Northwestern African Buthacus species are revised. Buthacus stockmanni sp. n. from Morocco and Western Sahara is described and fully complemented with color photos of live and preserved specimens, as well as their habitat. The hemispermatophore of B. stockmanni sp. n. is illustrated and described. In addition to morphology and hemi-spermatophores, we also describe the karyotypes of B. stockmanni sp. n. (2n=20). B. stockmanni sp. n. is compared with B. occidentalis Vachon, 1953 and B. ziegleri Lourenço, 2000. Both these species are differentiated from B. stockmanni sp. n. geographically and morphologically. The male of B. stockmanni sp. n. has fingers of …

We also report on the reproductive biology of this species based on captive breeding and rearing. and provide the first envenomation report for the species.

Synchronized Chat Notifications, Christopher Wren Dec 2016

Synchronized Chat Notifications, Christopher Wren

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure presents a system and a method to generate or control synchronized notifications in co-located devices. The method is implemented via suitable software such as an app. The method assumes that the devices have clocks that are synchronized (at least at a human-perceptual-scale), and are therefore likely on the same network. In this case, the server assigns a date certain to the notification data received and the app simply waits until that time to execute the notification. The method ensures that the notification sounds will all emit at very similar times. A device that experiences network delays would be …

Geo-Restricted In-Video Annotations, Justin Lewis, Joseph Cohen

Defensive Publications Series

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for video annotation that allow a content creator to specify whether a video annotation appears or changes based on the viewer’s geolocation to provide relevant content. The system uses four core components viz. video annotation editing tool, annotation storage mechanism, video metadata serving system and conversion mechanism. When a user clicks on media in a client application to view a video, the conversion mechanism converts the profile data of the user into geographic data using GPS or other methods. The metadata server then applies the geographic restrictions (step F) and shows the video with …

The Deportation Journeys Of The Holocaust, Connor Schonta Dec 2016

The Deportation Journeys Of The Holocaust, Connor Schonta

The Kabod

Roughly three million Jews were transported to extermination centers by train during the Holocaust.[1] Nearly all who boarded deportation trains were unaware of the fate that awaited them; and for most, fate meant death in a gas chamber.[2] Some, however, did survive. This paper is about that experience. It is a significant endeavor to study the accounts of Holocaust survivors, for through it, one is reminded of how much the victims endured, and that it truly happened—it happened to real individuals at a real time in history. And as they are remembered, may they be rightfully honored.

Eating Disorders: Anorexia And Bulimia As Developmental Crises, Ashley M. Barnett Dec 2016

Eating Disorders: Anorexia And Bulimia As Developmental Crises, Ashley M. Barnett

The Kabod

Eating disorders are classified as developmental crises and typically develop during the adolescent years when youths face the identity versus role confusion psychosocial stage of development. Individuals struggling with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa share characteristics similar to those found in a drug addiction. Social comparison theory may be used to explain the way individuals look to culture and media to examine whether their body images are acceptable. This body image comparison may result in an eating disorder, as can an environment where family dynamics are dysfunctional and therefore cannot cultivate healthy life stage development. Both anorexia nervosa and bulimia …

Mechanisms Of Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stem Cell Improvement Of Endothelial Function In Patients With Heart Failure And Frailty, Courtney Heather Premer Dec 2016

Mechanisms Of Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stem Cell Improvement Of Endothelial Function In Patients With Heart Failure And Frailty, Courtney Heather Premer

Open Access Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide. Furthermore, CVD is heavily linked to frailty, a comorbidity afflicting elderly patients. Endothelial dysfunction-characterized by diminished endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) function and flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD)-is central to the pathophysiology of heart failure (HF) and frailty. Current therapies are unable to reverse or stop the progression of these diseases, lending way to the emergence of regenerative medicine approaches and the use of stem cells, most notably mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs are pro-angiogeneic, immunomodulatory, antifibrotic, and also stimulate endogenous endothelial cell proliferation and function, …

Extemporaneous Embellishments In J.A. Benda's Keyboard Sonatinas, Based On A Survey Of Primary Sources By C.P.E. Bach And D.G. Türk, Maria Sumareva

Open Access Dissertations

Jiří Antonín Benda’s solo keyboard works, and his thirty-five keyboard sonatinas in particular, remain largely unexplored by modern scholars, pianists, and pedagogues. This essay aims to draw closer attention to these sonatinas, focusing on the applicability of two essential eighteenth-century performance practices—extemporaneous embellishment and variation of reprises—in these works. The first three chapters provide the historical background of Benda’s sonatinas, the purpose of the study, a biographical sketch of the composer, a review of the literature pertinent to Benda’s life and his keyboard works, as well as the structure and method of research employed in the subsequent chapters. A survey …

Advancing U.S. Seafood Production: Developing Hatchery Technology For Florida Stone Crab (Menippe Mercenaria), Craig W. Purcell

Open Access Theses

These experiments will be conducted in order to refine and implement reliable techniques for larval rearing of Florida stone crab (Menippe mercenaria). The aim is to secure the technology for production of large quantities of stone crab larvae for transfer to nursery growout environments to support domestic aquaculture production. Establishing a successful larval rearing protocol that maximizes total survivability and growth is essential for all aquacultures species. This experiment sought to define optimal larval rearing parameters from the first zoeal stage through the megalope stage (settlement). Four treatments, which included instar 1 Artemia (T1), decapsulated instar 1 Artemia (T2), enriched …

Understanding The Legalization Of Child Labor: A Case Study Of The Bolivian Child And Adolescent Code Reform, Jiaqi Yu Dec 2016

Understanding The Legalization Of Child Labor: A Case Study Of The Bolivian Child And Adolescent Code Reform, Jiaqi Yu

Open Access Theses

On August 4 2014, the Law N. 548 Boy, Girl and Adolescent Code (Ley No. 548 Código de Niña, Niño y Adolescente) went into force in the Plurinartional State of Bolivia (Liebel, 2014: 1). According to the legislative provisions, Bolivia officially legalizes the socioeconomic existence of child labor and reduces the minimum age of entry into labor market to 10 years old, rendering it the lowest in the entire globe (Greenwood, 2014). Bucking the interntional trend of restrictive child labor regulation, the law leaves the country at odds with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the United Nations (UN), who …

Understanding The Integration Of Foreign-Educated Cuban Physicians Into The U.S. Medical Field, Wendy Jordana Moore

Open Access Theses

In the U.S., immigrants and refugees are often unable to continue their profession after arrival. This paper describes a qualitative study of Cuban foreign-educated physicians (FEPs) who have attempted to integrate into the U.S. medical field. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Cuban FEPs who varied in age, gender, job, marital status, and amount of time in U.S. Participants were recruited via snowball sampling and thematic analysis was utilized to identify various pathways. Findings describe the importance of professional identity and how it influences participants’ transcultural process as well as their journey to find a “match” within the U.S. medical field. …

Identifying Suitable Habitat For Three Highly Migratory Sharks (Great Hammerhead, Tiger, And Bull) And Assessing Their Spatial Vulnerability To Commercial Longline Fishing In The Southwest Atlantic Ocean And Gulf Of Mexico, Hannah J. Calich Dec 2016

Calich

Open Access Theses

Aquatic highly migratory species (HMS) are economically and ecologically important, however, their highly migratory nature makes them difficult to study and thus there are knowledge gaps relating to their movement and habitat use patterns. Highly migratory sharks are likely to interact with commercial longline fishing gear and be caught as target or bycatch, which can threaten their populations. Understanding the environmental factors that influence and drive the movements of highly migratory sharks may help researchers better predict their presence and subsequently identify areas where they are vulnerability to fisheries. Here I evaluated the overlap between habitat suitability and gear restricted …

This newsletter was created by the Fall 2016 Honors English Class from Stephen F. Austin State University. Throughout the semester students were asked to define and interpret the terms "work" and "labor." Through our individual research on different aspects of work and labor, we hope to expand the general spectrum of what encompasses these topics. Works and labor are two important aspects of our culture. They are umbrella terms that encompass many occupational fields and serve as a uniting factor in modern-day society. Aspects of work and labor are observable in an assortment of environments, whether it be through schoolwork …

In-Class Versus At-Home Quizzes: Which Is Better? A Flipped Learning Study In A Two-Site Synchronously-Broadcast Organic Chemistry Course, Michael A. Christensen, Alyssia M. Lambert, Louis S. Nadelson, Kami M. Dupree, Trish A. Kingsford

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We recently shared our design of a two-semester flipped organic chemistry course, in which we gave students in-class quizzes to incentivize attendance and watching the lecture videos in advance. With a second iteration, we planned to make the video-watching experience more engaging. We accordingly hypothesized that if students completed short at-home quizzes while watching the videos, then attentiveness, engagement, and learning would increase. We tested this with a later section of the course, dividing the material into 13 units. For units 1-6, we gave in-class quizzes; for 7-13, quizzes were at home. Although units 1-6 and 7-13 covered different material, …
