Reconstructing The Historical Albuquerque Reach Of The Middle Rio Grande To Evaluate The Influence Of River Engineering On Floodplain Inundation, Jourdan Adair Jul 2016

Reconstructing The Historical Albuquerque Reach Of The Middle Rio Grande To Evaluate The Influence Of River Engineering On Floodplain Inundation, Jourdan Adair

Civil Engineering ETDs

Sustainable floodplain management is essential in achieving a balance between population growth and natural resource protection, especially in the face of climate change. While floodplain development in the Middle Rio Grande Valley has allowed for economic expansion in the region, it has come at a cost to the fragile ecosystem of the Southwest. In this study, the historical Albuquerque reach of the Middle Rio Grande is reconstructed, including floodplain topography, channel characteristics, and land cover from approximately 1918. The impacts of river engineering on flooding events are evaluated by comparing historic and current conditions. Hydrodynamic modeling is first used to …

Collaborative Research Praxis To Establish Baseline Ecoacoustics Conditions In Gitga'at Territory, Max Ritts, Stuart H. Gage, Chris R. Picard, Ethan Dundas, Steven Dundas Jul 2016

Collaborative Research Praxis To Establish Baseline Ecoacoustics Conditions In Gitga'at Territory, Max Ritts, Stuart H. Gage, Chris R. Picard, Ethan Dundas, Steven Dundas

Geography

This paper combines methodological discussion and scientific analysis to convey the results of an effort by the Gitga'at First Nation and academic partners to construct an acoustic baseline in Gitga'at Territory (aka. British Columbia, CA). Between June 2013 and 2014, we collected 257,327 field-recordings from eight sites as part of the Gitga'at Ecological and Cultural Monitoring Program. Our goals were: (1) to develop an acoustic baseline in a portion of Gitga'at Territory prioritized by local decision-makers, (2) to advance Gitga'at research capacity through the collaborative and reflexive structure of our approach. We argue that reorienting ecological knowledge production as praxis-based …

Fine-Grained Detection Of Programming Students’ Frustration Using Keystrokes, Mouse Clicks And Interaction Logs, Hua Leong Fwa Jul 2016

Fine-Grained Detection Of Programming Students’ Frustration Using Keystrokes, Mouse Clicks And Interaction Logs, Hua Leong Fwa

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Prolonged frustration leads to loss of confidence and eventual disinterest in the learning itself. The modelling of frustration in learning is thus important as it informs on the appropriate time to intervene to sustain the interest and motivation of students. To automatically detect learner’s frustration in a naturalistic learning environment, the novel use of keystrokes, mouse clicks and interaction patterns of students captured within the context of a tutoring system was proposed. The modelling approach was described and a comparison was made between the proposed model using Bayesian Network and the baseline Naïve Bayes model. With the formulation of an …

Phycotoxin Loads In Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) From The Indian River Lagoon Estuary System And Coastal Altlantic Waters, Florida: 2002-2011, Jeremy Alan Browning Jul 2016

Phycotoxin Loads In Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) From The Indian River Lagoon Estuary System And Coastal Altlantic Waters, Florida: 2002-2011, Jeremy Alan Browning

Theses and Dissertations

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are dramatic increases of algae that produce phycotoxins, and these toxins lead to subsequent neurological dysfunction with symptomatic illness leading, in extreme cases, to mass mortalities of marine mammals. This presents a conservation challenge since the frequency and severity of HABs are increasing on a global scale. Two HAB species that impact marine mammals residing in and utilizing an eastern Florida estuary and surrounding coastal Atlantic waters are Karenia brevis (K. brevis) and Pyrodinium bahamense (Pyrodinium); these HAB species produce the neurotoxins brevetoxin (PbTx) and saxitoxin (STX), respectively. These toxins are present at times in high …

Surface Cooling Due To Precipitation In The Tropics, Camila Gomes Martins Ramos Jul 2016

Surface Cooling Due To Precipitation In The Tropics, Camila Gomes Martins Ramos

Theses and Dissertations

Precipitation is an important component of the global hydrological cycle. It affects the upper ocean salinity by adding freshwater to the ocean. In addition, precipitation plays a role in cooling the ocean and land surfaces, when the temperature of the raindrops is lower than the temperature of the surface. However, the surface cooling due to precipitation (QP) remains an overlooked feature and is not included in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) models. One might expect that heavy precipitation events may lead to large QP, which can impact the surface temperature, surface energy balance, and local- to regional-scale circulations. …

Student Perceptions Of Scholarly Writing, Shirley P. O'Brien, Dory Marken, Kelsey B. Petrey Jul 2016

Student Perceptions Of Scholarly Writing, Shirley P. O'Brien, Dory Marken, Kelsey B. Petrey

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Learning the process of scholarly writing, including the significance of peer review, is an essential element in the preparation of students for professional practice. This descriptive research study, using Scholarship of Teaching and Learning methodology, explores one approach to teaching scholarly writing in an occupational science/occupational therapy curriculum. The writing assignment was designed to offer multiple points for feedback and revision and instructional features to reinforce learning. A survey of students [n = 169] participating in this scholarly writing project was conducted yearly to gather their perceptions of learning. The results revealed four key elements: instructional strategies are needed …

Role Of Ros And Rns Sources In Physiological And Pathological Conditions, Sergio Di Meo, Tanea Reed, Paola Venditti, Victor Manuel Victor Jul 2016

Role Of Ros And Rns Sources In Physiological And Pathological Conditions, Sergio Di Meo, Tanea Reed, Paola Venditti, Victor Manuel Victor

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

There is significant evidence that, in living systems, free radicals and other reactive oxygen and nitrogen species play a double role, because they can cause oxidative damage and tissue dysfunction and serve as molecular signals activating stress responses that are beneficial to the organism. Mitochondria have been thought to both play a major role in tissue oxidative damage and dysfunction and provide protection against excessive tissue dysfunction through several mechanisms, including stimulation of opening of permeability transition pores. Until recently, the functional significance of ROS sources different from mitochondria has received lesser attention. However, the most recent data, besides confirming …

The Eco-Friendly Intermodal Delivery Network, Sergio Mourelo Jul 2016

The Eco-Friendly Intermodal Delivery Network, Sergio Mourelo

Senior Honors Theses

The design of the distribution process is a strategic issue for almost every company. As the use of advanced technology and automation increases in manufacturing and logistics, the implementation of autonomous and electrical transportation, such as driverless vehicles and electric trucks, has become an interesting topic of study within the last few years, with the main objective of minimizing distribution costs and delivery times. The purpose of this research is to prove that intermodal delivery networks, which may combine a train and several electric vehicles, are more efficient and environmentally friendly than unimodal networks for high volume and long haul …
