Endless Symbioses Most Intricate, W. John Hayden
Endless Symbioses Most Intricate, W. John Hayden

Orchids, such as our Wildflower of the Year for 2016, Downy Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera pubescens) (Fig. 1), exemplify the interconnectedness of life on Earth. As would be the case for many kinds of plants, pollination comes readily to mind as a prominent example of mutualistic symbiosis. Downy Rattlesnake Plantain is pollinated by bumblebees and other native bees. The bees gain nectar and the orchid gets an efficient means to move pollen from one flower to another; each organism gains benefit from the interaction, the very definition of mutualism. Pollination by bees is widespread among the orchids, but there …
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Bmpr1b, Paulo Andre Machicao Tello
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Bmpr1b, Paulo Andre Machicao Tello
Theses and Dissertations
Methods for preparing an array of potential small molecule inhibitors of Bone Morphogenetic Protein Receptor 1b (BMPR1b) are described. Target molecules were prepared from two general classes: (1) N9-aryl-N6-ureidoadenines, and (2) dicarbamyl iodoacetamides. Recent data from the Peterson lab indicated that both classes might bind to BMPR1b and thus inhibit this key receptor. Docking studies performed using Sureflex Dock suggested the N9-aryl-N6-ureidoadenines would bind to the active site of BMPR1b. In addition antiproliferative activities of dicarbamyl iodoacetamides previously synthesized in the Peterson lab pointed to this moiety as an attractive target for structure activity relationship (SAR) development. Compounds were prepared …
Arsenite Resistance Of Euglena Mutabilis, Nicole Loumarinett Rosendo Mercado, Doug G. Cole (Mentor)
Arsenite Resistance Of Euglena Mutabilis, Nicole Loumarinett Rosendo Mercado, Doug G. Cole (Mentor)
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Euglena are photosynthetic unicellular protozoa. Commonly found in rivers, lakes and ponds, some Euglena are found in toxic environments, like areas of acid mine drainage where they can grow at low pH and in the presence of heavy metals and metalloids such as arsenite (e.g. Euglena mutabilis). The goal of this research is to determine if an Idaho Euglena isolate (SG6) belongs to the E. mutabilis species and to compare it’s level of arsenite resistance with other E. mutabilis strains. As part of the methodology, we have developed microtiter plate assays in which the cells are …
Drag Queens, Thorny Devils And Frilled Lizards: 'Queerness' Takes To The Outback In The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert (1994), Linda Rohrer Paige
Drag Queens, Thorny Devils And Frilled Lizards: 'Queerness' Takes To The Outback In The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert (1994), Linda Rohrer Paige
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This essay explores the gay road movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) as a paradoxical classic of Australian cinema. Three protagonists, drag queens with complicated and frustrated private lives, launch themselves into the Outback, a harsh environment dizzyingly different from the febrile sophistication of Sydney. At first we see only extreme culture-conflict, comic or tragic; but as the film progresses, viewers and characters alike find surprising affinities between the exotic fauna and the extraordinary landscape itself. Ancient and modern images blend to reveal the beauty of a continually changing continent and its people.
Unfulfilled Promises: Discrimination And The Denial Of Essential Health Benefits Under The Affordable Care Act, Jennifer B. Shinall
Unfulfilled Promises: Discrimination And The Denial Of Essential Health Benefits Under The Affordable Care Act, Jennifer B. Shinall
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The passage of the ACA is a source of great pride for President Barack Obama's Administration, and the President undoubtedly hopes that the ACA will be his greatest legacy. 285 As a result, it is difficult to understand why, under his administration, HHS has relinquished its rulemaking authority to the states regarding the core guarantees of the Act. For the individuals living in states in which promised essential health benefits have not yet become a reality, HHS has offered a glimmer of hope. In 2012, the agency released a bulletin stating that it would "revisit" its approach of allowing states …
Historical And Cultural Implications Of Bogomilism, Maja Angelovska, Ruzhica Cacanoska
Historical And Cultural Implications Of Bogomilism, Maja Angelovska, Ruzhica Cacanoska
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Bogomilism represents a spiritual manifestation, dualistic in nature, of a religious expression, and a social and philosophical orientation. The essence of Bogomilism can be followed on the basis of several key postulates, such as dualism, a specific theological and dogmatic characteristic, the support of ethical principles within their social life, and finally the political dimension of teaching the determinants which rise from the overall social and political processes in medieval times. The aim of this article is to present the historical and cultural aspects of this movement, which left visible traces in the spiritual culture of Macedonia, Balkans, and Byzantium.
Temperament And Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia As Contributors To Externalizing Behavior Among Early Adolescents, Tyler Laney Ph.D.
Temperament And Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia As Contributors To Externalizing Behavior Among Early Adolescents, Tyler Laney Ph.D.
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
The current study examines the relationship between temperament and physiological models of externalizing behavior to externalizing behavior in a community sample of early adolescents. The psychophysiological component of vagal tone, as measured by respirator sinus arrhythmia (RSA), is used with an emphasis placed on distinguishing between its function as a state versus trait measure of parasympathetic nervous system activity. Negative affectivity (NA) is proposed as a general risk factor for psychopathology. Emotion regulation, as indexed by effortful control (EC) and basal RSA, is hypothesized to function as a mediator between NA and externalizing behavior. A moderated mediation model is then …
Critical Intercultural Dialogue: Discourse Analysis Of Context, Intersectionality, And Reflexivity In Undergraduate Conversations, Erin Watley
Communication ETDs
Intercultural conflicts continue to persist for numerous reasons. The groups involved remain polarized, individuals tend to primarily concentrate on defending their own point of view, or solutions concentrate on individual actions instead of the consequences perpetuated by complex social systems. The communicative behaviors that often accompany intercultural conflicts also frequently work to sustain them, helping those who are involved to perpetuate dominant narratives and marginalizing social systems in ways in which they are both active and complicit. In this study Critical Discourse Analysis was used to examine the ways that undergraduate students discussed and conceptualized intercultural conflicts during their involvement …

Logic Circuits Based On Extended Molecular Spider Systems, Dandan Mo
Logic Circuits Based On Extended Molecular Spider Systems, Dandan Mo
Computer Science ETDs
Spatial locality brings the advantages of computation speed-up and sequence reuse to molecular computing. In particular, molecular walkers that undergo localized re- actions are of interest for implementing logic computations at the nanoscale. We use molecular spider walkers to implement logic circuits. We develop an extended multi- spider model with a dynamic environment wherein signal transmission is triggered via localized reactions, and use this model to implement three basic gates (AND, OR, and NOT) and a cascading mechanism. We develop an algorithm to automatically generate the layout of the circuit. We use a kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm to simulate circuit …
Proximate And Evolutionary Causes Of Sexual Size Dimorphism In The Crab Spider Mecaphesa Celer, Marie Claire Chelini
Proximate And Evolutionary Causes Of Sexual Size Dimorphism In The Crab Spider Mecaphesa Celer, Marie Claire Chelini
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Animal species’ body sizes result from the balance between selection for survival and selection for reproduction. In species with sexual size dimorphism (SSD), this balance differs between females and males, resulting in distinct sizes despite similar constraints. I used an integrative approach to understand how sexual section, and differences in developmental trajectories and metabolic physiology, resulted in the female biased SSD of the crab spider Mecaphesa celer (Thomisidae). SSD in spiders is often assumed to be a consequence of selection for early male maturation, which should provide males with additional mating opportunities. My results allow us to discard mate …

Sequencing And Comparative Analysis Of De Novo Genome Assemblies Of Streptomyces Aureofaciens Atcc 10762, Julien S. Gradnigo
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Streptomyces aureofaciens is a Gram-positive Actinomycete used for commercial antibiotic production. Although it has been the subject of many biochemical studies, no public genome resource was available prior to this project. To address this need, the genome of S. aureofaciens ATCC 10762 was sequenced using a combination of sequencing platforms (Illumina and 454-shotgun). Multiple de novo assembly methods (SGA, IDBA, Trinity, SOAPdenovo2, MIRA, Velvet and SPAdes) as well as combinations of these methods were assessed to determine which provided the most robust assembly. Combination strategies led to a consistent overestimation of the total genome size. Empirical data from targeted …

Embracing Multiplicity: Autobiographical Personae In Ruth Hall, Gina Marie Schneck
Embracing Multiplicity: Autobiographical Personae In Ruth Hall, Gina Marie Schneck
Theses and Dissertations
Sara Payson Willis Eldredge Farrington Parton, more famously known as the elusive Fanny Fern, employs three autobiographical personae mediated by fiction in her debut novel, Ruth Hall: (1) Ruth Hall, the novel's protagonist; (2) Floy, the fictional Ruth's pseudonym; and (3) Fanny Fern, Parton's real-life pseudonym and the name under which Ruth Hall was published. Together these personae assert a fragmented presence that incorporates various voices and lives, allowing for exploration, growth, and interactivity.Philippe Lejeune's autobiographical contract outlines three specific guidelines for autobiography—that it be a narrative, that it explore personal history, and that it link author and protagonist. Ruth …
Telomere Estimates By Qpcr In American Kestrel Birds, Esteban Palencia, Julie A. Heath (Mentor), Eric J. Hayden (Mentor)
Telomere Estimates By Qpcr In American Kestrel Birds, Esteban Palencia, Julie A. Heath (Mentor), Eric J. Hayden (Mentor)
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Telomeres are highly conserved repeated sequences found at the ends of linear chromosomes. Measuring telomere length has been used to estimate the ages of individuals in several species. The research presented here focuses on developing telomere length estimates in the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), using Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). The verification of a primer pair that can amplify a reference gene and serve to normalize the telomere qPCR data is vitally important. The gene for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) was preferably chosen because it occurs in a single copy in most birds. However, the Kestrel genome has not …
Changing Rights To Family Life: Biolegalities In The Globalization Of Reproduction, Sonja Van Wichelen
Changing Rights To Family Life: Biolegalities In The Globalization Of Reproduction, Sonja Van Wichelen
Socio-Legal Review
This article focuses on Australian court practices that concern the legalization of parenthood for children born out of overseas surrogacy arrangements. Analysing arguments and decisions from federal and local cases, it demonstrates how a “human rights approach” promoted by judges that act in the “best interest of the child” destabilizes the enforcement of local Australian law regarding commercial surrogacy. Ultimately, the article examines how the law interacts with biotechnological changes and how legal justifications engage with biological and social knowledge that are creating a changing landscape of rights and ethics around surrogacy. Using the concept of “biolegality”, it conceptualizes rights …

Wills Eye Hospital Papers
PURPOSE: Describe changes in the retina as vision loss progresses in Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) autosegmentation, and determine if relationship exists between retinal changes and vision loss.
METHODS: From patient records we identified nine LHON patients who underwent periodic neuro-ophthalmologic examinations and high-resolution SD-OCT as part of their care. We describe the impact of LHON progression on each retinal layer, and the relationship between these structural changes and visual acuity using generalized estimating equations and nonparametric tests.
RESULTS: The thickness of the ganglion cell layer (GCL) and inner plexiform layer (IPL) decreased immediately …

The Effects Of A Uniformly Weighted Exercise Suit On Biomarkers Of Bone Turnover In Response To Aerobic Exercise In Postmenopausal Women With Low Bone Density, Haley Frances Terndrup, Alison K. Ventura, Todd Hagobian, Scott Hazelwood
Master's Theses
Current options for maintaining or slowing aging-related bone mineral density (BMD) loss in postmenopausal women primarily include pharmaceutical agents. More recently, physical activity and exercise have been suggested as highly effective, low cost alternatives. Weighted aerobic exercise, utilizing load carriage systems (LCS), is known to increase the gravitational forces impacting bone, creating a higher osteogenic stimulus than standard aerobic exercise. In response to the positive research on aerobic exercise with well-designed LCS, Dr. Lawrence Petrakis, MD, developed a unique 5.44 kg uniformly weighted exercise suit. This study aimed to examine the effects of the uniformly weighted exercise suit on serum …
