Droplet Impact On Dry, Superhydrophobic Surfaces With Micro-Scale Roughness Elements, Nadine Boufous
Droplet Impact On Dry, Superhydrophobic Surfaces With Micro-Scale Roughness Elements, Nadine Boufous
Theses and Dissertations
Most aircraft accidents are caused by technical problems or weather-related issues. One cause of weather-related incidents is inlight icing, which can induce negative performance characteristics and endanger the operation of an airplane. Various researchers investigating the problem of inlight icing have proposed ice-phobic coatings as one viable solution. For this purpose, it is critical to study the behavior of a droplet impact on different types of surfaces. As an alternative to physical testing, three-dimensional numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics offers a promising strategy for evaluating the effects of surface characteristics. Using the volume of fluid method, three simulations of …

Effect Of Microstructure On The Fatigue Behavior Of Type 304l Stainless Steel Including Mean Strain And Cyclic Rate Effects, Jonathan W. Pegues
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the effects of stress and strain rate on cyclic deformation, secondary hardening, martensitic phase transformation, crack initiation, and fatigue behavior of type 304L stainless steel are examined. A series of load and strain controlled uniaxial zero and non-zero mean strain fatigue tests were conducted with varying frequencies in order to investigate the effect of loading rate on fatigue behavior. The volume fraction of martensite was quantified for several tests using x-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. The loading rates were found to have a direct effect on the microstructure and fatigue behavior of the alloy investigated. Adiabatic …
Effect Of Small Steps On The Receptivity And Transition In High Speed Boundary Layer, Sofia Yassir
Effect Of Small Steps On The Receptivity And Transition In High Speed Boundary Layer, Sofia Yassir
Theses and Dissertations
The research on transition in supersonic and hypersonic boundary layers has been reinvigorated in the last decades because of the increased interest in high-speed flight. The receptivity to environmental disturbances of high-speed boundary layers developing over flat plates or curved surfaces is a very important problem because the transition process is directly impacted by it. The main objective of the research is to determine the effect of small steps on laminar high-speed boundary-layers that are excited by freestream disturbances in the form of vorticity and acoustic waves. Both supesonic and hypersonic regimes are analyzed using a high-order compressible Navier-Stokes numerical …

An Investigation Of The Formability Of Zek100 Mg Alloy Using Pneumatic Bulge Formability Testing Methods, John Briou Bourgeois
Theses and Dissertations
The current study investigates the formability of ZEK100, a rare-earth containing magnesium alloy, using an in-house developed technique of pneumatic bulge forming. The thesis pursued innovation of sample preparation, testing, and experimental data analysis in order to create several forming limit diagrams (FLDs) of critical importance for determining a methodology for Mg formability. Samples were bulged through elliptical and circular dies at room temperature, 150 C, and 250 C, in two orientations, rolling direction (RD) and transverse direction (TD), in order to determine temperature dependence and orientation characteristics. The current research concluded ZEK100 is not a suitable alloy for room …
A Study Of Wheat Flour Tortillas, Combustion, Selected Gaseous And Nuclear Surrogate Samples Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs), Charles Tarshi Ghany
A Study Of Wheat Flour Tortillas, Combustion, Selected Gaseous And Nuclear Surrogate Samples Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs), Charles Tarshi Ghany
Theses and Dissertations
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an efficient tool for identification of elemental composition and characterization of materials. The concept of this technique is to focus a laser pulse of sufficiently high power on to a sample to create a plasma plume of atoms, ions, and molecules. The measurement of the resulting optical emission from these species provides the basis of the spectral analysis. Spectroscopic analysis of the plasma generated by Nd:YAG laser irradiation of wheat flour tortillas was carried out. A careful selection of spectral lines of Ca, Na and K which do not suffer from spectral interference was made. …
Environmental Management System Optimization Focusing On The Waste Environmental Media In The Chemical Industry, Mesha Jones
Environmental Management System Optimization Focusing On The Waste Environmental Media In The Chemical Industry, Mesha Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The first part of this project focused on evaluating aspects of the environmental management practices of Texas chemical industries, particularly waste generation and management of the data related to these processes. The waste generation data included Texas notifications required to track wastes. The next phase consisted of characterizing industrial waste disposal methods, waste container management, and transportation including an overview of required documentation for each activity. This led to identification of issues encountered from inefficient recordkeeping, ineffective internal communication, or inadequate environmental management systems. The result of an ineffective hazardous waste data management program can be fines, damage to the …
Evaluating Economic Impacts Of Different Silvicultural Approaches In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (Lmav), Sunil Nepal
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to model the growth and yield of bottomland hardwood forests of the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley and to explain the economic tradeoffs of even- and uneven-aged management. The US Forest Service (USFS) Forest Vegetation Simulator was used to model growth and yield for four different bottomland hardwood forest types using USFS inventory data. Even- and uneven-aged management scenarios were optimized for timber revenue maximization using the Land Expectation Value formula. Analyses suggested that growth and yield of even-aged and uneven-aged management approaches differ in terms of end products and harvesting time. The even-aged management …

A series of analyses which included single building structures inside of ERDC's Blast Load Simulator (BLS) with different obliquity orientations to the flow direction, two building structures inside the BLS with varying gap distances between the structures, and open air blast simulations with four structure scenarios at different building spacings and different blast orientations were performed. Unstructured and overset grid techniques were used during the modeling process and were compared for consistency with shock physics and computational performance. Results show Loci/BLAST's capability …
Examining Age Differences In Metamemory For Emotional Words, Samuel Ethan Flurry
Examining Age Differences In Metamemory For Emotional Words, Samuel Ethan Flurry
Theses and Dissertations
Metamemory is “knowing about knowing” (Flavell, 1971) and is theorized as a cognitive process that monitors and controls the memory system (Flavell & Wellman, 1975; Nelson & Narens, 1990). The predominate finding in the metamemory and aging literature is that metamemory is unimpaired by aging, even when memory is impaired by aging (Eakin & Hertzog, 2006; 2012; Connor, Hertzog, & Dunlosky, 1997; Hertzog, Sinclair, & Dunlosky, 2010; Eakin, Hertzog, & Harris, 2014, but see Souchay, Moulin, Clarys, Taconnat, & Isingrini, 2007). However, a study examining metamemory for emotional words suggests older adults may show metamemory impairment when predicting memory for …
Fall Migrant Waterbird Community Structure And Stable Isotope Ecology In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley And Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Use Of Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative Sites And Other Wetlands, Justyn Richard Foth
Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) was dominated by extensive lowland forests, but during the 20th century most of the MAV was converted to agricultural, aquaculture, and other human uses. These land-use changes created stopover migration and wintering habitats for waterfowl, shorebirds and other waterbird species. Before landscape modification of the MAV, shorebirds likely migrated past the MAV to wetlands along the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGoM). In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill impacted coastal marshes of the NGoM. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service implemented the Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative (MBHI) to provide waterbirds with wetlands inland of oil-impacted …
Fatigue Behavior And Modeling Of Polyether Ether Ketone (Peek) Under Constant And Variable Amplitude Loadings, Rakish Shrestha
Fatigue Behavior And Modeling Of Polyether Ether Ketone (Peek) Under Constant And Variable Amplitude Loadings, Rakish Shrestha
Theses and Dissertations
The fatigue behavior and cyclic deformation of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) subjected to various uniaxial cyclic loading conditions were experimentally investigated. These include constant amplitude and multi-block loading conditions at various frequencies with zero and non-zero mean strains. Under constant amplitude loading, increasing the test frequency generally resulted in longer fatigue lives for PEEK, while a minimal effect of tensile mean strain was observed. For all fatigue tests under fully- reversed multi-block loadings, pre-loading was found to have a significant beneficial effect on PEEK fatigue resistance irrespective to the load sequence. However, no obvious load history and sequence effect on …

Carbon Emissions Embodied In International Trade And Carbon Sequestration Of Harvested Wood Products, Prativa Shrestha
Carbon Emissions Embodied In International Trade And Carbon Sequestration Of Harvested Wood Products, Prativa Shrestha
Theses and Dissertations
After timber harvesting, carbon in wood is transferred to products pool and remains entrapped for a considerable time. It is necessary to estimate this carbon flux in the harvested wood products (HWP); otherwise, carbon emission estimates of a country will be overestimated at the time of harvest. Furthermore, carbon estimates of the HWP must be assessed for uncertainties which need to be reduced as far as possible. Environmental implications might be associated with the HWP traded in the national and international markets. In the current context, there is a lack of economic-environmental studies that relate to the trade of HWP. …
Characterization And Value-Added Utilization Of The Proteins Extracted From The By Products Of Catfish Fillet Processing Plant, Haoran Gao

Proteins in catfish by-products were extracted by two methods: Alkaline extraction (AE) and salt extraction (SE). Properties of the fish protein isolate (FPI) were measured by protein yield and content, moisture content, SDS-PAGE protein patterns, color and texture profile, and compared with commercial surimi products. Our results showed that catfish frame had higher protein yield and color similarity with commercial products than the head; AE-FPI had higher yield and gel strength than SE-FPI; SDS-PAGE protein patterns of FPI from catfish frame by SE method was comparable with commercial surimi products. Based on the results, further optimization of the recovery yield …
Holding Performance Measures Accountablefor Social Equity: A Polycentric Approach To Evaluating American Higher Education, Tracey L Norden Baham
Holding Performance Measures Accountablefor Social Equity: A Polycentric Approach To Evaluating American Higher Education, Tracey L Norden Baham
Theses and Dissertations
America’s founding fathers identified education as the key for sustaining democracy and economic growth. When determining how the new country would organize education, they decided not to centralize higher education institutions under a national university, thus creating a federalist system unique from the European model. This format allowed for diversity in educational missions, which many theorists suggest allows the country to serve its heterogeneous population. Many institutions that focus on social equity do not perform as high as institutions with selective admissions criteria. As governments begin enforcing accountability policies that encourage performance, institutions with social equity missions may be adversely …

Theses and Dissertations
Herbicide treatments were tested on mature stands of Miscanthus in 2013 and 2014 in Winston and Oktibbeha counties Mississippi. Twenty-one different herbicide treatments and two application timings, summer and fall, were evaluated. Glyphosate at 4,500 g ae ha-1 applied in the summer provided the best Miscanthus control at each location. Control with fall applications of glyphosate varied between locations. Two greenhouse studies were conducted in 2014 and 2015 at Mississippi State, MS to evaluate the effects of mowing on seedling Miscanthus, as well as the time period between seed germination and rhizome initiation. Rhizomes were visible on seedling plants 15 …
Gene Expression Profiling Of Wood Decay Fungus Fibroporia Radiculosa Grown On Different Organic And Copper Based Preservatives, Ayfer Akgul
Theses and Dissertations
Copper tolerant brown rot fungi are able to depolymerize the structure of wood treated with copper or organic wood preservatives. This research used quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) combined with RNA-seq to explore what genes of the brown-rot fungus, Fibroporia radiculosa, are expressed when the fungus is overcoming the wood preservatives and decaying the wood. The preliminary study of ACQ-treated wood indicated that the hydrogen peroxide needed for wood decay to proceed may come from AAOX (aryl alcohol oxidase), with oxalate regulation by ODC2 (oxalate decarboxylase), and copper regulation by COP (copper resistance P-type ATPase pump). The principal study measured …
Generating Predictive Inferences When Multiple Alternatives Are Available, Edward Andrew Cranford
Generating Predictive Inferences When Multiple Alternatives Are Available, Edward Andrew Cranford
Theses and Dissertations
The generation of predictive inferences may be difficult when a story leads to multiple possible consequences. Prior research has shown that readers only generate predictive inferences automatically, under normal reading conditions, when the story is based on familiar events for which the reader has readily available knowledge about what may happen next, there is enough constraining information in the text so that the inference is highly predictable, and there are few or no alternative inferences available (McKoon & Ratcliff, 1992). However, some evidence shows predictive inferences were generated when the likelihood of the targeted inference was reduced and the story …
Geotechnical Properties Of Very High Moisture Content Dredged Soil Lightly Cemented With Ordinary Or Portland-Limestone Cement, Mohammed Bazne
Geotechnical Properties Of Very High Moisture Content Dredged Soil Lightly Cemented With Ordinary Or Portland-Limestone Cement, Mohammed Bazne
Theses and Dissertations
Sustainable geotechnics warrants exploring beneficial reuse of the large volume of fine grained soils which are produced annually in various forms such as dredged soils and mine tailings. Often these soils are at very high moisture content, and are therefore referred to herein as VHMS for Very High Moisture Soils. These soils exhibit poor engineering properties such as low shear strength and high compressibility. This dissertation presents results from experiments conducted primarily to assess geotechnical properties over time of lightly cemented VHMS (referred to as LC-VHMS and defined as 5% or less cement by slurry mass). The main objectives of …
Governing The Rurals: Food Security And Governance In The 21st Century, Gina Paola Rico Mendez
Governing The Rurals: Food Security And Governance In The 21st Century, Gina Paola Rico Mendez
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops a theory about the consolidation of state legitimacy given transformations in food security. Food security has moved from a national food maximization effort to the provision of food to households and individuals, regardless of the production source. This definitional change was triggered by urbanization, industrialization of agriculture and liberalization of trade. These dynamics altered the formula for balance and control of a country’s territory; as agricultural output moved into a global context, urban centers became less reliant on its periphery for sustenance and thus governments have fewer incentives to provide governance of any quality to rural areas. …
Natural Population Dynamics Of Rock Iguanas In The Bahama Archipelago, Giuliano Colosimo
Natural Population Dynamics Of Rock Iguanas In The Bahama Archipelago, Giuliano Colosimo
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding whether groups of individuals represent a single panmictic gene pool, or multiple genetically structured populations across a species range should aid in predicting whether specific conservation strategies would be more or less effective for species preservation. Further, contrasting the population structures of multiple coexisting taxa could foster an even deeper understanding of evolutionary divergence among demes and potentially even suggest local adaptation in the form of tight coevolutionary relationships. Finally, the analysis of population dynamics within small and isolated populations could improve our understanding of the relative importance that different evolutionary mechanisms have in predicting population persistence in the …
Nitrogen And Potassium Management In Container Production Of Musa, Ensete, And Canna And Landscape Performance Of Musa, Ensete, And Musella, Maddox Martin Miller
Nitrogen And Potassium Management In Container Production Of Musa, Ensete, And Canna And Landscape Performance Of Musa, Ensete, And Musella, Maddox Martin Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Two container production studies (nursery area and greenhouse) and a landscape performance study to evaluate bananas and cannas were performed at R. R. Foil Plant Science Research Center on the campus of Mississippi State University. Previous reports determined that there is greater need of K2O fertilization in addition to N for tropical monocot nutrition. Contradictory to previous cultural recommendations for landscapes, it was determined that a N:K2O ratio is not significant for container production of Musa, Ensete, and Canna in pine bark substrate. Nitrogen rate was the most significant variable in the containerized production of Musa, Ensete, and Canna. The …
On Non-Parametric Confidence Intervals For Density And Hazard Rate Functions & Trends In Daily Snow Depths In The United States And Canada, Yang Xu
Theses and Dissertations
The nonparametric confidence interval for an unknown function is quite a useful tool in statistical inferential procedures; and thus, there exists a wide body of literature on the topic. The primary issues are the smoothing parameter selection using an appropriate criterion and then the coverage probability and length of the associated confidence interval. Here our focus is on the interval length in general and, in particular, on the variability in the lengths of nonparametric intervals for probability density and hazard rate functions. We start with the analysis of a nonparametric confidence interval for a probability density function noting that the …
Political Trust And Presidential Voting: A Changing Political Environment Inducing The End Of Traditional Politics In The United States, Brett Stephen Juraszek
Political Trust And Presidential Voting: A Changing Political Environment Inducing The End Of Traditional Politics In The United States, Brett Stephen Juraszek
Theses and Dissertations
Political climates are undoubtedly changing across the nation and creating volatile fluctuations of attitudes, beliefs, and behavior. In a more entertaining season of presidential primaries, both parties – Democratic and Republican – have nominees that will once again be scrutinized by many across the country. I argue the levels of scrutiny will more likely than not be enhanced to new proportions. Since a consistent reliance on media involvement and attack ads have grown immensely amongst presidential candidates, this will translate into a wider gap in party polarization and subsequently tie into the trust of American citizens. Previous scholars have shown …

Hurricane Isaac’s landfall on the coast of Louisiana spawned a hydrological research project between Mississippi State University (MSU), the Northern Gulf Institute (NGI), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Lower Pearl River Basin (LPRB). Unmanned aerial systems data collection missions were scheduled every two months in the LPRB. This research provides a comparison between Landsat-8 imagery and corresponding UAS imagery with regards to the four remote sensing resolutions: spatial, spectral, radiometric, and temporal. Near-infrared (NIR) imagery from each platform was compared by land-water masks and statistical comparisons. A classification method known as natural breaks with Jenks …
Stabilized Urea Fertilizer Effects On Corn Nitrogen Use Efficiency And Soil Nitrogen Transformations, Michael Paul Nattrass
Stabilized Urea Fertilizer Effects On Corn Nitrogen Use Efficiency And Soil Nitrogen Transformations, Michael Paul Nattrass
Theses and Dissertations
Urea based fertilizers are susceptible to N losses through volatilization, denitrification, and leaching. A field and incubation experiment were conducted at Mississippi State between 2013 and 2015 to evaluate the effect of fertilizer stabilizers on grain yield, N use, and N transformations in various soil textures. Stabilizers were applied to liquid urea-ammonium-nitrate (UAN) solution (32%) and granular urea (46-0-0) at labeled rates for 179 and 112 kg N ha-1 for the field and incubation experiments, respectively. Grain yield and N content at tasseling and physiological maturity were measured for the field experiment. Extracts from the incubation experiment were measured for …
