The Interplay Between Traditional And Modern Values And Interpersonal Variables In Mental Disorders And Mental Health, Andreas Maercker Jan 2016

The Interplay Between Traditional And Modern Values And Interpersonal Variables In Mental Disorders And Mental Health, Andreas Maercker

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Our research focuses on values and mental health, and possible mediating factors. Based on two value-related theories – Schwartz’s and Inglehart’s - we suggest a complex prediction model: It hypothesises that social support mediates the relationship between traditional values and mental health, whereas the relationship between modern values and mental health is mediated by resilience. We tested our model with three large student samples from China, Russia, and Germany. By and large, our hypotheses were confirmed: Particularly traditional values were relevant for mental health by predicting social support and thence mental health. With regard to modern values, the value of …

Development Of Practical Vocational Training Class Making Use Of Virtual Reality-Based Simulation System And Augmented Reality Technologies, Hoi Kok, Calvin Cheung, Sai Lok, Eric Liu

Staff Publications

Virtual reality (VR) refers to the technologies creating a virtual environment to provide users a sensory simulation of the environment being presented. In Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), we are in the process of developing a VR-based simulation system having four screens surrounding users to simulate an immersive environment. This application is commonly known as the cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE). The objective of our VR-based simulation system project is to apply the virtual reality and the augmented reality (AR) technologies for practical training in vocational education and training (VET). Our system is used for various training programs …

Nanocrystalline ZnO photocatalysts were prepared by a sol–gel method and modified with fluorine to improve their photocatalytic anti-bacterial activity in visible light. Pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) were employed to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of synthesized materials. The interaction with biological systems was assessed by analysis of the antibacterial properties of bacteria suspended in 2% (w/w) powder solutions. The F-doping was found to be effective against S. aureus (99.99% antibacterial activity) and E. coli (99.87% antibacterial activity) when irradiated with visible light. Production of reactive oxygen species is one of the major factors that …

1-65-S-Algal Blooms: Algal Blooms Threatening Lake Chapala, R. Corban Harwood

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

This modeling scenario investigates the massive algal blooms that struck Lake Chapala, Mexico, starting in 1994. After reading a summary of articles written on the incidents, students are guided through the process of creating a first order differential equation from a verbal model of the factors and analyze the nonautonomous ODE using direction field, parameter evaluation, and exact solution computation to fully describe the population behavior. Students are expected to be familiar with the separable method and direction fields. Students will learn building and improving a model from qualitative descriptions, nondimensionalization, evaluating parameters, and how to use DFIELD software to …

Oscillation-Free Method For Semilinear Diffusion Equations Under Noisy Initial Conditions, R. Corban Harwood, Likun Zhang, V. S. Manoranjan Jan 2016

Oscillation-Free Method For Semilinear Diffusion Equations Under Noisy Initial Conditions, R. Corban Harwood, Likun Zhang, V. S. Manoranjan

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

Noise in initial conditions from measurement errors can create unwanted oscillations which propagate in numerical solutions. We present a technique of prohibiting such oscillation errors when solving initial-boundary-value problems of semilinear diffusion equations. Symmetric Strang splitting is applied to the equation for solving the linear diffusion and nonlinear remainder separately. An oscillation-free scheme is developed for overcoming any oscillatory behavior when numerically solving the linear diffusion portion. To demonstrate the ills of stable oscillations, we compare our method using a weighted implicit Euler scheme to the Crank-Nicolson method. The oscillation-free feature and stability of our method are analyzed through a …

Designing Genes That Encode Proteins For Biomedical Applications, Isaiah Traben Jan 2016

Designing Genes That Encode Proteins For Biomedical Applications, Isaiah Traben

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

DNA is a crucial component of all known life. It encodes in genes the structure of the proteins necessary to perform many of the functions in a cell. Proteins are biological polymers consisting of a chain of amino acids. The specific sequence of the amino acids determines the structure and therefore function of the protein. The sequence of the amino acids of a protein is coded in DNA via triplets of the nucleotide bases known as codons, which each can represent only one amino acid. However, an amino acid can be represented by more than one codon, so there are …

Phosphorus Concentrations In The Cuyahoga River Watershed Linked To Anthropogenic Inputs, Christopher Kasden Jan 2016

Phosphorus Concentrations In The Cuyahoga River Watershed Linked To Anthropogenic Inputs, Christopher Kasden

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

Twenty-four water samples were taken from twelve sites throughout the Cuyahoga watershed from upstream to downstream within two separate occasions. Twelve samples were taken on May 25th, 2016 with no prior precipitation and the conditions were calm, and twelve samples were taken on July14, 2016 when high precipitation had occurred and water conditions were much more diverse. Using the Automated Discrete Analyzer, the concentrations of phosphorus could be analyzed and differentiated between Total Phosphorus and Soluble Reactive Phosphorus. In comparison to the Environmental Protection Agency whose target concentrations for rivers is .05ppm, in both cases of the experiment the hypothesis …

Rachel Dolezal, Caitlyn Jenner, And Identity Transformation: Identity Legitimization In Internet Comments, Sarah G. Pillow

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

This paper looks at the ways in which a person's identity may be legitimized or delegitimized by looking at the supposed identity transformations of Rachel Dolezal and Caitlyn Jenner, and the subsequent internet reactions. Through analyzing one article and its associated public comments, this paper considers the citizen critic and their role in creating an identity through five criteria of legitimization: identity has evidence to back it up; perceived truthfulness of the person; permanence of identity; experience of oppression; and activism and/or advocacy.

How First Generation Students Acclimate To The College Campus, Emani Richmond

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

This population of first-generation students is ripe for study because of their growing prominence on college campuses across the nation. The existing literature on FGS takes a more specific approach through looking at individual measures that are taken to support FGS such as the role of “academic self-concept,” how FGS negotiate the multiple identities they represent while in college, and how to retain students from low-income backgrounds (DeFreitas & Rinn, 2013; Orbe, 2004; Thayer, 2000). These studies are valuable because they bring information to the people that support FGS in assisting support staff with the understanding of their unique hurdles …

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Hair cells tightly control the dimensions of their stereocilia, which are actin-rich protrusions with graded heights that mediate mechanotransduction in the inner ear. Two members of the myosin-III family, MYO3A and MYO3B, are thought to regulate stereocilia length by transporting cargos that control actin polymerization at stereocilia tips. We show that eliminating espin-1 (ESPN-1), an isoform of ESPN and a myosin-III cargo, dramatically alters the slope of the stereocilia staircase in a subset of hair cells. Furthermore, we show that espin-like (ESPNL), primarily present in developing stereocilia, is also a myosin-III cargo and is essential for normal hearing. ESPN-1 and …

A Field Test Of Fisheries Observer Sampling Methods For Estimation Of At-Sea Discards, Jennifer Cahalan, Craig Faunce, Julie Bonney, Robert Swanson Jan 2016

A Field Test Of Fisheries Observer Sampling Methods For Estimation Of At-Sea Discards, Jennifer Cahalan, Craig Faunce, Julie Bonney, Robert Swanson

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Estimation of at-sea discards is an issue that has received considerable attention worldwide. With this increasing focus, there is a need for greater precision of weight estimates for less common and fishery-limiting species. While one solution is to mandate full (100%) observer coverage to reduce uncertainty in estimation at the trip level, variance from on-deck sampling methods (e.g. within-haul) should also be properly addressed. Commercial fishing vessels are not perfect sampling platforms and all sampling methods suffer from implementation issues that potentially impact the quality of the data collected and the resulting estimates. We conducted a cooperative study with industry …

Improved Estimation Of Intrinsic Growth RMax For Long-Lived Species: Integrating Matrix Models And Allometry, Peter W. Dillingham, Jeffrey E. Moore, David Fletcher, Enric Cortés, K. Alexandra Curtis, Kelsey C. James, Rebecca L. Lewison Jan 2016

Improved Estimation Of Intrinsic Growth RMax For Long-Lived Species: Integrating Matrix Models And Allometry, Peter W. Dillingham, Jeffrey E. Moore, David Fletcher, Enric Cortés, K. Alexandra Curtis, Kelsey C. James, Rebecca L. Lewison

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Intrinsic population growth rate (rmax) is an important parameter for many ecological applications, such as population risk assessment and harvest management. However, rmax can be a difficult parameter to estimate, particularly for long- lived species, for which appropriate life table data or abundance time series are typically not obtainable. We describe a method for improving estimates of r max for long- lived species by integrating life- history theory (allometric models) and population- specific demographic data (life table models). Broad allometric relationships, such as those between life history traits and body size, have long been recognized by ecologists. …
