Subacute Effects Of Prallethrin On Behavior Of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) And Other Human Disease Vectors, Kyndall C. Dye
Subacute Effects Of Prallethrin On Behavior Of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) And Other Human Disease Vectors, Kyndall C. Dye
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
The synthetic pyrethroid, prallethrin, is an active ingredient in a widely marketed ultralow volume (ULV) mosquito adulticide. Volatilized prallethrin is intended to stimulate mosquito flight, increasing overall effectiveness of the adulticide. However, field tests using volatilized prallethrin did not produce significant differences in various vector trap catches, suggesting prallethrin’s behavioral effects are not viable. Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate prallethrin’s effect on flight behavior of adult female Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus). Mosquitoes were divided into three groups; a control, those exposed to volatilized prallethrin, and those exposed to a simulated ULV application at label rates. After …

Effects Of Landscape, Intraguild Interactions, And A Neonicotinoid On Natural Enemy And Pest Interactions In Soybeans, Hannah J. Penn
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Demand for food, fuel, and fiber has been increasing, escalating the intensification of agriculture during the past fifty years. A more comprehensive understanding of the impact of landscapes on sustainable agriculture production is required to meet the continual increase in human demand. This not only includes how chemical inputs are used but also how cultivated and surrounding landscapes are managed for ecosystem services. This research explains how land cover on landscape and farm scales impact ant and spider-mediated pest suppression. I successfully developed and optimized molecular methods to test ant gut contents from both laboratory and field-caught specimens. A multi-year …

Although the value of population, health, environment (PHE) programs is appreciated by the development community and the conceptual linkages they incorporate are sound, little evidence exists to demonstrate their short- and long-term impacts—particularly the role that the family planning (FP) component of PHE projects plays in building resilience, improving livelihoods, and helping people adapt to climate change. To contribute to filling this gap, the Evidence Project collaborated with Tuungane, a PHE project jointly implemented by The Nature Conservancy and Pathfinder International, to conduct further analysis of their existing data and examine the evidence base around integrated PHE programming, FP, climate …

Does One Size Fit All? A Case For Context-Driven Null Hypothesis Statistical Testing, Grayson L. Baird, Lisa L. Harlow
Psychology Faculty Publications
Rodgers (2010a) asserted that the practice of null hypothesis statistical testing (NHST) follows a mechanistic and rule-based epistemology. This concern is addressed using historical and modern sources as evidence for NHST as a dynamic, context-driven framework for empowering researchers in scientific inquiry.

Increasing numbers of adults, particularly college students, are misusing prescription stimulants primarily for cognitive/academic enhancement, so it is critical to explore whether empirical findings support neurocognitive benefits of prescription stimulants. Previous meta-analytic studies have supported small benefits from prescription stimulants for the cognitive domains of inhibitory control and memory; however, no meta-analytic studies have examined the effects on processing speed or the potential impairment on other domains of cognition, including planning, decision-making, and cognitive perseveration. Therefore, the present study conducted a meta-analysis of the available literature examining the effects of prescription stimulants on specific measures of processing speed, planning, decision-making, …

Background: Attempts to refine toothbrushing (TB) technique, an ingrained habit in adults, can meet with some challenges. Recently, the role of proactive interference as a barrier to improving the learning of proper brushing has been proposed. This pilot feasibility study was designed to investigate TB behavior and to see how it changes after training. Smartphone video “selfies” (SPVSs) are increasingly being used in the medical field to assess, monitor, and determine the progression of diseases.
Materials and Methods: We used SPVS to study TB skills in a small sample of volunteers. Over a period of 14 days, after …

Reactivity Of Hydroxyl Radical: Mechanistic Insight Into The Reactivity With Dissolved Organic Matter, Mallika Khare
Reactivity Of Hydroxyl Radical: Mechanistic Insight Into The Reactivity With Dissolved Organic Matter, Mallika Khare
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) that produce highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (HO•) are attractive and promising water and wastewater treatment technologies because HO• can destroy a variety of organic compounds. However, background dissolved organic matter (DOM) significantly reduces the performance of AOPs by scavenging HO•. The conventional experimental approach to identifying ‘average’ reactivity limits our mechanistic understanding of the reaction of HO• with complex mixture of surrogate DOM. This is the first study to use quantum mechanical methods to understand the elementary reactions of HO• with a model monomer of DOM. “Temple Northeastern Birmingham model” (TNB). The theoretically calculated aqueous-phase free …

Picking Up The Slackline: Can The United States And Japan Successfully Regulate Commercial Fishing Of Bluefin Tuna Following Failed Intergovernmental Attempts?, Sarah E. Bauer
Indiana Law Journal
Part I of this Note will address the reasons why intergovernmental organizations have failed to adequately regulate the commercial fishing of Bluefin tuna. Part II offers an analysis of the Bluefin markets in the United States and Japan and argues that these countries are ideal candidates for successful Bluefin regulation because of their market structures. Part III explores the likelihood that the two countries would implement such regulations, taking into account the respective governments’ histories of species-specific regulation.
A Small-Scale Water Budget Approach And Water Quality Assessment: A Case Study For Calderas Lake, Guatemala, Edrick Ramos
A Small-Scale Water Budget Approach And Water Quality Assessment: A Case Study For Calderas Lake, Guatemala, Edrick Ramos
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Increases in water demand and urban development in Calderas community over the past decade have led to questions about the hydrology, water quality, quantity and sustainable management of Calderas Lake micro-basin. However, studies on baseline hydrology are limited for rural communities located inside volcanic origin watersheds of Guatemala. The scope of this study was to characterize the hydrology and establish a method to: 1) quantify a water budget, and 2) qualify the water quality of a lacustrine system that supply water for about 17,000 inhabitants on the state limits or rural Guatemala City. Mean annual rainfall and temperature at the …
Evaluating The Anaerobic Codigestion Potential Of Stillage And Dairy Manure In A Tubular Digester, Brad J. Weiss
Evaluating The Anaerobic Codigestion Potential Of Stillage And Dairy Manure In A Tubular Digester, Brad J. Weiss
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Evaluations of the anaerobic treatment of sugarcane stillage and dairy manure in a low cost tubular digester were performed in small scale batch experiments and using mathematical simulations. A local sensitivity analysis of the model was performed, and key input parameters were adjusted until the predicted COD removal was consistent with data obtained using two full-scale digesters. Simulations were performed to evaluate COD removal and biogas production for nine different mixtures of stillage and manure at four different temperatures ranging from 15˚C to 30˚C. Digestion of stillage alone was not effective, but when codigested with 20% or more manure, COD …
Use Of Lidar In The Design Of Grassed Waterways: Case Study In Agricultural Management In Oklahoma, Annette Sparks
Use Of Lidar In The Design Of Grassed Waterways: Case Study In Agricultural Management In Oklahoma, Annette Sparks
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Before the advent of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, farm-level infrastructure for sustainable agriculture was designed using topographic maps. LiDAR is a remote sensing method whereby reflected laser pulses are measured to generate high-resolution 3D images of the terrain. This report compares these two methods in the design of grassed waterways for flood drainage and evaluates how the quantitative difference between the two methods can affect the overall hydrologic design. The benefits of LiDAR are expected to be higher accuracy and precision in design, as well as greater reproducibility or consistency, regardless of the designer. To carry out this …

A Latent-Class Discrete-Choice Model To Demonstrate How Course Attributes And Student Characteristics Influence Demand For Economics Electives: The Challenge To Increase Enrollment, Reginald T. Dillingham Ii
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A primary goal of universities is to maximize student enrollment by improving course curriculum and enhancing specific programs. This is especially a challenge for smaller universities who want to offer specialized and highly diverse electives. This study aims to increase the quality and relevance of electives offered by understanding specifically what attributes students prefer more or less when choosing among alternatives. The results are used to explore how to use limited marketing and student-outreach financial resources to target students that are most likely to enter and complete courses and programs, based in part on their socioeconomic or demographic characteristics. The …

Evaluating The Consortia Purchase: Journal Usage In A Multi-Institution Setting, Elsa K. Anderson, Stephen Maher, Bill Maltarich
Collaborative Librarianship
When two or more institutions share a license, how do they measure use and value? For over a decade, the Levy Library at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Sid and Ruth Lapidus Library at the New York University School of Medicine, and New York University Libraries at New York University have shared several publisher packages and journal title subscriptions. In this paper, we present our analysis of usage data to assess the value of some of these consortial arrangements in their totality and to each library. Based on this analysis, we were able to adjust how …

Practice Patterns For Sexual History-Taking Among Florida Nurses, Salimah El-Amin, Sandra Suther, Gebre-Egziabher Kiros, Khaing Zaw
Florida Public Health Review
Florida has some of the highest reported sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates in the country. STDs are a particular problem for minorities, women, and adolescents. Sexual history elicitation is a tool available to clinicians to assess patients’ sexual risk behaviors and to counsel, test, and treat STDs. Nurses play an important role in caring for patients’ sexual health problems, including unwanted pregnancies and STDs. We examined the sexual history-taking practices among advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) in Florida. We mailed an anonymous pencil-and- paper survey to measure sexual history-taking practices to a stratified random sample of 795 ARNPs. We analyzed …
Excluding The Problem: Does Supervenience Resolve The Exclusion Problem?, Katelyn S. Hallman
Excluding The Problem: Does Supervenience Resolve The Exclusion Problem?, Katelyn S. Hallman
UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses
The exclusion problem challenges views that hold that the mental is distinct from and irreducible to the physical. I follow Karen Bennett’s formulation of the exclusion problem, which is unique in that it sets up the problem as a set of five inconsistent claims, where at least one of which must be denied: DISTINCTNESS, COMPLETENESS, EFFICACY, EXCLUSION, NON-OVERDETERMINATION. In brief, the issue is that if the mental and physical are distinct, and each is causally sufficient to bring about their effects, then our actions would frequently be overdetermined. However, since mental overdetermination isn’t something that happens frequently, the five claims …

Oil On The Waters? Middle East Studies And Economics Of The Middle East, Karen Pfeifer
Economics: Faculty Publications
The total volume of work on the economies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remains low in comparison to other “developing” regions of the world, but it has been growing since the 1990s. This growth is due in part to the opportunities for students from the region to receive doctoral degrees in the United States and other Western countries and in even greater measure to the dedication of resources by international agencies and organizations to the cultivation of MENA economists. However, the process entails more of a penetration by Western neoclassical economic ideas and modeling techniques into …

A Coin Vibrational Motor Swimming At Low Reynolds Number, Alice C. Quillen, Hesam Askari, Douglas H. Kelley, Tamar Friedmann, Patrick W. Oakes
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Low-cost coin vibrational motors, used in haptic feedback, exhibit rotational internal motion inside a rigid case. Because the motor case motion exhibits rotational symmetry, when placed into a fluid such as glycerin, the motor does not swim even though its oscillatory motions induce steady streaming in the fluid. However, a piece of rubber foam stuck to the curved case and giving the motor neutral buoyancy also breaks the rotational symmetry allowing it to swim. We measured a 1 cm diameter coin vibrational motor swimming in glycerin at a speed of a body length in 3 seconds or at 3 mm/s. …

Situated Transgressiveness: Exploring One Transwoman's Lived Experiences Across Three Situated Contexts, Sara Louise Muhr, Craig Rich, Katie R. Sullivan
Communication Studies Faculty Works
This study investigates the lived experience of one transwoman, Claire, a public advocate and a manager with client services responsibilities. We examine Claire’s story in order to discuss how situated contexts, such as different roles, locales, and interactions, shape the way she experiences and perceives her trans body and gender identity. In particular, our analysis centers on how Claire’s lived experience of personal and professional life shift across three different situated contexts, each enabling and constraining opportunities for political transgression. Our findings contribute to existing conversations within queer theory, transgender, and organization studies by highlighting how situated contexts mediate the …
Network Governance For Large‐Scale Natural Resource Conservation And The Challenge Of Capture, R. P. Bixler, D. M. Wald, L. A. Ogden, K. M. Leong, Michele Romolini
Network Governance For Large‐Scale Natural Resource Conservation And The Challenge Of Capture, R. P. Bixler, D. M. Wald, L. A. Ogden, K. M. Leong, Michele Romolini
Center for Urban Resilience Scholarship
Large‐scale natural resource conservation initiatives are increasingly adopting a network governance framework to respond to the ecological, social, and political challenges of contemporary environmental governance. A network approach offers new modes of management that allow resource managers and others to transcend a single institution, organization, resource, or landscape and engage in conservation that is multi‐species and multi‐jurisdictional. However, there are challenges to network governance in large‐scale conservation efforts, which we address by focusing on how special interests can capture networks and shape the goals, objectives, and outcomes of initiatives. The term “network capture” is used here to describe an array …

Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (Agep): Mid-Term Findings—Brief, Population Council
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) is a four-year effort to support more than 11,000 of the most vulnerable adolescent girls in Zambia. AGEP was led by the Population Council, in partnership with the Young Women’s Christian Association of Zambia, the National Savings and Credit Bank of Zambia, and the Government of Zambia. The program design was based on the asset-building framework which posits that if girls are able to build social, health, and economic assets in the short term, there will be longer-term dividends on health and education outcomes. This brief reports on midterm findings of the study which …

Adolescent Girls Empowerment Programme: Research And Evaluation Mid-Term Technical Report, Karen Austrian, Paul C. Hewett, Erica Soler-Hampejsek, Fiammetta Bozzani, Jere R. Behrman, Jean Digitale
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Programme (AGEP) was a social, health, and economic asset-building program targeting vulnerable adolescent girls aged 10–19. The Population Council, in partnership with the Young Women’s Christian Association of Zambia, successfully implemented the AGEP program from late 2013 to early 2016. The results presented in this midterm report have implications for recommendations on future programming for adolescent girls in Zambia and elsewhere and should be coupled with burgeoning evidence from AGEP and the literature to adapt programming for vulnerable adolescent girls in order to improve impact. While the underlying root causes of girls’ vulnerabilities are interrelated, it …
