Addressing Socio-Economic Challenges To Curb Youth Participation In Terrorism In Africa, Tendaishe Tlou
Addressing Socio-Economic Challenges To Curb Youth Participation In Terrorism In Africa, Tendaishe Tlou
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
The scourge of terrorism has become an international crisis after the 9/11 attacks in America. Terrorism has deeply encroached its claws in Africa on the premise of socio-economic challenges along the clash of civilizations. In countries such as Nigeria, Somalia, Central African Republic, Kenya and the Maghreb region, terrorism is a threat to peace and security, compounded by spiraling youth unemployment rates, the youth bulge, porous borders, poverty, arms proliferation, weak governments, economic problems among other challenges. It is yet to be seen how Africans will unite to deal with this threat to security on the continent given the above …

Processes Of Multibathyal Aragonite Undersaturation In The Arctic Ocean, Jonathan G. Wynn, Lisa Robbins, L. G. Anderson
Processes Of Multibathyal Aragonite Undersaturation In The Arctic Ocean, Jonathan G. Wynn, Lisa Robbins, L. G. Anderson
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
During 3 years of study (2010–2012), the western Arctic Ocean was found to have unique aragonite saturation profiles with up to three distinct aragonite undersaturation zones. This complexity is produced as inflow of Atlantic‐derived and Pacific‐derived water masses mix with Arctic‐derived waters, which are further modified by physiochemical and biological processes. The shallowest aragonite undersaturation zone, from the surface to ∼30 m depth is characterized by relatively low alkalinity and other dissolved ions. Besides local influence of biological processes on aragonite undersaturation of shallow coastal waters, the nature of this zone is consistent with dilution by sea‐ice melt and invasion …

Exposure Of Fibrinogen And Thrombin To Nitric Oxide Donor Prolinonoate Affects Fibrin Clot Properties, Christine C. Helms, Shannon Kapadia, Anne C. Gilmore, Zhexi Lu, Swati Basu, Daniel B. Kim-Shapiro

Fibrin fibers form the structural backbone of blood clots. The structural properties of fibrin clots are highly dependent on formation kinetics. Environmental factors such as protein concentration, pH, salt, and protein modification, to name a few, can affect fiber kinetics through altered fibrinopeptide release, monomer association, and/or lateral aggregation. The objective of our study was to determine the effect of thrombin and fibrinogen exposed to nitric oxide on fibrin clot properties. ProliNONOate (5 [mu]mol/l) was added to fibrinogen and thrombin before clot initiation and immediately following the addition of thrombin to the fibrinogen solution. Resulting fibrin fibers were probed with …

The Increased Expression Of Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 9 In Prostate Cancer And Its Prognostic Significance, Ms Al Fayi, X Gou, Ss Forootan, W Al-Jameel, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
In contrast to numerous studies conducted to investigate the crucial role of fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) in prostate cancer, investigations on the possible involvement of other FABPs are rare. Here we first measured the mRNA levels of 10 FABPs in benign and malignant prostate cell lines and identified the differentially expressed FABP6 and FABP9 mRNAs whose levels in all malignant cell lines were higher than those in the benign cells. Thereafter we assessed the expression status of FABP6 and FABP9 in both prostate cell lines and in human tissues. FABP6 protein was overexpressed only in 1 of the …
Reproductive Schedule Of The Silver Shiner (Notropis Photogenis) In The Flint River Of Alabama, Kelly Hodgskins, Stephanie Greenleaf, Jonathan Hillman, Bruce Stallsmith
Reproductive Schedule Of The Silver Shiner (Notropis Photogenis) In The Flint River Of Alabama, Kelly Hodgskins, Stephanie Greenleaf, Jonathan Hillman, Bruce Stallsmith
Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
Many river-dwelling species of fish are dependent upon and stimulated by fluctuations in river flow for successful reproduction. This is especially true of pelagophils, a reproductive guild whose eggs and larvae require free drifting on river currents for several days. Notropis photogenis (Silver Shiner) is a rheophilic species with a broad distribution from Ontario to the southeastern United States including northern tributaries to the Tennessee River in Alabama. Little is known of its reproductive biology. The purpose of this study was to describe aspects of reproductive biology such as timing and pattern of ovarian development and oocyte maturation of N. …

Clemson Wow Project: Successes Of A Water Quality Outreach Program, Lauren Garcia Chance, Erica Linard, Christie Sampson
S.C. Water Resources Conference
The What’s in Our Waters (WOW) program was designed by graduate students from the Biology and Environmental Toxicology programs at Clemson University (CU) in June 2013. WOW has established a successfully running model with the AP Environmental Science class of a local high school in Central, SC.. The programs’ success and the collected data are useful for both educators working to evolve environmental education and as well as researchers working to increase interest in citizen science. The structure of this program brings attention to South Carolina’s water resources and alters students’ perceptions of science and scientists.

Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) is a crucial component in aquatic systems for the natural remediation of metals pollution. Natural organic compounds from DOM provide macromolecules which strongly attract cations such as copper, lead, zinc, and mercury. Binding with organic molecules reduces toxicity and bioavailability for metals uptake in aquatic organisms. We investigated the use of a commercially-available organic product, Borregro HA-1, to aid in metals remediation in an aquatic environment

Purification Of 26s Proteasomes And Their Subcomplexes From Plants, Richard S. Marshall, David C. Gemperline, Richard D. Vierstra
Biology Faculty Research
The 26S proteasome is a highly dynamic, multisubunit, ATP-dependent protease that plays a central role in cellular housekeeping and many aspects of plant growth and development by degrading aberrant polypeptides and key cellular regulators that are first modified by ubiquitin. Although the 26S proteasome was originally enriched from plants over 30 years ago, only recently have significant advances been made in our ability to isolate and study the plant particle. Here, we describe two robust methods for purifying the 26S proteasome and its subcomplexes from Arabidopsis thaliana; one that involves conventional chromatography techniques to isolate the complex from wild-type …
