When Do You Procrastinate? Sleep Quality And Social Lag Jointly Predict Self-Regulatory Failure At Work, Jana Kuhnel, Ronald Bledow, Nicolas Feuerhahn
When Do You Procrastinate? Sleep Quality And Social Lag Jointly Predict Self-Regulatory Failure At Work, Jana Kuhnel, Ronald Bledow, Nicolas Feuerhahn
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigates antecedents of procrastination, the tendency to delay the initiation or completion of work activities. We examine this phenomenon from a self-regulation perspective and argue that depleted self-regulatory resources are an important pathway to explain why and when employees procrastinate. The restoration of self-regulatory resources during episodes of non-work is a prerequisite for the ability to initiate action at work. As sleep offers the opportunity to replenish self-regulatory resources, employees should procrastinate more after nights with low-quality sleep and shorter sleep duration. We further propose that people's social sleep lag amplifies this relationship. Social sleep lag arises if …

School Policy, Food And Physical Activity Environment, And Childhood Obesity, Ruicui Liu
Health Services Research Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of school food and physical activity environments on energy balance-related behaviors and Body Mass Index (BMI) and to simulate the effect of school-based nutrition and physical activity policies on childhood obesity prevention. Four models based on the Social Ecological Framework of childhood obesity were developed. Parameters of these models were calibrated and validated with empirical data derived from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study – Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 and the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Study. The correlation between observed and simulated BMI was 0.85 for 5th grade children …

Technological Opacity, Predictability, And Self-Driving Cars, Harry Surden, Mary-Anne Williams
Technological Opacity, Predictability, And Self-Driving Cars, Harry Surden, Mary-Anne Williams
Cardozo Law Review
Autonomous or "self-driving" cars are vehicles that drive themselves without human supervision or input. Because of safety benefits that they are expected to bring, autonomous vehicles are likely to become more common. Notably, for the first time, people will share a physical environment with computer-controlled machines that can both direct their own activities and that have considerable range of movement. This represents a distinct change from our current context. Today people share physical spaces either with machines that have free range of movement, but are controlled by people (e.g. automobiles) or with machines that are controlled by computers, but highly …
The Humanities, Brain Science And The Unforgiving Minute, Raymond L. Forbes
The Humanities, Brain Science And The Unforgiving Minute, Raymond L. Forbes
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Many independent authors from a wide variety of disciplines have come to a similar, if somewhat startling, conclusion; that we are currently at another “tipping point” in human history. Our arrival at this particular juncture in time seems to be the consequence of a potent mix of past trends and contemporary forces. Collectively, these energies act to feed exponentially growing technical and social change. In addition, there appears to be some agreement by thoughtful observers that the turmoil of our present epoch can be personified by four factors: volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity More specifically, the technical and societal changes …

A Fully Integrated Microfluidic Device For Point-Of-Care Monitoring Of Antithrombotics, Leanne F. Harris, Paul Rainey, Tomas L. Lindahl, Anthony J. Killard
Articles
The simplicity and efficiency of point of care diagnostics have revolutionised patient care. Current methods for measuring hypercoagulability often require trained technicians, large blood volumes, and result in long turnaround times. Standard testing for hypercoagulable disorders is performed in the central laboratory using automated coagulation analysers. However the trend is moving towards the development and implementation of point of care testing, as a result of the ever increasing number of patients on antithrombotic therapy. We present a novel microfluidic device and assay for monitoring the effect of two anticoagulants, unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). The assay …

Reading Deboer And Obergefell Through The "Moral Readings Versus Originalisms" Debate: From Constitutional "Empty Cupboards" To Evolving Understandings, Linda C. Mcclain
Faculty Scholarship
This article assesses the debate over “moral reading” and “originalist” approaches to constitutional interpretation by evaluating the momentous constitutional controversy in the United States over access by same-sex couples to civil marriage. Justice Kennedy’s landmark opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), which held that such couples have a fundamental right to marry, employed a “moral reading” in emphasizing dual forms of evolving understanding: of constitutional guarantees of equality and the “promise of liberty” and of the institution of marriage. By contrast to the dissenters, the majority rejected a static, narrow reading of the fundamental right to marry – and marriage …
Stakeholder Engagement In Marine Protected Area Network Planning In Southern California: Understanding Fishing, Government, And Environmental Perspectives, Nicole Catalano
Master's Theses
This study focuses on the MPA network planning process associated with California’s Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) in southern California, occurring between 2008-2009. This case study demonstrates the ongoing complexity of MPA planning efforts in balancing social and science goals and reinforces the view that public participation alone may not be sufficient in achieving the type of stakeholder support needed for successful MPA implementation. Using a qualitative approach, this research draws upon the field of public participation to examine the efficacy of the planning process from the perspectives of fishing, government, and environmental stakeholders. Findings reveal significant differences in perceptions …
Psychopathology And Creativity Among Creative And Non-Creative Professions, Victor Kwan
Psychopathology And Creativity Among Creative And Non-Creative Professions, Victor Kwan
Master's Theses
The mad genius debate has been a topic that has been discussed in both popular culture and academic discourse. The current study sought to replicate previous findings that linked psychopathology to creativity. A total of 165 biographies of eminent professionals (artists, scientists, athletes) were rated on 19 mental disorders using a three point scale of not present (0), probable (1), and present (2) for potential symptoms. Athletes served as an eminent but not creative comparison group in order to discern whether fame, independent of creativity, was associated with psychopathology. Comparison of proportion analyses were conducted to identify differences of proportion …
Experiments With And Implementation Of A Context Sensitive Text Summarizer, Charles Joseph Bocage
Experiments With And Implementation Of A Context Sensitive Text Summarizer, Charles Joseph Bocage
Master's Theses
Automatic text summarization is the ability to obtain key ideas from a text passage using as few words as possible. With the increase in data on the web, manual summarization of web pages has become unfeasible, and the need for automatic text summarization has become ever greater. This project explored and implemented various parts of the automatic text summarization process for an open source search engine, Yioop. These parts included stemming, text segmentation, term frequency weighting, automatic sentence compression, and content management system detection.
In addition, experiments were conducted on different pre-existing Yioop summarizers. These results served as a baseline …
Trapped In Endoderm-1 Reveals A Novel Role For Fruitless In Drosophila Melanogaster Courtship, Peter Luu
Trapped In Endoderm-1 Reveals A Novel Role For Fruitless In Drosophila Melanogaster Courtship, Peter Luu
Master's Theses
Understanding how genes can direct behaviors has been a prevailing goal of neuroscience. Courtship in D. melanogaster is a complex yet stereotyped array of behaviors established by sex-specific genetic pathways mediated by sensory inputs by the nervous system. However, much remains to be discovered about the neurobiological and molecular mechanisms that regulate this complex set of behaviors. We have identified a group of cells expressing Trapped in endoderm 1 (Tre1) in which male Fruitless proteins are required to reduce the speed of courtship initiation. Tre1 encodes a G-protein-coupled receptor required for establishment of cell polarity and cell migration and has …
Cux2-Positive Radial Glial Cells Generate Diverse Subtypes Of Neocortical Projection Neurons And Macroglia, Ton Dan Nguyen
Cux2-Positive Radial Glial Cells Generate Diverse Subtypes Of Neocortical Projection Neurons And Macroglia, Ton Dan Nguyen
Master's Theses
The mammalian neocortex is 6-layered structure that develops in an “inside-out” manner, with cells of the deep layers (Layers 5-6) born first. Cells of the superficial outer layers (Layers 2-4) are generated subsequently and must migrate past older born cells to their final laminar position. Pioneering transplant studies suggested a progressive lineage restriction model, which posits that early neural stem cells (or radial glial cells, RGCs) are multipotent and sequentially generate different types of cortical neurons based on birthdate. Recently published work from Franco et al. (2012) argues against this paradigm, and proposes the existence of a subclass of neural …

Contributions Of Television Use To Beliefs About Fathers And Gendered Family Roles Among First-Time Expectant Parents, Patty X. Kuo, L. Monique Ward
Contributions Of Television Use To Beliefs About Fathers And Gendered Family Roles Among First-Time Expectant Parents, Patty X. Kuo, L. Monique Ward
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
TV content has been documented to portray a limited range of gender roles, and to frequently depict fathers as incompetent parents. Accordingly, this study explored whether first-time expectant parents’ beliefs about gendered family roles and the importance of fathers to child development were related to their TV use. Participants were 201 individuals (122 women, 79 men) from across the United States expecting their first biological child in a cohabiting heterosexual relationship. Participants completed an online survey assessing weekly TV exposure, exposure to TV programs featuring fathers, perceived realism of TV, use of TV to learn about the world, and beliefs …

Recent studies have shown that intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) is prevalent in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), based on DNA sequencing and chromosome aberration analysis of multiple regions from the same tumor. VHL mutations were found to be universal throughout individual tumors when it occurred (ubiquitous), while the mutations in other tumor suppressor genes tended to be detected only in parts of the tumors (subclonal). ITH has been studied mostly by DNA sequencing in limited numbers of samples, either by whole genome sequencing or by targeted sequencing. It is not known whether immunohistochemistry (IHC) can be used as a tool …

Linking Genotoxicity And Cytotoxicity With Membrane Fluidity: A Comparative Study In Ovarian Cancer Cell Lines Following Exposure To Auranofin, Deepu Oommen, Nicholas J.F. Dodd, Dennis Yiannakis, Rana Moyeed, Awadhesh N. Jha
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Auranofin, an organogold compound classified as an anti-rheumatic agent is under phase 2 clinical trials for re-purposing to treat recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer. We have reported earlier that Breast cancer 1, early onset (BRCA1) mutant ovarian cancer cells exhibit increased sensitivity to auranofin. BRCA1 is a DNA repair protein whose functional status is critical in the prognosis of ovarian cancer. Apart from DNA repair capability of cancer cells, membrane fluidity is also implicated in modulating resistance to chemotherapeutics. We report here that membrane fluidity influences the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR5 and IGROV1, to auranofin. Electron spin resonance …

Global Explorers Journaling And Reflection Initiative, John Bennion, Mat Duerden, Anne Whitehouse
Journal of Youth Development
Research suggests that journaling will increase reflection and improve program outcomes (Bain, et al, 1999; Duerden, et al, 2012) This study involved a partnership with a non-profit, Global Explorers (GEx), which provides international immersion experiences for youth. Their programs are designed to teach youth participants principles of leadership, environmental awareness, service, and science. This study, which tested whether teaching journaling techniques to youth program facilitators would have a positive impact on participant outcomes, addressed the following hypotheses: 1) Greater training in reflective thinking among participants would be associated with higher outcome scores, and 2) Participants in the intervention group (facilitators …
Rabbit Control: Bait Stations, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Rabbit Control: Bait Stations, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Biosecurity factsheets
This factsheet provides information on using bait stations for rabbit control.
Biological control agents such as the myxoma virus (myxomatosis), and rabbit haemorraghic disease virus (RHDV) or rabbit calicivirus disease, will not provide ‘magic bullets’ for reducing the impact of rabbits on agricultural production and the environment. Biological agents are more effective when they form part of an integrated approach to rabbit control. An integrated approach should use all available control options, including biological control, the use of vertebrate pesticides, shooting, and trapping programs. Control programs are most effective when they include the greatest number of properties possible (that is, …
The Strategic Global Climate And The Construction Of The Strategic Global Climate Scale, Leah Rose Wolfeld

Evaluating Impacts Using A Baci Design, Ratios, And A Bayesian Approach With A Focus On Restoration, Mary M. Conner, W. Carl Saunders, Nicolaas Bouwes, Chris Jordan
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Before-after-control-impact (BACI) designs are an effective method to evaluate natural and human-induced perturbations on ecological variables when treatment sites cannot be randomly chosen. While effect sizes of interest can be tested with frequentist methods, using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling methods, probabilities of effect sizes, such as a ≥20 % increase in density after restoration, can be directly estimated. Although BACI and Bayesian methods are used widely for assessing natural and human-induced impacts for field experiments, the application of hierarchal Bayesian modeling with MCMC sampling to BACI designs is less common. Here, we combine these approaches and extend …
Developing Capabilities: A Feminist Discourse Ethics Approach, Chad Kleist
Developing Capabilities: A Feminist Discourse Ethics Approach, Chad Kleist
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation attempts to preserve the central tenets of a global moral theory called “the capabilities approach” as defended by Martha Nussbaum, but to do so in a way that better realizes its own goals of identifying gender injustices and gaining cross-cultural support by providing an alternative defense of it. Capabilities assess an individual’s well-being based on what she is able to do (actions) and who she is able to be (states of existence). Nussbaum grounds her theory in the intuitive idea that each and every person is worthy of equal respect and dignity. The problem with grounding a theory …
Understanding Women's Experiences With Women-Only Leadership Development Programs In Higher Education: A Mixed Methods Approach, Danielle Marie Geary
Understanding Women's Experiences With Women-Only Leadership Development Programs In Higher Education: A Mixed Methods Approach, Danielle Marie Geary
Dissertations (1934 -)
Previous research indicated that women’s advancement into the leadership and administrative ranks in higher education has stalled over the past twenty years. Studies highlighted the socio-cultural and structural barriers that create challenges for women’s advancement in the academy. This study focused on the use of women-only leadership development programs (WLDPs) as a potential resource for women in the pursuit of advancing their careers. Few research studies to date assess the outcome for women who have attended WLDPs. This study was an in-depth case study of the Women in Higher Education Leadership Summit (WHELS) held at the University of San Diego, …
Characterization Of The Rcf1 Q-X3-R-X-R-X3-Q Motif And Its Role In Supporting Oxidative Phosphorylation Enzyme Complexes, Joshua Garlich
Characterization Of The Rcf1 Q-X3-R-X-R-X3-Q Motif And Its Role In Supporting Oxidative Phosphorylation Enzyme Complexes, Joshua Garlich
Dissertations (1934 -)
Mitochondrial respiratory complexes are critical components of cellular energy production that require tight regulation to ensure optimal function. Rcf1 and Rcf2 are mitochondrial proteins that can physically associate with the yeast respiratory complexes III and IV, and the higher-ordered III-IV respiratory supercomplex that also contains the ADP/ATP translocase, AAC. Rcf1 can physically associate with both complex III and IV independently, and can be chemically crosslinked to AAC, indicating a close physical proximity to a predominant regulator of energy flux within the cell. It was therefore hypothesized that Rcf1, through its physical association with complexes III and IV, and its close …
An Investigation Of The Requirements For Excimer Formation And Charge Stabilization In Model Pi-Stacked Assemblies, Brandon Uhler
An Investigation Of The Requirements For Excimer Formation And Charge Stabilization In Model Pi-Stacked Assemblies, Brandon Uhler
Dissertations (1934 -)
Formation of -stacked excimers plays an important role in many systems, ranging from biological phenomena and polymer formation and function to photovoltaic devices and organic molecular electronics. In these systems, the geometrical reorganization of the ground state upon photoexcitation is still a subject of debate. In this work, we compare the dynamics of excimer formation and hole (charge) stabilization in fluorene and fluorene-based model systems. We use a variety of gas-phase methods to examine the spectroscopy and dynamics of these systems, including Two-Color Resonant Two-Photon Ionization (2CR2PI), Hole-Burning (HB), Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF), and Dispersed Fluorescence (DF). In order to …
Depletion Of The Rna Helicase Skiv2l2 Impedes Mitotic Progression And Histone Mrna Turnover In Murine Cell Lines, Alexis Marie Onderak
Depletion Of The Rna Helicase Skiv2l2 Impedes Mitotic Progression And Histone Mrna Turnover In Murine Cell Lines, Alexis Marie Onderak
Dissertations (1934 -)
RNA surveillance via the nuclear exosome requires cofactors such as the helicase SKIV2L2 to process and degrade certain noncoding RNAs. This dissertation aimed to characterize the phenotype associated with RNAi knockdown of SKIV2L2 in two murine cancer cell lines: Neuro2A and P19. Skiv2l2 knockdown in Neuro2A and P19 cells induced changes in gene expression indicative of cell differentiation and reduced cellular proliferation. Analysis of the cell cycle revealed defective progression through mitosis following SKIV2L2 depletion. These results indicate that SKIV2L2 enhances mitotic progression, thereby maintaining cancer cell proliferation and preventing differentiation. Indeed, SKIV2L2 levels were found to be downregulated during …

Long-Term Antibiotic Exposure In Soil Is Associated With Changes In Microbial Community Structure And Prevalence Of Class 1 Integrons, Dw Cleary, Ah Bishop, L Zhang, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most significant challenges facing the global medical community and can be attributed to the use and misuse of antibiotics. This includes use as growth promoters or for prophylaxis and treatment of bacterial infection in intensively farmed livestock from where antibiotics can enter the environment as residues in manure. We characterised the impact of the long-term application of a mixture of veterinary antibiotics alone (tylosin, sulfamethazine and chlortetracycline) on class 1 integron prevalence and soil microbiota composition. Class 1 integron prevalence increased significantly (P < 0.005) from 0.006% in control samples to 0.064% in the treated plots. Soil microbiota was analysed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and revealed significant alterations in composition. Of the 19 significantly different (P < 0.05) OTUs identified, 16 were of the Class Proteobacteria and these decreased in abundance relative to the control plots. Only one OTU, of the Class Cyanobacteria, was shown to increase in abundance significantly; a curiosity given the established sensitivity of this class to antibiotics. We hypothesise that the overrepresentation of Proteobacteria as OTUs that decreased significantly in relative abundance, coupled with the observations of an increase in integron prevalence, may represent a strong selective pressure on these taxa.

An Approach-Avoidance Framework Of Workplace Aggression, D. Lance Ferris, Ming Yan, Vivien K. G. Lim, Yuanyi Chen, Shereen Fatimah
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The number of constructs developed to assess workplace aggression has flourished in recent years, leading to confusion over what meaningful differences exist (if any) between the constructs. We argue that one way to frame the field of workplace aggression is via approach–avoidance principles, with various workplace aggression constructs(e.g., abusive supervision, supervisor undermining, and workplace ostracism) differentially predicting specific approach or avoidance emotions and behaviors. Using two multi-wave field samples of employees, we demonstrate the utility of approach–avoidance principles in conceptualizing workplace aggression constructs, as well as the processes and boundary conditions through which they uniquely influence outcomes. Implications for the …
