Participating clinicians completed a semi-structured interview based on constructs from the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), an organizing framework with demonstrated utility …

Bayesian Signal Detection And Source Separation In Simulated Brain Computer Interface Systems, Muhammad Asim Mubeen Jan 2016

Bayesian Signal Detection And Source Separation In Simulated Brain Computer Interface Systems, Muhammad Asim Mubeen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The problems of signal detection and source separation are important in many fields of science and engineering. In many cases, a target signal needs to be detected in real time and is contaminated by noise. Sometimes the level of noise is on the order of the signal itself. The real time detection of a target signal is of key importance in problems such as the brain computer interface systems. In brain computer interface systems, the neural activity (electric signals) of the brain is detected using sensors (electrodes) on the surface of the brain or the scalp. This signal is contaminated …

Identifying The Limits Of Sexual Liberation As A Feminist Value, Nichole Hungerford Jan 2016

Identifying The Limits Of Sexual Liberation As A Feminist Value, Nichole Hungerford

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This thesis explores feminist responses to the sexual revolution and the extent to which sexual liberation, from the perspective of heterosexual relations, has served women’s interests as an oppressed social group under patriarchy. In particular, this thesis examines the divide between libertarian and radical feminists’ interpretation of sexual liberation, considering both the radical feminist criticisms of the sexist nature of heterosexual sex and the libertarian feminist view of free sexuality as a revolutionary act that ameliorates the condition of women. This thesis offers a middle ground approach to sexual liberation as a feminist value by suggesting two conditions on heterosexual …

Air-Sea Carbon Dioxide Exchange In The Southern Ocean And Antarctic Sea Ice Zone, Brian Butterworth Jan 2016

Air-Sea Carbon Dioxide Exchange In The Southern Ocean And Antarctic Sea Ice Zone, Brian Butterworth

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Southern Ocean is an important part of the global carbon cycle, responsible for roughly half of the carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbed by the global ocean. The air-sea CO2 flux (Fc) can be expressed as the product of the water-air CO2 partial pressure difference (ΔpCO2) and the gas transfer velocity (k), an exchange coefficient which represents the efficiency of gas exchange. Generally, Fc is negative (a sink) throughout the Southern Ocean and Antarctic sea ice zone (SIZ), but uncertainty in k has made it difficult to develop an accurate regional carbon budget. Constraining the functional dependence of k on wind …

The Chemistry Of New Garlic-Derived Organosulfur Compounds And The Molecular Basis Of Olfaction, Berenice Dethier

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Garlic is a very popular condiment that has been used around the world for centuries. It is also a source of a remarkably extensive range of organosulfur compounds, whose chemistry is the focus of this thesis. The central reaction in formation of these compounds is the enzymatic cleavage of alk(en)yl cysteine sulfoxides by alliinases, which leads to sulfenic acids. The latter can then undergo condensation and rearrangement into various organosulfur compounds. Three aspects of the chemistry of garlic have been investigated in this thesis.

A Survey Of The Current Drug Screening Techniques To Obtain Rational Design And Study Drug-Target Interactions, Stephen Dansereau

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Different techniques have been developed over the years for the purpose of studying proteins and understanding their functions. Early techniques typically employed bioluminescence or fluorescence such such as the firefly protein luciferase and the jellyfish green fluorescent protein (GFP), respectively, to localize proteins within the cell. X-ray crystallography has also provided valuable structural details of many different proteins in vitro. Yet, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy offers the most realistic insight into proteins' physiologic structures and how proteins function in their native, cellular environments.

Antibody-Mediated Immunity To Vibrio Cholerae At Epithelial Surfaces, Kara Jeanette Levinson Jan 2016

Antibody-Mediated Immunity To Vibrio Cholerae At Epithelial Surfaces, Kara Jeanette Levinson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of the severe diarrheal disease cholera, has an estimated worldwide disease burden in the millions and remains a significant public health threat. Immunity to V. cholerae is primarily antibody-mediated and though V. cholerae colonization evokes a mucosal immune response, it is the secretory IgA (SIgA) antibodies produced against bacterial surface antigens, specifically lipopolysaccharide (LPS) that confer protective immunity. SIgA antibodies are thought to function by inhibiting colonization by cross-linking and agglutination of pathogens, thereby limiting access to the epithelium, a process known as immune exclusion. Recent studies in other enteric pathogens have demonstrated that SIgA …

The Enlightenment And The Origins Of Racism, Peter Andrew Schrom Jan 2016

The Enlightenment And The Origins Of Racism, Peter Andrew Schrom

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Enlightenment has been thought of as the Age of Reason: the birth of the individual, the rise of print culture, the beginning of the middle class, and an exponential growth in the sciences. The Enlightenment shaped the world into the form that it is today, but it also marks the start of colonization and the slave trade. The following thesis seeks to demonstrate the importance of the Enlightenment to both colonization and the slave trade; that without it neither of these practices would have had the reach that they achieved over time. Using the works of Adam Smith, Jean-Jacques …

Investigation Into The Function Of Endothelial Cells And Their Signaling In Early Salivary Gland Development, Hae Ryong Kwon Jan 2016

Investigation Into The Function Of Endothelial Cells And Their Signaling In Early Salivary Gland Development, Hae Ryong Kwon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Functional vasculature regulates organ formation and regeneration. Perfusion-independent and nutrition-independent endothelial regulation of epithelial patterning is of considerable interest for application in restoring parenchymal function. During murine submandibular salivary gland development, the vasculature co-develops with the epithelium; however, it is still unknown if the vasculature has instructive effects on the epithelium. A systems biological study revealed that endothelial genes are enriched in epithelial clefts, suggesting a potential involvement of endothelial cells in early morphogenesis. Using immunodepletion of the endothelial cells from the mesenchyme of reconstituted glands, a requirement for endothelial cells in epithelial patterning was demonstrated. Specifically, lobule formation was …

A Phylogenetic Investigation Of The Spittlebug Superfamily Cercopoidea (Insecta: Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) With Emphasis On The Family Machaerotidae, Adam Jorgensen Bell

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The superfamily Cercopoidea (Insecta: Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) represents a relatively small insect lineage with just over 2600 species in five described families. Known as spittlebugs, these xylem feeding insects have the unique habit of their nymphs building a frothy matrix of partially digested, excreted plant sap and air bubbles in which they seclude themselves. Despite the size of the superfamily, the phylogenetic relationships among the described families and even the total number of families are still being debated.
