Happy Days Sinking Into Immanence: Samuel Beckett And The Second Sex, Susan Hennessy Feb 2016

Happy Days Sinking Into Immanence: Samuel Beckett And The Second Sex, Susan Hennessy

Journal of International Women's Studies

Dysfunctional, fragmented, and restricted bodies are a cornerstone of Samuel Beckett’s stage, a place where characters and actors alike find themselves forced to express the inexpressible, with notoriously diminished resources. Historically, existentialist readings of the Beckett canon have offered an insight into works which seem to raise essential questions regarding what it means to be when normative metanarratives have ceased to govern and “realist” escapism is denied. When it comes to discussions of phenomenological existentialism and its proponents, however, the works of Simone de Beauvoir often seem to be eschewed, or assimilated into those of the more famous Jean-Paul Sartre. …

Reproducing The Homonormative Family: Neoliberalism, Queer Theory And Same-Sex Reproductive Law, Eliza Garwood Feb 2016

Reproducing The Homonormative Family: Neoliberalism, Queer Theory And Same-Sex Reproductive Law, Eliza Garwood

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper seeks to highlight the often overlooked interconnectivity of the cultural sphere and the economic sphere, particularly focusing on same-sex reproductive law and neoliberalism. Using The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008, specifically highlighting its implications for same-sex couples, this examination demonstrates the way that policy and legislation frequently echo normative ways of being, encouraging the “good”, productive neoliberal citizen and/or family. This article is informed by Foucault’s notions of governmentality and biopower, problematising this limiting legislation, arguing that it is grounded on an internalised ideal of the traditional family, discouraging more transgressive or creative family formations. Specifically, I …

Composite Nanofibers As Advanced Materials For Li-Ion, Li-O2 And Li-S Batteries, Victor Agubra, Luis Zuniga, David Flores, Jahaziel Villarreal, Mataz Alcoutlabi

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The quest to increase the energy density and improve the cycle life performance of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and beyond has led to the development of various suitable and alternative materials for energy storage and conversion. The morphology and electrode architecture in advanced battery materials have been re-designed into nanofibers and composite nanofibers. Nanofiber-based separators and electrodes have demonstrated to improve the energy density and cycling performance of LIBs. The improvement in the structure and morphology of nanofibers in LIBs such as LiSi and LiSn, have once again ignited the interest in these Li:M alloy anodes as alternative anode and …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Poor stand establishment, failure to recover after grazing, and premature plant death have reduced the utilization of arrowleaf clover (Trifolium vesiculosum Savi) as a forage crop in the southeastern United States in recent years. Clover plants collected from poor stands in east Texas pastures during the 1995 to 1996 and 1996 to 1997 seasons first exhibited root disease symptoms as young seedlings in the fall. Symptoms consisted of one or more of the following: tan discoloration of lateral roots and taproot; root pruning; and small, tan, sunken lesions on the taproot and crown. Many Rhizobium nodules were brown and …

Gender Bending And Bending Gender (Re)Creating Aesthetic Realities Of Organization Practices, Michael E. Reardon, Nikki C. Townsley Feb 2016

Gender Bending And Bending Gender (Re)Creating Aesthetic Realities Of Organization Practices, Michael E. Reardon, Nikki C. Townsley

Speaker & Gavel

The following paper incorporates various writing genres including fiction, narrative, and scholarly discourse to demonstrate the potential importance of aesthetic theory for transforming gendered organizational practices. It starts off with Kelly‘s, a student of organizational communication, ―final exam‖ essay, which explores the gendered politics of promotion. Her professor‘s response explores the gendered politics of ―doing feminism.‖ Taken individually, Kelly and Dr. McGuire (re)create an aesthetic reality of traditional, essentializing organizational practices. Taken together, they (re)create aesthetic meanings that pose formidable challenges and potential transformations for the way we ―do gender‖ organizationally. In the end, this paper or ―petite narrative‖ stands …

Coupling Between Nutrient Availability And Thyroid Hormone Activation, Lattoya Josephine Lartey Feb 2016

Coupling Between Nutrient Availability And Thyroid Hormone Activation, Lattoya Josephine Lartey

Open Access Dissertations

Thyroid hormone is essential for metabolism, growth, development and cognitive function. Thyroid hormone is secreted in two forms, the biologically active 3,5,3’-triiodothyronine (T3) and the inactive thyroxine (T4) that must be converted to T3 in order to gain biological activity. This reaction is catalyzed by type II deiodinase (D2), a thioredoxin-fold containing selenoenzyme; its activity plays an essential role in thyroid hormone activation. The thyroid gland is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. It responds to food availability via leptin induction of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) in the hypothalamus and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in the pituitary. These actions stimulate …

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

The goal of this article is to present a first list of ethical concerns that may arise from research and personal use of virtual reality (VR) and related technology, and to offer concrete recommendations for minimizing those risks. Many of the recommendations call for focused research initiatives. In the first part of the article, we discuss the relevant evidence from psychology that motivates our concerns. In Section “Plasticity in the Human Mind,” we cover some of the main results suggesting that one’s environment can influence one’s psychological states, as well as recent work on inducing illusions of embodiment. Then, in …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Macrophage activation/polarization to distinct functional states is critically supported by metabolic shifts. How polarizing signals coordinate metabolic and functional reprogramming, and the potential implications for control of macrophage activation, remains poorly understood. Here we show that IL-4 signaling co-opts the Akt-mTORC1 pathway to regulate Acly, a key enzyme in Ac-CoA synthesis, leading to increased histone acetylation and M2 gene induction. Only a subset of M2 genes is controlled in this way, including those regulating cellular proliferation and chemokine production. Moreover, metabolic signals impinge on the Akt-mTORC1 axis for such control of M2 activation. We propose that Akt-mTORC1 signaling calibrates metabolic …
