Photoassisted Generation Of Complex N, O, S Polyheterocycles, Weston James Umstead Jan 2016

Photoassisted Generation Of Complex N, O, S Polyheterocycles, Weston James Umstead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research set out to continue the exploration and diversification of excited state o-azaxylylene cycloadditions, utilizing both pre-photochemical and post-photochemical modifications.

Pre-photochemical modifications came through the addition of heteroatoms, namely nitrogen and oxygen, to the tether that links the unsaturated photopendant to the photogenerated o-azaxylylene. Photochemistry resulted in the formation of new, interesting N, O, S polyheterocycles.

Post-photochemical modifications took place through several different cycloaddition reactions, including a [4+2] hetero-Diels Alder reaction, a [4+2] Povarov cyclization, a [3+2] nitrile oxide addition, and a [3+2] nitrone cyclization. These reactions were applied first to a model system, and then to …

The Online Dating Preferences Of Chinese American Older Adults, Lin Jiang Jan 2016

The Online Dating Preferences Of Chinese American Older Adults, Lin Jiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recently years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of online dating websites among adults over age 50. Nevertheless, samples collected in existing literature are mainly centered on White/Caucasian Americans. Furthermore, the only theoretical guide has been sexual strategies theory. This study fills the gap by using sexual strategies theory and acculturation theory to test Chinese American older adults dating preferences.

The sexual strategies theory discusses how males and females use different mating strategies in short-term and long-term contexts. Acculturation theory describes changes in which individuals or groups adopt another culture when it makes contact with their …

Sensory Experience In Interpersonal Physical Attraction: Cross-Cultural Comparison, Elena Zarubko, Victor Karandashev, Madgerie Jameson-Charles, Stephanie Hutcheson, Jane Carter

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The purpose of the study is to explore the role of visual, auditory, tactile-kinesthetic, and olfactory factors in determining physical attraction to another person in romantic love. Participants from three regions (the USA, Russia, Caribbean countries) completed the survey evaluating the role, which senses play in their attraction to a romantic partner. The questions that were asked were about the importance of the impressions for physical attraction to a partner, rather than the specific physical characteristics, which make a person attractive. Factor analysis identified several factors, which cluster together various sensory experiences, such as expressive behavior, dancing, singing, facial structure, …

Biostatistical Analysis On The Effects Of The Circadian Clock & Glucose Genes On Different Feeding Regimens, Rana Faraj, Nikkhil Velingkaar Jan 2016

Biostatistical Analysis On The Effects Of The Circadian Clock & Glucose Genes On Different Feeding Regimens, Rana Faraj, Nikkhil Velingkaar

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

Circadian clocks are internal biological systems that control many physiological processes. The circadian clock is considered to be the master regulator of metabolism in mammals. The molecular metabolism is not very well known. The circadian clock regulated expression in metabolic enzymes and in turn, diet also regulates circadian clock on a molecular level. To better understand the interaction between circadian clock and metabolism, mice were subjected to different feeding regimens and metabolic tissue, such as liver and skeletal muscles, have been collected across the circadian cycle. Expression of genes have been analyzed in the liver using RT-QPCR. Large set of …

Understanding The Expression And Trafficking Of Plasmodium Falciparum Maurer’S Clefts Proteins, Sophia Degeorgia, Katharine Komisarz, Ashka Patel, Raghavendra Yadavalli

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

Malaria is a potentially fatal disease caused by parasites in the genus Plasmodium. Of the five species that cause human malaria, P. falciparum causes an estimated 1 million deaths annually, particularly in young children in sub-Saharan Africa. Plasmodium falciparum is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. After invasion into human red blood cells, parasite induced transport structures known as Maurer's clefts, are formed within red cells. In previous studies, two Maurer's clefts proteins were identified; an approximately 130 kDa peripheral membrane protein and a 20-kDa integral membrane protein. Immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy identified both proteins …

Effect Of Calorie Restriction On Circadian Rhythms Of Glycolytic Enzymes In Mice, Enas A. Muhammad, Artem Astafev, Kuldeep Makwana Jan 2016

Effect Of Calorie Restriction On Circadian Rhythms Of Glycolytic Enzymes In Mice, Enas A. Muhammad, Artem Astafev, Kuldeep Makwana

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

Multicellular and unicellular organisms have all proven to exhibit circadian rhythms which persist over approximately 24 hours. This internal time keeping system is responsible for regulating the body's biological functions. It has been known that calorie restriction effects circadian rhythms by causing a response in clock gene expression. These clock genes react to food intake and become either upregulated or downregulated accordingly. With glycolysis being a biological pathway that occurs in most organisms, measuring glycolytic gene expression in the liver tissue of young male mice becomes of interest. More specifically, hexokinase, PFK-1, and pyruvate kinase are the enzymes of interest. …

Clinical, Microbiological And Radiographic Comparison Of Two Treatment Strategies Of Peri-Implantitis, Genevieve Payne Jan 2016

Clinical, Microbiological And Radiographic Comparison Of Two Treatment Strategies Of Peri-Implantitis, Genevieve Payne

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Dental implants have revolutionized the world of dentistry since their discovery by Branemark (5). Millions of dental implants are being placed in the United States every year. Dental implants are the best option for many people to replace missing teeth in a predictable fashion. In spite of the high success and survival rates of dental implants, complications and failures can occur. Peri-implantitis generates an inflammatory response that involves both soft tissue inflammation and progressive loss of supporting bone beyond biologic remodelling (AAP consensus paper 2013 (2)). A recent meta-analysis by Decks in 2016 (13) reported the prevalence of peri-implantitis to …

Lineage-Specific Differences In The Gp120 Inner Domain Layer 3 Of Human And Simian Immunodeficiency Viruses, Shilei Ding, Halima Medjahed, Jérémie Prévost, Mathieu Coutu, Shi-Hua Xiang, Andrés Finzi

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Binding of HIV-1 and SIV gp120 exterior envelope glycoprotein to CD4 triggers conformational changes in gp120 that promote its interaction with one of the chemokine receptors, usually CCR5, ultimately leading to gp41-mediated virus-cell membrane fusion and entry. We previously described that topological Layers (Layer 1, Layer 2 and Layer 3) in the gp120 inner domain contribute to gp120-trimer association in the unliganded state but also help secure CD4 binding. Relative to Layer 1 of HIV-1 gp120, the SIVmac239 gp120 Layer 1 plays a more prominent role in maintaining gp120-trimer association but is minimally involved in promoting CD4 binding, which could …

Lazer: Distributed Memory-Efficient Assembly Of Large-Scale Genomes, Sayan Goswami, Arghya Kusum Das, Richard Platania, Kisung Lee, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Genome sequencing technology has witnessed tremendous progress in terms of throughput as well as cost per base pair, resulting in an explosion in the size of data. Consequently, typical sequence assembly tools demand a lot of processing power and memory and are unable to assemble big datasets unless run on hundreds of nodes. In this paper, we present a distributed assembler that achieves both scalability and memory efficiency by using partitioned de Bruijn graphs. By enhancing the memory-to-disk swapping and reducing the network communication in the cluster, we can assemble large sequences such as human genomes (452 GB) on just …

Ring Closures And The Hammond Postulate, Charles A. Kingsbury Jan 2016

Ring Closures And The Hammond Postulate, Charles A. Kingsbury

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

This work reports an investigation of ring closure processes in relation to the Hammond postulate. Calculations favor the importance of thermodynamics, not kinetics, as the basis for the Hammond postulate. A kinetically rapid, but thermodynamically unfavorable reaction is shown to resemble product. The ease of ring closure to three-membered rings, compared to four-membered rings, is thought to be associated with conformational mobility and perhaps vibrations coupled to the reaction coordinate motion in the case of four-membered rings.

Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) are required for initial ice crystal formation in clouds at temperatures warmer than about -36°C and thus play a crucial role in cloud and precipitation formation. Biomass burning has been found to be a source of INPs in previous studies and is also a major contributor to atmospheric black carbon (BC) concentrations. This study focuses on isolating the BC contribution to the INP population associated with biomass combustion. Emissions of condensation mode INPs from a number of globally relevant biomass fuels were measured at -30°C and above water saturation as fires progressed from ignition to extinguishment in …

Combining field and laboratory results, we present biomass smoke physical properties. We report sub-0.56 µm diameter (Dp) particle sizing (fast mobility particle sizer, FMPS) plus light absorption and scattering at 870nm (photoacoustic extinctiometer). For Dp<200 >nm, the FMPS characterized sizing within ±20% compared to standards. As compared to the traditional scanning mobility particle sizer, the FMPS responded most accurately to single-mode polydispersions with mean Dp<200 >nm, which characterized the smoke sampled here. Smoke was measured from laboratory fresh emissions (seconds to hours old), the High Park Fire (hours to<1 >day), and from regional biomass burning (several days). During a High …

Record blazes swept across parts of the US in 2015, burning more than 10 million acres. The four biggest fire seasons since 1960 have all occurred in the last 10 years, leading to fears of a ‘new normal’ for wildfire. Fire fighters and forest managers are overwhelmed, and it is clear that the policy and management approaches of the past will not suffice under this new era of western wildfires. In recent decades, state and federal policymakers, tribes, and others are confronting longer fire seasons (Jolly et al. 2015), more large fires (Dennison et al. 2014), a tripling of homes …

The Intervening Sequence Of Coxiella Burnetii: Characterization And Evolution, Indu Warrier, Mathias C. Walter, Dimitrios Frangoulidis, Rahul Raghavan, Linda D. Hicks, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The intervening sequence (IVS) of Coxiella burnetii, the agent of Q fever, is a 428-nt selfish genetic element located in helix 45 of the precursor 23S rRNA. The IVS element, in turn, contains an ORF that encodes a hypothetical ribosomal S23 protein (S23p). Although S23p can be synthesized in vitro in the presence of an engineered E. coli promoter and ribosome binding site, results suggest that the protein is not synthesized in vivo. In spite of a high degree of IVS conservation among different strains of C. burnetii, the region immediately upstream of the S23p start codon is prone to …

The Limits Of Human Flourishing: Reconstructing Theological Anthropology In Light Of Cognitive Disability, David N. Scott Jan 2016

The Limits Of Human Flourishing: Reconstructing Theological Anthropology In Light Of Cognitive Disability, David N. Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concept of human flourishing currently holds a position of prominence within Christian theology. Numerous theologies assert that a person enjoys the fullness of humanity, not through conformity to an essential nature, but through being a living demonstration of what human being can become. This approach to theological anthropology has proven especially useful for advocacy on behalf of marginalized groups. Nevertheless, because this approach identifies human being with the capacity for purposive agency, it remains incapable of affirming the full humanity of persons with profound cognitive disabilities. These persons lack abilities that purposive agency presupposes, such as self-representation, language, and …

The Spatial Distribution Of Terrestrial Stable Carbon Isotopes In North America, And The Impacts Of Spatial And Temporal Resolution On Static Ecological Models, Sydney M. Firmin Jan 2016

The Spatial Distribution Of Terrestrial Stable Carbon Isotopes In North America, And The Impacts Of Spatial And Temporal Resolution On Static Ecological Models, Sydney M. Firmin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the unique spatial and temporal characteristics of ecological phenomena, the extent and grain size of spatial data sets essentially filter the observations. This thesis examines the impacts of temporal and spatial resolution on the modeling of terrestrial stable carbon isotopic landscapes (isoscapes). I model the distribution of leaf stable carbon isotope composition (delta13C) for the continent of North America at multiple temporal and spatial resolutions. I generate each delta13C isoscape variation by first predicting the relative abundance of C3/C4 vegetation cover using monthly climate grids, crop distribution/type grids, and remote sensing data of plant …
