Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

FGF23 is a novel phosphaturic hormone; we aimed to assess the FGF23 levels and its association with dietary phosphate intake and indices of renal handling of phosphate in this study. Prospective study was conducted in which dietary phosphate intake was assessed by food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) along with blood and spot urine samples were collected after overnight fast for determining serum phosphate, FGF23, fractional excretion of phosphate (FePO4 ) and tubular maximum for phosphate (TmP/GFR). FGF23 (C-Term) was measured by a sandwich ELISA. The mean dietary phosphate intake of eighty healthy adults (mean age of 29 ± 5 years) was …

Heterogeneity In The Preferences And Pro-Environmental Behavior Of College Students: The Effects Of Years On Campus, Demographics, And External Factors, Andrew G. Meyer Jan 2016

Heterogeneity In The Preferences And Pro-Environmental Behavior Of College Students: The Effects Of Years On Campus, Demographics, And External Factors, Andrew G. Meyer

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Models from several social science fields have identified factors that lead to pro-environmental behavior. This research builds on those models by analyzing a survey completed by over 500 undergraduates at a US liberal arts university to examine the characteristics of students that are associated with more environmentally friendly behavior and quantify the desirability of different environmental initiatives. There is evidence that the probability of pro-environmental behavior substantially increases with each additional year that a student spends on campus. The magnitude of the effect is between 4 and 10 percentage points per year, depending on the specific behavior and empirical model. …

Historical Consequence Of The Misinterpretation Of The Doctrine Of Election, Thomas Glenn Sleeth Jan 2016

Historical Consequence Of The Misinterpretation Of The Doctrine Of Election, Thomas Glenn Sleeth

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

The goal of this research was to demonstrate how Scripture has been misrepresented throughout the centuries and utilized as a specific tool to enable nations and empires with more sophisticated technological backgrounds to exploit developing cultures and relegate them to a position of inferiority. Specifically, the misinterpretation of the Doctrine of Election has been a principle motivating factor and justification to conquer indigenous groups and subjugate populations under the guise of proselytization. Colonization, Imperialism, Slavery and nation-sanctioned discrimination have all occurred under the self-righteous banner of performing God’s will. Biblical principle and doctrine neither advocate nor condone any of the …

Refracting The Male Gaze: Mary Cassatt’S Ocularcentric Message Of Female Agency, Chloe N. Shields Jan 2016

Refracting The Male Gaze: Mary Cassatt’S Ocularcentric Message Of Female Agency, Chloe N. Shields

Quercus: Linfield Journal of Undergraduate Research

Through analysis of ocularcentric (vision-privileged) messages in Mary Cassatt’s Reading Le Figaro (1878), I argue the portrait represents a strong early-career interest in countering gender hegemony that is largely unmatched in the artist’s later work. Reading the painting as a reaction to decreased autonomy following a consolidation of family living spaces, the present paper satisfies a dearth in Cassatt scholarship by addressing a yet-undiscussed motif of vision in Cassatt’s painting: the mirror. In a complete subversion of classic vanitas paintings, Cassatt alters the woman-and-mirror trope to emphasize her subject’s desire for an identity of female mind over female body. Defying …

Rhythms Of Locomotion And Seasonal Changes In Activity Expressed By Horseshoe Crabs In Their Natural Habitat, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Suzanne K. Johnson, Colin D. Whitworth, Christopher C. Chabot

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The American horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus expresses both tidal and daily rhythms of locomotion in the laboratory and the tidal rhythms can be entrained to artificial tides. The main purpose of this study was to determine the types of rhythms horseshoe crabs express when freely moving in their natural habitat where they are exposed to natural light:dark and tidal cycles. A secondary goal was to determine if their overall activity patterns and depth preferences changed during the year. In 2010 and 2011, 20 adult horseshoe crabs (11 males, 9 females) were fitted with ultrasonic tags and released in the Great …

Sediment Supply Versus Local Hydraulic Controls On Sediment Transport And Storage In A River With Large Sediment Loads, David J. Dean, David J. Topping, John C. Schmidt, Ronald E. Griffiths, Thomas A. Sabol Jan 2016

Sediment Supply Versus Local Hydraulic Controls On Sediment Transport And Storage In A River With Large Sediment Loads, David J. Dean, David J. Topping, John C. Schmidt, Ronald E. Griffiths, Thomas A. Sabol

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The Rio Grande in the Big Bend region of Texas, USA, and Chihuahua and Coahuila, Mexico, undergoes rapid geomorphic changes as a result of its large sediment supply and variable hydrology; thus, it is a useful natural laboratory to investigate the relative importance of flow strength and sediment supply in controlling alluvial channel change. We analyzed a suite of sediment transport and geomorphic data to determine the cumulative influence of different flood types on changing channel form. In this study, physically based analyses suggest that channel change in the Rio Grande is controlled by both changes in flow strength and …

Multimodal, Biomaterial-Focused Anticoagulation Via Superlow Fouling Zwitterionic Functional Groups Coupled With Anti-Platelet Nitric Oxide Release, Kagya Amoako, Harihara S. Sundaram, Ahmed Suhaib, Shaoyi Jiang, Keith E. Cook

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

The functions of anti-fouling, zwitterionic polycarboxybetaine (pCB) and anti-platelet nitric oxide (NO) release replicate key anticoagulant properties of the endothelium. The two approaches, only tested separately thus far, were paired on gas permeable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes and evaluated for anti-coagulation. Uncoated PDMS (control) and PDMS coated with pCB were screened for fibrinogen (Fg) fouling followed by platelet adsorption testing to evaluate the effects of coating and/or NO using bioreactors. Bare or coated PDMS membranes separated sheep plasma (108 platelets/ml) and gas flow chambers within the bioreactors. Either 100 or 0 ppm of NO/N2 flowed through the gas chamber for NO …

Effect Of Green Tea On Interaction Of Lipid Oxidation Products With Sarcoplasmic And Myofibrillar Protein Homogenates Extracted From Bovine Top Round Muscle, Nahathai Stapornkul, Tatiana Prytkova, Lilian Were Jan 2016

Effect Of Green Tea On Interaction Of Lipid Oxidation Products With Sarcoplasmic And Myofibrillar Protein Homogenates Extracted From Bovine Top Round Muscle, Nahathai Stapornkul, Tatiana Prytkova, Lilian Were

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

The interaction between lipid oxidation products and bovine sarcoplasmic (SP) and myofibrillar protein (MP) homogenates in the presence of green tea was investigated. To monitor the effect of green tea on lipid oxidation, aldehydes were measured while effect on protein was monitored via changes in myoglobin, thiols, and tryptophan fluorescence over nine days of refrigerated storage. The presence of SP and MP decreased free aldehydes in the buffers. The SP bound more aldehydes than MP. The tea compounds exhibited more favorable binding energies than aldehydes near histidine 64 close to the heme moiety of myoglobin. Addition of tea lowered tryptophan …

American Marten Denning Behavior In Michigan, Melissa J. Nichols Jan 2016

American Marten Denning Behavior In Michigan, Melissa J. Nichols

Masters Theses

Female American marten (Martes americana) produce litters of 1-5 kits between late March and early May. Kits remain with their mother for the duration of their first summer in a series of den structures. We located these den structures using radio-telemetry and placed remotetriggered cameras at the entrances to capture information on litter size, female activity patterns, and den visits by males and potential predators. From the summer of 2012 to the summer of 2014 we tracked 13 individual female marten (8 in the Lower Peninsula, 5 in the Upper Peninsula) with 17 litters to 75 unique den sites (60 …

Characterization Of 1, 4, 7-Trithiacyclononane, [9]Anes3 As A Potential Toxic Heavy Metal Chelator, Nahid Bakhtari Jan 2016

Characterization Of 1, 4, 7-Trithiacyclononane, [9]Anes3 As A Potential Toxic Heavy Metal Chelator, Nahid Bakhtari

Student Theses and Dissertations

Toxic heavy metal poisoning with metals including lead, mercury, and cadmium, whether in the environment or through ingestion, remains a persistent problem. Remediation of metal contamination and poisoning has generally been treated with chelating agents that bind metals, rendering them inert, and allow for easier removal. Chelation involves the formation of two or more separate coordinate covalent bonds between a polydentate ligand and a single central atom. However, chelators are not without side effects. Due to the similar size of metal ions and lack of specificity of ligands, chelators can also remove beneficial metals like iron and zinc from the …

Overexpression Of Pd2 Leads To Increased Tumorigenicity And Metastasis In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma., Arokia Priyanka Vaz, Shonali Deb, Satyanarayana Rachagani, Parama Dey, Sakthivel Muniyan, Imayavaramban Lakshmanan, Saswati Karmakar, Lynette M. Smith, Sonny L. Johansson, Subodh M. Lele, M Ouellette, Moorthy P. Ponnusamy, Surinder K. Batra

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Pancreatic differentiation 2 (PD2), an important subunit of the human PAF complex, was identified after differential screening analysis of 19q13 amplicon, and its overexpression induces oncogenic transformation of NIH3T3 cells, hence raising the possibility of a role for PD2 in tumorigenesis and metastasis. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed here the functional role and clinical significance of PD2 in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and its pathogenesis. Using immunohistochemical analysis, we found that PD2 is detected in the acini but not in the ducts in the normal pancreas. In human PDAC specimens, PD2 was instead primarily detected in the ducts (12/48 …

Information Fusion For Pattern Classification In Complex Interconnected Systems, Nayeff Najjar Jan 2016

Information Fusion For Pattern Classification In Complex Interconnected Systems, Nayeff Najjar

Doctoral Dissertations

Typical complex interconnected systems consist of several interconnected components with several heterogeneous sensors. Classification problems (e.g., fault diagnosis) in these systems are challenging because sensor data might be of high dimension and/or convey misleading or incomplete information. So, this thesis performs optimal sensor selection and fusion to lower computational complexity and improve classification accuracy. First, the thesis presents the novel Unsupervised Embedded algorithm for optimal sensor selection. The algorithm uses the minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) criterion to select the candidate list of sensors, then uses K-means clustering algorithm and entropy criterion to select the optimal sensors. The Unsupervised Embedded …

The Mechanism Of Homogeneous Hg-Catalyzed Methane Partial Oxidation, Steven Butler, Daniel Ess Jan 2016

The Mechanism Of Homogeneous Hg-Catalyzed Methane Partial Oxidation, Steven Butler, Daniel Ess

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There is now access to vast amounts of inexpensive natural gas, due in part to shale gas discoveries. Abundant natural gas provides significant motivation to develop methods for methane partial oxidation. One major target for methane oxidation is methanol. Natural gas is principally methane, but also includes significant amounts of ethane and propane. Methanol can be produced from natural gas via high-temperature generation of syngas (mixture of H2 and CO).

One Surrogate Birth For Man May Mean Nothing For Mankind, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2016

One Surrogate Birth For Man May Mean Nothing For Mankind, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Media reports abound about a lawsuit filed by a woman in California against a man in Georgia who hired her to carry children for him as a surrogate. Now 20+ weeks pregnant with triplets, the woman has sued to avoid her obligations under the surrogacy agreement, claiming that the agreement is invalid and the statute that enables surrogacy in the state is unconstitutional.

There are some dark aspects to this case, to be sure, and the conflict between the surrogate and the intended father reveals some of the challenges that can plague an ill-considered surrogacy agreement. However, one bad situation …

Network-Based Analysis Of Genetic Variants Associated With Hippocampal Volume In Alzheimer’S Disease: A Study Of Adni Cohorts, Ailin Song, Jingwen Yan, Sungeun Kim, Shannon Leigh Risacher, Aaron K. Wong, Andrew J. Saykin, Li Shen, Casey S. Greene

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that causes dementia. While molecular basis of AD is not fully understood, genetic factors are expected to participate in the development and progression of the disease. Our goal was to uncover novel genetic underpinnings of Alzheimer’s disease with a bioinformatics approach that accounts for tissue specificity.

Findings:

We performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for hippocampal volume in two Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohorts. We used these GWAS in a subsequent tissue-specific network-wide association study (NetWAS), which applied nominally significant associations in the initial GWAS to identify disease relevant patterns in a …
