Pristine coastal environments are the key to Hawaii’s worldwide fame and attraction to tourists, yet their economic value remains understudied. This article examines preferences for characteristics associated with beach recreation in Oahu, Hawaii, among residents and tourists. Consideration is given to sand quality, water quality, congestion levels, and swimming safety conditions in the context of a choice experiment. The choice experiment conveys attribute levels almost entirely through pictures, and results suggest that this novel portrayal is well understood by respondents. Excessive congestion and water quality are regarded as the most important beach attributes, specifically the avoidance of poor water quality …

Thecla Penetrates The Popular Perception, Leah Jo M. Shelton Jan 2016

Thecla Penetrates The Popular Perception, Leah Jo M. Shelton

Audre Lorde Prize

This paper analyzes The Acts of Paul and Thecla, an early Christian writing, within the framework of gender in antique Rome. Roman gender was based on performance, which is the basis of each character's gender construction in this story. Thecla undergoes a radical transformation from a passive female, preparing to be wed, to an active, ideal male who controls her independence and performs public oratory. In contrast, Paul, who appears as an ideal male at the beginning of the story, is "unmanned" by Thecla when she ultimately defies her female categorization. The Acts of Paul and Thecla exhibits the …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

In the year 2015, it is estimated that the number of new cases of invasive melanoma will be 42,670 in males and 31,200 in females.1 Melanoma is treatable with early diagnosis; however, more advanced disease has devastating outcomes. For the past decade, two chemotherapy agents, dacarbazine and temozolomide, have been the treatment of choice for advanced stage III or IV melanoma requiring systemic treatment. Interleukin-2 (IL-2) therapy has been used but with serious side effects. More recently, the focus has shifted to monoclonal antibodies and enzyme inhibitors as the main systemic treatment for advanced cutaneous melanoma. This literature review …

Ocean Iron Fertilization And Indigenous Peoples' Right To Food: Leveraging International And Domestic Law Protections To Enhance Access To Salmon In The Pacific Northwest, Randall S. Abate Jan 2016

Ocean Iron Fertilization And Indigenous Peoples' Right To Food: Leveraging International And Domestic Law Protections To Enhance Access To Salmon In The Pacific Northwest, Randall S. Abate

Journal Publications

Ocean iron fertilization (OIF) is a new and controversial climate change mitigation strategy that seeks to increase the carbon-absorbing capacity of ocean waters by depositing significant quantities of iron dust into the marine environment to stimulate the growth of phytoplankton blooms. The photosynthetic processes of these blooms absorb carbon from the atmosphere and sequester it to the ocean floor. OIF has been criticized on several grounds. including the foreseeable and unforeseeable adverse consequences it may cause to the marine environment, as well as the daunting challenge of reconciling several potentially overlapping sources of international and domestic environmental law, which may …

A Clash Of Fictions: Geopolitics In Recent Russian And Ukrainian Literature, Yvonne Howell Jan 2016

A Clash Of Fictions: Geopolitics In Recent Russian And Ukrainian Literature, Yvonne Howell

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

When the vast, multinational Soviet empire collapsed in 1991, the geopolitical structure it had struggled to maintain for most of the 20111 century - often by means of brutal repression and forced remobilization of entire populations - proved itself in the eyes of many to be fatally out of sync with the epochal norm of the nation-state. By the end of the 18th century, people in many parts of the world had begun to "imagine themselves" as nations and to organize politically into states whose primary function would be to protect, nurture, and (in a kind of Romantic feedback loop) …

Listening To Afro-Latinidad: The Sonic Archive Of Olú Clemente, Patricia Herrera

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications

For many Puerto Ricans and other Latinos, Roberto Clemente was more than just a baseball star. Above all, he was a symbol of hope and humanitarianism, succeeding despite the overt racial discrimination he encountered as a Black Puerto Rican. Off the field, Clemente was renowned and beloved for his involvement in charity work in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. His final humanitarian act came about in 1972 on New Year’s Eve when the plane chartered to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed into the ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. His sudden and …

The areal expansion rates of the migration are very consistent from day to day. There was also two roosting locations on a daily basis heading in multiple directions that was observed. Future studies for local bird migration consist of surveying types of birds to better understand the take-off times in such magnitudes for …

Modulation Of Chlorophyll Concentration By The Indian Ocean Dipole, Shelby Stansell Jan 2016

Modulation Of Chlorophyll Concentration By The Indian Ocean Dipole, Shelby Stansell

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Student Publications

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a climate mode that causes changes in the Indian Ocean sea surface temperature and precipitation. The IOD affects precipitation in far reaching areas such as Africa and Japan. It also impacts ocean biology such as chlorophyll concentration particularly in the Indian Ocean, and these changes are measureable. Using SeaWIFS chlorophyll data along with sea surface temperature anomalies, changes in chlorophyll concentration during IOD events can be seen and are measured to be statistically significant from non-IOD events. IOD events can change chlorophyll concentration so greatly that algal blooms can occur and conversely IODs can …

Continuous Time Multi-State Models For Interval Censored Data, Lijie Wan Jan 2016

Continuous Time Multi-State Models For Interval Censored Data, Lijie Wan

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Continuous-time multi-state models are widely used in modeling longitudinal data of disease processes with multiple transient states, yet the analysis is complex when subjects are observed periodically, resulting in interval censored data. Recently, most studies focused on modeling the true disease progression as a discrete time stationary Markov chain, and only a few studies have been carried out regarding non-homogenous multi-state models in the presence of interval-censored data. In this dissertation, several likelihood-based methodologies were proposed to deal with interval censored data in multi-state models.

Firstly, a continuous time version of a homogenous Markov multi-state model with backward transitions was …

Antagonistic Interactions Between Aquatic Turtles And Territorial Sunfish, Tara Jane Snyder Jan 2016

Antagonistic Interactions Between Aquatic Turtles And Territorial Sunfish, Tara Jane Snyder

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

When sunfish (Lepomis spp.) breed, parents defend nest sites and are highly aggressive and territorial against conspecifics and other fish and invertebrate species. However, little is known of their possible effects on sympatric turtle species. In this study I examined the relationship between the musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus), painted turtle (Chrysemys picta), pumpkinseed sunfish (.Lepomis gibbosus), and bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) within Lake Wapalanne, Sandyston, New Jersey. My hypotheses were: presence of musk and painted turtle individuals would diminish within the sunfish nest habitats during the breeding period and would revert back to normal numbers of captures post-sunfish breeding; musk …

Opa Or Nopa? Restoring Cooperative Federalism In Oil Pollution Enforcement, Jennifer Lamb Jan 2016

Opa Or Nopa? Restoring Cooperative Federalism In Oil Pollution Enforcement, Jennifer Lamb

Emory Law Journal

Catastrophic oil spills are some of the most visible and devastating contemporary environmental disasters. Unfortunately, a loophole in the Clean Water Act has significant potential to limit the United States¿s ability to prosecute those who spill oil. This Comment argues that the application of statutory preclusion to Oil Pollution Act cases is contrary to the original intent of the Congress in drafting the statutory preclusion provision of the Clean Water Act and subsequent Oil Pollution Act amendments. Further, applying statutory preclusion to oil pollution cases undermines effective enforcement. This Comment proposes that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should take a …

Preparation Of A Transferrin-Targeted M13-Based Gene Nanocarrier And Evaluation Of Its Efficacy For Gene Delivery And Expression In Eukaryote Cells, Mohammad Khalajkondori, Mahboobeh Kavoosi, Mohammad Rahmati-Yamchi, Mehdi Kadivar Jan 2016

Preparation Of A Transferrin-Targeted M13-Based Gene Nanocarrier And Evaluation Of Its Efficacy For Gene Delivery And Expression In Eukaryote Cells, Mohammad Khalajkondori, Mahboobeh Kavoosi, Mohammad Rahmati-Yamchi, Mehdi Kadivar

Turkish Journal of Biology

Bacteriophages are appropriate gene carriers that might be targeted toward target cells using different strategies. Here we prepared a transferrin-targeted M13-based gene nanocarrier (Tf-targeted M13-GFP) and examined its gene delivery and expression efficacy in the AGS cell line. M13 phagemid particles bearing a GFP expression cassette (M13-GFP) were obtained from a recombinant lambda phage through an in vivo excision procedure. Chemical coupling of human holotransferrin molecules (Tf) to the surface of these phagemid particles resulted in Tf-targeted M13-GFP formation, which was then characterized by Phage-ELISA and Cell-ELISA experiments. Immunocytochemistry (ICC) and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis were used for internalization …

Evaluation Of Genotoxic And Cytologic Effects Of Environmental Stressin Wheat Species With Different Ploidy Levels, Sefa Pekol, Mehmet Cengi̇z Baloğlu, Yasemi̇n Çeli̇k Altunoğlu Jan 2016

Evaluation Of Genotoxic And Cytologic Effects Of Environmental Stressin Wheat Species With Different Ploidy Levels, Sefa Pekol, Mehmet Cengi̇z Baloğlu, Yasemi̇n Çeli̇k Altunoğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Drought and salinity induce biochemical, physiological, morphological, and genetic responses in plants. To understand the damage to different wheat species caused by these stresses, we investigated root-shoot growth, cell division, chromosomal aberrations, and nucleolus organizer regions (AgNORs) in root tip cells. Inhibition of root and shoot growth were observed in diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid wheat genotypes after salt and drought stresses. Both stresses had adverse effects on dividing cells in root tips of all wheat species and caused a decrease in mitotic index values. Salt and drought lead to the induction of chromosome aberrations and repression of interphase AgNOR parameters. …

Comparative And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Zinc Transporter Genes/Proteins In Plants, Recep Vatansever, İbrahi̇m İlker Özyi̇ği̇t, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z

Turkish Journal of Biology

Zinc is an important catalytic element for more than 300 enzymes and plays a structural role in the stabilization of many proteins. Protein domain analysis showed that identified Zn transporter proteins belong to the ZIP protein family (PF02535). Zn transporter sequences were found to have similar molecular weights (33.1-51.4 kDa) and amino acid lengths (306-478 amino acids) with 5.31-8.92 pI values. Subcellular localization of Zn transporters was predicted as the plasma membrane. They had 6-9 putative transmembrane domains with a variable region between TM-3 and TM-4, which could contain a potential histidine-rich metal-binding domain. Moreover, alignment analysis showed that the …

Flavonoid Dynamic Responses To Different Drought Conditions: Amount, Type, And Localization Of Flavonols In Roots And Shoots Of Arabidopsis Thaliana L., Behrokh Shojaie, Akbar Mostajeran, Mustafa Ghanadian

Turkish Journal of Biology

Flavonoids accumulate in plants in response to water deficit. Changes in amount, type, and localization of flavonoids under different drought conditions in Arabidopsis thaliana have not been well investigated. Therefore, in this study flavonoid patterns were investigated under water potentials of -0.2, -0.5, and -0.9 MPa at 0, 24, 48, 120, and 192 h after drought induction. Determination of amount and type of flavonoids was performed by HPLC and spectroscopy. In addition, localization of flavonoids was detected by DPBA staining and a fluorescent microscope. Only quercetin and kaempferol were detected in hydrolyzed extracts of roots and shoots. The maximum amounts …

Modeling Of Prnd Protein From Pseudomonas Fluorescens Rajnb11 And Its Comparative Structural Analysis With Prnd Proteins Expressed In Burkholderia And Serratia, Ram Nageena Singh, Raghvendra Pratap Singh, Anjana Sharma, Anil Kumar Saxena Jan 2016

Modeling Of Prnd Protein From Pseudomonas Fluorescens Rajnb11 And Its Comparative Structural Analysis With Prnd Proteins Expressed In Burkholderia And Serratia, Ram Nageena Singh, Raghvendra Pratap Singh, Anjana Sharma, Anil Kumar Saxena

Turkish Journal of Biology

Pyrrolnitrin is produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens and plays an important role in control of pathogenic fungi. The prnABCD gene cluster codes for enzymes involved in biosynthesis of pyrrolnitrin. Among the four genes, prnD is very important as it codes for arylamine N-oxygenase, the only biochemically characterized oxygenase involved in oxidation of the amino group of aminopyrrolnitrin to a nitro group to form pyrrolnitrin. A strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens RajNB11 efficient for antifungal activity was found to produce pyrrolnitrin. The prnD gene product of P. fluorescens RajNB11 that catalyzes the final step of production of pyrrolnitrin was characterized in the present …
