Bait Flavor Preference And Immunogenicity Of Onrab Baits In Domestic Dogs On The Navajo Nation, Arizona, Are R. Berentsen, Scott Bender, Peggy Bender, David Bergman, Amy T. Gilbert, Hannah M. Rowland, Kurt C. Vercauteren
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Rabies is responsible for an estimated 59,000 human deaths worldwide, and domestic dogs are the primary reservoir and vector of the disease. Among some nations, widespread vaccination has led to elimination of rabies in domestic dogs, yet dogs are still susceptible to rabies infection from interactions with wildlife reservoirs. On Tribal lands in the United States, less than 20% of domestic dogs are vaccinated for rabies, and parenteral vaccination is often unfeasible. Oral rabies vaccination may provide a solution, but a suitable bait flavor and vaccine must be identified. We evaluated 5 bait flavors (bacon, cheese, egg, fish, and sweet) …

An Approach Based On Neural Computation To Simulate Transition Metals Using Tight Binding Measurements, Adel Belayadi, Boualem Bourahla, Leila Ait-Gougam, Fawzia Mekideche-Chafa
Turkish Journal of Physics
A theoretical study of neural networks modeling, based on the tight binding approach, is proposed in this study. The aim of the present contribution is to establish a network topology to compute the binding energy parameters of transition metals. However, because of the different types of crystallization fcc, bcc, hcp, and sc of transition metals, neural network topology determination cannot be easily established, i.e. it would not be able to collect the data to feed the neurocomputing model. Hence, in order to overcome this problem, it would be helpful to distinguish one common structure from fcc, bcc, hcp, and sc. …

Determination Of The Effective Atomic Numbers Of Fe$_{X}$Cu$_{1-X} $Binary Ferroalloys Using A Nondestructive Technique: Rayleigh-To-Compton Scattering Ratio, Mehmet Büyükyildiz
Turkish Journal of Physics
The aim of the present study is to determine effective atomic numbers ($Z_{eff})$ of Fe$_{x}$Cu$_{1-x} $ binary ferroalloys using scattering of 59.54 keV gamma photons at 130$^{\circ}$ ($x=4.36{{\unicode{x212B}}}^{-1})$ scattering angle. For this purpose, the Rayleigh ($R)$ and Compton ($C)$ scattering intensities for the given alloys were measured using a monoenergetic beam of 59.54 keV gamma rays and the Rayleigh-to-Compton scattering ratio $R/C $was determined. Then the $Z_{eff}$ values of these alloys were determined by interpolating the $R/C$ of the material using the $R/C$ data of adjacent elements in between the $R/C$ of the alloys. For comparison, $Z_{eff}$s of alloys were …
Renaissance Beauty = Today’S Ugly: Socioculturally Relative Appearance Factors And Attractiveness Judgments, Don Osborn
Renaissance Beauty = Today’S Ugly: Socioculturally Relative Appearance Factors And Attractiveness Judgments, Don Osborn
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
By comparing photos of portraits of the faces of Renaissance courtesans to photos of attractive contemporary women’s faces this study estimates the importance of sociocultural factors in the personal perception of faces. Physical attractiveness is an important causal factor in choosing a sex partner, so the difference between averaged attractiveness judgments, a focus of attractiveness research, and individual attractiveness judgment, most relevant to choosing a sex partner, is important. Except for modesty and faithfulness, 13 normally attractive contemporary models were rated much more positively by college student participants (N = 189) than were eight celebrated Renaissance courtesans, both in …
The Effect Of Stress Coping Techniques In Sports, Lestter Yeh
The Effect Of Stress Coping Techniques In Sports, Lestter Yeh
CMC Senior Theses
The first part of this literature review goes over the biological and psychological aspects of stress. The cause of stress can be linked back to a primitive instinct known as “fight or flight.” The “fight or flight” instinct is triggered by several chemical reactions in the body starting from a signal from the amygdala to the sympathetic nervous system. Stress can also be categorized into internal and external stress. Further research links stress to sports. Many studies show that stress coping techniques such as meditation, self-talk, rituals, etc. are beneficial to athletes during competition. Suggested avenues of further research are …
Hemoglobin–Oxygen Affinity In High-Altitude Vertebrates: Is There Evidence For An Adaptive Trend?, Jay F. Storz
Hemoglobin–Oxygen Affinity In High-Altitude Vertebrates: Is There Evidence For An Adaptive Trend?, Jay F. Storz
Jay F. Storz Publications
In air-breathing vertebrates at high altitude, fine-tuned adjustments in hemoglobin (Hb)–O2 affinity provide an energetically efficient means of mitigating the effects of arterial hypoxemia. However, it is not always clear whether an increased or decreased Hb–O2 affinity should be expected to improve tissue O2 delivery under different degrees of hypoxia, due to the inherent trade-off between arterial O2 loading and peripheral O2 unloading. Theoretical results indicate that the optimal Hb–O2 affinity varies as a non-linear function of environmental O2 availability, and the threshold elevation at which an increased Hb–O2 affinity becomes advantageous …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Species richness generally promotes ecosystem productivity, although the shape of the relationship varies and remains the subject of debate. One reason for this uncertainty lies in the multitude of methodological approaches to sampling biodiversity and productivity, some of which can be subjective. Remote sensing offers new, objective ways of assessing productivity and biodiversity. In this study, we tested the species richness–productivity relationship using a common remote sensing index, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), as a measure of productivity in experimental prairie grassland plots (Cedar Creek). Our study spanned a growing season (May to October, 2014) to evaluate dynamic changes …
Androgyny/Hermaphroditism: Hebrew Bible, Jennifer J. Williams
Androgyny/Hermaphroditism: Hebrew Bible, Jennifer J. Williams
Faculty Publications
The Hebrew Bible lacks a term for androgyny or hermaphroditism. The term tumtumim, which identifies persons of indeterminate or “hidden” sex, appears later in rabbinic texts. Nevertheless, sexual fluidity, ambiguity, intersexed persons, and persons with a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics appear in the Genesis creation stories and prophetic texts. While gender transgression is relevant to the general discussion, this entry from The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Gender Studies: Oxford Biblical Studies Online focuses primarily on ancient understandings, namely those presented in the Hebrew Bible, of those of “both sexes.”

Automated Identification Of Monogeneans Using Digital Image Processing And K-Nearest Neighbour Approaches, E.Y. Kalafi, W.B. Tan, C. Town, S.K. Dhillon
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Background: Monogeneans are flatworms (Platyhelminthes) that are primarily found on gills and skin of fishes. Monogenean parasites have attachment appendages at their haptoral regions that help them to move about the body surface and feed on skin and gill debris. Haptoral attachment organs consist of sclerotized hard parts such as hooks, anchors and marginal hooks. Monogenean species are differentiated based on their haptoral bars, anchors, marginal hooks, reproductive parts' (male and female copulatory organs) morphological characters and soft anatomical parts. The complex structure of these diagnostic organs and also their overlapping in microscopic digital images are impediments for developing fully …

Dengue virus infection is a very deadly disease that threatens human lives in subtropical and tropical regions. Thus, for early and reliable diagnosis of Dengue virus infection, a sensitive, specific, and label-free electrochemical immunosensor was developed for the direct detection of the unstructured protein NS1. The NS1 biosensor was designed with a biosensing surface consisting of antifouling moieties and biorecognition molecules to enhance the specificity of the immunosensor for target analyte detection in complicated biological samples such as human sera. The immunosensor exhibited a wide detection range (54000 ng/mL) based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements with a coefficient of …
Esterification Of Glycerol From Biodiesel Production To Glycerol Carbonate In Non‑Catalytic Supercritical Dimethyl Carbonate, Zul Ilham
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Conversion of glycerol from biodiesel production to glycerol carbonate was studied by esterification with dimethyl carbonate in a non-catalytic supercritical condition. It was found that in a non-catalytic supercritical condition, glycerol at higher purity gave higher yield of glycerol carbonate at 98 wt% after reaction at 300 °C/20–40 MPa/15 min. The yield of glycerol carbonate was observed to increase with molar ratio, temperature, pressure and time until a certain equilibrium limit. The existence of impurities such as water and remnants of alkaline catalyst in crude glycerol will direct the reaction to produce glycidol. Although impurities might not be desirable, the …

There is an increased interest in the use of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) for orthopedic and dental implant applications due to its elastic modulus close to that of bone, biocompatibility, and its radiolucent properties. However, PEEK is still categorized as bioinert due to its low integration with surrounding tissues. Many studies have reported on methods to increase the bioactivity of PEEK, but there is still one-preparation method for preparing bioactive PEEK implant where the produced implant with desirable mechanical and bioactivity properties is required. The aim of this review is to present the progress of the preparation methods for improvement …

Roles Of Cofactors And Chromatin Accessibility In Hox Protein Target Specificity, C.Y. Beh, S. El-Sharnouby, A. Chatzipli, S. Russell, S.W. Choo, R. White
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Background: The regulation of specific target genes by transcription factors is central to our understanding of gene network control in developmental and physiological processes yet how target specificity is achieved is still poorly understood. This is well illustrated by the Hox family of transcription factors as their limited in vitro DNA-binding specificity contrasts with their clear in vivo functional specificity. Results: We generated genome-wide binding profiles for three Hox proteins, Ubx, Abd-A and Abd-B, following transient expression in Drosophila Kc167 cells, revealing clear target specificity and a striking influence of chromatin accessibility. In the absence of the TALE class homeodomain …

Cree/Métis filmmaker Danis Goulet’s science fiction short Wakening (2013) is set in Canada’s near future, yet the film reveals a slipstream of time where viewers are invited to contemplate the horrors of ecosocial crises—future, past, and present. I argue Wakening, as futuristic ecohorror, produces horrific feelings in the moment of its viewing that are inevitably entangled with the past, inviting its audiences to experience the monstrous contexts of Indigenous lives across time. To articulate this temporal dynamism, I overlay two key conceptual understandings: Walter Benjamin’s critiques of Western progress and historicism, and Indigenous notions of a Native slipstream. When brought …

Nanomedicine is becoming very popular over conventional methods due to the ability to tune physico-chemical properties of nanovectors, which are used for encapsulation of therapeutic and diagnostic agents. However, the success of nanomedicine primarily relies on how specifically and efficiently nanocarriers can target pathological sites to minimize undesirable side effects and enhance therapeutic efficacy. Here, we introduce a novel class of targeted nano drug delivery system, which can be used as an effective nano-theranostic for cancer. We formulated pH-sensitive niosomes (80–90 nm in diameter) using non-ionic surfactants Span20 (43–45 mol%), cholesterol (50 mol%) and 5 mol% of pH (Low) Insertion …

We have developed a way to measure cell surface pH by positioning a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye, seminaphtharhodafluor (SNARF), conjugated to the pH low insertion peptide (pHLIP). It has been observed that many diseased tissues are acidic and that tumors are especially so. A combination of effects acidifies tumor cell interiors, and cells pump out lactic acid and protons to maintain intracellular pH, acidifying the extracellular space. Overexpression of carbonic anhydrases on cell surfaces further contributes to acidification. Thus, the pH near tumor cell surfaces is expected to be low and to increase with distance from the membrane, so bulk pH …
