Aspects Of The Reproductive Ecology Of Female Turtles In New Mexico, Jeffrey E. Lovich, Mickey Agha, Charles W. Painter, Levi Cole, Austin Fitzgerald, Kevin Narum, Randy D. Jennings

Western North American Naturalist

Data on reproductive ecology of turtles in New Mexico are limited, and some species living there are among the least studied in the United States. We trapped 4 native species of turtles (Apalone spinifera, Chrysemys picta, Pseudemys gorzugi, and Trachemys gaigeae gaigeae) in the Rio Grande and Black River (Pecos River drainage) of New Mexico in June 2012 and 2013 to collect data on female reproductive ecology, including clutch size, egg size, timing of egg production, and percentage of gravid females. During our sampling, we found shelled eggs via X-radiography in only 3 native species: C. picta, P. …

ISER Articles

This qualitative study conducted by a community-research partnership used multiple types of data collection to examine variables relevant for LGBTQ older adults who wished to age in place in their urban Denver neighborhood. Focus groups, interviews, and a town hall meeting were used to identify barriers and supports to aging in place. Participants (N=73) primarily identified as lesbian or gay, aged 50–69, and lived with a partner. Ageism, heterosexism, and/or cisgenderism emerged as cross-cutting themes that negatively impact access to healthcare, housing, social support, home assistance and legal services. Resilience from weathering a lifetime of discrimination was identified as a …

Panel: Brown University Redux - Effects Of Unionization On Graduate Student Employees: Faculty-Student Relations, Academic Freedom, And Pay, Sean Rogers, Adrienne Eaton, Paula Voos

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

In cases involving unionization of graduate student research and teaching assistants at private U.S. universities,

the National Labor Relations Board has, at times, denied collective bargaining rights on the presumption that

unionization would harm faculty--student relations and academic freedom. Using survey data collected from

PhD students in five academic disciplines across eight public U.S. universities, the authors compare

represented and non-represented graduate student employees in terms of faculty--student relations, academic

freedom, and pay. Unionization does not have the presumed negative effect on student outcomes, and in some

cases has a positive effect. Union-represented graduate student employees report higher levels of …

Using Self-Determination Theory To Improve College Access Among Minority Student Populations, Tyler Smith Oct 2016

Using Self-Determination Theory To Improve College Access Among Minority Student Populations, Tyler Smith

SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement

College aspirations among high school students have increased substantially in recent years, but minority students are only making up a small portion of the total college population. Resulting from the disparities seen in enrollment among the minority populations, many college preparation programs have developed. These programs seek to motivate students to attend college through increasing competence, by developing feelings of community among other methods. Self-determination theory states that to inhibit motivation, three psychological needs are to be met: competence, connectedness and autonomy (Ryan & Deci, 2000a). Based upon this theory, it was believed that its application would increase the effectiveness …

Shadow Puppet Plays In Elementary Science Methods Class Help Preservice Teachers Learn About Minority Scientists, Phyllis Gray, Audrey C. Rule, Anneliese Gentzsch, Denise Tallakson

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

This practical article describes an arts-integrated project with engineering design and science concepts from the Next Generation Science Standards, art principles from the National Arts Standards, as well as ideas under the theme of “Culture” from the National Council for the Social Studies Standards. Preservice teachers in an undergraduate science methods class researched the background, life, and accomplishments of a minority scientist by reading books and articles about the person. They created a script to present the experiences and contributions of the scientist to other preservice teachers and, eventually, elementary students. Shadow puppets were constructed out of cardboard to portray …

Single-Family Zoning, Intimate Association, And The Right To Choose Household Companions, Rigel C. Oliveri Oct 2016

Single-Family Zoning, Intimate Association, And The Right To Choose Household Companions, Rigel C. Oliveri

Florida Law Review

Many local governments use single-family zoning ordinances to restrict occupancy in residential areas to households whose members are all related to one another by blood, marriage, or adoption. The Supreme Court upheld such ordinances in the 1974 case of Belle Terre v. Boraas, and they have been used to prevent all sorts of groups from living together—from unmarried couples who are raising children to college students. This Article contends that Belle Terre is wholly incompatible with the Court's modern jurisprudence on privacy and the right of intimate association. The case appears to have survived this long because of a …

Recent Approaches In Designing Bioadhesive Materials Inspired By Mussel Adhesive Protein, Pegah Kord Forooshani, Bruce P. Lee

Department of Biomedical Engineering Publications

Marine mussels secret protein-based adhesives, which enable them to anchor to various surfaces in a saline, intertidal zone. Mussel foot proteins (Mfps) contain a large abundance of a unique, catecholic amino acid, Dopa, in their protein sequences. Catechol offers robust and durable adhe-sion to various substrate surfaces and contributes to the curing of the adhesive plaques. In this article, we review the unique features and the key functionalities of Mfps, catechol chemistry, and strategies for preparing catechol-functionalized poly- mers. Specifically, we reviewed recent findings on the contributions of various features of Mfps on interfacial binding, which include coacervate formation, surface …

Noncanonical Sqstm1/P62-Nrf2 Pathway Activation Mediates Proteasome Inhibitor Resistance In Multiple Myeloma Cells Via Redox, Metabolic And Translational Reprogramming., Irene Riz, Teresa S Hawley, Jeffrey W Marsal, Robert G Hawley

Anatomy and Regenerative Biology Faculty Publications

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a B-cell malignancy characterized by the accumulation of clonal plasma cells in the bone marrow, with drug resistance being a major cause of therapeutic failure. We established a carfilzomib-resistant derivative of the LP-1 MM cell line (LP-1/Cfz) and found that the transcription factor NF-E2 p45-related factor 2 (Nrf2; gene symbol NFE2L2) contributes to carfilzomib resistance. The mechanism of Nrf2 activation involved enhanced translation of Nrf2 as well as its positive regulator, the autophagy receptor sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1)/p62. The eukaryotic translation initiation factor gene EIF4E3 was among the Nrf2 target genes upregulated in LP-1/Cfz cells, suggesting existence …

How Did Zika Virus Emerge In The Pacific Islands And Latin America?, John Pettersson, Stephen J. Seligman, Didier Musso, Antoine Nougairède, Remi Charrel, Xavier De Lamballerie

NYMC Faculty Publications

The unexpected emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in the Pacific Islands and Latin America and its association with congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZVS) (which includes microcephaly) and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) have stimulated wide-ranging research. High densities of susceptible Aedes spp., immunologically naive human populations, global population growth with increased urbanization, and escalation of global transportation of humans and commercial goods carrying vectors and ZIKV undoubtedly enhanced the emergence of ZIKV. However, flavivirus mutations accumulate with time, increasing the likelihood that genetic viral differences are determinants of change in viral phenotype. Based on comparative ZIKV complete genome phylogenetic analyses and temporal …

Co-Operative Collective Motion Of Benzoquinone Particles At The Air-Water Interface And Assessment Of Cd62l As A Protein Biomarker For Metastatic Bladder Cancer, Jennifer E. Satterwhite 4469944 Oct 2016

Co-Operative Collective Motion Of Benzoquinone Particles At The Air-Water Interface And Assessment Of Cd62l As A Protein Biomarker For Metastatic Bladder Cancer, Jennifer E. Satterwhite 4469944

Doctoral Dissertations

Active matter is an entity observed in both animate and inanimate systems and exhibits spontaneous movement. An internal mechanism generates the self-driven unit to convert potential energy into mechanical movement. Biomotors and organisms are biologically well-known active systems; however, their movements are quite a complex phenomenon and understanding their driving motive forces and thermodynamic principles are essential. Therefore, the first portion of this thesis focused on the dynamics of an active multiple particle system at the air-water interface.

Benzoquinone active particles were studied and remarkable locomotion phenomena were observed at the air-water interface. Self-motion was evaluated with multiple symmetric circular …

Forgetting And The Value Of Social Information, Benjamin James Abts Oct 2016

Forgetting And The Value Of Social Information, Benjamin James Abts

Theses

Information is everywhere in nature, however it can be deceitful or incorrect, so not all information should be used. Foraging pollinators utilize variable and ephemeral resources so learning about patch quality and nectar replenishment rates are essential to success and survival. However, remembering information after it is no longer relevant is not advantageous. It has been theorized that a pollinator’s memory should reflect their environment. Bumblebees are known to use both personal information (information gathered through trial and error) and social information (information gained through observations of or interactions with other animals or their products) in foraging decisions; however, it …

Mitochondrial Superoxide Signaling Contributes To Norepinephrine-Mediated T-Lymphocyte Cytokine Profiles., Adam J. Case, Colton T. Roessner, Jun Tian, Matthew C. Zimmerman

Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

Norepinephrine (NE) produces multifaceted regulatory patterns in T-lymphocytes. Recently, we have shown that NE utilizes redox signaling as evidenced by increased superoxide (O2●-) causally linked to the observed changes in these cells; however, the source of this reactive oxygen species (ROS) remains elusive. Herein, we hypothesized that the source of increased O2●- in NE-stimulated T-lymphocytes is due to disruption of mitochondrial bioenergetics. To address this hypothesis, we utilized purified mouse splenic CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocytes stimulated with NE and assessed O2●- levels, mitochondrial metabolism, cellular proliferation, and cytokine profiles. We demonstrate that the increase in O2●- levels in response to …

© 2016 American Chemical Society. The photocleaving dynamics of colloidal microRNA-functionalized nanoparticles are studied using time-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. Model drug-delivery systems composed of oligonucleotides attached to either silver nanoparticles or polystyrene nanoparticles using a nitrobenzyl photocleavable linker are prepared and characterized. The photoactivated controlled release is observed to be most efficient on resonance at 365 nm irradiation, with pseudo-first-order rate constants that are linearly proportional to irradiation powers. Additionally, silver nanoparticles show a 6-fold plasmon enhancement in photocleaving efficiency over corresponding polystyrene nanoparticle rates, while our previous measurements on gold nanoparticles show a 2-fold plasmon enhancement compared …
