Evaluating A New Cem Iii/A Cement For Concretes Exposed To Harsh Acid Rich Environments, David Thompson, Niall Holmes, John Reddy Jan 2016

Evaluating A New Cem Iii/A Cement For Concretes Exposed To Harsh Acid Rich Environments, David Thompson, Niall Holmes, John Reddy

Conference papers

The Irish Annex to the European specification, performance, production and conformity of concrete, IS EN 206, recommends CEM III/B cement for acid rich environments containing between 66 to 80% GGBS. However, BS 8500, the UK annex to EN 206 and the British Research Establishment (BRE) Special Digest 1, recommends CEM III/A cement with a GGBS range of 36-65%. This project investigated the performance of a new CEM III/A cement produced by Ecocem Ireland in concretes exposed to such environments using an extensive suite of laboratory tests.

In Ireland, up to €5.8bn will be invested to provide fresh drinking water and …

Animals & Ethics 101: Thinking Critically About Animal Rights, Nathan Nobis Jan 2016

Animals & Ethics 101: Thinking Critically About Animal Rights, Nathan Nobis

Moral Standing and Animal Rights Collection

This book provides an overview of the current debates about the nature and extent of our moral obligations to animals. Which, if any, uses of animals are morally wrong, which are morally permissible (i.e., not wrong) and why? What, if any, moral obligations do we, individually and as a society (and a global community), have towards animals and why? How should animals be treated? Why? We will explore the most influential and most developed answers to these questions – given by philosophers, scientists, and animal advocates and their critics – to try to determine which positions are supported by the …

Jagadish Chandra Bose And Vedantic Science, C. Mackenzie Brown

Religion Faculty Research

'The real is one: wise men call it variously.' Utilizing this celebrated declaration of the Rig Veda as an epigraph in his first scientific monograph, Response in the Living and Non-Living, (1902), the audacious Indian physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858-1937) intimated to the Western scientific world that his electrographic discovery of the unity of life - that the animate and the inanimate world are one - was an affirmation of the insights of the ancient Vedic seers.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Interceptory fisheries represent an ongoing threat to migratory fish stocks particularly when managed in the absence of stock specific catch and exploitation information. Atlantic salmon from the southern portion of the North American range may be subject to exploitation in the commercial and recreational salmon fisheries occurring in the French territorial waters surrounding St. Pierre and Miquelon off southern Newfoundland. We evaluated stock composition of Atlantic salmon harvested in the St. Pierreand Miquelon Atlantic salmon fishery using genetic mixture analysis and individual assignment with a microsatellite baseline (15 loci, 12,409 individuals, 12 regional groups) encompassing the species western Atlantic range. …

The Effect Of Wind Direction On Cross-Shelf Transport On An Initially Stratified Inner Shelf, Rachel M. Horwitz, Steven J. Lentz Jan 2016

The Effect Of Wind Direction On Cross-Shelf Transport On An Initially Stratified Inner Shelf, Rachel M. Horwitz, Steven J. Lentz

Journal of Marine Research

Cross-shelf and along-shelf wind stresses both independently have been shown to drive transport across the inner shelf. We investigate how the circulation and density fields respond to simultaneous cross- and along-shelf wind forcing using a set of model experiments on an initially stratified inner shelf. For all wind directions with a downwelling along-shelf component, the inner shelf is unstratified and the cross-shelf wind dominates transport. For wind directions with an upwelling along-shelf component, the inner shelf can be stratified and the transition from inner to midshelf occurs over a wide swath of shelf. In this transition region, the effects of …

Vorticity Dynamics Near Sharp Topographic Features, Bruno Deremble, William K. Dewar, Eric P. Chassignet Jan 2016

Vorticity Dynamics Near Sharp Topographic Features, Bruno Deremble, William K. Dewar, Eric P. Chassignet

Journal of Marine Research

In ocean models, the interaction with boundaries is often parameterized as it involves small-scale processes that are usually hard to capture in a large-scale model. However, such interactions can play important roles in the model dynamics. For example, the choice of boundary conditions (free-slip vs. no-slip) has a direct impact on the vorticity (enstrophy) budget: with no-slip boundary conditions, vorticity is injected into the system, whereas with free-slip boundary conditions, there should be no vorticity injection as long as the coastline is smooth. However, we show here that at boundary singularities (e.g., corners), vorticity is injected into the domain even …

Modified Extracorporeal Photopheresis As An Immunotherapy In Murine Melanoma, Aaron Nathaniel Vassall Jan 2016

Modified Extracorporeal Photopheresis As An Immunotherapy In Murine Melanoma, Aaron Nathaniel Vassall

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Extracorporeal Photochemotherapy (ECP) is a widely used immunotherapy for cutaneous T cell lymphoma, as well as an immunomodulatory treatment for graft versus host disease (GVHD) and rejection of allografts. We hypothesized that ECP’s physiologic induction of large-scale monocyte-to-dendritic antigen presenting cell (APC) conversion is mechanistically responsible for both its anti-cancer effect and its tolerogenic impact in the transplant setting. To interrogate this possibility in an experimental system, we developed an ECP device that is scalable from mouse to man and tested its capacity to produce APCs that, when advantageously tuned and tumor antigen-loaded, can limit the growth of otherwise lethal …

Almost forty years ago, Kenneth and Irene Eubanks came to Edinburg to settle in what would be their final resting place after decades of traveling the world. After a successful professional career as an agricultural economist, a professor and a high-level official for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Kenneth Eubanks found the perfect location to literally "plant roots" with his family in a place referred to as the Magic Valley of Texas. The research conducted for this book represents historical, archaeological, geological and biological data that will forever be preserved within this volume collection of human-land interactions …

Among the early arrivals to the town of Edinburg was the Bair family of College Springs, Iowa. In 1920 they joined others, including the Heacocks who had arrived in 1913 and made the Rio Grande Valley their home. The families who were bonded together in the marriage of Dorothy Heacock and Lee Martin Bair were entrepreneurs in retail hardware and agriculture. They experienced droughts, hurricanes, and freezes with their attendant economic shortcomings which changed and often shortened lives. Their son Dwayne Bair would lead a life that included farming, citrus production, and banking. This is his story but also one …

Vision And Bioluminescence In The Deep-Sea Benthos, Tamara M. Frank, Sonke Johnsen, Heather D. Bracken-Grissom, Charles Messing, Edith A. Widder

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

During a NOAA-OER funded research cruise, novel collecting techniques were used to collect live, deep-sea benthic animals for studies of bioluminescence and vision. True color images and emission spectra of bioluminescence were obtained from a number of species, including the spiral octocoral Iridogorgia sp., the sea fan Chrysogorgia sp., the sea pen Umbellula sp., and the caridean shrimp Heterocarpusoryx. Electrophysiological studies were conducted on 3 species of decapod crustaceans collected with methods that limited light damage to their photoreceptors. The caridean shrimp, Bathypalaemonella, collected from 1920m, was always found in association with the bioluminescent spiral octocoral Iridogorgia. While …

The Associations Of Selected Lifestyle Patterns And Lung Cancer Risk: An Evidence-Based Update, Joanna Kruk, Basil H. Aboul-Enein Jan 2016

The Associations Of Selected Lifestyle Patterns And Lung Cancer Risk: An Evidence-Based Update, Joanna Kruk, Basil H. Aboul-Enein

Health & Wellness Department Faculty Publications and Research

Diagnosis of lung cancer (LC) has been fraught with difficulty and by the time of definitive diagnosis, most patients are in later stages of the disease. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that lifestyle behaviors play an etiological role in LC risk; however data in the literature on this topic often appears inconclusive or require further study. Understanding of the mechanisms operating between lifestyle patterns and their impact on LC is important for the disease’s prevention and treatment. The purpose of this study was to review the current evidence on the role of diet, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, smoking, alcohol …

Course-based research experiences (CREs) are powerful strategies for spreading learning and improving persistence for all students, both science majors and nonscience majors. Here we address the crucial components of CREs (context, discovery, ownership, iteration, communication, presentation) found across a broad range of such courses at a variety of academic institutions. We also address how the design of a CRE should vary according to the background of student participants; no single CRE format is perfect. We provide a framework for implementing CREs across multiple institutional types and several disciplines throughout the typical four years of undergraduate work, designed to a variety …

Energy-Conserving Numerical Scheme For The Poisson-Nerst-Plank Equations, Julienne Kabre Jan 2016

Energy-Conserving Numerical Scheme For The Poisson-Nerst-Plank Equations, Julienne Kabre

Mathematics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Preliminary report.
The Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describe flow of charged particles in solution. In particular, we are interested in the transport of ions in the biological membrane proteins (ion channels). This work is about the design of numerical schemes that preserve exactly (up to roundoff error) a discretized form of the energy dynamics of the system. We will present a scheme that achieves the goal of preserving the energy dissipation law and some preliminary numerical results.

The Free Blacks Of Virginia: A Personal Narrative, A Legal Construct, Sherri L. Burr Jan 2016

The Free Blacks Of Virginia: A Personal Narrative, A Legal Construct, Sherri L. Burr

Faculty Scholarship

The existence of the Free Blacks of Virginia as a group in United States history would surprise most Americans. The common narrative is that all Africans were brought to this country as slaves with no rights, and systematically received legal privileges after the Civil War in the 1860s and the Civil Rights struggle a century later. The reality differs from this assumption. The first Africans who landed on the shores of Virginia in 1619 began their lives as indentured servants similar to many European immigrants. After finishing their terms of service, these Africans were accorded liberties such as the right …

Ultra-Wideband Radar Based Human Motion Analysis, Zhichong Zhou Jan 2016

Ultra-Wideband Radar Based Human Motion Analysis, Zhichong Zhou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes and investigates two techniques in ultra-wideband (UWB) radar based human motion analysis. The first one is accurate human body landmark detection using UWB radars. The detection is achieved by moving target indication (MTI) and constant false alarm rate detection (CFAR). A new CFAR detection technique is proposed, namely the out-of-band (OB) CFAR detection. In the field experiment, two RF reflective markers are attached to the wrist and elbow of one human arm for reflecting radar signals. It is demonstrated that detection of two markers are feasible and successfully achieved. And our results suggests the OB-CFAR performs better …
