Application Of Encoded Microparticles Fabricated By Standard Lithography On Multiplexed Bioassay, Muhan He
Application Of Encoded Microparticles Fabricated By Standard Lithography On Multiplexed Bioassay, Muhan He
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Suspension microarray, has become a popular candidate for multiplexed bioassay since its advent. Unlike traditional planar microarray, suspension microarray permits the probes suspended in aqueous solution while keeping their addresses, and possesses many advantages such as large available binding surface, rapid reaction rate, high multiplexing ability, and high sensitivity and specificity. Photolithography, the technology widely utilized for production of abundant microparticles as carrier in suspension microarray, was investigated by many researchers. However, there was still not a mature, efficient method to produce microparticles with low background, easily recognized identity and good hybridization capacity. To address those issues, we developed a …

Exposure To Interparental Aggression During Youth And Internalizing Psychopathology In Adulthood : The Moderating Role Of The Autonomic Nervous System, Alison J. Rivers
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The present study examines the impact of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an indicator of parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity, and skin conductance level (SCL), an indicator of sympathetic nervous systems (SNS) activity, on the relationship between interparental aggression exposure in childhood and adolescence and internalizing psychopathology (anxiety, depression symptoms, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms) in young adulthood. Participants completed self-report questionnaires regarding youth interparental aggression exposure and current young adult psychopathology. Participants included 188 adults (mean age = 19.45 years old; 72% Caucasian/white; 55% female). Results demonstrate that co-activation of the PNS and SNS in the context of high interparental …
Subnational Predictors Of Racially Motivated Crime : A Cross-National Multilevel Analysis, Sylwia Janina Piatkowska
Subnational Predictors Of Racially Motivated Crime : A Cross-National Multilevel Analysis, Sylwia Janina Piatkowska
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The present study examines the effects of sub-national correlates on the changing rates of racially motivated crime across different regions and counties in seven European countries between 1996 and 2013. Using pooled cross-sectional time-series data on officially recorded racist crimes, I examine whether the regional and county levels of racially motivated crime in these countries’ subnational jurisdictions have been influenced over time by the size of the foreign-born population, increased immigration, and the economic conditions. In developing hypotheses about the effects of these factors, I draw primarily upon the theories of intergroup crime and prejudice.
The Association Between Antidepressant Medications And A1c Among Individuals With And Without Diabetes, Jamie Kammer
The Association Between Antidepressant Medications And A1c Among Individuals With And Without Diabetes, Jamie Kammer
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
While depression is known to increase the risk of diabetes and worsen glycemic control, the effect of antidepressants on these outcomes is unclear. Within the past few years, a cross-sectional study performed in a large, nationally-representative sample of individuals without diagnosed diabetes concluded that there are no differences between antidepressant users and non-users with regard to a number of diabetes-related outcomes including A1C, a measure of average glucose levels over the past few months commonly used to detect and monitor diabetes. The current set of studies was conducted to determine whether replicating this research in a higher-risk population or using …

Intersectional Analysis Of Female Prisoner's Depictions In Orange Is The New Black, Arianne Sharie Watson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this research is to critically analyze Orange is the New Black (OITNB) by conducting an intersectional analysis of seasons 1 and 2. Imprisoned women are excluded from discussions about their oppression. Incarcerated women lack: 1) the four domains of power, which are hegemonic, interpersonal, disciplinary, and structural; and 2) control of their representations. Media’s representations about imprisoned women are accessible through movies, television news, television shows, and newspapers; which have consistently depicted women in prison inaccurately as “bad”, violent, and sexually insatiable. The women who write prison narratives books are not representative of the female prison system, …

Nanotechnology & Human Stem Cells : Applications In Cardiogenesis And Neurogenesis, Martin Lyubomirov Tomov
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Human stem cell research holds an unprecedented promise to revolutionize the way we approach medicine and healthcare in general, moving us from a position of mostly addressing the symptoms to a state where treatments can focus on removing the underlying causes of a condition. Stem cell research can shed light into normal developmental pathways, as we are beginning to replicate them in a petri dish and can also be used to model diseases and abnormal conditions. Direct applications can range from finding cures for single or multigene diseases to demonstrating that we can replace these genes with a normal copy. …

Essays On Patenting, R & D And Technological Innovation, Na Cheng
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The innovative activities by firms are considered to be the main driving force of the economic growth. The patent data has been widely used to investigate the relationship between R&D and patents which are taken as an output indicator of the new invention or innovation. On the other hand, empirical evidence supports that teamwork of inventors fosters innovation and technological progress. Motivated by the importance of understanding the patenting behavior of firms and collaboration of inventors, we exploit the continuing applications of patents, examine the R&D and patents relationship, and investigate the effects of teamwork on innovation output.

The complexity and precision of the eukaryotic cell’s cytoskeletal network is unrivaled by any man-made systems, perfected by billions of years of evolution, mastering elegant processes of self-assembly, error correction, and self-repair. Understanding the capabilities of these networks will have important and far reaching applications in human medicine by aiding our understanding of developmental processes, cellular division, and disease mechanisms, and through biomimicry will provide insights for biosynthetic manufacturing at the nanoscale and across scales. My research utilizes cross species techniques from Human to the model organism of Fission Yeast to investigate the structure and mechanisms of the g-tubulin ring …
Consequences Of Developmental Lead (Pb2+) Exposure On Reproductive Strategies In Drosophila, Elizabeth Kathleen Peterson
Consequences Of Developmental Lead (Pb2+) Exposure On Reproductive Strategies In Drosophila, Elizabeth Kathleen Peterson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Anthropogenic lead (Pb) pollution is ubiquitous in the environment and a risk factor for both human and wildlife health. Pb exposure has the potential to alter reproductive strategies with respect to mate choice and reproductive output. This could be especially deleterious if these changes disrupt adaptive behavioral and reproductive life history strategies. Therefore, the overall aim of this body of work was to examine the consequences of developmental Pb exposure on reproductive strategies, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. In all experiments, D. melanogaster were reared from egg stage to adulthood in either control or leaded medium and were …

All The Single Ladies : How The Intersections Of Race And Family Type Influence Health, Cassandra G. Carter
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Decreasing rates of marriage and the delay of motherhood or decision to forsake childbearing altogether are emergent trends in the United States. Historically, shifts in family composition have always been important, yet the increase in the number of unmarried and child-free adults is rarely acknowledged by health researchers. Race and family type will be used to investigate the health of Black and White unmarried, childless women (SWANS), using intersectional theory, the Social Determinants of Health, and the Sojourner Model. The frequencies of poor health outcomes are analyzed to determine if family type influences health outcomes, and if so, does this …

Naproxen (NAP) is a potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with a favorable cardiovascular profile. However, its long-term use may lead to serious gastrointestinal and renal side effects. NOSH- (nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide) releasing naproxen (NOSH-NAP, AVT-219) belongs to a new class of anti-inflammatory agents designed to overcome these limitations. We compared the gastrointestinal safety, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, and antiplatelet properties of AVT-219 to that of NAP in preclinical animal models. We also evaluated its anticancer effects in 11 human cancer cell (HCC) lines of six different tissue origins and in a chemotherapeutic xenograft mouse model of colon cancer. AVT-219: …
Use Of The Non-Radioactive Sunset Method To Detect Decreased Protein Synthesis In Proteasome Inhibited Arabidopsis Roots, Doug Van Hoewyk
Use Of The Non-Radioactive Sunset Method To Detect Decreased Protein Synthesis In Proteasome Inhibited Arabidopsis Roots, Doug Van Hoewyk
Biology
Background: In eukaryotic cells, the proteasome maintains homeostasis by selectively degrading regulatory and misfolded proteins, and in doing so contributes to the amino acid pool. Inhibition of the proteasome in yeast and human cells decreases de novo protein synthesis. However, it is not know if proteasome inhibition in plants similarly suppresses protein synthesis. To address this gap in plant biology, protein synthesis in Arabidopsis roots was estimated using SUface SEnsing of Translation (SUnSET) techniques. This non-radioactive method has been validated in animal cells, but has not yet been applied to plants. The goal of this study was to investigate the …

Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder, is the second most common neurological illness in United States. Neurologically, it is characterized by the selective degeneration of a unique population of cells, the nigrostriatal dopamine neurons. The current treatment is symptomatic and mainly involves replacement of dopamine deficiency. This therapy improves only motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and is associated with a number of adverse effects including dyskinesia. Therefore, there is unmet need for more comprehensive approach in the management of PD. Cannabis and related compounds have created significant research interest as a promising therapy in neurodegenerative and movement disorders. In this review …
The Roles Of Churches In Reducing The Crime Rate: An Analysis Of Pilsen, Chicago, María Thalía Colompos
The Roles Of Churches In Reducing The Crime Rate: An Analysis Of Pilsen, Chicago, María Thalía Colompos
Honors Capstones
The relationship between religiosity and crime between Whites and Latinas/os has remained in the sociological discourse and has played an integral role in crime rates. This suggests a hypothesis that individual religiosity is salient in creating community and unity among Latinas/os and the perceptions of the role of the church among Whites is strictly to aid in the path of salvation. To test this hypothesis, data is drawn from 10 interviews conducted with five Latinas/os and five Whites. Results from these interviews indicate that Latinas/os are more likely to perceive the church as an outlet for creating community, and that …
Determination Of The Effects Of Cognitive Activity On Postural Sway, Sarah J. Boyd
Determination Of The Effects Of Cognitive Activity On Postural Sway, Sarah J. Boyd
Honors Capstones
Postural control is an elaborate task, especially when simultaneous distractions and cognitive actions arise. In order to determine how postural sway is influenced by concurrent cognitive tasks, research was performed both on younger and older adults. The hypothesis was that postural sway would increase for both younger and older adults during dual-tasks with cognitive activity and balancing. The results showed that postural sway did increase for older adults when the cognitive tasks were difficult. However, this did not hold true for younger adults who showed no significant difference in sway with cognitive activity.

Pursuing Kingdom Growth By Intentionally Engaging Our Culture, Florin Docea
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research project was to strengthen the church’s ability to effectively engage the culture and expand the kingdom of God. This project is important because American Churches have invested time and resources looking for ways to transform the culture. In the process many discovered that the culture has also transformed the church with mixed results. This research project showed that new churches continue to face difficulties engaging the culture without compromising the mission of the church or disrupting the unity of the body. Using the attractional or missional models, churches have struggled in the tension created by …

Role Of Sulfiredoxin Interacting Proteins In Lung Cancer Development, Hedy Chawsheen
Role Of Sulfiredoxin Interacting Proteins In Lung Cancer Development, Hedy Chawsheen
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Sulfiredoxin (Srx) is an antioxidant enzyme that can be induced by oxidative stress. It promotes oncogenic phenotypes of cell proliferation, colony formation, migration, and metastasis in lung, skin and colon cancers. Srx reduces the overoxidation of 2-cysteine peroxiredoxins in cells, in addition to its role of removing glutathione modification from several proteins. In this study, I explored additional physiological functions of Srx in lung cancer through studying its interacting proteins. Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) family members, thioredoxin domain containing protein 5 (TXNDC5) and protein disulfide isomerase family A member 6 (PDIA6), were detected to interact with Srx. Therefore, I proposed …

Straight Time And Scandal: Travesti Urban Politics In São Paulo, Brazil, Christine L. Woodward
Straight Time And Scandal: Travesti Urban Politics In São Paulo, Brazil, Christine L. Woodward
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
São Paulo, Brazil is currently pursuing a project of creative urbanism. Though city rhetoric insists this project is rooted in tolerance of sexual diversity, I suggest that city policy effectively perpetuates normative conceptions of family and respectability. Using data gathered through a series of qualitative interviews with transgender and travesti individuals living in São Paulo, I argue that the straight time of São Paulo’s creative urbanism generates exclusionary temporalities and spatialities in the city that render travestis out of time and out of place. Furthermore, I argue that travestis use their capacity to enact shame through scandals to generate temporalities …
Effects Of Feeding A Yeast-Based Supplement Containing Docosahexaenoic Acid (Dha) From A Heterotrophically Grown Microalgae, Vitamin E, And Selenium On Stallion Sperm Motion Characteristics, Lauren D. Goedde
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
The use of cooled and frozen stallion semen has become quite popular. However, there are some stallions that have sperm that are quite susceptible to cold shock. Thus, there is a need for techniques that will alter sperm so that they can withstand the stresses of cooling and freezing and thus improve pregnancy rates achieved with cooled or frozen spermatozoa. Studies have shown that a diet high in omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids can improve the motility of cooled and frozen/thawed sperm. Many of the omega-3 fatty acid products for stallions have low levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and are based …
Influence Of Structural Disturbance On Stream Function And Macroinvertebrate Communities In Upper Coastal Plain Headwater Streams, Richard Andrew Biemiller
Influence Of Structural Disturbance On Stream Function And Macroinvertebrate Communities In Upper Coastal Plain Headwater Streams, Richard Andrew Biemiller
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Freshwater is a resource under threat due to anthropogenic actions. Stream restoration is a common method for mitigating disturbance. Inconsistent methodologies used for evaluating restorations have drawn criticism. Limited use of baseline data for guiding stream restoration activities is of particular concern. This study was developed to elucidate metrics that differentiate reference and disturbed sites in Upper Coastal Plain streams. This information could improve resource use and successes of restorations. Structural and functional variables were examined in 10 reference and 10 streams that meet the traditional definition of disturbance and would be restoration priorities. Disturbed streams were classified into two …
