Making The Classroom More Student-Centered, Alyssa R. Johnson
Honors Capstones
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of behavior management techniques in the classroom and to determine if students learn best in a student-centered classroom or a teacher-centered classroom. This exploration through interviews and research, will help to find out how teachers create a positive learning environment for a diverse group of students in the classroom and how a student-centered technique versus how a teacher-centered technique works in the classroom. In my opinion, if teachers do not set up a positive learning environment for all students in their classroom, then they will not be in control of …

Formulating A Pharmacy Collection Without A Prescription, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker, Linda Galloway
Formulating A Pharmacy Collection Without A Prescription, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker, Linda Galloway
Library Articles and Research
Librarians without a background in the health sciences were tasked with building a collection to support a new pharmacy school at a traditionally liberal arts institution. Despite little subject expertise, the team assessed current holdings, conducted a review of recommended resources, and collaborated with faculty to prioritize acquisitions to support the developing program as funds became available. The hire of a health sciences librarian provided new opportunities for assessment and for continued collecting. Altogether, this process allowed for the creation of recommended best practices that can be adopted by any librarian procuring resources to support new health science programs.

Solid-state NMR and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are presented to help elucidate the molecular secondary structure of poly(Gly-Gly-X), which is one of the most common structural repetitive motifs found in orb-weaving dragline spider silk proteins. The combination of NMR and computational experiments provides insight into the molecular secondary structure of poly(Gly-Gly-X) segments and provides further support that these regions are disordered and primarily non-β-sheet. Furthermore, the combination of NMR and MD simulations illustrate the possibility for several secondary structural elements in the poly(Gly-Gly-X) regions of dragline silks, including β-turns, 3

Dietary Effects On Behavior And Performance For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jacqueline A. Bartolai
Dietary Effects On Behavior And Performance For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jacqueline A. Bartolai
Honors Capstones
With autism spectrum disorder (ASD) becoming more prevalent, the more we are understanding the manifestations correlated with this disorder; one of which being the dietary issues that are common with those with ASD. This is an important topic to discuss with those with ASD, parents and family members of someone with ASD, and medical providers. To further investigate this topic, this paper will highlight background information about what ASD is, what gastrointestinal issues those with ASD typically have, dietary approaches that are commonly used, and the role that nutrition and diet plays for occupational therapists helping to treat those with …

Here And There: Code Switching And The Politics Of Spanish-Language Identity In Latina Women's Writing, Marilou. Terrones
Honors Capstones
Language is as much a form of communication as it is a form of identity. This research focuses on Latino interactions where code-switching is used, revealing who the characters are and what is significant to them. I analyzed when and how often characters turned to CS during their interactions, so that I would understand why. I learned that CS occurs in between languages and dialects. CS, then, isn't only used by speakers who include multiple languages in each sentence; it is also used when we change the tone of our speech. It's important to recognize that CS is not a …
Investigating The Effects Of Environmental Treatment On Social Stress, Depression And Anxiety, Blessy Johnson
Investigating The Effects Of Environmental Treatment On Social Stress, Depression And Anxiety, Blessy Johnson
Honors Capstones
In the proposed study we will be investigating how age affects the responsiveness to EE, willingness to exercise, and depression- and anxiety-like behaviors in prairie voles that are subjected to social isolation. Previous research findings show that EE helps in the prevention and remediation of social isolation induced depressive and anxiety related behaviors (Van Praag, Kempermann & Gage, 2000).Therefore, in this study we are hypothesizing that the older prairie voles will be less responsive to EE when compared to younger animals because of less adaptability and flexibility. In addition, older voles will show less remediation of social isolation induced depressive …

An Assessment Of Implementation Of Community - Oriented Primary Care In Kenyan Family Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education Programmes, Ian Nelligan, Jacob Shabani, Stephanie Taché, Gulnaz Mohamoud, Megan Mahoney
Family Medicine, East Africa
Background and objectives: Family medicine postgraduate programmes in Kenya are examining the benefits of Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) curriculum, as a method to train residents in population-based approaches to health care delivery. Whilst COPC is an established part of family medicine training in the United States, little is known about its application in Kenya. We sought to conduct a qualitative study to explore the development and implementation of COPC curriculum in the first two family medicine postgraduate programmes in Kenya.
Method: Semi-structured interviews of COPC educators, practitioners, and academic stakeholders and focus groups of postgraduate students were conducted with COPC …

The paramagnetic metallic phase of the Anderson-Hubbard model (AHM) is investigated using a nonperturbative local moment approach within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory with a typical medium. Our focus is on the breakdown of the metallic phase near the metal-insulators transition as seen in the single-particle spectra, scattering rates, and the associated distribution of Kondo scales. We demonstrate the emergence of a universal, underlying low-energy scale, TKpeak. This lies close to the peak of the distribution of Kondo scales obtained within the metallic phase of the paramagnetic AHM. Spectral dynamics for energies ωTKpeak display Fermi liquid universality crossing over …
