Know Your Feelings And Desires: Targeted Emotional Education As A Vehicle For Improving Safe Sex Health Messages, Sara B. Picklesimer
Know Your Feelings And Desires: Targeted Emotional Education As A Vehicle For Improving Safe Sex Health Messages, Sara B. Picklesimer
Doctoral Dissertations
The current research compared the effectiveness of safe sex interventions that utilize an emotional education narrative style (Targeted Emotional Education Modules, or TEEMs) to those that utilize an imperative style. In a 2 (emotional education vs. imperative narrative style) by 2 (high vs. low normative expertise) by 2 (positive vs. negative valence) experimental design, participants were exposed to a safe sex intervention video in which two females discussed condom use or nonuse following a hookup at a party. Condom use attitudes and intentions were assessed immediately following the intervention, and actual condom use was assessed approximately one month later. While …
The Effectiveness Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Based Group Skills Training In A Traditional High School Setting, Emily Oros
Dissertations
Many adolescents in America suffer from serious symptoms related to borderline personality disorder (BPD) such as self-harming and suicide attempts. These reasons alone provide a strong case for researching effective therapies for adolescents with borderline traits. One treatment for BPD called dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has been demonstrated to be empirically effective; however, in its current form DBT requires significant amounts of time, clinical training, and resources to carry out. Comprehensive application of DBT is too time intensive and cost prohibitive for some agencies to implement. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of the DBT group …
Academic Stress And Working Memory In Elementary School Students, Maile Maria Blashill
Academic Stress And Working Memory In Elementary School Students, Maile Maria Blashill
Dissertations
Although it is sometimes believed that children do not suffer from stress and its negative consequences as adults do, children are equally affected by the harmful potential of excess stress. Because childhood is a period of rapid neurological growth, the effects of unnecessary stress may be more pronounced and enduring throughout the individual’s life. Past investigations suggest that individuals who experience excessive levels of psychological stress associated with anxiety show reduced executive functioning, especially within the area of working memory ability. Further, poor working memory has been shown to affect educational achievement across many different academic subjects. The purpose of …

Project-Based Science Instruction For General-Education Undergraduates And Seventh Graders: Practices, Proficiency, And Pitfalls, Walter S. Borowski, Malcolm P. Frisbie
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
For three semesters we conducted a general-education course designed for both undergraduates and seventh-graders in which students investigated contaminant sources and water quality of a local stream. The middle school students attend a local, county school that draws its students from disadvantaged areas of the town of Richmond, Kentucky. Undergraduates were general-education honors students with little predilection toward science. The instructors guided undergraduates through the project, and our honors students then mentored the middle-schoolers in their scientific endeavors.
Both sets of students serially investigated the chemical and biological properties of a typical upland stream (Tates Creek, Madison County, Kentucky) impacted …

This case study explores the teaching and learning of Arabic at one Catholic university campus, with a focus upon the complex interactions between language and culture in a postmodern globalized context. Specifically, it examines the use of “multimodal culture portfolios” as a means to engage students both linguistically and culturally in classroom and community discourses. Through their interactions and co-construction of knowledge with other participants, these students are led to think about the multiple communicative contexts that are shaping and being shaped by them. Data collection was conducted through survey questionnaires and students' responses to the assigned culture portfolio. The …
Inductive Discipline And Children's Prosocial Behavior: The Role Of Parental Emotion Regulation Strategies, Xinyue Xiao
Inductive Discipline And Children's Prosocial Behavior: The Role Of Parental Emotion Regulation Strategies, Xinyue Xiao
Dissertations - ALL
Although parental inductive discipline has significant influence in children’s prosocial behavior, there is less understanding of how parental emotion regulation strategies influence inductive discipline. This study examined the role of two parental emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) on parental inductive discipline and children’s prosocial behavior. I tested the hypotheses that parental cognitive reappraisal positively correlates with inductive discipline and children’s prosocial behavior whereas parental expressive suppression negatively correlates with inductive discipline in a sample of 59 parents of 3-to-5 year old children. I performed correlation and regression analyses to examine these relationships. Results indicated that expressive suppression …
Thioetherification And Etherification Utilizing Trichloroacetimidates Under Thermal Conditions & Progress Towards An Efficient Synthesis Of Aqx-1125, Brian C. Duffy
Dissertations - ALL
The synthesis of ethers and thioethers is necessary as the motifs are ubiquitous in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and are quite useful in numerous synthetic applications. While common methodologies prepare simple ether and thioether substrates, the harsh conditions of these techniques make them unsuitable for complex molecules. The requirement for these functional groups to be prepared by facile and efficient means has led to an investigation into O - and S – alkylations occurring solely under thermal conditions utilizing trichloroacetimidates.
The alkylation of thiols by the direct displacement of trichloroacetimidates has been accomplished under thermal conditions (heating in refluxing THF). These …

Sunlight induced chlorophyll a fluorescence (SICF) can be used as a probe to estimate chlorophyll a concentrations (Chl) and infer phytoplankton physiology. SICF at ∼685 nm has been widely applied to studies of natural waters. SICF around 740 nm has been demonstrated to cause a narrow reflectance peak at ∼761 nm in the reflectance spectra of terrestrial vegetation. This narrow peak has also been observed in the reflectance spectra of natural waters, but its mechanism and applications have not yet been investigated and it has often been treated as measurement artifacts. In this study, we aimed to interpret …

Anal Fin Pigmentation In Brachyrhaphis Fishes Is Not Used For Sexual Mimicry, Kandace Mary Hugentobler
Anal Fin Pigmentation In Brachyrhaphis Fishes Is Not Used For Sexual Mimicry, Kandace Mary Hugentobler
Theses and Dissertations
Pigmentation patterns can be used as a communication signal in a variety of taxa, and can convey information relative to sexual selection, dominance, and species identification. Pigmentation is also sometimes used in mimicry to deceive the signal receiver into thinking the signaler is something other than itself. Mimicry can occur in several contexts, including sexual interactions, where one sex mimics another. There are relatively few examples of species with females that mimic males. Proposed hypotheses to explain female mimicry of males are that mimicry is used to reduce male harassment or that mimicry is used to display dominance over other …

The Activity Of Alkaline Glutaraldehyde Against Bacterial Endospores And Select Non-Enveloped Viruses, Justen Thalmus Despain
The Activity Of Alkaline Glutaraldehyde Against Bacterial Endospores And Select Non-Enveloped Viruses, Justen Thalmus Despain
Theses and Dissertations
Alkaline glutaraldehyde (GTA) has been used as a high level chemical disinfectant and sterilant for many years and is known to kill a broad spectrum of organisms ranging from vegetative eukaryotes to bacterial endospores. Although the mechanism of sporicidal action has been studied on numerous occasions, GTA's exact mechanism(s) of action are still debated. In addition to the uncertainty of GTA's mechanism(s) of action, GTA has also shown significant variability in the time required to kill endospores and naked viruses. A better knowledge of the lethal mechanism(s) of GTA is needed to understand this discrepancy in kill times for GTA …

The Makings Of An Activist: Navigating Through An Oppressive System And Understanding The Characteristics Of African American Male Activist, Tenille Wallace
All Student Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. minimizes struggles that African Americans have endured since enslavement. Oppression has robbed many minorities from developing their full potential as humans both psychologically and socially. Many African American men grapple with their identity, because their identity is formed by the dominant culture's narrative, developed by European Americans. Thus, the identity of African Americans may not be fully integrate into the dominant narrative which describes the lived experiences envision by African Americans. European Americans, specifically white researchers, maintain the status quo by neglecting African American experiences in academic literature. In order to develop a counter-narrative, researchers need to understand …

The Concerted Regulation Of Intracellular Signaling By Amyloid Precursor Protein And Aβ Peptide, Lisa Kirouac
The Concerted Regulation Of Intracellular Signaling By Amyloid Precursor Protein And Aβ Peptide, Lisa Kirouac
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
It is widely accepted that A-beta (Aβ) generated from amyloid precursor protein (APP) oligomerizes and fibrillizes to form neuritic plaques in the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain, yet little is known about the contribution of APP preceding AD pathogenesis. Our data presented here suggest that APP has a functional role in cell cycle regulation and proliferation. First, we demonstrat that APP is pathologically phosphorylated at Thr668 and that P-APP localizes to the centrosomes. Furthermore, P-APP is proteolytically processed in a cell cycle -dependent manner to generate its pathogenic metabolites. Using Stable Isotope Labeling by Amino Acids in Culture (SILAC) and …
Photic Stress In Symbiont-Bearing Reef Organisms: Analyses Of Photosynthetic Performance, Natasha Mendez-Ferrer
Photic Stress In Symbiont-Bearing Reef Organisms: Analyses Of Photosynthetic Performance, Natasha Mendez-Ferrer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Photo-oxidative stress is one of the key factors that can induce bleaching in reef organisms. With the decline of coral reefs and recurrent bleaching events, many studies have focused on understanding the mechanism behind this phenomenon. Two of the hypotheses that explain how the photosynthetic performance of the symbiont is affected and influences bleaching are: (1) disruption of the photosynthetic pathway by direct damage to the photosystem II (PSII), and (2) by inhibition of the Calvin-Benson cycle. In this dissertation I examine different aspects of photosynthetic performance in symbiont-bearing reef organisms and how this is influenced by symbiont loss and …
