Design And Monitoring Of A Small Living Shoreline Scaled For Private Properties On Exposed, Rapidly-Eroding Coasts, D. D. Mcgehee Jun 2016

Design And Monitoring Of A Small Living Shoreline Scaled For Private Properties On Exposed, Rapidly-Eroding Coasts, D. D. Mcgehee

International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures

Living shorelines on the scale of individual private lots are almost exclusively built at sites with reduced wave exposure. This paper describes the design and post construction monitoring of a residential-property-scale living shoreline project on a rapidly eroding, exposed shoreline. The project site is on the north-eastern side of Mobile Bay, AL with a maximum fetch of 129 km. Pre-construction shoreline retreat locally has averaged -80 cm/year since 1997. The final design was modelled on the award-winning (and much larger) Project Greenshores Phase II built in 2007 in nearby Pensacola Bay, FL. The novel feature for both projects is a …

Confined Disposal Facility Improved Weir Designs, C. K. Maglio, B. M. Scully Jun 2016

Confined Disposal Facility Improved Weir Designs, C. K. Maglio, B. M. Scully

International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures

One of the initial constraints of any dredging project is deciding where to place dredged material. When placed upland, materials can be used beneficially, as beach nourishment or for habitat restoration, or can be placed in an upland confined disposal facility (CDF). Several times the solids volume in water is required to fluidized and hydraulically pump the materials. Once in the CDF, materials settle out of suspension, with clarified water decanted. This paper describes in general a current weir design used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and illustrates the innovations of the new Jacksonville District standard weir. …

Baffle Designs To Facilitate Fish Passage In Box Culverts: A Preliminary Study, H. Chanson, W. Uys Jun 2016

Baffle Designs To Facilitate Fish Passage In Box Culverts: A Preliminary Study, H. Chanson, W. Uys

International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures

Waterway culverts and road crossings are very common design in water systems, ranging from rural roads to national highways and urban drainage networks. Engineers and biologists need better, more reliable prediction 'tools' during the design stages to compare the bio-engineering performances of a range of design options. Present expertise in environmental hydraulics of culverts is deficient because of the many empirically-based design guidelines which are sometimes outdated and often inadequate for fish passage. In all the cases, the turbulence of the flowing waters must be optimised efficiently to maximise fish migration. This project focused on the development of simple solutions …

Propensity Score Prediction For Electronic Healthcare Databases Using Super Learner And High-Dimensional Propensity Score Methods, Cheng Ju, Mary Combs, Samuel D. Lendle, Jessica M. Franklin, Richard Wyss, Sebastian Schneeweiss, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The optimal learner for prediction modeling varies depending on the underlying data-generating distribution. Super Learner (SL) is a generic ensemble learning algorithm that uses cross-validation to select among a "library" of candidate prediction models. The SL is not restricted to a single prediction model, but uses the strengths of a variety of learning algorithms to adapt to different databases. While the SL has been shown to perform well in a number of settings, it has not been thoroughly evaluated in large electronic healthcare databases that are common in pharmacoepidemiology and comparative effectiveness research. In this study, we applied and evaluated …

An Overview Of Increasing Incidents Of Bottlenose Dolphin Harassment In The Gulf Of Mexico And Possible Solutions, Courtney S. Vail Jun 2016

An Overview Of Increasing Incidents Of Bottlenose Dolphin Harassment In The Gulf Of Mexico And Possible Solutions, Courtney S. Vail

Human-Animal Interactions Collection

The panhandle region of the Gulf of Mexico is known by scientists, regulatory agencies and conservation organizations as a “hotbed” area of dolphin harassment. Interactions between humans and wild dolphins routinely occur through close vessel approaches or through direct contact associated with commercial or recreational fisheries, swimwith, or feeding activities. Such interactions are of serious concern for wild dolphin welfare and conservation under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act, as well as for human safety. In recent years, an alarming number of dolphins in this region have been fatally wounded by gunshot, hunting arrows, or sharp tools (i.e., screwdriver). The …

Carbonylation Modification Regulates Na/K-At Pasesignaling And Salt Sensitivity: A Review And A Hypothesis, Preeya Shah Phd, Rebecca Martin, Yanling Yan, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Jiang Liu

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Na/K-ATPase signaling has been implicated in different physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Accumulating evidence indicates that oxidative stress not only regulates the Na/K-ATPase enzymatic activity, but also regulates its signaling and other functions. While cardiotonic steroids (CTS)-induced increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is an intermediate step in CTS-mediated Na/K-ATPase signaling, increase in ROS alone also stimulates Na/K-ATPase signaling. Based on literature and our observations, we hypothesize that ROS have biphasic effects on Na/K-ATPase signaling, transcellular sodium transport, and urinary sodium excretion. Oxidative modulation, in particular site specific carbonylation of the Na/K-ATPase α1 subunit, is a critical step in proximal …

An Association Between A Cusk Eel (Bassozetus Sp.) And A Black Coral (Schizopathes Sp.) In The Deep Western Indian Ocean, Andrew R. Gates, Kirsty J. Morris, Daniel O. Jones, Kenneth J. Sulak

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Detailed observations in the deep sea can reveal previously unknown behaviour, species interactions and fine-scale habitat heterogeneity. Here, the first in situ images of the black coral Schizopathes sp. (Anthozoa: Antipatharia) in the deep western Indian Ocean have been obtained from remotely operated vehicle video footage and time-lapse photography. In these images, there appears to be an association with the cusk eel Bassozetus (Family: Ophidiidae). In the primary observation, chance encounters revealed the fish interacted with the anitpatharian on multiple occasions over several days. Subsequent time-lapse camera footage showed the fish remained almost exclusively underneath the antipatharian for the duration …

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

In traditional fMRI, individuals respond to exogenous stimuli and are naïve to the effects of the stimuli on their neural activity patterns. Changes arising in the fMRI signal are analyzed post-hoc to elucidate the spatial and temporal activation of brain regions associated with the tasks performed. The advent of real-time fMRI has enabled a new method to systematically alter brain activity across space and time using neurofeedback training (NFT), providing a new tool to study internally-driven processes such as neuroplasticity. In this work, we combined n-back practice with fMRI-NFT of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to better understand the …

The compositions and methods of the disclosure particularly target the divalent metal transporter expressed on olfactory nerve terminals to transport divalent cation-coated or cation-containing nanoparticles to all regions of brain. It has been found that such divalent cation-containing nanoparticles, including those nanoparticles comprising manganese have affinity for the metal transport receptor proteins. Although this receptor has particular affinity for manganese, it is contemplated that other divalent ions, including magnesium, calcium, and the like may also be bound to such receptors leading to transport of the nanoparticles into the intracellular cytoplasm. Nanoparticles have been developed, therefore, as vehicles for parenteral delivery …

In the last couple of decades, we have seen the widespread ascendancy of the

phenomenon of celebrity in society. Celebrities as a cultural manifestation are not

necessarily something new. We saw that notion in the twentieth century being

exploited by Hollywood through their “star system” as well as by sports teams

hungry to increase their revenues. Now that phenomenon has expanded into areas

that we would not have imagined decades ago, and one of them is in the field of

science. With the advent of social media and the relaxation of social views

regarding stereotypes, we have seen the rise …
