Design And Characterization Of A 3d-Printed Attitude Control Thruster For An Interplanetary 6u Cubesat, Terry Stevenson, Glenn Lightsey

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes the design and testing of a miniature, 3D-printed cold gas attitude control thruster for the NASA Ames Research Center BioSentinel mission, an interplanetary small spacecraft that will be launched on the EM-1 flight of SLS. Earth-orbiting small satellites typically use magnetic torque rods for momentum unloading, but these cannot be employed in interplanetary space due to the lack of a strong external magnetic field. ACS thrusters can be used to unload reaction wheels or used directly for attitude control, regardless of the external environment. By 3D printing the propellant tanks, pipes, and nozzles into a single component, …

A key contention of Klein & Barron (2016) is that consciousness does not depend on cortical structures. A critical appraisal suggests they have overestimated the strength of their evidence.

Cellularized Satellites - A Small Satellite Instantiation That Provides Mission And Space Access Adaptability, Talbot Jaeger, Walter Mirczak, Bill Crandall

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites are an exciting technology in the space industry today. For example, over half a dozen private companies have announced plans to build large networks of smallsats to provide remote-sensing imagery data to customers. While smallsats can provide advantages over traditional large satellites, satellites assembled from “building block” cells called satlets could add to those advantages. Through funding from the Phoenix program at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), NovaWurks is developing the cellularization of satellite technology as a way to dramatically decrease the cost of new space assets, while also enabling these assets to be incrementally upgradeable …

Activating Teachers’ Creativity And Moral Purpose In Science Education, Martin Westwell, Sonia Cooke Aug 2016

Activating Teachers’ Creativity And Moral Purpose In Science Education, Martin Westwell, Sonia Cooke

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Over the last three years, the Scientist in Residence program (a collaboration between the Department of Education and Child Development, and Flinders University) investigated a model of professional learning in science education that capitalised upon teachers’ moral purpose and drove their creativity. Insight into how teachers transformed their science classrooms is provided through examples of activities, work samples and clips of teachers describing how they changed their practice and how that, in turn, changed the engagement and achievement of the children. These resources will serve to illustrate some of the principles of practice that the teachers drew upon. In particular, …

Why Is A Steam Curriculum Perspective Crucial To The 21st Century?, Peter Charles Taylor

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Well-recognised as a powerful driver of national economic growth, STEM lies at the heart of calls worldwide for educational reform. In Australia, Chief Scientists are calling for STEM education to better engage students on STEM-related career pathways. In the USA, STEM educators are being urged to produce graduates with creative and innovative abilities required of an increasingly high-tech workforce. However, an equally important challenge for STEM education is to prepare young people with general capabilities for active participation in community and professional forums for addressing ethical issues associated with the global impact of science and technology. Education for sustainable development …

Who Is A Person? Whoever You Want It To Be, Gwen J. Broude Aug 2016

Who Is A Person? Whoever You Want It To Be, Gwen J. Broude

Animal Sentience

Rowlands provides an expanded definition of personhood that preserves the requirement of unity of mental life from the orthodox definition but argues that implicit unity of mind is sufficient for conferring personhood. This allows more or all animals to be considered persons. Implicit unity of mind may be a bridge too far for those who endorse the orthodox account of personhood, and for good reasons. More fundamentally, who gets to decide what personhood entails or that personhood per se matters to such other issues as who receives legal or moral status and consideration? Perhaps we should worry less about definitions …

Searsport is home to the second-busiest industrial port in Maine. Imports include heating oil and road salt and come from as far away as Africa. Situated at the mouth of the Penobscot River and linked to northern Maine and Montreal by rail, Searsport’s Mack Point Marine Intermodal Cargo Terminal (hereinafter “Mack Point”) is a significant international trade hub and source of jobs in Maine’s Midcoast Region. Since 2000, a plan to deepen the harbor around Mack Point has stalled. Supporters of the plan, including business groups, argue that deepening the harbor, or dredging, is necessary to increase and streamline the …

Crabs, Clams, And The Corps: Regional Realities And The Federal Framework, Jessica Hollenkamp

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

Since the invasive European green crab was first detected in the Gulf of Maine over one hundred years ago, its population has dramatically increased, resulting in devastating consequences. This predatory species is remarkably resilient and voracious, feeding on hard- and soft-shell clams, blue mussels, and other bivalve shellfish. There are even reports that the green crab poses a threat to Maine’s most lucrative fishery – the lobster. As the green crab makes its nests in the intertidal zone and subtidal habitats, it destroys native resources such as eelgrass beds and mudflats. Maine’s economy relies heavily on its well-known fishing industry …

This report calls into question the practice of passing along illustrations and anatomical descriptions from the literature without scrutiny. An error made by Leydig (Zeischrift für wissenschaftliche Zoologie 6:1–120, 1854) in characterizing the egg of Asplanchnopus multiceps was perpetuated in authoritative publications (Hyman, The Invertebrates: Acanthocephala, Aschelminthes, and Entoprocta. Closed-State Inactivation Involving An Internal Gate In Kv4.1 Channels Modulates Pore Blockade By Intracellular Quaternary Ammonium Ions., Jeffrey D. Fineberg, Tibor G. Szanto, Gyorgy Panyi, Manuel Covarrubias

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Voltage-gated K(+) (Kv) channel activation depends on interactions between voltage sensors and an intracellular activation gate that controls access to a central pore cavity. Here, we hypothesize that this gate is additionally responsible for closed-state inactivation (CSI) in Kv4.x channels. These Kv channels undergo CSI by a mechanism that is still poorly understood. To test the hypothesis, we deduced the state of the Kv4.1 channel intracellular gate by exploiting the trap-door paradigm of pore blockade by internally applied quaternary ammonium (QA) ions exhibiting slow blocking kinetics and high-affinity for a blocking site. We found that inactivation gating seemingly traps benzyl-tributylammonium …

© 2016 American Chemical Society. Plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) regulates the fibrinolysis pathway by inhibiting the protease activity of plasminogen activators. PAI-1 works in concert with vitronectin (VN), an extracellular protein that aids in localization of active PAI-1 to tissues. The Peterson laboratory demonstrated that Cu(II) and other transition metals modulate the stability of PAI-1, exhibiting effects that are dependent on the presence or absence of the somatomedin B (SMB) domain of VN. The study presented here dissects the changes in molecular dynamics underlying the destabilizing effects of Cu(II) on PAI-1. We utilize backbone amide hydrogen/deuterium exchange monitored …

© 2016 American Chemical Society. Ammonia binds to two sites in the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of Photosystem II (PSII). The first is as a terminal ligand to Mn in the S2 state, and the second is at a site outside the OEC that is competitive with chloride. Binding of ammonia in this latter secondary site results in the S2 state S = 5/2 spin isomer being favored over the S = 1/2 spin isomer. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we find that ammonia binds to the secondary site in wild-type Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 PSII, but not in D2-K317A mutated …

Micro-Rna Profiling In Ovarian Cancer, Jin Q. Cheng Aug 2016

Micro-Rna Profiling In Ovarian Cancer, Jin Q. Cheng

USF Patents

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) represent a novel class of genes that function as negative regulators of gene expression and have recently been implicated in several cancers. However, aberrant miRNA expression and its clinicopathological significance in human ovarian cancer have not been well documented. Numerous miRNAs are shown altered in human ovarian cancer, significantly miR-214, -199a*, -200a, -100, -125b, -30d, -221, -222, -126, and -24. Four miRNAs (miR-221, miR-222, miR-126, and miR-24) were found to be deregulated in all four histological types of ovarian carcinoma (serous, mucinous, endometrioid, and clear cell). Frequent deregulation of miR-214, -199a*, -200a and -100 was demonstrated in ovarian …

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Numerous methods for classifying gene activity states based on gene expression data have been proposed for use in downstream applications, such as incorporating transcriptomics data into metabolic models in order to improve resulting flux predictions. These methods often attempt to classify gene activity for each gene in each experimental condition as belonging to one of two states: active (the gene product is part of an active cellular mechanism) or inactive (the cellular mechanism is not active). These existing methods of classifying gene activity states suffer from multiple limitations, including enforcing unrealistic constraints on the overall proportions of active and inactive …
