An Analysis Of Particulate Matter In Central Virginia, Elizabeth Garrett, Arif Sikder
An Analysis Of Particulate Matter In Central Virginia, Elizabeth Garrett, Arif Sikder
Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium
Virginia is consistently rated as a state with high rates of asthma (Asthma and Allergy Foundation 2014). Although this respiratory disease has many causes, certain air pollutants can be a trigger. The EPA currently identifies, monitors, and regulates seven types of air pollutants. One of these pollutants, particulate matter, can occur both naturally and culturally. The primary anthropogenic cause of particulate matter is fly ash, which is formed during fossil fuel combustion. Different technology installed in the power plant can capture some of the fly ash but these methods are not entirely effective.
This study focused on estimating the ratio …
Assessing How Disruption Of Methanogenic Communities And Their Syntrophic Relationships In Tidal Freshwater Marshes Via Saltwater Intrusion May Affect Ch4 Emissions, David J. Berrier, Scott C. Neubauer, Rima B. Franklin
Assessing How Disruption Of Methanogenic Communities And Their Syntrophic Relationships In Tidal Freshwater Marshes Via Saltwater Intrusion May Affect Ch4 Emissions, David J. Berrier, Scott C. Neubauer, Rima B. Franklin
Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium
Tidal freshwater wetlands (TFW), which lie at the interface of saltwater and freshwater ecosystems, are predicted to experience moderate salinity increases due to sea level rise. Increases in salinity generally suppress CH4 production, but it is uncertain to what extent elevated salinity will affect CH4 cycling in TFW. It is also unknown whether CH4 production will resume when freshwater conditions return. The ability to produce CH4 is limited to a monophyletic group of the Euryarchaeota phylum called methanogens (MG), who are limited to a small number of substrates (e.g., acetate, H2, and formate) produced from the breakdown of fermentation products. …

We live in an era of learning convergence in which both the digital and the physical play critical roles (Leander & Hollett, 2013). In these hybrid spaces, boundaries are permeable and students are simultaneously involved in many settings; communications and other forms of digital and physical production alternate between the virtual and the physical rather than residing in one. This means that teaching and learning must address the issue of learning convergence. Meanwhile, research indicates that preparing prospective teachers to be proficient in digital technologies in order to use them to meet the needs of 21st-century learners continues to be …

Mutsun-English English-Mutsun Dictionary / Mutsun-Inkis Inkis-Mutsun Riica Pappel, Natasha Warner, Lynnika Butler, Quirina Geary
Mutsun Text Collection: mutsun riicakma hummen
Mutsun is a Costanoan language (part of the Utian language family) from California in the area around the modern towns of San Juan Bautista, Hollister, and Gilroy. The last fluent speaker of Mutsun, Mrs. Ascension Solarsano, died in 1930. Because of her work and the work of earlier native Mutsun speakers with early linguists, there is a large written corpus of Mutsun. This dictionary was compiled by analyzing that documentation. The dictionary is written to be useful both for language revitalization and for linguistic research. This PDF was downloaded from the Language Documentation & Conservation journal website at the request …
A Culture Shaped By Immigrants: Examining The Consequences Of U.S. Immigration Policy, Roger White, Shane Francis
A Culture Shaped By Immigrants: Examining The Consequences Of U.S. Immigration Policy, Roger White, Shane Francis
Economics
We examine U.S. immigration history both by recounting the related legislative history and by examining data on immigrant inflows and inflow shares during the period from 1820 through 2013. A descriptive analysis of the cultural differences between the U.S. and several cohorts of countries suggests that U.S. culture has been shaped by the pattern of immigrant arrivals. Broadly stated, American culture has evolved to be similar to those of European societies (predominantly, countries in Northern and Western Europe) and to largely be dissimilar to the cultures of other regions. Following the enactment of the Hart-Celler Act in 1968, the primary …

Influence Of Academic Self-Efficacy On The Early Academic Success Of Underrepresented Minority Nursing Students Enrolled In The First Semester Of A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Connie Hataway
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The identification of reliable predictors of early academic achievement is imperative for the retention and graduation of all nursing students, and particularly underrepresented minority (URM) students. Students with a high sense of academic self-efficacy exhibit greater persistence and interest in their academic performance, a premise that led to this investigation of self-efficacy as a variable affecting early academic success among baccalaureate nursing students. The purpose of this study was to (a) to determine if a significant relationship existed between academic self-efficacy and successful progression for first semester baccalaureate nursing students in general and URM students specifically, (b) determine the predictive …

Comparison Of Resistance To Sliding Between Brackets And Archwires Utilizing Various Ligature Materials, Jagdesh Dudani
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between ligature material and frictional force created during orthodontic cuspid retraction. Maximum static and mean kinetic frictional resistance between conventional metallic orthodontic appliances and esthetic orthodontic appliances will be compared as well. Background: The use of ceramic brackets in conjunction with coated archwires and ligatures as an alternative to conventional stainless steel appliances has increased in response to the demand for more esthetic orthodontic appliances. Esthetic appliances are associated with increased frictional forces and therefore thought to slow the orthodontic treatment. Knowledge of frictional forces generated within various orthodontic …

Memory Performance In Children With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: Neocortical Vs. Dual Pathologies, Brandon M. Korman
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated memory in children with temporal lobe epilepsy and the ability to discern hippocampal dysfunction with conventional memory tests that are typically used to detect more global memory impairment. All data was obtained retrospectively from the epilepsy surgery program at a local children’s hospital. The research population consisted of 54 children with intractable epilepsy of temporal onset, balanced across pathology types (with and without hippocampal disease) and other demographics. Each was given a clinical battery prior to surgical intervention, which included the WRAML/WRAML2 Verbal Learning subtest from which the dependent variables for this study were extracted. The research …
Toward A Model Of 12-Step Engagement: Predicting Recovery Involvement In Narcotics Anonymous, Hillary L. Howrey
Toward A Model Of 12-Step Engagement: Predicting Recovery Involvement In Narcotics Anonymous, Hillary L. Howrey
Theses and Dissertations
Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect a significant portion of the population and are noteworthy public health concerns. Mutual help organizations (MHOs) such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are considered evidence-based practices for SUDs. Despite a growing body of research examining mechanisms of change in MHOs, relatively few investigations of 12-step organizations have been theory-driven. Theory-based models of recovery provide a more comprehensive view of the range of individual factors affecting individuals in recovery and how and why they might engage in recovery-related behaviors. Stress and coping theory fills a gap in explaining how improvements occur as a result of …

Cultural Resources Monitoring: Archaeological Montioring Of Hand Excavated Trenches San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, David M. Yelacic
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
To assist and support the installation of fiber-optic cable in the particularly sensitive and historic Downtown San Antonio, Texas, Terracon carried out archaeological monitoring of two small, hand-excavated trenches in City of San Antonio sidewalk easements. The undertaking is subject to compliance with the Antiquities Code of Texas and oversight from the Texas Historical Commission. Archaeological monitoring was carried out by David Yelacic, Principal Investigator, under Texas Antiquities Permit Number 7203.
Through the course of monitored excavation, very few cultural materials were encountered, and these materials (i.e., clear glass fragment, brown bottle glass fragment, wood, and rusted metal) were not …

Multidrug resistant infections and superinfections are increasing globally. Intrinsic and acquired resistance to multiple antibiotics by bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae family exasperate treatment efforts by clinicians. Carbapenem antibiotics were once relied upon to treat multidrug resistant infections. However, Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections are becoming more common, requiring that an alternative treatment be found. This study trialed an ancient cure, Fresh Garlic Extract (FGE) created from garlic (Allium sativum L.) and commercially prepared garlic pills against two opportunistic Enterobacteriaceae in vitro utilizing: disc diffusion, well diffusion (introducing DIFF-bolts), and HPLC. FGE and four brands of garlic pills inhibited the growth …

The “Measured Annual Nutrient loads from AGricultural Environments” (MANAGE) database was published in 2006 to expand an early 1980s compilation of nutrient export (load) data from cultivated and pasture/range land at the field or farm scale. Then in 2008, MANAGE was updated with 15 additional studies, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations in runoff were added. Since then, MANAGE has undergone significant expansion adding N and P water quality along with relevant management and site characteristic data from: (1) 30 runoff studies from forested land uses, (2) 91 drainage water quality studies from drained land, and (3) 12 additional …
