Determination Of Yolk Contamination In Liquid Egg White Using Raman Spectroscopy, K. Cluff, G. Konda Naganathan, D. Jonnalagada, I. Mortensen, R. Wehling, Jeyamkondan Subbiah

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Purified egg white is an important ingredient in a number of baked and confectionary foods because of its foaming properties. However, yolk contamination in amounts as low as 0.01% can impede the foaming ability of egg white. In this study, we used Raman spectroscopy to evaluate the hypothesis that yolk contamination in egg white could be detected based on its molecular optical properties. Yolk contaminated egg white samples (n = 115) with contamination levels ranging from 0% to 0.25% (on weight basis) were prepared. The samples were excited with a 785 nm laser and Raman spectra from 250 to 3,200 …

Psyc 287: Psychology Of Personality—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Maital Neta Jan 2016

Psyc 287: Psychology Of Personality—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Maital Neta

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

In this portfolio, I am assessing student learning in a mid-level Psychology course, Psyc 287: Psychology of Personality. The course introduces students to the major theories of personality, and covers a wide array of topics intended to provide a broad overview of issues in the field. The course attracts a somewhat representative sample of UNL students, including non-majors, and therefore most are from Nebraska. The course is not a prerequisite to any other courses, but it could be a useful foundation course for students pursuing a career in psychology research, and it could also help people to consider issues related …

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

Rising temperatures and extreme hydrometeorological and climate events are evidences of a changing climate. An increasing population together with their demands for food, energy and water make changes in climate evidence the need to train a new generation of multidisciplinary professionals with a clear understanding of the effects of a changing climate in their activities. Historically, climate sciences were used for scientific and weather operational contexts and engineers applied stationary assumptions for multi-term planning. My goal is to identify elements built from classroom experiences about (a) the suitability of a hydroclimatology course for engineers and scientists; (b) the multidisciplinary skills; …

Lupus Nephritis: A Synopsis Of Pathophysiology And Implications For Advanced Nursing Practice, Nicole G. Warren Jan 2016

Lupus Nephritis: A Synopsis Of Pathophysiology And Implications For Advanced Nursing Practice, Nicole G. Warren

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) can be described as a chronic, complex, autoimmune disorder (McCance & Huether, 2014). Disproportionately affecting women, and those of Afro-Cuban, Hispanic, Asian, and American Indian descent, SLE has a prevalence of 2.0 to 7.6 cases per 100,000 persons in the United States. Characterized by chaotic autoantibody production, complement alterations, and formation of immune complexes, SLE has the potential to generate devastating damage to multiple organ systems. Formed from the binding of autoantibodies and self-antigens, immune complexes often result in renal damage, a significant complication of the disease. Through careful analysis and synopsis of literature, the writer …

The Effects Of Resistance Training Frequency On Muscle Hypertrophy And Strength In Healthy Trained Individuals: Literature Review, Alexander C. Boivin

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of increased resistance training frequency on strength and hypertrophy in trained individuals. Six Studies were deemed eligible based on the inclusion exclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria for this review were healthy trained individuals. “Trained” refers to over one year of resistance training experience. Exclusion Criteria were study’s that examined either untrained or obese individuals as participants. The evidence indicates a dose-response trend in frequency. Resistance training each muscle group twice a week may be superior compared to once per week. Further more, resistance training each muscle group three times a …

Characterization Of Microstructural Mutation Events In Plastomes Of Chloridoid Grasses (Chloridoideae; Poaceae), Thomas J. Hajek Iii Jan 2016

Characterization Of Microstructural Mutation Events In Plastomes Of Chloridoid Grasses (Chloridoideae; Poaceae), Thomas J. Hajek Iii

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Basis for the study: Complete plastome analysis of grasses belonging to the subfamily Chlorodoideae was used as a model for identifying microstructural mutations as a means to produce high-resolution phylogenomic trees. Compared to nucleotide substitutions, microstructural mutations are not as well understood. Methods: High-throughput NextGen Illumina and Sanger sequencing methods were used to obtain chloroplast genomes for nine species (Distichlis spicata, Bouteloua curtipendula, Hilaria cenchroides, Sporobolus heterolepis, Spartina pectinata, Zoysia macrantha, Eragrostis minor, Eragrostis tef and Centropodia glauca ). An exhaustive search of these plastomes produced a binary matrix that was used for phylogenomic analyses. Key results: Notable contradictions for …

Data Integration And Targeted Anticancer Drug Synergies Prediction, Xiaoting Gao Jan 2016

Data Integration And Targeted Anticancer Drug Synergies Prediction, Xiaoting Gao

Public Health Theses

In the past decades, targeted cancer therapies have made considerable achievements in inhibiting cancer progression by modulating specific molecular targets. However, targeted cancer therapies have reached a plateau of efficacy as the primary therapy since tumor cells can achieve adaptability through functional redundancies and activation of compensatory signaling pathways. Therapies using drug combinations have been developed to overcome the bottleneck. Accurate predictions of synergies effect can help prioritize biological experiments to identify effective combination therapies. Data integration can give us a deeper insight into the mechanism of cancer and drug synergies and help to address the challenge in prediction of …

Prevalence And Predictors Of Substance-Related Emergency Psychiatry Admissions, M. Scott Young, Kathleen A. Moore

Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications

Background: Individuals commonly present for emergency psychiatry services for reasons related to their use of alcohol or illicit drugs. This study assessed the prevalence of these phenomena and explored characteristics distinguishing emergency psychiatry admissions with versus without presenting problems related to substance use. Methods: Data included standardized emergency psychiatry intake interviews from 2,161 consecutive admissions to three hospital-based emergency psychiatry departments in Florida’s Tampa Bay area. Admissions were classified as substanceinvolved if substance use was ascertained to be related to the presenting problem(s). Cases with only substance-related presenting problems were classified as substance-only admissions. Descriptive statistics compared substance-involved admissions to …

Intervention E-Mails And Retention: How E-Mails Tailored To Personality Impact An Undergraduate Student's Decision To Return To School Or Not, John Kelly Heffernon Jan 2016

Intervention E-Mails And Retention: How E-Mails Tailored To Personality Impact An Undergraduate Student's Decision To Return To School Or Not, John Kelly Heffernon

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Universities and colleges constantly face a costly problem: low student retention rates. One potential solution to low student retention is a personality-tailored e-mail intervention. The researcher tested this idea with a sample of 59 first-year students from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Participants took a personality assessment in order to measure their personality trait of sociability. Then participants were split into an experimental group and a control group based on a matched-sample paradigm that ensured sociability was not significantly different between the two groups. Participants in the experimental group received four different intervention e-mails throughout the course of the 2015 fall …

Regional Energy Governance And U.S. Carbon Emissions, Hari Osofsky, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman Jan 2016

Regional Energy Governance And U.S. Carbon Emissions, Hari Osofsky, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman

Articles

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s final rule that limits carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants — the Clean Power Plan — is an environmental regulation that powerfully influences energy law and forms a key part of the U.S. plan to meet its voluntary international commitments under the December 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Even if portions of the Plan are ultimately struck down, almost any viable pathway to lower carbon emissions will require greater integration of these two areas of law to address the large percentage of U.S. emissions from the energy sector. This integration produces both challenges …

Nonmarriage, June Carbone, Naomi Cahn Jan 2016

Nonmarriage, June Carbone, Naomi Cahn

Articles

Now that the Supreme Court has reshaped the laws of marriage, attention is shifting to nonmarriage. The law no longer treats intimate couples who do not marry as either deviant or deprived. Yet, rather than regulate nonmarriage in a systematic way, the law applies two inconsistent doctrines to govern these relationships. This Article is the first to explore the fundamental contradiction in the legal approach to unmarried partners. While the laws governing financial obligations between unmarried couples are moving toward a deregulatory model that radically differs from the status-based regulation of marriage, the laws of custody and support insist on …
