We present a de Haas-van Alphen study of the Fermi surface of the low-temperature antiferromagnet CeZn11 and its nonmagnetic analog LaZn11, measured by torque magnetometry up to fields of 33T and at temperatures down to 320mK. Both systems possess similar de Haas-van Alphen frequencies, with three clear sets of features -- ranging from 50T to 4kT -- corresponding to three bands of a complex Fermi surface, with an expected fourth band also seen weakly in CeZn11. The effective masses of the charge carriers are very light ( < 1me) in LaZn11 but a factor …

An Examination Of Academic Advising Experiences Of Undergraduate Students Enrolled In Face-To-Face And Online Courses When Considering Gender, Ethnicity, First Generation Status, And Pell Grant Status, Dorothy Moss Hale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Higher attrition rates among students in online as compared to face-to-face (F2F) degrees are a major concern in higher education. Consequently, many institutions are rethinking academic advising to support the retention and graduation of F2F and online students. This study analyzed existing data collected from 522 undergraduate seniors at a large public urban university who completed the 2014 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Academic Advising Module. Three research questions guided the study: 1) To what degree, if any, does the frequency of interaction with academic advisors reported by undergraduate students differ on the basis of course format (face-to-face vs. …

The liquid inside a solid material is one of the most common composite materials in nature. The interface between solid–liquid plays an important role in unique deformation. Here, model systems of two polymers (polydimethylsiloxane–polyvinylidenefluoride) are used to make sphere of solid with liquid inside it.

After over thirty data breaches spanning the third and fourth quarter of 2012, Forbes magazine labeled the summer of 2012 as “The Summer of the Data Breach.” Four years later, businesses across multiple industries have suffered brand-image damage and paid millions of dollars in remedial expenses; we are living in the era of the mega breach. In 2014, companies such as Target, Home Depot, JP Morgan Chase, Anthem, Sony, UPS, Jimmy John’s, Kmart, Neiman Marcus, Community Health Systems, and the White House suffered data breaches. The Home Depot breach alone resulted in the loss of “56 million credit card accounts,” …
Automated Barrel Cleaner, Brian C. Gumino
Automated Barrel Cleaner, Brian C. Gumino
Honors Capstones
Numerous industrial companies use 55 and 30 gallon barrels to hold, transport, and dispense liquids and chemicals. Due to this there are many businesses that will reuse their barrels. In order to reuse their barrels, they must clean them to ensure there is no cross contamination from contents that were in the barrel before placing new contents in them. This is normally a time consuming process for most businesses depending on the material that was inside the barrel. With the hefty time relationship related to cleaning barrels most companies either dispose of their barrels, either legally or sometimes illegally, or …

Goal modeling has long been used in the literature to model and reason about system requirements, constraints within the domain and environment, and stakeholders' goals. Goal model analysis helps stakeholders answer 'what if' questions enabling them to make tradeoff decisions about their project requirements. However, questions concerning the evolution over time of stakeholder requirements or changes in actor intentionality are not explicitly addressed by current approaches. In this paper, we tackle this problem by presenting a method for specifying changes in intentions over time, and a technique that uses simulation for asking a variety of 'what if' questions about such …

Citizen-Led Urban Agriculture And The Politics Of Spatial Reappropriation In Montreal, Quebec, Claire Emmanuelle Bach
Citizen-Led Urban Agriculture And The Politics Of Spatial Reappropriation In Montreal, Quebec, Claire Emmanuelle Bach
Dissertations and Theses
Urban Agriculture (UA) has been practiced in Montreal, Quebec for well over a century. In the last five years or so, a renewed enthusiasm for UA has manifested itself in the form of citizen-led UA projects. The latter are often established in residual spaces, from vacant lots to sidewalks, and alleyways. These more spontaneous and informal UA practices point to a shift in how urban inhabitants perceive and use urban space. Through a case study of informal UA projects in Montreal, QC, this work brings attention to the dynamics surrounding the establishment of citizen-led UA projects, paying special attention to …

Motivation In Mathematics, Andre J. Richmond
Motivation In Mathematics, Andre J. Richmond
Honors Capstones
I conducted a review of existing mathematics education research on students’ motivation related to mathematics learning. My initial research questions were: “What are the constructs of student motivation as related to mathematics learning?” and “How do they these constructs inform mathematical teaching practice?” The research method that I decided to used was secondary research. I found that motivation can be understood in terms of self-efficacy, cognitive engagement, skill development, achievement motivation, self-regulation, and mindset about mathematics. Students’ unproductive beliefs can undermine their progress in mathematics learning. Motivation is what drives a person to do something. As a future teacher, I …

Abstract The process of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is often associated with poor oral intake and as a result, nutritional status declines. Although it might seem obvious that optimal nutrition is likely to improve outcomes of transplantation, there are no clinical data that directly support this assumption. It is also unclear whether artificial nutrition support (ANS) should be provided as enteral tube feeding (ETF) or parenteral nutrition (PN). In this study we analysed day 100 non-relapse mortality (NRM) and incidence and severity of acute graft versus host disease (GvHD) according to both the route and adequacy of nutritional intake …

Donald Trump won Ohio’s 18 Electoral College votes by a margin of more than 446,000 ballots (2,841,005 for Trump versus 2,394,164 for Clinton). Some observers have suggested that low voter turn-out among African American and Hispanic/Latino residents in urbanized counties played an important role in Trump’s Ohio victory.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Based Structure From Motion Biomass Inventory Estimates, Emily Jane Bedell
Dissertations and Theses
Riparian vegetation restoration efforts demand cost effective, accurate, and replicable impact assessments. In this thesis a method is presented using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with a GoPro digital camera to collect photogrammetric data of a 2.02-acre riparian restoration. A three-dimensional point cloud was created from the photos using Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques. The point cloud was analyzed and compared to traditional, ground-based monitoring techniques. Ground truth data collected using the status-quo approach was collected on 6.3% of the study site and averaged across the entire site to report stem heights in stems/acre in three height classes, 0-3 …

Our research explores CUNY students’ lived experiences using digital technology in and out of class, on and off campus. Beyond checking grades or emailing a professor, students use digital technology to create space and time for their schoolwork. However, technology can also impede students’ opportunities for making space and time. Understanding how students use digital technology is crucial for colleges and universities to better support students in their academic work.
