Redescription Of Androctonus Bicolor Ehrenberg, 1828, And Description Of Androctonus Turieli Sp. N. From Tunisia (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík

Euscorpius

We redescribe Androctonus bicolor Ehrenberg, 1828, a scorpion species widely distributed across northeast Africa and the Middle East, on the basis of the study of nine original syntypes and supplementary material from its entire distribution area. In order to stabilize nomenclature, we also designate a lectotype, update its diagnosis according to modern standards, and provide a full illustrated complement to facilitate the recognition of this species as compared to all of its congeners. Also, a new, closely related species from eastern Tunisia is described.

Structural Insights Into High Density Lipoprotein: Old Models And New Facts, Valentin Gogonea

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The physiological link between circulating high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels and cardiovascular disease is well-documented, albeit its intricacies are not well-understood. An improved appreciation of HDL function and overall role in vascular health and disease requires at its foundation a better understanding of the lipoprotein's molecular structure, its formation, and its process of maturation through interactions with various plasma enzymes and cell receptors that intervene along the pathway of reverse cholesterol transport. This review focuses on summarizing recent developments in the field of lipid free apoA-I and HDL structure, with emphasis on new insights revealed by newly published nascent and …

Membrane Glycerolipidome Of Soybean Root Hairs And Its Response To Nitrogen And Phosphate Availability, Fang Wei, Brian Fanella, Liang Guo, Xuemin Wang

Biology Department Faculty Works

Root hairs are tubular extensions of specific root epidermal cells important in plant nutrition and water absorption. To determine membrane glycerolipids in root hairs and roots may differ, as well as their respective response to nutrient availability, this study analyzed the membrane glycerolipid species in soybean root hairs and in roots stripped of root hairs, and their response to nitrogen (N) and phosphate (Pi) supplementation. The ratio of phospholipids to galactolipids was 1.5 fold higher in root hairs than in stripped roots. Under Pi deficiency, the ratio of phospholipids to galactolipids in stripped roots decreased with the greatest decrease found …

A Bacterial Effector Co-Opts Calmodulin To Target The Plant Microtubule Network, Ming Guo, Panya Kim, Guangyong Li, Christian Elowsky, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae depends on effector proteins secreted by its type III secretion system for the pathogenesis of plants. The majority of these effector proteins are known suppressors of immunity, but their plant targets remain elusive. Using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model host, we report that the HopE1 effector uses the host calcium sensor, calmodulin (CaM), as a co-factor to target the microtubule- associated protein 65 (MAP65), an important component of the microtubule network. HopE1 interacted with MAP65 in a CaMdependent manner, resulting in MAP65-GFP dissociation from microtubules. Transgenic Arabidopsis expressing HopE1 had reduced secretion of the immunity …

Spike Processing With A Graphene Excitable Laser., Bhavin J Shastri, Mitchell A Nahmias, Alexander N Tait, Alejandro W Rodriguez, Ben Wu, Paul R Prucnal

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Novel materials and devices in photonics have the potential to revolutionize optical information processing, beyond conventional binary-logic approaches. Laser systems offer a rich repertoire of useful dynamical behaviors, including the excitable dynamics also found in the time-resolved "spiking" of neurons. Spiking reconciles the expressiveness and efficiency of analog processing with the robustness and scalability of digital processing. We demonstrate a unified platform for spike processing with a graphene-coupled laser system. We show that this platform can simultaneously exhibit logic-level restoration, cascadability and input-output isolation--fundamental challenges in optical information processing. We also implement low-level spike-processing tasks that are critical for higher …

Long-Term Recovery From Acute Cold Shock In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Joseph D. Robinson, Jennifer R. Powell Jan 2016

Long-Term Recovery From Acute Cold Shock In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Joseph D. Robinson, Jennifer R. Powell

Biology Faculty Publications

Background

Animals are exposed to a wide range of environmental stresses that can cause potentially fatal cellular damage. The ability to survive the period of stress as well as to repair any damage incurred is essential for fitness. Exposure to 2 °C for 24 h or longer is rapidly fatal to the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, but the process of recovery from a shorter, initially non-lethal, cold shock is poorly understood.

Results

We report that cold shock of less than 12-hour duration does not initially kill C. elegans, but these worms experience a progression of devastating phenotypes over the …

Hypoacetylation, Hypomethylation, And Dephosphorylation Of H2b Histones And Excessive Histone Deacetylase Activity In Du-145 Prostate Cancer Cells, Shundong Cang, Xiaobin Xu, Yuehua Ma, Delong Liu, J W. Chiao

NYMC Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Hypoacetylation on histone H3 of human prostate cancer cells has been described. Little is known about the modifications of other histones from prostate cancer cells. METHODS: Histones were isolated from the prostate cancer cell line DU-145 and the non-malignant prostatic cell line RC170N/h. Post-translational modifications of histone H2B were determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)/MS. RESULTS: The histone H2B of the prostate cancer cell line DU-145 was found to have hypoacetylation, hypomethylation, and dephosphorylation as compared to the non-malignant prostatic cell line RC170N/h. H2B regained acetylation on multiple lysine residues, phosphorylation on Thr19, and methylation on Lys23 and Lys43 …

Surfactant-Associated Bacteria In The Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean, Naoko Kurata, Katie E. Vella, Bryan Hamilton, Mahmood S. Shivji, Alexander Soloviev, Silvia Matt, Aurelien Tartar, William Perrie

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Certain marine bacteria found in the near-surface layer of the ocean are expected to play important roles in the production and decay of surface active materials; however, the details of these processes are still unclear. Here we provide evidence supporting connection between the presence of surfactant-associated bacteria in the near-surface layer of the ocean, slicks on the sea surface, and a distinctive feature in the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery of the sea surface. From DNA analyses of the in situ samples using pyrosequencing technology, we found the highest abundance of surfactant-associated bacterial taxa in the near-surface layer below the …

In recent years, coral reefs worldwide have suffered high mortality rates due to coral bleaching, a phenomenon contributing to a 40% decrease in coral cover in the Florida Keys since the 1997/98 El Niño event. In the Florida Keys, coral from inshore reefs are known to be more thermotolerant than their conspecifics from offshore reefs but the mechanism behind this difference is unclear. In this study we conducted a two-year, reciprocal transplant of Porites astreoides and Montastraea cavernosa from an inshore and offshore reef in the lower Florida Keys to determine if changes in the dominant symbiotic algae (Symbiodinium …
