characterized by a credit rating transition matrix based on homogeneous Markov process model. Recent studies have shown that firms’ credit rating migration process is not stationary and may have structural breaks. Assuming the generator of probability transition matrices of firms’ credit rating to be piecewise constant and the jump time of generator corresponds to the structural break time in the pattern of firms’ rating migrations, we study several types of sequential surveillance rules for early detection. The …

Computational Relativistic Electrodynamics: New Algorithms, Parallel Software, And Applications To Accelerator Design, Kwang Min Yu Dec 2016

Computational Relativistic Electrodynamics: New Algorithms, Parallel Software, And Applications To Accelerator Design, Kwang Min Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A parallel, fully relativistic, 3D electromagnetic particle-in-cell (EM-PIC) code, named SPACE, has been developed for the simulation of relativistic particle beams, beam - plasma interaction, and plasma chemistry. New algorithms such as atomic processes in plasma, proper boundary conditions, and an efficient method for highly-relativistic beams in non-relativistic plasma have been developed. Algorithms for atomic process include ionization of neutral atoms by electron impact, recombination of plasma, and electron attachment on dopants in dense neutral gases. The code has been used for the simulation of processes in high-pressure radio-frequency (RF) cavity (HPRF) program at Fermilab. Advanced numerical simulations resolve all …

Essays On The Medicare Enrollment And Medicare Costs Of Older Americans, Yuanyuan Deng Dec 2016

Essays On The Medicare Enrollment And Medicare Costs Of Older Americans, Yuanyuan Deng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation consists of two chapters. The 1999 to 2010 data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey are used in this dissertation. The first chapter empirically analyze the role of labor supply and Medicare secondary payer on Medicare costs, taking into account the recent evolution of labor supply and the implementation of the 1983 Social Security reform. The labor force participation rate of Americans 65 years and older has sharply increased since the mid-1990s. These increases have been accompanied by an increasing number of Older Americans covered by current employer-provided health insurance plans. For those covered workers, Medicare becomes secondary …

Essays On The Spillover Effects Of Information Arrivals In Security Trading, Zhenning Wang Dec 2016

Essays On The Spillover Effects Of Information Arrivals In Security Trading, Zhenning Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The mixture distribution hypothesis is widely used to explain the behavior of returns and volumes in security trading in single-security settings, and the unobservable information arrival process in models based on this hypothesis is the key factor that determines the conditional distributions of returns and volumes. In order to investigate whether the information arrival processes of different securities may interact with each other, in the first part of this dissertation I extended the framework of mixture distribution hypothesis to a multiple-security setting, in which the unobservable information arrival processes of different securities may potentially interact with each other through vector …

Log-Linear Model Based Tree And Latent Variable Model For Count Data, Yuan Zhao Dec 2016

Log-Linear Model Based Tree And Latent Variable Model For Count Data, Yuan Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Events that occur randomly over time or space result in count data. Poisson models are widely used for analyses. However, simple log-linear forms are often insufficient for complex relationship between variables. Thus we study tree-structured log-linear models and latent variables models for count data. First, we consider extending Poisson regression for independent observations. Decision trees exhibit the advantage of interpretation. Constant fits are too simple to interpret within strata nonetheless. We hence propose to embed log-linear models to decision trees, and use negative binomial distribution for overdispersion. Second, we consider latent variable models for point process observation in neuroscience. Neurons …

Classification Of Fetal Heart Rate Signals By Deep Learning, Xuan Chen Dec 2016

Classification Of Fetal Heart Rate Signals By Deep Learning, Xuan Chen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the course of delivery, a fetus may suffer from oxygen deficiency due to the intensive pressure changes. Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) system has been widely used in obstetrics, to provide continuous information to clinicians for making decisions and in preparing for delivery. There has been many efforts to build automated systems to analyze fetal heart rates (FHRs) and offer clinical supports. In this thesis, our goal is to introduce the most recent and popular machine learning method, deep learning, for FHR classification. We first introduce the preliminaries of FHR classification methods and the database used in our experiments. Then, …

Investigation Of The Series Connection Of Silicon Photomultipliers For Reduced Noise Readout In Cryogenic Environments, Eric Raguzin Dec 2016

Investigation Of The Series Connection Of Silicon Photomultipliers For Reduced Noise Readout In Cryogenic Environments, Eric Raguzin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are devices capable of achieving the single photon resolution required over the large area $(4 \ m^2)$ required for the next Enriched Xenon Observatory (nEXO) experiment. In addition, SiPMs function with lower noise at cryogenic temperatures in the range that will be used in the full scale experiment, demonstrating a significant drop in the noise of the sensor. nEXO requires a large photosensitive area inside the time projection chamber (TPC) due to the increased mass of Xenon expected when compared with the previous EXO experiment. Practically implementing a photosensitive area of this scale requires consolidation of multiple …

Sequential Monte Carlo Methods For Inference And Prediction Of Latent Time-Series, Inigo Urteaga Dec 2016

Sequential Monte Carlo Methods For Inference And Prediction Of Latent Time-Series, Inigo Urteaga

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the era of information-sensing mobile devices, the Internet-of-Things and Big Data, research on advanced methods for extracting information from data has become extremely critical. One important task in this area of work is the analysis of time-varying phenomena, observed sequentially in time. This endeavor is relevant in many applications, where the goal is to infer the dynamics of events of interest described by the data, as soon as new data-samples are acquired. This dissertation is on novel methods for sequential inference and prediction of latent time-series. We assume that a sequence of observations is a function of a hidden …

Design Of A Novel Glitch-Free Integrated Clock Gating Cell For High Reliability, Tasnuva Noor Dec 2016

Design Of A Novel Glitch-Free Integrated Clock Gating Cell For High Reliability, Tasnuva Noor

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A novel glitch-free integrated clock gating (ICG) cell is developed and demonstrated in 45 nm CMOS technology. The proposed cell is more reliable as it produces an uninterrupted gated clock signal in cases where glitches occur in the enable signal during clock transitions. A detailed comparison of the proposed cell with the existing integrated clock gating cells is also presented. Glitch-free operation (and therefore high reliability) is achieved at the expense of larger power and delay, as quantified for 45 nm CMOS technology. Several design issues and different glitch characteristics are also discussed. The proposed ICG cell is shown to …

Turned On: A Study Of Sexuality In American Counterculture Music, 1960-2016, Sean Burton Dec 2016

Turned On: A Study Of Sexuality In American Counterculture Music, 1960-2016, Sean Burton

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Since the 1960s the American counterculture has been stoked by socio-political and lifestyle movements with a mix of noble ideas, rebellious fervor, and at times even a degree of madness. These movements have correctly been attributed to events worthy of protest and activism, such as the Vietnam War, racial injustice, sexism, and economic inequality, as well as less noble and less developed concerns. However, the power of counterculture music is that it links these causes to a much more universal element of life: sexuality. From the outlandishness of the music of the 1960s, came the trend of sexuality being part …

Willful Forgetting: €Œwhite Indians,€ Trauma, And Relationality In American Historical Literature, Kathleen Hankinson Dec 2016

Willful Forgetting: €Œwhite Indians,€ Trauma, And Relationality In American Historical Literature, Kathleen Hankinson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This work proposes a critical vocabulary for the study of American historical literature and Native American literature in the light of the genocide of Native America. Considering this genocide in terms of trauma theory (including perpetrator trauma) and relationality theory, it becomes clear that a “working-through†for the non-native postgenerations who have unintentionally inherited stolen lands (along with a self/other construction of non-Native and Native Americans) is ethically and socially desirable. In transcending the dominant self/other paradigm, one’s orientation to US American and Native American historical literature is not about possessing knowledge of these histories and literatures, but rather knowing …

Recapturing Camelot: Nostalgia For The Failed Ideals Of Arthurian Legend, Katherine Marie Miscavige Dec 2016

Recapturing Camelot: Nostalgia For The Failed Ideals Of Arthurian Legend, Katherine Marie Miscavige

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines nostalgia for the ideals of King Arthur’s court as represented in medieval versions of Arthurian legend. Nostalgia has typically been considered a modern phenomenon and has often been disparagingly associated with sentimentality or strict conservatism; however, this project aims to show that nostalgia can be a useful critical framework for understanding medieval approaches to romance, particularly the retellings of familiar tales like the stories of King Arthur and his knights. Using a chronological study of significant medieval Arthurian retellings, I argue that both the ideals themselves and the sense of nostalgia evoked are malleable and dependent on …

Gwendolyn Nisbett, Gwendolyn Editha Nisbett Dec 2016

Gwendolyn Nisbett, Gwendolyn Editha Nisbett

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As You Like It and Hamlet have as a central consideration the need for the restoration of order and the establishment of good governance. A comparative analysis of the roles of the clowns in both plays, using primary and secondary data, reveals that they expose a corrupt political directorate and offer social and political commentary through dialogue, soliloquies, asides and other forms of direct communication with the audience. As You Like It is a romantic comedy in which the usurping Duke causes the courtiers to flee from tyranny by going into exile in the forest of Arden. Touchstone, the jester, …

The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet | The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet, Kara Palumbo Dec 2016

The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet | The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet, Kara Palumbo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The following work analyzes Shakespeare’s use of Christian doctrine in his 17th century drama, Hamlet. The focus is to see how and for what reasons Shakespeare used his knowledge of Christian texts to construct Hamlet’s dialogue and setting. This research draws mainly from Shakespeare’s primary sources, the Geneva Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. Observing Hamlet through a biblical lens brings to light topics such as, the existence of purgatory and the rites of passage to heaven or hell. Taking into consideration Shakespeare’s contemporary society, views on topics such as purgatory, suicide, and confession, would have been mixed. Therefore, …

Traumedy: Dark Comedic Negotiations Of Trauma In Contemporary American Literature, Benjamin Nathan Schachtman Dec 2016

Traumedy: Dark Comedic Negotiations Of Trauma In Contemporary American Literature, Benjamin Nathan Schachtman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This project explores how dark comedy negotiates between varying and paradoxically conflicting reactions to traumatic experience. These reactions unfold in two ways: the specific moments of “punctual trauma†and the “structural traumas,†wherein illusory structures of the ego – including sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and the sense of immortality – are dissembled and deconstructed. Thus, the traumas represented – in novels by Joseph Heller, Gustav Hasford, Gore Vidal, Chuck Palahniuk, Gary Shteyngart, Thomas King, and Robert Coover; films by Mike Nichols, Stanley Kubrick, and David Fincher – concern characters facing a seemingly oppositional choice between “witnessing,†providing “testimony†about the …

Margery Kempe: A Mirror Of Change In Late-Medieval England, Janet Tuthill Dec 2016

Margery Kempe: A Mirror Of Change In Late-Medieval England, Janet Tuthill

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Often considered the earliest autobiography written in English, The Book of Margery Kempe expresses social and religious commentary. This dissertation discusses Kempe’s life story as it mirrors the religious and social changes occurring in late-medieval England. I view Margery Kempe as a real person who was very involved in the production of her book, that the scribes who assisted her played an important part in shaping the text, but that we mainly hear Kempe’s voice. My view is that the work is neither a straightforward presentation of lived experience nor pure fiction, but based upon the real-life experiences of an …

Essays On Value Creation In Online Marketplaces, Warut Khern-Am-Nuai

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three essays that study the transformative impact of new information technologies under three specific contexts using both empirical and theoretical approaches. Chapter 2 examines the online review system, which is the new type of information technology that replaces the traditional word-of-mouth communication. Particularly, we study the practice of the platform owner that uses monetary incentives to attract reviewers. The research problem is important as firms, which seek to strengthen their online review platforms, have considered various forms of incentives, including extrinsic rewards, to encourage users to write reviews. We encountered a natural experiment design where one …

Lagrangian Analysis Of Vector And Tensor Fields: Algorithmic Foundations And Applications In Medical Imaging And Computational Fluid Dynamics, Zi'ang Ding

Open Access Dissertations

Both vector and tensor fields are important mathematical tools used to describe the physics of many phenomena in science and engineering. Effective vector and tensor field visualization techniques are therefore needed to interpret and analyze the corresponding data and achieve new insight into the considered problem. This dissertation is concerned with the extraction of important structural properties from vector and tensor datasets. Specifically, we present a unified approach for the characterization of distinguished manifolds that form the skeleton of vector and tensor fields and play a key role in understanding their properties.

This dissertation makes several important contributions in this …

Relationship-Building Through Embodied Feedback: Teacher-Student Alignment In Writing Conferences, Elena Shvidko Dec 2016

Relationship-Building Through Embodied Feedback: Teacher-Student Alignment In Writing Conferences, Elena Shvidko

Open Access Dissertations

Over the last two decades, an impressive amount of work has been done on the interaction that takes place during writing conferences (Ewert, 2009). However, most previous studies focused on the instructional aspects of conference discourse, without considering its affective components. Yet conferences are by no means emotionally neutral (Witt & Kerssen-Griep, 2011), as they involve evaluation of student work, correction, directions for improvement, and even criticism—that is, they involve potentially face-threatening acts. Therefore, it is important for teachers to know how to conference with students in non-threatening and affiliative ways.

The present study examines 1) the interactional resources, including …

A Sharp Interface Isogeometric Strategy For Moving Boundary Problems, Tao Song Dec 2016

A Sharp Interface Isogeometric Strategy For Moving Boundary Problems, Tao Song

Open Access Dissertations

The proposed methodology is first utilized to model stationary and propagating cracks. The crack face is enriched with the Heaviside function which captures the displacement discontinuity. Meanwhile, the crack tips are enriched with asymptotic displacement functions to reproduce the tip singularity. The enriching degrees of freedom associated with the crack tips are chosen as stress intensity factors (SIFs) such that these quantities can be directly extracted from the solution without a-posteriori integral calculation.

As a second application, the Stefan problem is modeled with a hybrid function/derivative enriched interface. Since the interface geometry is explicitly defined, normals and curvatures can be …

A Structural Etiology Of The U.S. Constitution, Charles Edward Andrew Lincoln Iv Dec 2016

A Structural Etiology Of The U.S. Constitution, Charles Edward Andrew Lincoln Iv

Student Scholarship

This article offers an interpretation of the problems addressed by and the eventual purpose of the United States government. Simultaneously, it seeks to analyze and explain the continued three-part structure of the United States federal government as outlined in the Constitution. Subsequently I define the three parts of the federal government—judiciary, executive, and legislative—as explained through the lens of the Platonic paradigm of (logos = word = law), (thymos = external driving spirit = executive), and (eros = general welfare = legislative) extrapolated from Plato’s dialogues.

First, the article establishes Plato’s theory of the three-part Platonic soul as a major …
