Optimal Dg Placement: A Multimethod Analysis, Saiful A. Ratul
Optimal Dg Placement: A Multimethod Analysis, Saiful A. Ratul
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
With Power System being restructured in the vision of Smart Grid, it is important now more than ever to find suitable locations to place Distributed Generators (DG). Distributed generators, which may be renewable, are not limited to specific locations as in the case of conventional generators. Several papers have been published that make suggestions on where the optimal location of DG should be in a system. Objectives ranging from loss minimization to total cost minimization have been the factor for such studies. In this study, a new method is introduced that hopes to improve a current system in three ways …
Spatial Data Mining Analytical Environment For Large Scale Geospatial Data, Zhao Yang
Spatial Data Mining Analytical Environment For Large Scale Geospatial Data, Zhao Yang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Nowadays, many applications are continuously generating large-scale geospatial data. Vehicle GPS tracking data, aerial surveillance drones, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), world-wide spatial networks, and high resolution optical or Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery data all generate a huge amount of geospatial data. However, as data collection increases our ability to process this large-scale geospatial data in a flexible fashion is still limited. We propose a framework for processing and analyzing large-scale geospatial and environmental data using a “Big Data” infrastructure. Existing Big Data solutions do not include a specific mechanism to analyze large-scale geospatial data. In this work, we extend …
Factors Affecting Algal Biomass Growth And Cell Wall Destruction, Alicia E. Simosa
Factors Affecting Algal Biomass Growth And Cell Wall Destruction, Alicia E. Simosa
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Research using microalgae Chlorella vulgaris was conducted in order to determine the maximum CO2 concentration under which algae can grow, within the emission range from oil and natural gas burning plants (0-20%).
After choosing the optimal CO2 percentage, pH and alkalinity were determined; and finally, an electrochemical (EC) batch reactor connected to DC current was applied to achieve algae cell annihilation, and therefore, facilitate anaerobic digestion, methane production and energy recovery.
It was determined that algae can grow under 20% CO2, being 15% CO2 the most effective (pH of 6.64 and alkalinity of 617.5 mg/L CaCO …
If Only They Tried; The Complicated Crusade For Salvation In The Post-Katrina Education Reform Movement, Brooke Wanamaker
If Only They Tried; The Complicated Crusade For Salvation In The Post-Katrina Education Reform Movement, Brooke Wanamaker
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Education reform is shifting the landscape of New Orleans public schools, where alternative certification programs are thriving and changing the demographics of core teachers. This study follows a Teach for America (TFA) Corps Member from 2007 (just after the historic flooding from Hurricane Katrina) who brought a promise of innovation through idealism and green wisdom. The teacher’s preparation and motivations are shown to be problematic. Examining the assumptions and privileges that underlie the import of inexperienced talent to urban education systems, this study considers the ways that community voices have been lost or undervalued in New Orleans schools. The thesis …

Plastic Oceans: A New Way In Solving Our Plastic Pollution, Dakota S. Floyd
Plastic Oceans: A New Way In Solving Our Plastic Pollution, Dakota S. Floyd
Master's Theses
By 2050, the world’s oceans will have more plastic than fish with potentially catastrophic consequences on sea life and the health of the ocean. Economically, countries with coastal boundaries will be heavily impacted as plastic pollution has already generated a 13 billion dollars in monetary losses. Considering that this is an extreme problem that we are currently facing the current solution is not enough in curbing our plastic pollution. While, recycling programs have been beneficial in reclaiming some plastic our mass consumption of plastic has outpaced the capabilities of recycling efforts. If we are to find a solution in our …

Black Minds Matter: The Academic Identity Of First Year African American Stem Students, Christa Dawn Platt
Theses and Dissertations
A national push exists to increase the number of African American students who pursue STEM majors (Baber, 2014). While African American students have high aspirations to pursue STEM disciplines, an incongruence remains between their aspirations and their attainment of STEM degrees (Archer, Dewitt, Osbourne, 2015). This work seeks to critically underscore the structural issues that impede African American students in their journey as STEM majors. These impediments have been explored as factors that influence the identity of African American students. In the spirit of Critical Race Theory, the goal of this study is to give voice to first year African …

A Cloud-Based Workflow To Quantify Transcript-Expression Levels In Public Cancer Compendia, P J. Tatlow, Stephen R. Piccolo
Faculty Publications
Public compendia of sequencing data are now measured in petabytes. Accordingly, it is infeasible for researchers to transfer these data to local computers. Recently, the National Cancer Institute began exploring opportunities to work with molecular data in cloud-computing environments. With this approach, it becomes possible for scientists to take their tools to the data and thereby avoid large data transfers. It also becomes feasible to scale computing resources to the needs of a given analysis. We quantified transcript-expression levels for 12,307 RNA-Sequencing samples from the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia and The Cancer Genome Atlas. We used two cloud-based configurations and …

Establishment Of The Nigerian Railway Corporation, Tokunbo A. Ayoola
Journal of Retracing Africa
Making use of previously unused Colonial Office records at the National Archives in Kew, including newspaper reports, interviews with staff of the Nigerian Railway, and debates in the Federal House of Representatives, this study examines the forces that dictated the establishment of the Nigerian Railway Corporation. It argues that the primary reason why the British colonial government established the corporation was to assist foreign interests in Nigeria by distancing itself from the direct management of labor relations between the Nigerian colonial state and the militant trade unions in the Nigerian Railway and other commercially oriented government departments. By placing the …
“God Was With Us:” Child Labor In Colonial Kenya, 1922 - 1950s, Samson K. Ndanyi
“God Was With Us:” Child Labor In Colonial Kenya, 1922 - 1950s, Samson K. Ndanyi
Journal of Retracing Africa
Contentious debates about the allowable minimum age of child laborers informed the discourse of child labor in colonial Kenya between 1922 and the 1950s. Beginning with the Harry Thuku Uprising of 1922 that instigated the discussion over labor policy concerning juvenile wage laborers and heightened the tension between the British colonial administration and African adult workers, the British government in Kenya struggled to forge coherent labor policies concerning the ages of African child workers. Frequent changes in labor laws made it easier for labor recruiters and employers to manipulate the system by recruiting younger children for work thus drawing them …

Inline Voice Commands In Word Processor, Georges Rotival, Victoria Fritz, Kelly Moran, Shawn Lauriat, Kirti Agarwal
Defensive Publications Series
Invoking a command in a word processor typically involves a break in the flow of writing. For example, if a user wants to insert a table into a document that she is editing, she has to execute an operation such as pressing a key combination, performing a mouse movement, or a gesture to invoke a command. Such breaks in flow causes a loss of productivity. Further, performing such movements may be difficult for users with motor disabilities. This disclosure describes techniques that enable a user to issue voice commands without a break in the flow of writing.

This study presents various fuzzy type controllers for a solar sail. First, a Twin Parallel Distributed Compensator (TPDC) is built for a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model of the solarsail. The T-S fuzzy model is constructed by linearizing the existing nonlinear equations fo motion of the solar sail. The T-S fuzzy model is used to solve a set of linear matrix inequalities to derive state feedback controller gains. The TPDC controls the solar sail using a combination of reaction wheels and roll stabilizer bars for attitude control and trim masses for disturbance rejection. The TPDC tracks and stabilizes the solar sail to …
Warlord: The Political And Military Ambitions Of Nazi Germany, William R. Underhill
Warlord: The Political And Military Ambitions Of Nazi Germany, William R. Underhill
Senior Theses
There are so many important stories to consider when thinking about World War II. It is easy to think about the popular aspects of the war: the causes, the major figures, the battles, and, of course, the lasting consequences. Yet there are other, lesser known storylines to consider, ones that have taken a backseat to the more popular narratives of the time. It is commonly understood that Nazi Germany was evil and that they had nothing but ill intentions for the rest of Europe and the world. However, it is vital to understand that Germany’s pre-war intentions are notably different …
Instantaneous Shoreline Mapping From Worldview-2 Satellite Images By Using Shadow Analysis And Spectrum Matching Techniques, I-Chieh Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Shoreline mapping and monitoring are crucial in heavily eroding coastal areas. Frequently monitoring shoreline changes in eroding areas can help government agencies to understand the causes and formulate plans to protect the shoreline; however, the cost of data sources and human labor involved can be prohibitive. To address this problem, this research proposes a cost-effective and semiautomatic shoreline delineation procedure that uses WorldView-2 satellite images as the data source. The advantages of the proposed procedure are the use of shadow and spectrum information, as well as the application of objectoriented classification. The classification process incorporates new bands from WorldView-2 to …
