Working With Families And Children Affected By Child Abuse And Neglect: A Resource Guide For Professionals, Shawna L. Johnson
Honors Capstones
This project attempts to help with a problem that professionals have that work with families and children affected by child abuse and neglect. This problem includes a lack of resources for the professionals. Although there are a variety of resources for these professionals, they are in a variety of locations, which makes it difficult to manage. This document allows for professionals to come to one location to find a wealth of information in regards to child abuse and neglect. Sections included are on the types of abuse, risk factors, effects of abuse, the non-offending caretaker, effective therapies, legal issues, preventing …
Sexual Education: Abstinence-Only Vs. Comprehensive Education, Alex C. Filippini
Sexual Education: Abstinence-Only Vs. Comprehensive Education, Alex C. Filippini
Honors Capstones
This paper aims to discuss the differences between abstinence-only sexual education and comprehensive sexual education. Both are methods of teaching children, generally from middle school age through high school, about sex and development; however, one focuses on saving sex for marriage (abstinence), while the other teaches this concept along with methods for contraception and sexually transmitted infection prevention (comprehensive). By discussing the background of sexual education in the United States (US), the curriculum in both the United States (US) and European countries (the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, and France), and methods for improving US sexual education, this paper will discuss the …
Systematically Developing Assessments Aligned With The Next Generation Science Standards For Middle School Students, Ansley J. Wells
Systematically Developing Assessments Aligned With The Next Generation Science Standards For Middle School Students, Ansley J. Wells
Honors Capstones
The title of this capstone project was Systematically Developing Assessments Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards for Middle School Students. Science is a subject in which many United States students struggle (Martin, Mullis, Foy, & Stanco, 2012). New assessments for teacher use and aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards are needed because these content standards are significantly different and more rigorous than current K-12 science standards (Pellegrino, Wilson, Koenig, & Beatty, 2014; Quinn, Schweingruber, & Keller, 2012). This capstone project involved constructing a science assessment that focused on a wide variety of science concepts from the life, physical, …

Hidden Narrative: A Family Of Objects, Alesha Hassard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My artwork aims to create an ephemeral world filled with metaphorical materials. I examine and use my own experiences and perspectives, presenting fluctuations between childhood and adulthood. The personal objects that represent these times frame an implied sentience. The objects, gathered and installed in specific groupings, connote familial relationships.
From Ashes To Ashé: Memorializing Traumatic Events Through Participatory Digital Archives, Patricia Carlton
From Ashes To Ashé: Memorializing Traumatic Events Through Participatory Digital Archives, Patricia Carlton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic, cataclysmic events, whether caused by man-made or natural forces, threaten the safety, stability, and resilience of a community or state. Additionally, massive media exposure given to documenting and providing information, place the media consumers at psychological risk. As an alternative to broadcast news reports, online memorials and disaster archives provide the public the means and central locations for witnessing catastrophic events, as well as collectively commemorating and mourning the tragic losses. According to psychological and ethnographic research, narrativizing the trauma through shared memories and artifacts of mourning produce multiple therapeutic benefits, including the likely development of cognitive awareness, empathy, …
Computational Methods For Comparative Non-Coding Rna Analysis: From Secondary Structures To Tertiary Structures, Ping Ge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unlike message RNAs (mRNAs) whose information is encoded in the primary sequences, the cellular roles of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) originate from the structures. Therefore studying the structural conservation in ncRNAs is important to yield an in-depth understanding of their functionalities. In the past years, many computational methods have been proposed to analyze the common structural patterns in ncRNAs using comparative methods. However, the RNA structural comparison is not a trivial task, and the existing approaches still have numerous issues in efficiency and accuracy. In this dissertation, we will introduce a suite of novel computational tools that extend the classic models …
Application Of Landfill Treatment Approaches For The Stabilization Of Municipal Solid Waste, Stephanie Bolyard
Application Of Landfill Treatment Approaches For The Stabilization Of Municipal Solid Waste, Stephanie Bolyard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research focused on the fundamental requirements of stabilizing a mature landfill using three treatment approaches as well as the implications of discharging leachate organic matter (LOM) to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Three treatment approaches aimed at removing releasable carbon and nitrogen from mature landfills including flushing with clean water, leachate recirculation with ex-situ chemical oxidation, and leachate recirculation with ex-situ chemical oxidation and in-situ aeration were evaluated. After extensive treatment of the waste in the flushing bioreactor (FB) scenarios, the overall biodegradable fraction was reduced relative to mature waste. Leachate quality improved for all FBs but through different mechanisms. …

On Randic Energy Of Graphs, Brittany Burns
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this research, we explore the subject of graph energy. We first discuss the connections between linear algebra and graph theory and review some important definitions and facts of these two fields. We introduce graph energy and provide some historical perspectives on the subject. Known results of graph energy are also mentioned and some relevant results are proven. We discuss some applications of graph energy in the physical sciences. Then, Randic energy is defined and results are given and proved for specific families of graphs. We focus on simple, connected graphs that are commonly studied in graph theory. Also, the …

Plain Facts About Anthropogenic Global Climate Change And Warming: A Review, M. K. Cleaveland
Plain Facts About Anthropogenic Global Climate Change And Warming: A Review, M. K. Cleaveland
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Anthropogenic global climate change (AGC) is proceeding rapidly. The proximate cause is the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases (GHG), which have rapidly accumulated in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels and other human activities. Measurements of incoming and outgoing radiation have verified the warming imbalance. Effects manifest themselves in accelerating sea level rise and diminishment of the cryosphere. This has already created climatic refugees and water stress, and will destroy coastal infrastructure. It also impacts ecosystems and biodiversity in many ways. To avoid catastrophic effects, fossil fuel use must cease and carbon sinks must be …
Water-Quality Effects On Phytoplankton Species And Density And Trophic State Indices At Big Base And Little Base Lakes, Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, June Through August, 2015, L. J. Driver, B. G. Justus
Water-Quality Effects On Phytoplankton Species And Density And Trophic State Indices At Big Base And Little Base Lakes, Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, June Through August, 2015, L. J. Driver, B. G. Justus
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Big Base and Little Base Lakes are located on Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, and their close proximity to a dense residential population and an active military/aircraft installation make the lakes vulnerable to water-quality degradation. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a study from June through August 2015 to investigate the effects of water quality on phytoplankton species and density and trophic state in Big Base and Little Base Lakes, with particular regard to nutrient concentrations. Nutrient concentrations, trophic-state indices, and the large part of the phytoplankton biovolume composed of cyanobacteria, indicate eutrophic conditions were prevalent for Big Base …

Dna Barcoding Of The First Recorded American Burying Beetle, Nicrophorus Americanus, In Clark County, Arkansas, J. Kelly, T. Files, N. Reyna, B. Baley
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The American Burying Beetle (ABB), Nicrophorus americanus, is a red-listed endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). We serendipitously recorded 3 individuals of this species during a forensic study in the summer of 2013. These specimens represent the first known records for Clark County, AR and the southeastern-most record in the State since the extirpation of the species from the region in the late 1800’s. Two males and one female were collected, photographed, sexed and measured. One male specimen was deceased upon discovery. The remaining two individuals were released. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Ohio shrimp (Macrobrachium ohione) is a migratory (amphidromous) river shrimp that occurs in some Arkansas rivers. It is known from the Upper Missouri River from its mouth downstream to the Gulf of Mexico, but shrimp abundance has declined, particularly upstream of Louisiana. Ohio Shrimp has also been collected in the lower reach of the Missouri River not far from the confluence of the Mississippi River in St. Louis County. Dams and alterations in channel flow are hypothesized to have impacted upriver migrations of shrimp. Current range, abundance, and life history of Ohio shrimp is relatively unknown in the Mississippi …

Food Habits Of Green Tree Frogs (Hyla Cinerea) From Arkansas, C. S. Thigpen, H. Dodson, S. E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We analyzed stomach contents of 120 Green Tree Frogs, Hyla cinerea, collected between May 1956 and October 2014 in Arkansas. Beetles and arachnids were the predominant prey item; the next most abundant groups were Diptera and Hemiptera. Vegetable matter was also found in several frogs. All identifiable vegetable matter was determined to be of the genus Persicaria, colloquially known as smartweed. Our data suggests that Green Tree Frogs in Arkansas predominantly feed on beetles and arachnids, but occasionally ingest plant matter when actively foraging.

Jesus says in the Gospel of John, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) But what did he mean by that? And, what does that saying mean to you and me today? On one hand, we in the modern era might take this to mean that the discovery of truth about the world, science, and technology will help us do problem-solving in ways that lead to progress. After all, modern science has led to the eradication of many illnesses, food and drinking water are more available now than ever before in human history, …
An Event-Related Potential Study Of Social Information Processing In Adolescents, Danielle Difilipo, Jillian Grose-Fifer
An Event-Related Potential Study Of Social Information Processing In Adolescents, Danielle Difilipo, Jillian Grose-Fifer
Publications and Research
Increased social awareness is a hallmark of adolescence. The primary aim of this eventrelated potential study was to investigate whether adolescents, in comparison to adults, would show relatively enhanced early neural processing of complex pictures containing socially-relevant information. A secondary aim was to investigate whether there are also gender and age differences in the ways adolescents and adults process social and nonsocial information. We recorded EEGs from 12–17 year-olds and 25–37 year-olds (N = 59) while they viewed pleasant pictures from the International Affective Picture System. We found age-related amplitude differences in the N1 and the LPP, and gender-related differences …
Hispanic "Teologia En Conjunto”, Jeannine Graham
Hispanic "Teologia En Conjunto”, Jeannine Graham
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Pervasive throughout postmodern theological perspectives is the contention that all theology is contextual. One's knowledge and understanding of God, the natural world, human beings and their interrelations is inescapably filtered through overlaid lenses of language, culture, history, socioeconomic status, religious traditions, and faith experience. "Teologia en Conjunto" (literally, "in conjunction with;' "conjoined to") expresses the conviction of a growing number of Latino theologians that this nexus of influencing contextual factors is not tangential to but rather formative of one's theology. The social, cultural or ethnic location of Latinos, consciously or unconsciously, shapes how they interpret life experiences as well as …

An Exploration Of Home-Based Therapists’ Supervisory Experiences: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Cherre Camper
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
In-home family therapy has become one of the most common options of treatment for providing services to families who do not typically utilize a private clinic (Lawson, 2005; Reiter, 2000; Yorgason, McWey, & Felts, 2005). Researchers have given some attention to the topic of home-based therapy and to general supervision, but little attention has focused on the actual supervision experiences of home-based therapy providers. This phenomenological study explored the supervision experiences of seven past and current in-home therapists: marriage and family therapists (MFTs) and social workers (MSWs). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants, and data was analyzed to develop …

Veal: The Rise Of Generation Interactive, Patrick Aievoli
Zea E-Books Collection
The purpose of this book is to investigate and discuss the premise that the current generation was constructed to be consumers for a transitional marketplace. As the economy shifted from analog to digital, consumers had to be trained to accept, use and progress within a new economic model through changes in societal and economic patterns. During the course of this book those patterns will be discussed and displayed as a confluence of: Marketplace manipulation, Abusive use of technologies, and Lack of governance.
In this book I discuss how those events are reflected in the habits and lifestyles of the current …
