St. Mary Diversion Dam – Case Study Of A 100 Year Old Diversion, B. J. Heiner, J. Wagner
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
After 100 years of service, the St. Mary Diversion Dam is being replaced with a new design that will provide more effective fish passage and protection. The diversion is located in northern Montana, adjacent to the east side of Glacier National Park. It diverts water from the St. Mary River 1.21 km (0.75 mile) downstream of Lower St. Mary Lake. The existing 60.35-meter-long and 1.83-meter-high (198-foot-long and 6-foot-high) concrete weir diverts up to 24 cubic meters per second (850 cubic feet per second) design flow from the St. Mary River into the North Fork of the Milk River through a …

Fish Passage Behavior Behavior Through Baffled And Nonbaffled Culvert, M. A. Khodier, Blake P. Tullis
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Culverts can have a negative impact on fish passage. Installing baffles inside culverts can potentially improve culvert fish passage by decreasing the flow velocity and increasing the flow depth. Fish passage behaviors of wild brown trout through a small prototype-scale (0.6 m diameter), 18.3 m in length, baffled, and non-baffled culverts were observed in the laboratory for a variety of discharges and pipe slopes (up to 6%). The baffle height and spacing was 0.15 and 0.9 times the culvert diameter, respectively. The correlation between successful fish passage, sample fish population, and the fish length was evaluated. The influence of baffles …

Technical Developments In Fish Exclusion, Guidance, And Collection Materials, A. L. Peters
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Construction of mills, dams and other structures in rivers and streams, and the withdrawal of water for irrigation or cooling industrial facilities vital to social and economic progress, have impacted the survival of marine life. Barriers and guidance or collection nets can protect fish and aquatic species while allowing water to flow unimpeded for commercial and industrial use. However, nets can attract aquatic growth, fill with debris, degrade with environmental stress, and be expensive to operate and maintain.
A closer look at the technical developments of materials and net designs in diverse settings can offer guidance that will be of …

3d Printing And Healthcare: Will Laws, Lawyers, And Companies Stand In The Way Of Patient Care?, Evan R. Youngstrom
Pace Intellectual Property, Sports & Entertainment Law Forum
Today, our society is on a precipice of significant advancement in healthcare because 3D printing will usher in the next generation of medicine. The next generation will be driven by customization, which will allow doctors to replace limbs and individualize drugs. However, the next generation will be without large pharmaceutical companies and their justifications for strong intellectual property rights. However, the current patent system (which is underpinned by a social tradeoff made from property incentives) is not flexible enough to cope with 3D printing’s rapid development. Very soon, the social tradeoff will no longer benefit society, so it must be …

Cabinet Gorge Dam Spillway Modifications For Tdg Abatement - Design Evolution And Field Performance, S. L. Dunlop, I. A. Willig, G. E. Paul
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Avista is implementing spillway modifications to reduce TDG supersaturation downstream of Cabinet Gorge Dam.The key feature of the modifications is the addition of roughness elements, similar to supercavitating baffle blocks,to break up the spillway jet thereby reducing the depth of plunge and TDG supersaturation. The work is progressing in a step-wise manner. A single bay was modified in 2012 and field tested in 2013. Following the initial field tests, aCFD model was developed to aid in design refinements for the prototype and to improve the design prior to modification of subsequent spillway bays. The prototype demonstrated that spillway modifications are …
Tsallis Entropy Theory For Hydraulic Modeling, Vijay P. Singh
Tsallis Entropy Theory For Hydraulic Modeling, Vijay P. Singh
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Hydraulic structures serve a multitude of human needs. They are needed for water supply, water transfer, water diversion, irrigation, land reclamation, drainage, flood control, hydropower generation, river training, navigation, coastal protection, pollution abatement, and transportation. Many of the structures, such as channels, culverts, and impoundments, have been with us since the birth of human civilization; some, such as spillways, dams, and levees, are more than two centuries old; and some are of more recent origin. In the beginning, structures were designed more or less empirically. Then, engineering and economics constituted the sole foundation of design. Nearly fifty years ago, planning …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The crinoid fauna of Singaporean waters now includes approximately 39 nominal species belonging to six families, all in Order Comatulida. Seventeen of the 22 species collected during the Singapore Strait Biodiversity Workshop (May-June 2013) were previously known from the area. Of the remaining five, Cenometra bella (Colobometridae) is definitely a new record for Singapore, while the taxonomic status of the other four is uncertain. Seventeen additional species, collected almost entirely in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, were not represented in the 2013 survey.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Binding of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to its receptor (GnRHR) on gonadotropes within the anterior pituitary gland is essential to reproduction. In pigs, the GnRHR gene is also located near a genetic marker for ovulation rate, a primary determinant of prolificacy. We hypothesized that pituitary expression of the GnRHR gene is alternatively regulated in genetic strains with elevated ovulation rates (Chinese Meishan and Nebraska Index) vs. standard white crossbred swine (Control).
METHODS: Luciferase reporter vectors containing 5118 bp of GnRHR gene promoter from either the Control, Index or Meishan swine lines were generated. Transient transfection of line-specific, full length, deletion …

Entomology Faculty Publications
The temporal control mechanisms that precisely control animal development remain largely elusive. The timing of major developmental transitions in insects, including molting and metamorphosis, is coordinated by the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E). 20E involves feedback loops to maintain pulses of ecdysteroid biosynthesis leading to its upsurge, whereas the underpinning molecular mechanisms are not well understood. Using the silkworm Bombyx mori as a model, we demonstrated that E75, the 20E primary response gene, mediates a regulatory loop between ecdysteroid biosynthesis and 20E signaling. E75 isoforms A and C directly bind to retinoic acid receptor-related response elements in Halloween gene promoter …

Decision Support Systems For Water Management: Investigating Stakeholder Perceptions Of System Use, Gabriella Balsam
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Water resources are becoming increasingly important to protect, but doing so has proven challenging due to the complex nature of resource management. Many researchers have been trying to develop “usable science” to aid in this endeavor, and one method of this is the development of decision support systems. This has led to the employment of this method as a potential tool for decision makers, scientists, and the interested public to use; yet little literature is available on the success of their implementation. This study attempted to fill the gaps by gathering data through surveys and interviews from stakeholders who are …
Sialylation And Cardiomyocyte Complex N -Glycosylation Protect Against Dilated Cardiomyopathy And Heart Failure, Wei Deng
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the third most common cause of heart failure, often associated with arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death if not controlled. Metabolic and/or environmental factors, such as alcohol abuse, obesity, diabetes and Chagas disease, alter glycoprotein glycosylation, can lead to DCM. Inherited genetic disease, such as the human congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG), causes multi-system manifestations including DCM. Non-congenital changes in glycosylation are also occurred in humans with and in animal models of DCM and heart failure. However, mechanisms responsible for glyco-dependent DCM are not understood. Here we sought to investigate the impact of sialylation and N-glycosylation …

The Psychometric Evaluation And Validation Of A Measure Assessing Pharmacological And Social Alcohol Expectancies In Adolescents, Megan Victoria Mcmurray
The Psychometric Evaluation And Validation Of A Measure Assessing Pharmacological And Social Alcohol Expectancies In Adolescents, Megan Victoria Mcmurray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Extending prior alcohol expectancy measurement research, this researcher (McMurray, 2013) recently developed the Pharmacological and Social Alcohol Expectancy Scale (PSAES). The PSAES is the only alcohol expectancy measure to date that provides adequate coverage of both social expectancies and the anticipated positive pharmacological effects resulting from alcohol consumption, and was developed and validated in a sample of young adults (aged 18-23). Research has shown that adolescents at high risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD) hold higher expectations of reward from alcohol, suggesting that expectancy patterns may help distinguish at-risk youth. Building upon the previous PSAES validation study, the primary purpose …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Artificial intelligence is an emerging technology; something far beyond smartphones, cloud integration, or surgical microchip implantation. Utilizing the work of Ray Kurzweil, Nick Bostrom, and Steven Shaviro, this thesis investigates technology and artificial intelligence through the lens of the cinema. It does this by mapping contemporary concepts and the imagined worlds in film as an intersection of reality and fiction that examines issues of individual identity and alienation. I look at a non-linear timeline of films involving machine advancement, machine intelligence, and stages of post-human development; Elysium (2013) and Surrogates (2009) are about technology as an extension of the self, …

A Life Cycle Assessment Of A Uranium Mine In Namibia, Janine Lambert
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Uranium mining and nuclear power is a controversial topic as of late, especially in light of the recent Fukushima event. Although the actual use of nuclear fuel has minimal environmental impact, its issues come at the very beginning and end of the fuel’s life cycle in both the mining and fuel disposal process. This paper focuses on a life cycle analysis (LCA) of uranium mine in the desert nation of Namibia in Southern Africa. The goal of this LCA is to evaluate the environmental effects of uranium mining. The LCA focuses on water and energy embodiment such that they can …
