Members of the genus Rubus L., including the Brambles and Raspberries, are known as aggressive weeds and also as plants with beneficial traits. Several wild Bramble species have been improved or crossed to produce marketable varieties and some species are considered to be particularly valuable for their nutritional and medicinal properties. However, for the great majority of botanists they remain a taxonomic enigma. Traditionally batologists (Bramble specialists) have separated taxa mainly by morphological descriptions. Breeders and growers of economically important Rubus species use traditional written descriptions including biometric data, to supplement DNA analysis, drawings and photographs. The páramo grasslands of the Northern Andes are highly biodiverse ecosystems that provide ecosystem services for the millions of people that live in the region (Buytaert et al., 2011; Ramsay, 2014). AbstractBackgroundResearch investigating the association of infant dietary factors with later health outcomes often relies on maternal recall. It is unclear what the effect of recall bias is on the accuracy of the information obtained. The present study aimed to determine the extent of recall bias on the accuracy of infant feeding and food allergen data collected 10 years later.MethodsMothers were recruited from a prospective birth cohort from the Isle of Wight. Background

Excessive sun exposure and sunburn increase individuals’ risk of skin cancer. It is especially important to prevent sunburn in childhood due to the higher relative risk of skin cancer across the life span compared to risk associated with sunburn episodes experienced later in life. This study examined demographic and attitudinal factors associated with engagement in a range of sun protection behaviours (wearing a hat, wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade, and staying indoors during the middle of the day) and the frequency of sunburn among Western Australian adolescents to provide insights of relevance for future sun protection campaigns. …

This paper extends recent work of Garcia et al. on event-triggered communication to reach consensus in multi-agent systems. It proposes an improved agent state estimator as well as an estimator of the state estimation uncertainty to trigger communications. Convergence to consensus is studied. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed estimators in presence of state perturbations.

Meningiomas are known to be more common in females than males. They are also known in rare cases to grow in size during pregnancy, which can complicate its management. We describe a 31-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with blurring of her vision and diplopia during the third trimester of her pregnancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a small left cavernous sinus meningioma. The patient was treated conservatively until her uncomplicated delivery. A postpartum MRI scan showed complete regression of the suspected meningioma. Currently the patient is contemplating a further pregnancy.

In this paper we show how to compute algorithmically the full set of algebraically independent constraints for singular mechanical and field-theoretical models with polynomial Lagrangians. If a model under consideration is not singular as a whole but has domains of dynamical (field) variables where its Lagrangian becomes singular, then our approach allows to detect such domains and compute the relevant constraints. In doing so, we assume that the Lagrangian of a model is a differential polynomial and apply the differential Thomas decomposition algorithm to the Euler-Lagrange equations.

He is under the care of an occupational therapist and tries to work around his inability to draw letters in a consistent manner. Vincent is six and struggles at school with his poor handwriting and even poorer self-confidence. Whereas Thomas is lively and always quick at shifting his attention from one activity to another, Vincent is shy and poised. The streams of funds and, consequently, availability of effective interventions for the disease have resulted in considerable reduction in its burden, globally. On average, more than 1,000 individuals will acquire a mosquito-borne disease in Western Australia (WA) each year. Knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in relation to mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease have not yet been investigated within Australia. A randomized telephone survey of 2,500 households across 12 regions in WA was undertaken between February and May 2014. The aim of the survey was to obtain baseline KAP data surrounding mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases in different regions of WA, across a range of age groups and between males and females. A potential environmental impact associated with horizontal directional drilling is the inadvertent return of bentonite-based drilling fluid to the surface via naturally occurring fractures or fissures. This study investigated a range of flocculants consisting of water-soluble linear polyacrylamides (PAMs) differing in charge (anionic, neutral, and cationic), biopolymer (chitosan) and gypsum for treating the bentonite suspension that might release with runoff or into stream water. Laboratory jar test were conducted with a 0.4 % (w/v) bentonite suspension having an average initial turbidity of 1,217 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). This body of research explores the dietary application of a bioactive, solid-state fermentation (SSF) product in contemporary and lupin-containing diets of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niltoticus) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Consequently, the work provides holistic assessment of the influences of SSF products on animal health and performance; depending upon rearing temperature, nutritional physiologies, feed formulations and extrusion conditions; alongside information on the performance of lupins in aquafeeds. The SSF product (at 0.1 % inclusion) improved growth performance of Nile tilapia fed diets containing lupins. Phosphorous retention appeared higher when the SSF product was included in a yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus) …
