Phased Helical Antenna Array For Cubesat Application, Kameron Lacalli Dec 2016

Phased Helical Antenna Array For Cubesat Application, Kameron Lacalli

Undergraduate Honors Theses

CubeSats communication links are typically slow due to their power and size restrictions. However, a low power, high speed down link connection can allow for greater data collection and relaying, pushing the capability of 1U CubeSats beyond what is traditionally thought possible. Investigated here is the feasibility of a 11 Mb/s down link connection on a 1U CubeSat, accomplished via 2x2 helical antenna phased array operating on the 802.11 standard. Using a phased array also allows for beam steering to secure connection with the ground station when the on board ADCS may not provide precise pointing capability of the CubeSat, …

Uncertainty Quantification (Uq) For Wall Modeled Large Eddy Simulation (Wmles) Model, Zuoxian Hou, Ramesh K. Agarwal Dec 2016

Uncertainty Quantification (Uq) For Wall Modeled Large Eddy Simulation (Wmles) Model, Zuoxian Hou, Ramesh K. Agarwal

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

In this paper non-intrusive uncertainty quantification (UQ) method is used to improve the accuracy of Smagorinsky Large eddy simulation (LES) model and a wall-modeled large eddy simulation (WMLES) model. Detailed UQ studies focusing on the closure coefficients of these two models are performed. A Polynomial Chaos (PC) surrogate model is used to evaluate the output sensitivities and uncertainties in the entire flow domain. The proposed UQ method allows for the investigation of specific flow features and phenomena within the domain. The results of the UQ analyses are then used to identify which closure coefficients in the models most influence the …

Rat Elbow Project, Wilson Roen, Spencer Lake Dec 2016

Rat Elbow Project, Wilson Roen, Spencer Lake

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Current methods for treating post-traumatic joint stiffness (PTJS), a common clinical problem following elbow surgeries which causes functional impairment of the limb, have proven insufficient.1 The main factors that expose the elbow joint to this complication are a high degree of congruence, the complexity of the joint surfaces and the high tissue sensitivity to trauma, especially the joint capsule.1 As a result, the Lake laboratory is working with elbow tissue to determine how the injury presents itself. With a deeper understanding of the injury, the lab hopes to develop more effective prevention and treatment methods for PTJS. Before the fall …

Skull Shape Affects Susceptibility To Traumatic Brain Injury, Kashyap Arcot, Guy M. Genin Dec 2016

Skull Shape Affects Susceptibility To Traumatic Brain Injury, Kashyap Arcot, Guy M. Genin

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Rapid deformation of brain matter caused by skull acceleration is one of the most significant causes of concussion and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite substantial research being conducted in this area of study, very little is understood regarding the mechanics of the brain when exposed to rapid acceleration. As a result, the biomechanics of TBI remain ambiguous. In the present study, we apply a new strain estimation algorithm that enables the tracking of strains on the periphery of an image onto data obtained from tagged gel phantom and human MR-images. We use this new method to quantify strain concentrations …

The Hif/Phf8/Ar Axis Promotes Prostate Cancer Progression., D Tong, Q Liu, G Liu, W Yuan, L Wang, Y Guo, W Lan, Dianzheng Zhang, S Dong, Y Wang, H Xiao, J Mu, C Mao, J Wong, J Jiang

PCOM Scholarly Works

Recent studies provide strong evidence that the androgen receptor (AR) signaling pathway remains active in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). However, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, we demonstrate that plant homeo domain finger protein 8 (PHF8 )interacts with and functions as an essential histone demethylase activity-dependent AR coactivator. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the expression of PHF8 is induced by hypoxia in various prostate cancer cell lines. Knockdown of either hypoxia-inducible factor HIF2α or HIF1α almost completely abolished hypoxia-induced PHF8 expression. Importantly, we observed that PHF8 is highly expressed in clinical androgen deprived prostate cancer samples and …

This is the 100th column of this series. During

the two years during which this column has been

published uninterruptedly on a weekly basis, a

common question I received is why do I defend

higher education?

I remember when I decided to become a scientist.

The day was October 5, 1957. I was a 6-year-old kid

living in Venezuela. The big headline in the newspaper

that day was that the Soviets had launched

an artificial satellite named Sputnik. I was amazed.

I asked my father all kinds of questions about it,

but he could not tell me much more than …

The Vibrio Cholerae Minor Pilin Tcpb Initiates Assembly And Retraction Of The Toxin-Coregulated Pilus, Dixon Ng, Tony Harn, Tuba Altindal, Subramania Kolappan, Jarrad Marles, Rajan Lala, Ingrid Spielman, Yang Gao, Caitlyn Hauke, Gabriela Kovacikova Dec 2016

The Vibrio Cholerae Minor Pilin Tcpb Initiates Assembly And Retraction Of The Toxin-Coregulated Pilus, Dixon Ng, Tony Harn, Tuba Altindal, Subramania Kolappan, Jarrad Marles, Rajan Lala, Ingrid Spielman, Yang Gao, Caitlyn Hauke, Gabriela Kovacikova

Dartmouth Scholarship

Type IV pilus (T4P) systems are complex molecular machines that polymerize major pilin proteins into thin filaments displayed on bacterial surfaces. Pilus functions require rapid extension and depolymerization of the pilus, powered by the assembly and retraction ATPases, respectively. A set of low abundance minor pilins influences pilus dynamics by unknown mechanisms. The Vibrio cholerae toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) is among the simplest of the T4P systems, having a single minor pilin TcpB and lacking a retraction ATPase. Here we show that TcpB, like its homolog CofB, initiates pilus assembly. TcpB co-localizes with the pili but at extremely low levels, equivalent …

Greenland Subglacial Drainage Evolution Regulated By Weakly Connected Regions Of The Bed, Matthew J. Hoffman, Lauren C. Andrews, Stephen A. Price, Ginny A. Catania, Thomas A. Neumann, Martin P. Luthi, Jason Gulley, Claudia Ryser, Robert L. Hawley, Blaine Morris Dec 2016

Greenland Subglacial Drainage Evolution Regulated By Weakly Connected Regions Of The Bed, Matthew J. Hoffman, Lauren C. Andrews, Stephen A. Price, Ginny A. Catania, Thomas A. Neumann, Martin P. Luthi, Jason Gulley, Claudia Ryser, Robert L. Hawley, Blaine Morris

Dartmouth Scholarship

Penetration of surface meltwater to the bed of the Greenland Ice Sheet each summer causes an initial increase in ice speed due to elevated basal water pressure, followed by slowdown in late summer that continues into fall and winter. While this seasonal pattern is commonly explained by an evolution of the subglacial drainage system from an inefficient distributed to efficient channelized configuration, mounting evidence indicates that subglacial channels are unable to explain important aspects of hydrodynamic coupling in late summer and fall. Here we use numerical models of subglacial drainage and ice flow to show that limited, gradual leakage of …

Handling Relationships In A Wiki System, Yashi Kamboj Dec 2016

Handling Relationships In A Wiki System, Yashi Kamboj

Master's Projects

Wiki software enables users to manage content on the web, and create or edit web pages freely. Most wiki systems support the creation of hyperlinks on pages and have a simple text syntax for page formatting. A common, more advanced feature is to allow pages to be grouped together as categories. Currently, wiki systems support categorization of pages in a very traditional way by specifying whether a wiki page belongs to a category or not. Categorization represents unary relationship and is not sufficient to represent n-ary relationships, those involving links between multiple wiki pages.

In this project, we extend Yioop, …

Predicting User's Future Requests Using Frequent Patterns, Marc Nipuna Dominic Savio

Master's Projects

In this research, we predict User's Future Request using Data Mining Algorithm. Usage of the World Wide Web has resulted in a huge amount of data and handling of this data is getting hard day by day. All this data is stored as Web Logs and each web log is stored in a different format with different Field names like search string, URL with its corresponding timestamp, User ID’s that helps for session identification, Status code, etc. Whenever a user requests for a URL there is a delay in getting the page requested and sometimes the request is denied. Our …

Deep Data Analysis On The Web, Xuanyu Liu Dec 2016

Deep Data Analysis On The Web, Xuanyu Liu

Master's Projects

Search engines are well known to people all over the world. People prefer to use keywords searching to open websites or retrieve information rather than type typical URLs. Therefore, collecting finite sequences of keywords that represent important concepts within a set of authors is important, in other words, we need knowledge mining. We use a simplicial concept method to speed up concept mining. Previous CS 298 project has studied this approach under Dr. Lin. This method is very fast, for example, to mine the concept, FP-growth takes 876 seconds from a database with 1257 columns 65k rows, simplicial complex only …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation And Optimization Of 69-Degree-Delta Wing Model In Supersonic Flow, James Mitchell, Ramesh K. Agarwal Dec 2016

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation And Optimization Of 69-Degree-Delta Wing Model In Supersonic Flow, James Mitchell, Ramesh K. Agarwal

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

The Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation and optimization of a 69-degree-deltawing model in a supersonic flow condition. The steady compressible Reynolds Averaged NavierStokes (RANS) equation using the inviscid Euler equations will be solved using the flow solver ANSYS Fluent. The CFD simulations will be compared to experimental and prior results before optimization begins. After simulation results compare well with AIAA sonic boom workshops provided data, a genetic algorithm will be created to optimize the deltawing to minimize the pressure disturbance [1]. The study of temperature effects on the pressure disturbance will also be considered using the sBOOM code provided by NASA …

The Effects Of Rarefaction And Thermal Non-Equilibrium On A Blunt Body And A Bicone In Hypersonic Flow And Their Shape Optimization For Reducing Both Drag And Heat Transfer, Samuel Gardner, Ramesh K. Agarwal Dec 2016

The Effects Of Rarefaction And Thermal Non-Equilibrium On A Blunt Body And A Bicone In Hypersonic Flow And Their Shape Optimization For Reducing Both Drag And Heat Transfer, Samuel Gardner, Ramesh K. Agarwal

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Design of space vehicles pose many challenging problems due to their hypersonic speeds as they need to travel through different flow regimes due to changes in the density of the atmosphere with altitude. Some of the key characteristics associated with hypersonic flow are extremely high temperatures and heat transfer to the wall of the spacecraft. At these temperatures, the assumption of thermal equilibrium is no longer valid and the effect of rotational non-equilibrium must be included in the modeling of diatomic gas flow. This thesis employs the Navier-Stokes equations, which are modified to include a rotational non-equilibrium relaxation model to …
