2016 Nrpt: Oil Spill Response Options For The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Coastal Response Research Center (Crrc)
Coastal Response Research Center
On May 25-26, 2016, the Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC)1 and Disaster Response Center (DRC) co-sponsored a NOAA Regional Preparedness Training (NRPT) Workshop at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). The workshop focused on preparedness, planning and improvement of response to a potential oil spill that threatened the FGBNMS. The workshop examined response options such as dispersant use and in-situ burning (ISB) while developing the framework for an Environmental Tradeoff Analysis (ETA) to evaluate response options. The workshop also provided the opportunity for the spill response community to build relationships, understand the role each group plays in a …

Icelandic Fisheries: Scenario Planning For Climate Change, Tara Sorrels
Icelandic Fisheries: Scenario Planning For Climate Change, Tara Sorrels
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This study aimed to develop an understanding of how a scenario planning process could be used to assist businesses to adapt to climate change. The focus of this study was on the Icelandic fishing industry since Iceland is experiencing firsthand climate change impacts. Mitigation strategies are the main focus in climate change research, but this study focused on a possible adaptation method that requires changing management practices in order to reduce the impact of climate change on the economy. Tours of Icelandic fisheries and interviews with individuals within the Icelandic fishing industry were conducted to assess the current adaptive capacity …
Expanding The Applicability Of Raman Spectroscopy For Monitoring Photocatalytic Degradation, Franklyn Wallace
Expanding The Applicability Of Raman Spectroscopy For Monitoring Photocatalytic Degradation, Franklyn Wallace
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Compared to other types of wastewater pollutants, dangerous chemical compounds such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and herbicides are difficult to remove and consequently being detected (at least in part because detection limits have decreased) in drinking water at increasing concentrations. Photocatalytic degradation degrades harmful compounds to innocuous end products using energy from light. Although it is effective and cost-efficient, the underlying chemical mechanisms are not understood well enough to ensure that dangerous intermediate products are not formed during the degradation process. Raman spectroscopy can be used to analyze photocatalytic degradation reactions in real time, identifying intermediate products based on spectral features. …
Teacher And Student Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of First-Year Composition In Preparing L2 Students For Discipline-Specific Writing, Elena Shvidko
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
The study described in this article was conducted to gather teachers’ and students’ perspectives about the effectiveness of a first-year composition course in preparing students for discipline-specific writing in college. Data were collected in a large research U.S. university through a student survey (n=32) and teacher interviews (n=5). The results show that the majority of the students and all instructors found the course effective and its assignments helpful in preparing students for writing in their university classes. In addition, all participated instructors also tried to improve the course by employing a variety of approaches and strategies, such as implementing assignments …

Peace Through Partnership: Igo Membership And Military Spending, Isaac M. Castellano
Peace Through Partnership: Igo Membership And Military Spending, Isaac M. Castellano
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper examines the role International Intergovernmental Organization (IGO) memberships have on defense expenditures, arguing that state leaders substitute high military spending rates for IGO membership as the information transmission mechanisms of IGOs offer more accurate information about the security environment that diminishes the need for military spending. States do not become pacifists as they are integrated into the international network of IGOs; rather, they find a reduced usefulness in and need for a robust military. This project empirically tests this relationship, and findings indicate a small but significant relationship between military spending and IGO membership. The most integrated states …
Extending Genome-Wide Association Study (Gwas) Results To Test Classic Anthropological Hypotheses: Human Third Molar Agenesis And The ‘Probable Mutation Effect’, Alexis Sullivan, Adrijana Vukelic, Jacob Cohen, George (Pj) Perry
Extending Genome-Wide Association Study (Gwas) Results To Test Classic Anthropological Hypotheses: Human Third Molar Agenesis And The ‘Probable Mutation Effect’, Alexis Sullivan, Adrijana Vukelic, Jacob Cohen, George (Pj) Perry
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
A genome-wide association study (GWAS) identifies regions of the genome that likely affect the variable state of a phenotype of interest. These regions can then be studied with population genetic methods to make inferences about the evolutionary history of the trait. There are increasing opportunities to use GWAS results – even from clinically-motivated studies – for tests of classic anthropological hypotheses. One such example, presented here as a case study for this approach, involves tooth development variation related to dental crowding. Specifically, more than 10% of humans fail to develop one or more permanent third molars (M3 agenesis). M3 presence/absence …
Farm Animal Welfare And Human Health, Alan M. Goldberg
Farm Animal Welfare And Human Health, Alan M. Goldberg
Agribusiness Collection
The paper examines the relationship between farm animal welfare, industrial farm animal production, and human health consequences. The data suggest that when the animal welfare of land-based farm animals is compromised, there are resulting significant negative human health consequences due to environmental degradation, the use of non-therapeutic levels of antibiotics for growth promotion, and the consequences of intensification. This paper accepts that even if meat and fish consumption is reduced, meat and fish will be part of the diet of the future. Industrial production modified from the current intensified systems will still be required to feed the world in 2050 …

A Simplified Direct Lipid Mixing Lipoplex Preparation: Comparison Of Liposomal-, Dimethylsulfoxide-, And Ethanol-Based Methods, Joseph Meisel, George Gokel
A Simplified Direct Lipid Mixing Lipoplex Preparation: Comparison Of Liposomal-, Dimethylsulfoxide-, And Ethanol-Based Methods, Joseph Meisel, George Gokel
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Established transfection methodology often uses commercial reagents, which must be formed into liposomes in a sequence of about half a dozen steps. The simplified method reported here is a direct lipid mixing approach that requires fewer steps, less manipulation, and is less time-consuming. Results are comparable to those obtained with more commonly used methods, as judged by a variety of analytical techniques and by comparisons of transfection results. The method reported here may be applied to non-liposome-forming compounds, thereby greatly expanding the range of structures that can be tested for transfection ability.

Review Of Potential Fisheries And Marine Management Impacts On The South-Western Australian White Shark Population, S M. Taylor, J M. Braccini, R Mcauley, Wayne J. Fletcher
Fisheries Research Reports
Following five fatal incidents involving white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) off the lower west coast of Western Australia between September 2011 and July 2012, as well as other highly-publicised non-fatal encounters with this species, in 2012 the State Government funded several new initiatives to better understand white sharks in Western Australia and the likely effectiveness of any community safety interventions in Western Australian waters.

Optimal Design Of Low-Density Snp Arrays For Genomic Prediction: Algorithm And Applications, Xiao-Lin Wu, Jiaqi Xu, Guofei Feng, George R. Wiggans, Jeremy F. Taylor, Jun He, Changsong Qian, Jiansheng Qiu, Barry Simpson, Jeremy Walker, Stewart Bauck
Optimal Design Of Low-Density Snp Arrays For Genomic Prediction: Algorithm And Applications, Xiao-Lin Wu, Jiaqi Xu, Guofei Feng, George R. Wiggans, Jeremy F. Taylor, Jun He, Changsong Qian, Jiansheng Qiu, Barry Simpson, Jeremy Walker, Stewart Bauck
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
Low-density (LD) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays provide a cost-effective solution for genomic prediction and selection, but algorithms and computational tools are needed for the optimal design of LD SNP chips. A multiple-objective, local optimization (MOLO) algorithm was developed for design of optimal LD SNP chips that can be imputed accurately to medium-density (MD) or high-density (HD) SNP genotypes for genomic prediction. The objective function facilitates maximization of non-gap map length and system information for the SNP chip, and the latter is computed either as locus-averaged (LASE) or haplotype-averaged Shannon entropy (HASE) and adjusted for uniformity of the SNP distribution. …
The Problem Of Obviousness, Benjamin Goldberg
The Problem Of Obviousness, Benjamin Goldberg
Sophia and Philosophia
1. The Problem of Obviousness
There’s no such thing as obviousness.
This isn’t, of course, itself obvious; nor is it clear why it should be a problem. So let me start elsewhere, with the anti-vaccine movement. A friend of mine laid out the ‘obvious’ position: there are facts and rationality on one side, unenlightened ignorance and bigotry on the other. Scientists versus fools, and the fools don’t even know what game is being played.
