Violence And Warfare In The Late Prehistoric Southwest : A Ritual Explanation, Nia Michelle Alecksynas
Violence And Warfare In The Late Prehistoric Southwest : A Ritual Explanation, Nia Michelle Alecksynas
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The last four decades of research regarding the late prehistoric American Southwest has produced abundant evidence for violence, warfare and cannibalism among the Ancestral Puebloan peoples. Most archaeologists attribute this rise in violence and subsequent abandonment of the Four Corners region to degrading environmental conditions. While ecological factors surely contributed, it is hard to accept that this alone led to the extreme mutilation of hundreds of human remains found throughout the Pueblo territory. It is proposed that increasing social complexity along with new ritual practices resulted in intense and violent attacks throughout the Pueblo expanse.
Space, Place, Gender, And Sexuality : Situational Gender In Four Coffee Houses, Kimberly Tauches
Space, Place, Gender, And Sexuality : Situational Gender In Four Coffee Houses, Kimberly Tauches
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In this dissertation, I explore the notion of situational gender in four coffee houses. Drawing on recent theoretical contributions by Barrie Thorne (1993) and Jacob Hale (1997) I determine the ways in which gender changes salience, as well as how gender shifts for individuals in these specific social settings. The crux of my research question focuses on determining the fluidity of gender in everyday life by highlighting the importance of situation while still maintaining a deep understanding of how gender operates as a major social structure. I draw on recent theoretical notions in gender performance, queer theory, and postmodern theory …
Japanese Knotweed On The Shawangunk Kill : Land Use And The Effect On Success Of An Invasive Species In New York State, William Valleau
Japanese Knotweed On The Shawangunk Kill : Land Use And The Effect On Success Of An Invasive Species In New York State, William Valleau
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Japanese knotweed is a highly invasive plant species that is established throughout the United States, including New York State. It is well established in the literature that this plant is spread easily in riparian areas via moving water. In this study, it was hypothesized that the different land use types adjacent to the stream banks would have an additional influence on the spread of the plant. Agricultural and residential land use types were examined as the most likely to demonstrate the land use influence. The area selected for this study was a portion of the Shawangunk Kill, a stream in …

Craving In Substance And Behavioral Addiction : The Role Of Emotion Regulation, Natalia Christine Orloff
Craving In Substance And Behavioral Addiction : The Role Of Emotion Regulation, Natalia Christine Orloff
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Individuals with emotion regulation difficulties lack the strategies to monitor and evaluate the emotional experience, often leading to an increase in efforts to constrict or conceal the emotional expression. Deficits in emotion regulation are associated with an increase in craving for risky behaviors, such as alcohol and internet use. Non-acceptance and impulse control are two domains of emotion regulation that have been linked to behavioral and substance cravings. What remains to be elucidated is whether these relationships are mediated by strategies employed to control the emotional experience. The current study aims to identify whether thought suppression mediates the relationship between …

Who Feels Included At Work? : Intersectionality And Perceptions Of Diversity And Inclusion In The Workplace, Courtney J. Dallaird
Who Feels Included At Work? : Intersectionality And Perceptions Of Diversity And Inclusion In The Workplace, Courtney J. Dallaird
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
There is a difference between diversity and inclusion in the workforce. More specifically, there is a difference in the understanding and experience that the U.S. cultural meaning of these words creates when interpreted and applied in a workplace setting. Understanding this difference is essential to the work businesses do in actualizing human capital as well as in creating and interpreting methods of providing access, recognizing diversity, and now, increasingly, moving towards a rhetoric of inclusion in the workplace (Roberson, 2006). This research looks at the existing body of knowledge around historical disenfranchisement and the evolution of diversity and inclusion research …
Investigating The Size Dependent Material Properties Of Nanoceria, Bushra B. Alam
Investigating The Size Dependent Material Properties Of Nanoceria, Bushra B. Alam
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Nanoceria is widely being investigated for applications as support materials for fuel cell catalysts, free radical scavengers, and as chemical and mechanical abrasives due to its high antioxidant capacity and its oxygen buffering capacity. This antioxidant or oxygen buffering capacity has been reported to be highly size dependent and related to its redox properties. However, the quantification of this antioxidant capacity has not been well defined or understood and has been often been carried out using colorimetric assays which do not directly correlate to ceria nanoparticle properties. Fabrication rules for developing materials with optimal antioxidant/oxygen buffering capacities are not yet …

What's In A Kiss? : The Role Of Kissing In Romantic Relationships, Kristina N. Spaulding
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A strong understanding of the role of kissing has important theoretical implications; however little research has been done on kissing in romantic relationships. This study aimed to examine the role of kissing in (a) mate assessment, (b) initiating arousal and (c) maintenance of an emotional bond. Data were collected by surveying college students at a public university in the northeast. The first survey (n = 121) examined the memory of the first kiss compared to other sexual “firsts” as well as the relationship between the first kiss and relationship outcome. Memories of the first kiss were weaker than memories of …
Live Fast, Die Young : Anticipated Early Death And Adolescent Violence And Gang Involvement, Arna Leigh Carlock
Live Fast, Die Young : Anticipated Early Death And Adolescent Violence And Gang Involvement, Arna Leigh Carlock
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Strategies employed by criminal justice agencies to reduce offending often focus on deterrence, with policies relying on the threat of punishment to discourage individuals from crime. However, such strategies will fail if individuals do not fear these consequences, or when potential rewards of offending outweigh the risks. According to life history theory, adolescents with a dangerous or unpredictable childhood environment discount the future and engage in risky behaviors because they have little to lose. Many adolescents embody this “live fast, die young” mentality, particularly those already at risk of delinquency due to other factors. The scientific literature refers to this …
Revealing Undergraduates' Conceptual Use Of The Nature Of Science When Evaluating Scientific Information In The Media, Michele A. Snyder
Revealing Undergraduates' Conceptual Use Of The Nature Of Science When Evaluating Scientific Information In The Media, Michele A. Snyder
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study explored undergraduate students’ conceptual use of the nature of science (NOS) when evaluating scientific information presented in the media. Cognitive flexibility theory was used to explain how NOS understanding can be transferred to new learning situations such as those presented in the media. A mixed methods approach was used to assess participants’ NOS conception. Pre and post NOS conceptions were measured using the Student Understanding of Science and Scientific Inquiry (SUSSI) questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to explore the level of NOS conception (naïve, transitional, informed) college-level non-science majors have about NOS and what impact, if any, does …

Work-Family Structures And Cross-National Rates Of Women's Offending, Samantha Applin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation examines women’s offending from a cross-national perspective, using a theoretical lens that integrates insights from feminist and criminological scholarship. The analysis is based on a pooled cross-sectional time-series design, assessing data from 32 European countries for five time points between 1995 and 2010. The purpose of the dissertation is to determine how the effects of work-family and gender indicators are moderated by women’s labor force participation when it comes to predicting women’s theft and homicide. Inclusion of men’s offending helps discern the extent to which the effects of the predictors are specific to the illegitimate behaviors of women, …

Synthetic Study Toward Lycopodium Alkaloids Via A Common Bicyclic Intermediate, Michaela Cara Vertorano
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The lycopodium alkaloids are a family of over 270 naturally occurring compounds, many of which are bioactive. Therefore, developing an efficient manner by which these alkaloids can be synthesized could be incredibly useful in studying their potential medicinal benefits. Herein, steps toward this goal were accomplished. A bicyclic ring structure was synthesized in few steps from commercially available starting materials. This structure can be viewed as a key intermediate from which several lycopodium alkaloids could be synthesized in relatively few steps. The ring system was subject to an aza-Prins cyclization reaction to synthesize the alkaloids lycopodine. Unfortunately the current synthetic …

Cannabis Users' Experience Of Cannabis Craving : A Test Of The Cue-Reactivity Model, Mallory Jane Eglit Loflin
Cannabis Users' Experience Of Cannabis Craving : A Test Of The Cue-Reactivity Model, Mallory Jane Eglit Loflin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Despite craving’s emphasis in treatment programs, little research has been conducted that specifically focuses on cannabis craving. Cannabis use, however, is the second most commonly cited reason for entering treatment for substance abuse and dependency. An understanding of how cannabis users experience craving is necessary. The current study compared heavy/daily cannabis users with infrequent users on measures of craving following presentation of cannabis cues. Hypotheses predicted changes in physiological (heart rate, galvanic skin response) and cognitive (simple reaction time, attentional bias) correlates of craving, and increased self-reported craving following cannabis cue exposure. Results found no significant increase in most indicators …

Evaluating The Immediate Impacts Of Brief Mindfulness Versus Lovingkindness Meditation, Jamie Rae Forsyth
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Although meditation has been around for centuries, it’s only recently that the utility of such an ancient practice has gained popularity within Western psychology. A vast body of literature supports the notion that meditation can have important impacts on suffering and psychopathology; however, few studies have evaluated differential effects between various forms of meditation. The aims of this study are threefold: 1) to determine if a brief meditation can have immediate effects on an individuals’ mood, 2) to determine the validity of two different types of meditations (mindfulness and lovingkindness) and 3) to evaluate the differential efficacy of the two …
Development And Validation Of The Obsessive Compulsive Eating Scale, Martha Niemiec
Development And Validation Of The Obsessive Compulsive Eating Scale, Martha Niemiec
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Objective: Food cravings are common and have been implicated in eating-related pathology, including binge eating, bulimia nervosa, and overweight/obesity, but difficulties in defining and quantifying the phenomenon of craving are well documented. There has been an increase in focus on the study of cognitive mechanisms underlying craving, in particular the role of intrusive thoughts; however, existing craving measures fail to fully capture these aspects of the craving experience. The present study was designed to develop a psychometrically sound measure of the obsessive-compulsive aspects of food cravings.

Human breast cancer is currently the highest diagnosed form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American women. Triple negative breast cancer is of the basal subtype and displays the worst prognosis owing to its highly metastatic properties. Current treatments focused on eradicating breast tumors in lieu of or following local therapy include chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted therapy. Hormonal therapy is not an option for triple negative breast cancer as it does not contain hormone receptors and there are currently no approved biological targeted therapies. Chemotherapy has proven unsuccessful because triple negative breast cancer is …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In current forensic testing, a new pattern is emerging where the drugs that are submitted to crime labs for analysis are no longer restricted to well-characterized substances such as cocaine, heroin and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The appearance of new psychoactive substances (NPS) in forensic laboratories, including synthetic alternatives to scheduled substances and plant-based psychotropics, has highlighted issues that traditional analytical methods such as gas chromatography- and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry impose in the characterization of these samples. These can include lengthy extractions, derivatization steps, pH adjustments and/or a host of other procedures. Since the creation of legislation to address the use of …

Bayesian Signal Detection And Source Separation In Simulated Brain Computer Interface Systems, Muhammad Asim Mubeen
Bayesian Signal Detection And Source Separation In Simulated Brain Computer Interface Systems, Muhammad Asim Mubeen
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The problems of signal detection and source separation are important in many fields of science and engineering. In many cases, a target signal needs to be detected in real time and is contaminated by noise. Sometimes the level of noise is on the order of the signal itself. The real time detection of a target signal is of key importance in problems such as the brain computer interface systems. In brain computer interface systems, the neural activity (electric signals) of the brain is detected using sensors (electrodes) on the surface of the brain or the scalp. This signal is contaminated …
