Gender Classification: A Convolutional Neural Network Approach, Shan Sung Liew, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Rabia Bakhteri

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for real-time gender classification based on facial images. The proposed CNN architecture exhibits a much reduced design complexity when compared with other CNN solutions applied in pattern recognition. The number of processing layers in the CNN is reduced to only four by fusing the convolutional and subsampling layers. Unlike in conventional CNNs, we replace the convolution operation with cross-correlation, hence reducing the computational load. The network is trained using a second-order backpropagation learning algorithm with annealed global learning rates. Performance evaluation of the proposed CNN solution is conducted on two …

Grid-Connected Induction Generator Interturn Fault Analysis Using A Pca-Ann-Based Algorithm, Haydar Bayar, Ümi̇t Kemaletti̇n Terzi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

It is difficult for short circuits among the internal windings of one phase in electrical machines to be determined in a reliable and speedy manner. The failure currents that occur, especially in short circuits with a few windings, are at such low levels that they cannot be determined by relay systems. This results in growing faults and damage. In this study, we designed a model that can define winding failures successfully at very small levels by using the PCA and ANN algorithms. We tested the real-time faults and measured the system performance with the installed test rig. The developed protection …

Physics Teachers’ Views On Their Initial Teacher Education, Isaac Buabeng, Lindsey Conner, David Winter Jan 2016

Physics Teachers’ Views On Their Initial Teacher Education, Isaac Buabeng, Lindsey Conner, David Winter

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper explores New Zealand (NZ) physics teachers’ and physics educators’ views about Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Perspectives of physics teachers nationally indicated that in general, teachers considered themselves not well-prepared in some content areas including electronics, modern physics, and atomic and nuclear physics. This may be because in NZ, physics teachers have usually gained their content knowledge from an undergraduate science degree where they may have only taken one or two courses in physics. One year postgraduate teacher education programmes do not have sufficient time to cover the physics content taught in the final three years of schooling. The …

Innovation Heuristics: Experiments On Sequential Creativity In Intellectual Property, Stefan Bechtold, Christopher Buccafusco, Christopher Jon Sprigman Jan 2016

Innovation Heuristics: Experiments On Sequential Creativity In Intellectual Property, Stefan Bechtold, Christopher Buccafusco, Christopher Jon Sprigman

Articles

All creativity and innovation build on existing ideas. Authors and inventors copy, adapt, improve, interpret, and refine the ideas that have come before them. The central task of intellectual property (IP) law is regulating this sequential innovation to ensure that initial creators and subsequent creators receive the appropriate sets of incentives. Although many scholars have applied the tools of economic analysis to consider whether IP law is successful in encouraging cumulative innovation, that work has rested on a set of untested assumptions about creators’ behavior. This Article reports four novel creativity experiments that begin to test those assumptions. In particular, …

Speech Recognition Using Ann And Predator-Influenced Civilized Swarm Optimization Algorithm, Teena Mittal, Rajendra Kumar Sharma

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a hybrid optimization technique, predator-influenced civilized swarm optimization, by integrating civilized swarm optimization (CSO) and predator-prey optimization (PPO) techniques. CSO is the integration of the attributes of particle swarm optimization and a society civilization algorithm (SCA). In the SCA, the swarm is divided into a few societies, and each society has its own society leader (SL); other individuals of the society are termed society members. The combination of all such societies forms a civilization, and the best-performing SL becomes the civilization leader (CL). In CSO, SLs and members update their positions through the guidance of their own …

High-Order Uniformly Convergent Method For Nonlinear Singularly Perturbed Delay Differential Equations With Small Shifts, Abdelhay Salama, Dirhem Al-Amery

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we propose and analyze a high-order uniform method for solving boundary value problems (BVPs) for singularly perturbed nonlinear delay differential equations with small shifts (delay and advance). Such types of BVPs play an important role in the modeling of various real life phenomena, such as the variational problem in control theory and in the determination of the expected time for the generation of action potentials in nerve cells. To obtain parameter-uniform convergence, the present method is constructed on a piecewise-uniform Shishkin mesh. The error estimate is discussed and it is shown that the method is uniformly convergent …

On The Nphss-Kpik Iteration Method For Low-Rank Complex Sylvester Equations Arising From Time-Periodic Fractional Diffusion Equations, Min-Li Zeng, Guo-Feng Zhang

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Based on the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian (HS) splitting for non-Hermitian matrices, a nonalternating preconditioned Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting-Krylov plus inverted Krylov subspace (NPHSS-KPIK) iteration method for solving a class of large and low-rank complex Sylvester equations arising from the two-dimensional time-periodic fractional diffusion problem is established. The local convergence condition is proposed and the optimal parameter is given. Numerical experiments are used to show the efficiency of the NPHSS-KPIK iteration method for solving the Sylvester equations arising from the time-periodic fractional diffusion equations.

A Simple Hybrid Method For Segmenting Vessel Structures In Retinal Fundus Images, Cemal Köse

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a simple, fast, and efficient hybrid segmentation method is presented for extracting vessel structures in retinal fundus images. Basically, this hybrid approach combines circular and naive Bayes classifiers to extract blood vessels in retinal fundus images. The circular method samples pixels along the enlarging circles centered at the current pixel and classifies the current pixel as vessel or nonvessel. An elimination technique is then employed to eliminate the nonvessel fragments from the processed image. The naive Bayes method as a supervised technique uses a very small set of features to segment retinal vessels in retinal images. The …

Quadraticeigenparameter-Dependent Quantum Difference Equations, Yelda Aygar Küçükevci̇li̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The main aim of this paper is to construct quantum extension of the discrete Sturm--Liouville equation consisting of second-order difference equation and boundary conditions that depend on a quadratic eigenvalue parameter. We consider a boundary value problem (BVP) consisting of a second-order quantum difference equation and boundary conditions that depend on the quadratic eigenvalue parameter. We present a condition that guarantees that this BVP has a finite number of eigenvalues and spectral singularities with finite multiplicities.
