Annual decreases in corn yield caused by diseases were estimated by surveying members of the Corn Disease Working Group in 22 corn-producing states in the United States and in Ontario, Canada, from 2012 through 2015. Estimated loss from each disease varied greatly by state and year. In general, foliar diseases such as northern corn leaf blight, gray leaf spot, and Goss’s wilt commonly caused the largest estimated yield loss in the northern United States and Ontario during nondrought years. Fusarium stalk rot and plant-parasitic nematodes caused the most estimated loss in the southern-most United States. The estimated mean economic loss …

A Note On The Log-Alpha-Skew-Normal Model With Geochemical Applications., Osvaldo Venegas, Heleno Bolfarine, Diego I. Gallardo, Alberto Vergara-Fernandez, Hector W. Gomez

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper we introduce an extension of the log-normal distribution, based on the alpha-skew-normal distribution introduced by Elal-Olivero [10]. Basic properties, moments, moment estimators, maximum likelihood estimators and a simulation study are discussed. We apply the approach developed in this paper to data sets related to neodymium and nickel concentrations in soil samples. Model fit indicates good performance of the proposed model when compared with less flexible models.

Numerical results and simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology.

Dynamics Of A Worm Propagation Model With Quarantine In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nguyen Huu Khanh Sep 2016

Dynamics Of A Worm Propagation Model With Quarantine In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nguyen Huu Khanh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We study the attacking behavior of possible worms inWireless Sensor Network (WSNs). Using epidemic theory, we propose a susceptible-infectious-quarantine-recovered (SIQR)model to describe dynamics of worms propagation with quarantine in the wireless sensor network. Mathematical analysis shows that dynamics of the spread of worms are determined by the threshold R0. If R0 ≤ 1, the worm-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, and if R0 > 1, the worm-endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. Lyapunov functional method as well as geometric approach are used for proving the global stability of equilibria. A numerical investigation is carried out to confirm the analytical results. As …

Online Rotating Pi Controller For Ncs Over Communication Constraints, Pooya Hajebi, Seyed Mohammad Taghi Almodarresi Sep 2016

Online Rotating Pi Controller For Ncs Over Communication Constraints, Pooya Hajebi, Seyed Mohammad Taghi Almodarresi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

A new method for controlling the plant in networked control systems (NCSs) is proposed. Network time delay and packet loss are two major drawbacks in data communication networks which make NCSs unstable. Unlike previous related research works, this new proposed rotating PI controller based method has the advantage of considering time delay and packet loss effects simultaneously. Time delay is estimated online and then used for tuning the PI controller by rotating the phase plane, while packet loss sequences are modeled by Markov chain. This novel method improves the performance compared to other methods, especially when packets are dropped consecutively …

Stability Analysis Of Implicit-Explicit Class For Solving Odes And Ddes, Iman H. Ibrahim, Fatma M. Yousry

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Implicit-Explicit schemes have been widely used, it reduces the computational work for solving differential equations which have both stiff and non-stiff parts . In this paper an implicit-explicit linear multistep method for solving ordinary and delay differential equations is introduced. In both cases we are going to study the stability of the method using two approaches and the stability regions will be ploted. Numerical tests are introduced.

Annular Regions Containing All The Zeros Of A Polynomial Via Special Numbers, Eze R. Nwaeze Sep 2016

Annular Regions Containing All The Zeros Of A Polynomial Via Special Numbers, Eze R. Nwaeze

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we obtain some results concerning annular regions containing all the zeros of a given polynomial. These annular regions have radii in terms of the Bell numbers, Pell numbers, Stirling numbers, Fibonacci numbers, Motzkin numbers, Catalan numbers, and/or the Schr¨oder numbers. Also, we show, by means of examples, that for some polynomials our results sharpen some of the known results in this direction.

Algebraic Iterative Reconstruction-Reprojection (Airr) Method For High Performance Sparse-View Ct Reconstruction, Ali Pour Yazdanpanah, Emma E. Regentova, George Bebis Sep 2016

Algebraic Iterative Reconstruction-Reprojection (Airr) Method For High Performance Sparse-View Ct Reconstruction, Ali Pour Yazdanpanah, Emma E. Regentova, George Bebis

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The reconstruction from sparse- or few-view projections is one of important problems in computed tomography limited by the availability or feasibility of a large number of projections. Working with a small number of projections provides a lower radiation dose and a fast scan time, however an error associated with the sparse-view reconstruction increases significantly as the space sparsity increases that may cause the reconstruction process to diverge. The iterative reconstruction-re-projection (IRR) algorithm which uses filtered back projection (FBP) reconstruction has been used for the sparse-view computed tomography applications for several years. The IRR-TV method has been developed as a higher …

A Gpgpu Physarum Cellular Automaton Model, Nikolaos I. Dourvas, Georgios Ch. Sirakoulis, Philippos Tsalides

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Scientists have been gaining inspiration from several natural processes and systems to find fine solutions in many complex hard to solve engineering problems for many years now. Nevertheless, most of these natural systems suffer from great amount of time to perform; thus, scientists are seeking for computational tools and methods that could encapsulate in a conscious way nature’s genius, dealing at the same moment with time complexity. In this conquest, Cellular Automata (CA) proposed long time ago by John von Neumann, can be considered as a promising candidate. CA have the ability to capture the essential features of systems in …

Ikeda Map And Phase Conjugated Ring Resonator Chaotic Dynamics, V. Aboites, D. Liceaga, A. Kiryanov, M. Wilson Sep 2016

Ikeda Map And Phase Conjugated Ring Resonator Chaotic Dynamics, V. Aboites, D. Liceaga, A. Kiryanov, M. Wilson

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The dynamical behavior of a laser beam confined within a ring-phase-conjugated resonator modeled with a chaos generating element based on the Ikeda map is presented. Using the matrix ray optics, explicit expressions are obtained for the elements of the 2x2 dynamical matrix, which is found in terms of the specific map parameters, state variables and resonator parameters. The phase diagrams obtained show that the so called Ikeda map beams present complex dynamics, including critical points and metastability.

Co-Dynamics Of Trypanosomiasis And Cryptosporidiosis, Kazeem Oare Okosun, Mirirai Mukamuri, Oluwole Daniel Makinde

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper a mathematical model for trypanosomiasis-cryptosporidium co-infection dynamics is investigated to give a theoretical mathematical account of the impact of cryptosporidiosis on trypanosomiasis dynamics. The model steady states are analyzed. The disease-free equilibrium is shown to be locally asymptotically stable when the associated epidemic basic reproduction number for the model is less than unity. The trypanosomiasis only and the cryptosporidiosis only model are each found to exhibit transcritical and backward bifurcation phenomena respectively. While the co-infection model exhibits the possibility of multiple endemic equilibria. From the sensitivity analysis, the trypanosomiasis reproductive number Rlt 0 is more sensitive to …

Hydromagnetic Peristaltic Transport Of Variable Viscosity Fluid With Heat Transfer And Porous Medium, F. M. Abbasi, T. Hayat, B. Ahmad Sep 2016

Hydromagnetic Peristaltic Transport Of Variable Viscosity Fluid With Heat Transfer And Porous Medium, F. M. Abbasi, T. Hayat, B. Ahmad

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This article examines the peristaltic transport of variable viscosity fluid in a planar channel with heat transfer. The fluid viscosity is taken temperature dependent. The fluid is electrically conducting in the presence of a constant applied magnetic field. Both channel and magnetic field possess the inclined considerations. An incompressible fluid saturates the porous space. Heat transfer analysis is carried out in the presence of viscous dissipation and Joule heating. The resulting problems are solved numerically. A parametric study is performed to predict the impact of embedded variables. Results indicate that the fluid with variable viscosity has higher value of pressure …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The change in ambient temperature plays a key role in body thermoregulation. The use of protective layer (clothes) has not only ethical values but also acts as a shield to combat with the severe environmental conditions. A mathematical model on bioheat transfer has been formulated with appropriate diffusing and matching conditions at the dermal layers and the protective layer. The finite difference scheme has been employed to solve the model and the conditions for the thermal stability of tissue temperatures were illustrated using MATLAB and FlexPDE software’s. The results obtained are applicable to a wide range of problems to maintain …

A Comparative Study Of A Face Components Based Model Of Ethnic Classification Using Gabor Filters, Hajra Momin, Jules-Raymond Tapamo

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The determination of ethnicity of an individual can be very useful in face recognition and person identification. In this paper, we propose a model of ethnic classification of a person from face images. The proposed model detects facial landmarks such as eyes, nose and mouth in a face image and then applies Gabor filters to each component to extract key facial features. K-Means, Naive Bayesian(NB), Multilayer Perceptron(MLP), SVM(Support Vector Machines) are then used to classify the human face image into different ethnic groups. Classification is performed in 2-class ( Asian and Non- Asian), 3-class (Asian,White and Black) or 4-class (Asian, …

Riparian Fuel Treatments In The Western Usa: Challenges And Considerations, Kathleen A. Dwire, Kristen E. Meyer, Gregg Riegel, Timothy Burton Sep 2016

Riparian Fuel Treatments In The Western Usa: Challenges And Considerations, Kathleen A. Dwire, Kristen E. Meyer, Gregg Riegel, Timothy Burton

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

Fuel reduction treatments are being conducted throughout watersheds of the western United States to reduce hazardous fuels in efforts to decrease the risk of high-severity fire. The number of fuel reduction projects that include near-stream environments is increasing, bringing new challenges to riparian management. Riparian areas are protected by administrative regulations, some of which are largely custodial and restrict active management. However, riparian areas have also been affected by fire suppression, land use, and human disturbance, so manipulative treatments of vegetation and other fuels may be needed in some locations to maintain riparian biodiversity and restore valued functions. This report …

Possessing History And American Innocence: James Baldwin, William F. Buckley, Jr., And The 1965 Cambridge Debate, Daniel Mcclure Ph.D.

History Faculty Publications

The 1965 debate at Cambridge University between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley, Jr., posed the question: “Has the American Dream been achieved at the Expense of the American Negro?” Within the contours of the debate, Baldwin and Buckley wrestled with the ghosts of settler colonialism and slavery in a nation founded on freedom and equality. Framing the debate within the longue durée, this essay examines the deep cultural currents related to the American racial paradox at the height of the Civil Rights movement. Underscoring the changing language of white resistance against black civil rights, the essay argues that …

Hell And High Water: Diminished Septic System Performance In Coastal Regions Due To Climate Change, Jennifer A. Cooper, George W. Loomis, José A. Amador

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Climate change may affect the ability of soil-based onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) to treat wastewater in coastal regions of the Northeastern United States. Higher temperatures and water tables can affect treatment by reducing the volume of unsaturated soil and oxygen available for treatment, which may result in greater transport of pathogens, nutrients, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) to groundwater, jeopardizing public and aquatic ecosystem health. The soil treatment area (STA) of an OWTS removes contaminants as wastewater percolates through the soil. Conventional STAs receive wastewater from the septic tank, with infiltration occurring deeper in the soil profile. …

Context-Free Petri Net Controlled Grammars Under Parallel Firing Strategy, Gairatzhan Mavlankulov, Laula Zhumabayeva, Mohamed Othman, Tamara Zhukabayeva, Mohd Hasan Selamat, Sherzod Turaev

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Petri nets are becoming one of the most important mathematical tools in Computer Science. In this paper we propose a new firing strategy in Petri Nets called a parallel firing strategy and study some mathematical properties of concurrent grammars which are controlled by Petri nets under parallel firing strategies. We propose some modes on this strategy and a notion of concurrent context-free grammar which is a similar to the context-free Petri nets under parallel firing strategy, where parallel firing modes of context-free Petri nets were converted to rule applications in context-free grammars. Moreover, we investigate some their properties.

Mice With A Heterozygous Lrp6 Deletion Have Impaired Fracture Healing, Travis A. Burgers, Juan F. Vivanco, Juraj Zahatnansky, Andrew J. Vander Moren, James J. Mason, Bart O. Williams

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Bone fracture non-unions, the failure of a fracture to heal, occur in 10%–20% of fractures and are a costly and debilitating clinical problem. The Wnt/β-catenin pathway is critical in bone development and fracture healing. Polymorphisms of linking low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6), a Wnt-binding receptor, have been associated with decreased bone mineral density and fragility fractures, although this remains controversial. Mice with a homozygous deletion of Lrp6 have severe skeletal abnormalities and are not viable, whereas mice with a heterozygous deletion have a combinatory effect with Lrp5 to decrease bone mineral density. As fracture healing closely models embryonic skeletal …
