Oceanic-Atmospheric Influences On Streamflow Extremes & Characteristics In Southeastern United States, Andrea Carpenter
Oceanic-Atmospheric Influences On Streamflow Extremes & Characteristics In Southeastern United States, Andrea Carpenter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Comprehensive evaluation of changes in streamflow extremes and characteristics due to climate change and variability is the main focus of this study. Available streamflow data at several gaging stations in least anthropologically affected watersheds of the Southeastern Gulf-Atlantic Region, were used for this analysis. To evaluate influences due to climate change, nonparametric trend tests were applied to annual and monthly extremes, while considering seasonality, along with changes in streamflow characteristics. To understand climate variability influences, streamflow data is partitioned in to cool and warm phases of four oceanic and atmospheric oscillations known to have an effect on hydroloclimatology of the …

Osteological Analysis Of The Human Remains At Markham Park I And Ii: Social Standing And Age Questions, Ruben Verdes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis attempts to analyze the osteological material of Markham Parks I and II, two sites from Broward County, Florida from a bioarchaeological perspective in order to understand the possible presence of social stratification that existed between both populations at Markham Park and in line with other Florida populations. The analysis includes a look at the average stature of both populations through the use of estimation formulas, as well as taking note of any features on long bones that could denote the possible presence of injury or nutritional maladies which could be indications of social hardships. It also includes a …
Performance Analysis Of Spectrum Sensing Schemes Based On Fractional Lower Order Moments For Cognitive Radios In Alpha- Stable Noise Environments, A-Bon Elfick Ackie
Performance Analysis Of Spectrum Sensing Schemes Based On Fractional Lower Order Moments For Cognitive Radios In Alpha- Stable Noise Environments, A-Bon Elfick Ackie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Natural and manmade noise signals tend to exhibit impulsive behaviors. Therefore modeling those signals as α-stable processes is better suited towards the development of a practical spectrum sensing scheme. However, the performances of detectors operating in an α-stable noise environment are difficult to evaluate. This is because an α-stable random variable can usually only be modeled by the characteristic function since closed-form expressions are usually not available except for the special values of the characteristic exponent that correspond to the Cauchy and Gaussian noise distributions. In this thesis, we derive a general closed-form expression for the probability density function (PDF) …
On Development Of Arterial Fundamental Diagrams Based On Surrogate Density Measures From Adaptive Traffic Control Systems Utilizing Stop Line Detection, Igor Dakic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Macroscopic fundamental diagram is the concept of the highest importance in traffic flow theory used for development of network-wide control strategies. Previous studies showed that so called Arterial Fundamental Diagrams (AFDs) properly depict relationships between major macroscopic traffic variables on urban arterials. Most of these studies used detector’s occupancy as a surrogate measure to represent traffic density. Nevertheless, detector’s occupancy is not very often present in the field data. More frequently, field data from arterial streets provide performance metrics measured at the stop lines of traffic signals, which represent a hybrid of flow and occupancy. When such performance measures are …
Physical Layer Security Of Wireless Transmissions Over Fading Channels, Sadrac Blanc
Physical Layer Security Of Wireless Transmissions Over Fading Channels, Sadrac Blanc
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The open nature of the wireless medium makes the wireless communication susceptible to eavesdropping attacks. In addition, fading and shadowing significantly degrade the performance of the communication system in the wireless networks. A versatile approach to circumvent the issues of eavesdropping attacks while exploiting the physical properties of the wireless channel is the so-called physical layer-security. In this work, we consider a model in which two legitimate users communicate in the presence of an eavesdropper. We investigate the performance of the wireless network at the physical layer that is subject to a variety of fading environments that may be modeled …

Social Sustainability In The Supply Chain: Construct Development And Measurement Validation, V Mani, R Agarwal, A Gunasekaran, T Papadopoulos, R Dubey, Sj Childe
Plymouth Business School
Research on social sustainability in developing countries has recently gained importance for both academics and practitioners. Studies in the supply chain management field take either a supplier or a manufacturer perspective that address predominantly corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues referring to the internal stakeholders. Our research integrates the literature on supplier, manufacturer, and customer responsibility and proposes the concept of supply chain social sustainability (SCSS) that refers to addressing social issues within the overall (upstream and downstream) supply chain. Furthermore, we develop and empirically validate scales for measuring SCSS using in-depth interviews and a survey in the Indian manufacturing industry. …

Shakespeare And The Cultural Olympiad: Contesting Gender And The British Nation In The Bbc’S Hollow Crown, L Monique Pittman
Shakespeare And The Cultural Olympiad: Contesting Gender And The British Nation In The Bbc’S Hollow Crown, L Monique Pittman
Faculty Publications
As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad celebrating both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, the BBC launched a season of programs, entitled Shakespeare Unlocked, most notably presenting the plays of the second tetralogy in four feature-length adaptations released under the unifying title The Hollow Crown. These plays so obviously engaged with the question of English nationalism suited a year in which the United Kingdom wrestled with British identity in a post-colonial and post-Great Recession world. Through its adaptative and filmic vocabularies, however, The Hollow Crown advances a British nationalism unresponsive to the casualties — often women and …

A course design question for self-paced courses includes whether or not technological measures should be used in course design to force students to follow the sequence intended by the course author. This study examined learner behavior to understand whether the sequence of student assignment submissions in a self-paced distance course is related to successful completion of the course. The study included 543 students in 89 different general education courses at a private university in the United States during a two year period. Results indicate that students who completed at least one assignment or exam out of the intended sequence of …
Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani
Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This chapter traces some of the reasons for lack of equal gender progression. It does so through analysis of the relationship between gender and architectural education, from entry to graduation, in order to reveal how the performativity of gender at university influences an individual's prospects to acquire optimal social, cultural, and economic capital in their post-university working life. In the United Kingdom and United States women are now undertaking a vocational architectural education at university at a rate mostly equal to or greater than men. While architecture schools undertake their own internal assessments on gender split and recruitment, there has …

Measuring Environmental Sustainability In Agriculture: A Composite Environmental Impact Index Approach, Ne Sabiha, R Salim, S Rahman, Mf Rola-Rubzen
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The present study develops a composite environmental impact index (CEII) to evaluate the extent of environmental degradation in agriculture after successfully validating its flexibility, applicability and relevance as a tool. The CEII tool is then applied to empirically measure the extent of environmental impacts of High Yield Variety (HYV) rice cultivation in three districts of north-western Bangladesh for a single crop year (October, 2012-September, 2013). Results reveal that 27 to 69 per cent of the theoretical maximum level of environmental damage is created due to HYV rice cultivation with significant regional variations in the CEII scores, implying that policy interventions …

A "Mental Models" Approach To The Communication Of Subsurface Hydrology And Hazards, H Gibson, I Stewart, S Pahl, A Stokes
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Communicating information about geological and hydrological hazards relies on appropriately worded communications targeted at the needs of the audience. But what are these needs and how does the geoscientist discern them? This paper adopts a psychological "mental models" approach to assess the public perception of the geological subsurface and surveys three communities in the south-west of England about their attitudes and representations of the geological subsurface. The findings reveal important preconceptions and misconceptions regarding the impact of hydrological systems and hazards on the geological subsurface, notably in terms of the persistent conceptualisation of underground rivers and the inferred relations between …

Identification Of Blood Biomarkers For Use In Point Of Care Diagnosis Tool For Alzheimer's Disease, E. Jammeh, P. Zhao, C. Carroll, S. Pearson, E. Ifeachor
Peninsula Medical School
Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is widely regarded as necessary to allow treatment to be started before irreversible damage to the brain occur and for patients to benefit from new therapies as they become available. Low-cost point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic tools that can be used to routinely diagnose AD in its early stage would facilitate this, but such tools require reliable and accurate biomarkers. However, traditional biomarkers for AD use invasive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and/or expensive neuroimaging techniques together with neuropsychological assessments. Blood-based PoC diagnostics tools may provide a more cost and time efficient way to assess AD to …

An Evaluation Of The Toxicity And Bioaccumulation Of Bismuth In The Coastal Environment Using Three Species Of Macroalga, James Kearns, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Bismuth is a heavy metal whose biogeochemical behaviour in the marine environment is poorly defined. In this study, we exposed three different species of macroalgae (the chlorophyte, Ulva lactuca, the phaeophyte, Fucus vesiculosus, and the rhodophyte, Chondrus crispus) to different concentrations of Bi (up to 50 g L-1) under controlled, laboratory conditions. After a period of 48-h, the phytotoxicity of Bi was measured in terms of chlorophyll fluorescence quenching, and extracellular and intracellular accumulation of Bi determined after EDTA extraction and acid digestion, respectively. For all algae, both the internalisation and total accumulation of Bi were proportional to the concentration …

Using Concatenation Cost For Unit Selection Of Homosonic Segments In Concatenative Sound Synthesis, Noris Mohd Norowi, Mas Rina Mustaffa, Eduardo Reck Miranda
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This paper studies the issues surrounding the search and selection process in a general CSS system which may affect the synthesis result, namely the homosonic segments. Homosonic segments are first termed in this study, where it refers to audio files which have one or more of the same sonic properties with each other, but do not sound the same acoustically when played due to the limited audio features extracted during the analysis process. These homosonic segments create confusions within the CSS selection engine. This study proposes a robust solution to overcome this issue by introducing the concatenation cost in addition …

Diffusion Challenges For Innovation In Technology-Intensive Industries, Juergen Steinheber
Diffusion Challenges For Innovation In Technology-Intensive Industries, Juergen Steinheber
Plymouth Business School Theses
Many innovations fail on the market. Non-adoption and slow diffusion represent a high risk for companies in technology-intensive industries when looking to innovate, develop, market and launch a new technology. Its diffusion in the market is a major challenge for marketing. The consequence of a failed market introduction can be financial and reputational loss. Diffusion of innovation research shows a short-coming of researching barriers and challenges which prevent new technologies from being successful. This research sheds some light in the diversity, importance and existence of barriers for the diffusion of innovation. The originality of this investigation is a mixed-methods approach …
Development Of A Multi-Dimensional Matrix For Supply Chain Management, Safaa Sindi
Development Of A Multi-Dimensional Matrix For Supply Chain Management, Safaa Sindi
Plymouth Business School Theses
With the rise of globalisation, more of the world’s cargo depends on sea transportation, spanning countries and continents, increasing the complexity of Supply Chain (SC) operations. Multinational companies and SMEs have faced various challenges adapting to the changing environment. This research explores these complexities and aims to identify the most suitable SC and logistics strategy that companies can incorporate into their business framework. In achieving this, a Multi-Dimensional Matrix (MDM) is developed, firstly by analysing the development of SC and logistics strategies throughout time and dividing them into seven eras. The five earliest eras describe the emergence and development of …

An Econometric Analysis Of Oil/Non-Oil Sectors And Economic Growth In The Gcc: Evidence From Saudi Arabia And The Uae, Ahmed Ali S Alodadi
Plymouth Business School Theses
As a depletable resource oil is a useful source of economic growth, but may not be relied upon for long-term sustainable development. Diversification from oil is needed to achieve this. This research applies three models to examine the most important determinants of oil and non-oil sector economic growth in two of the largest economies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), namely Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The empirical analysis applies the Johansen approach and ECM to access the relationship between all variables, both in the long and short-term. Given the governments’ determination to reduce dependence on oil income, this study …
