University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: White Papers
Libraries everywhere are undergoing tremendous transformation in staffing, services, and collections. Archives and special collections are growing in importance and are moving quickly from the perimeter to the center of library activities and services. The University of Nebraska Lincoln Libraries invited me to conduct and facilitate a 1.5 day workshop/retreat on trends and strategic goals/initiatives for archives and special collections including review of the current organizational structure, staffing and services. The workshop/retreat focused on the following goals:

"Diverse But Not Too Diverse": Social Identity, Oppression, And Resistance In Fan Culture, Julia Stern
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Through bringing together literature on social identity, community, and oppression, the current study examines the formation of social identity within fan culture through member’s struggles with the tension between resisting the oppression they face and the desire to belong. Fan culture communities, once associated with eccentric outcasts, have transitioned into mainstream popular culture. This transition is accompanied by a demographic shift within the community with increased participation of members of subordinate social groups (e.g., women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA community). The current research project draws on Social Identity Theory as well as Chavis and McMillan’s four …

Excerpt:
Maps provide a visual representation of the space that surrounds us, revealing how streets, towns, cities, states and countries developed physical boundaries. Plotting change over time through maps allows people to study and reflect on the environment leading to a better understanding of spatial reality. Just like any other primary source, maps are a creation of their social and cultural context conveying certain details while omitting others.

Gsbi Replication Toolkit: A Market Research Manual For Water Social Enterprises, Elia Kazemi, Aidan O’Neill, David Hong
Miller Center Fellowship
The authors of this report conducted a community needs assessment in several communities of northern Nicaragua in order to develop a business model for a potential water social enterprise in the area. The purpose of this report is to provide a toolkit to replicate this project in other areas with similar needs. It acts as a guide, laying out the necessary steps to gather, analyze, and use data in creating a viable social enterprise model. The report refers to our own project, “AguaNic: Proposal to ASDENIC for Launching a Drinking Water Social Enterprise,” with examples of the work we did …

Groundwater-Flow Model Of The Northern High Plains Aquifer In Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, And Wyoming, Steven M. Peterson, Amanda T. Flynn, Jonathan (Jp) Traylor
United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications
The High Plains aquifer is a nationally important water resource underlying about 175,000 square miles in parts of eight states: Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. Droughts across much of the Northern High Plains from 2001 to 2007 have combined with recent (2004) legislative mandates to elevate concerns regarding future availability of groundwater and the need for additional information to support science-based water-resource management. To address these needs, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) began the High Plains Groundwater Availability Study to provide a tool for water-resource managers and other stakeholders to assess the status …

Let’S Give Them Something To Talk About: Supporting Primary African American Students’ Language Through Dialogic Reading, Jessyca Denise Bryant
Let’S Give Them Something To Talk About: Supporting Primary African American Students’ Language Through Dialogic Reading, Jessyca Denise Bryant
Dissertations
Abstract Using an action research approach, the African American teacher–researcher investigated the appropriation and effectiveness of dialogic lessons and culturally relevant books to develop and improve primary-grade African American students’ language and literacy skills. Specifically, this study investigated whether changes in the kinds of questions posed during reading interactions resulted in extended thoughts, more complex sentence constructions, and the inclusion of new vocabulary words. Dialogic reading is an invaluable tool for teachers to utilize with students challenged with language differences upon entering school. Lessons were expressly designed to engage and scaffold students in their development of language and literacy skills. …

Gwu Psychology Professor Offers Information On Holiday Stress & Anxiety, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Getting stuck in traffic, helping little kids get ready for school, or managing family conflicts are daily tasks that can sometimes cause even the toughest of people to feel stressed out—particularly during the holiday season when demands on time or finances increase. Dr. Sharon Webb, assistant professor of psychology and counseling at Gardner-Webb University, says there are many psychological and physiological symptoms that people experience when they go through something they perceive as stressful. “Perception is probably the key word, because often stress is experienced through many different kinds of events we encounter,” Webb stated.

Drought Events And Their Effects On Vegetation Productivity In China, Li Zhang, Jingfeng Xiao, Yu Zhou, Yi Zheng, Jing Li, Han Xiao
Drought Events And Their Effects On Vegetation Productivity In China, Li Zhang, Jingfeng Xiao, Yu Zhou, Yi Zheng, Jing Li, Han Xiao
All Materials
Many parts of the world have experienced frequent and severe droughts during the last few decades. Most previous studies examined the effects of specific drought events on vegetation productivity. In this study, we characterized the drought events in China from 1982 to 2012 and assessed their effects on vegetation productivity inferred from satellite data. We first assessed the occurrence, spatial extent, frequency, and severity of drought using the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). We then examined the impacts of droughts on China's terrestrial ecosystems using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). During the period 1982–2012, China's land area (%) experiencing …

Supporting Students With Disabilities Entering The Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Field Disciplines, Karen Marie Dishauzi
Dissertations
Extensive research exists on female, African American, and Hispanic students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field disciplines. However, little research evaluates students with disabilities and career decision-making relating to STEM field disciplines. This study explored the career decision-making experiences and self-efficacy for students with disabilities. The purpose of this research study was to document experiences and perceptions of students with disabilities who pursue, and may consider pursuing, careers in the STEM field disciplines by exploring the career decision-making self-efficacy of students with disabilities. This study documented the level of influence that the students with disabilities had or may …
Perception Of Consultation Among Professional School Counselors, Teachers And Mental Health Professional Counselors, Brenda Lorraine Bryant
Perception Of Consultation Among Professional School Counselors, Teachers And Mental Health Professional Counselors, Brenda Lorraine Bryant
Dissertations
Abstract This is a study concerning the perception of consultation among school counselors, teachers, and mental health professional counselors (MHPCs) working collaboratively in the public school setting for the benefit of the academic and behavioral success of students. Although there are many consultation models and theoretical views (Brigman, Mullis, Webb, & White, 2005; Caplan, Caplan, & Erchul, 1995; Erchul & Conoley, 1991; Erford, 2011; Kampwirth, 2006), this study utilized the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) framework for consultation in schools. Although MHPCs are not considered school counselors by definition, and they are not compensated by school districts, they still serve …

Beyond A Meeting: A Case Study Examining The Impact Of Data-Focused Professional Learning Communities On Teacher Practice And Student Learning, Deena W. Townsend
Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations
The increased professional demands on educators without parallel increases in funding encourage schools to continually search for practical solutions to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to improve their instructional effectiveness. This qualitative research study explored this issue by examining how participation in a data-focused professional learning community (PLC) affected teacher practice and perceptions along with determining how data-focused PLCs contributed to student learning outcomes. The study participants were a team of mathematics teachers from a public middle school in the southeastern United States serving grades sixth through eighth. The findings from this study were summarized through three …
