Climate change and the global energy crisis have led to an increasing need for greenhouse gas remediation and clean energy sources. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising solution for both issues as it harvests waste CO2 and chemically reduces it to more useful forms. However, the high overpotential required for the reaction makes it electrochemically unfavorable. Here, we fabricate a novel electrode composed of TiO2 nanoparticles grown in situ on MXene charge acceptor 2D sheets with excellent CO2RR characteristics. A straightforward solvothermal method was used to grow the nanoparticles on …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, thus, there is an urgent need to develop more effective therapeutic options for this dismal condition. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are associated with improved response to immune checkpoint blockade in HCC, but their low abundance in most cases limits their therapeutic efficacy. Here, we demonstrate, in mice, that low-dose intratumoral immunovirotherapy with the trivalent measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) induces superior tumor-growth delay and extended host survival compared to individually administered vaccines for measles, mumps, or rubella viruses. Further, our results show that MMR therapy synergizes with PD-1 and …

Background: Locomotion can drive variation in an animal’s energy expenditure, but the energetic cost of movement is difficult to measure at fine time scales in free-living animals. The 3 axis acceleration metrics Dynamic Body Acceleration (DBA) and Minimum Specific Acceleration (MSA) are commonly used in biologging studies as a proxy for activity or energy expenditure. These metrics hold potential for relatively simple and affordable estimates of movement-based energy expenditure, but have not been validated for use at fine temporal scales (e.g., within dives) due to logistical limitations of metabolic measurement techniques. Here, we use rates of propulsive power (W kg …

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
Background/Objectives: Race-based cardiac screening criteria in sports cardiology, including the “Black athlete’s heart” concept, assume biological distinctions that may not reflect physiological reality. This systematic review evaluates whether geographic ancestry provides more clinically relevant predictors of cardiac adaptation than racial categorization. Methods: PubMed was searched (January 2005–July 2025) for studies examining cardiac adaptations in athletes by ethnicity. Data extraction captured demographics, geographic origin, cardiac assessments, and outcomes. Narrative synthesis was employed due to methodological heterogeneity. Results: Forty-seven studies (n = 66,130) revealed substantial within-race heterogeneity. The “Black athlete repolarization variant” prevalence ranged from 1.8% (Brazilian) to 30% (Ghanaian) Black athletes. …

Special Education Teachers’ Perceptions Of Teaching Effectiveness When Working With Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Ernest J. Fruge
Special Education Teachers’ Perceptions Of Teaching Effectiveness When Working With Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Ernest J. Fruge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative study examined how special education teachers perceived their teaching effectiveness in supporting students identified with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The study addressed a gap in the literature by examining the factors that influence special educators’ sense of self-efficacy when working with this population. Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy served as the conceptual framework. A generic qualitative research design was employed, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight participants from two central Texas school districts. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis guided the coding and interpretation process, supported by MAXQDA software. Analysis of the data revealed seven key …

Endometriosis is a pathological condition characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial cells, leading to chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Epidemiological studies have associated exposure to dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls, particularly PCB126, with an increased risk of endometriosis. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain poorly understood. We utilized a surgically induced endometriosis mouse model and human endometrial cell lines to assess the impact of PCB126 on endometriosis progression. Mice were exposed to environmentally relevant doses of PCB126. Endometriotic lesion growth, estrogen receptor signaling, receptor tyrosine kinase activity, and gene expression changes induced by PCB126-mediated elevation of DNA methyltransferase 3A …

Evaluating The Potential And Limitations Of Nanopore Adaptive Sampling For Targeted Transcriptome Sequencing, Nicole Debruyne, Feng Wang, Yang Xu, Lan Lin
Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
Long-read RNA sequencing is a powerful technology for transcriptomics, but low throughput and high cost pose challenges. Adaptive sampling, a feature of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, offers real-time enrichment by selectively ejecting non-target molecules. We evaluate adaptive sampling for human transcriptome analysis. Adaptive sampling modestly enriches target transcripts (1.3 × for cDNA sequencing, 1.9 × for direct RNA sequencing) while preserving gene expression and splicing profiles, but is significantly less effective than cDNA hybridization capture. Short read lengths and low sequencing quality limit performance. Adaptive sampling on direct RNA sequencing can boost target yield (~ 20%) within fixed run times, potentially …
A Quantitative Analysis Of Postmarketing Safety Events Of Breakthrough Medicines, Richard Judson Davis
A Quantitative Analysis Of Postmarketing Safety Events Of Breakthrough Medicines, Richard Judson Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adverse events to medicines pose a risk to the public health of patients. Breakthrough therapy medicines are designed to address unmet medical needs and are often approved on an expedited timeline; however they are also criticized for lacking an adequate understanding of their risk profile at the time of approval. This study examined the relationship between the number of concomitant medicines, as well as the approved therapeutic indication, and the outcomes of reported adverse events associated with medicines approved under the breakthrough therapy designation. The conceptual framework applied in this retrospective, cross-sectional, quantitative study is the process of pharmacovigilance, which …

Insights Into Cardiac O-Glcnacylation As A Link Between The Diabetic State And Increased Cardiovascular Disease Susceptibility And Pathology, Samuel Formosa Chang
All ETDs from UAB
With diabetes prevalence around the world nearing 10%, and half of the US population having either diabetes or pre-diabetes, many epidemiological studies show diabetic patients have both increased risk for developing major cardiovascular disease (CVD), and increased mortality rates due to CVD. Additionally, within this field, studies have shown that indi-viduals with previously higher HbA1C levels have higher long-lasting risk for major ad-verse cardiac events compared to those with previously lower HbA1C levels—establishing the concept of “metabolic memory”. Within the diabetic milieu, cardiac protein O-GlcNAcylation (O-linked B-N-acetyl-glucosamine) is important for cardiac pathology de-velopment. Specifically, our lab generated a cardiomyocyte specific, …

The toxicological effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) have attracted considerable research interest due to their known bioaccumulation. However, time-resolved and longitudinal studies that examine in vivo bioaccumulation and clearance remain limited. Here we use Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopies to detect and track the presence of two PAHs: pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and one PAC: 5,12-naphthacenequinone, in murine organ tissues. Mice were exposed to a three-component mixture of these three chemicals, then their organs were collected at 24-, 48-, and 72- hours post-exposure. The accumulation of each of these chemicals in …

Previous studies show that orphan nuclear receptor 4A1 (NR4A1) regulates endometriotic cell growth, survival, estrogen receptor β (ERβ), mechanistic target of rapamycin signaling and fibrosis. NR4A2 is also expressed in epithelial and stromal derived endometriotic cells, and in this study the effects of 1,1-bis(3'-indolyl)-(3,5-disubstitutedphenyl)methane (DIM-3,5) dual NR4A1/nuclear receptor 4A2 (NR4A2) ligands and knockdown of NR4A1 and NR4A2 were investigated. The dual NR4A1/2 DIM-3,5 analogs inhibited previously identified proendometriotic pathways and gene products, and they also inhibited TWIST1 and multiple markers associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The results show that both NR4A1 and NR4A2 regulate the same pathways, including endometriotic cell …

Glioblastoma (GBM) has proved difficult to treat, and there is dire need for more effective therapies. In a single arm phase IIa trial (NCT02455557), treatment of newly diagnosed GBM patients with the peptide vaccine SurVaxM resulted in promising median progression-free and overall survival. To investigate molecular features that associate with GBM responsiveness to SurVaxM, retrospective whole exome and RNA sequencing was performed on patient tumors (n = 34) collected prior to standard of care treatment plus SurVaxM. Differential gene expression and mutational profiles were characterized between patients with short-term (OS < 18 months) or long-term (OS ≥ 18 months) overall survival. Greater expression of interferon, complement, and humoral immunity signatures were associated with long-term survival. Deconvolution of transcriptomes identified enrichment of intratumoral memory B cell populations in long-term survivors that were validated by CD20 staining in matched samples. A five-gene expression signature and a B cell specific signature predicted survival within the SurVaxM-treated cohort, however, these signatures were not associated with improved outcomes in a similarly treated population obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) that did not receive immunotherapeutic intervention. Although prospective validation is ongoing, the findings in this discovery cohort specify molecular features of GBM associated with better overall survival and potential responsiveness to immunotherapy with SurVaxM.

What is the purpose of this PLS-P? The purpose of this plain language summary of publication is to help you understand recent findings from Part 1 of the RUBY study (full name ENGOT-EN6/GOG3031/RUBY trial). • Researchers sometimes study new combinations of already approved individual treatments to see if the combinations work well together and if they are safe to prescribe to patients. • In Part 1 of the RUBY study, the combination of dostarlimab with carboplatin-paclitaxel was investigated to see how well it worked for patients with primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer when compared with patients who were given …
