Work And Life Integration: Faculty Balance In The Academy, Holly Ehrens May 2016

Work And Life Integration: Faculty Balance In The Academy, Holly Ehrens

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Faculty work life integration has evolved as an important area of research in the academic workplace. The evolution in thinking about faculty work life integration has progressively shifted focus from the problems of women and parents to research that considers both men and women, married and single, with or without children as participants in the quest to integrate both personal and professional lives.

Though many studies still include the challenges faced by parents and this study is no exception, a more recent focus includes the influence of work group norms and social dynamics in shaping the experiences of faculty in …

Gamma Aapeptides As Host Defense Peptide Mimics, Yaqiong Li May 2016

Gamma Aapeptides As Host Defense Peptide Mimics, Yaqiong Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There has been increasing concern regarding the emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens. The resistance develops when pathogens, especially bacteria, are frequently exposed to conventional antibiotics, as they are heavily used in both human and livestock. This is due to the high target specificity of conventional antibiotics, which places pathogens in high selective pressures and eventually results in drug resistant by mutations. To address this issue, global actions and cooperation are needed. At the same time, new technologies and strategies need to be developed. Host defense peptides (HDPs) are widely found in the innate immune system. They show both direct antimicrobial …

Cone In Cone Concretions Of The Stanley Group In Southeastern Oklahoma, Kyle B. Ayres May 2016

Cone In Cone Concretions Of The Stanley Group In Southeastern Oklahoma, Kyle B. Ayres

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cone in cone concretions found in the Stanley Group of Southeastern Oklahoma have a variety of external and internal attributes which allow diagenetic and theoretical models of formation to be hypothesized. Stanley Group carbonate cone in cone concretions are initially formed in sulfur reducing horizons at shallow burial depths in a poorly circulated possibly deep trough containing siliceous sediments and organic matter. Collected concretions near the town of Smithville, Oklahoma displayed four different external morphologies and four variations of mineral constituents. All concretions contained microscopic cones which initiated diffusion and/or fluid patterns and is an early cementation process that directly …

A Two Study Structural Modeling Based Approach For Ensuring Retention Of Empirical Structures And Optimizing Short Form Development., Meredith Kathleen Ginley May 2016

A Two Study Structural Modeling Based Approach For Ensuring Retention Of Empirical Structures And Optimizing Short Form Development., Meredith Kathleen Ginley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Retaining an empirically supported model while reducing assessment parameters becomes challenging in short form measurement development. In 2012 Larwin and Harvey proposed a systematic item reduction approach using structural equation modeling (SIR-SEM). The SIR-SEM permits retention of a strong connection to an empirically supported model while reducing some of the challenges of working with a large measurement battery. The application of the SIR-SEM strategy to reduce the number of items needed to assess an empirical supported multidimensional model of impulsivity (Ginley, Whelan, Meyers, Relyea, & Pearlson, 2014) is presented using a two-study procedure. To complete the item reduction, a SAS/Stat …

Inhibitory Effects Of Unique Sulfonamides On Leishmania Tarentolae And Potential Pathway Of Inhibition, Jade M. Katinas

Theses and Dissertations

Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania. Current treatments for the parasite are limited by cost, availability, and drug resistance as the worldwide occurrence of leishmaniasis continues to be more prevalent. Sulfonamides are a class of compounds with medicinal properties that have been used to treat bacterial and parasitic diseases via various pathways. In this study, newly synthesized, unique structural analogs of sulfonamide compounds were assessed for their impact on Leishmania cell viability and potential pathways for inhibition were evaluated. Leishmania tarentolae (ATCC Strain 30143) axenic promastigote cells were grown in BHI medium and treated with …

Understanding The Evolution Of The Israel Lobby's Influence On U.S. Foreign Policy, Heba Bahnassy

Capstone and Graduation Projects

The aim of this project is to observe the evolution of the Israel Lobby. The project looks at specific conflicts in history beginning with the Iraq War of '03 in order to present that by this point in history the Israel lobby had already gained ground in American politics. The project then goes back in history to directly contrast this moment of strength by observing the American Jewish community during the Holocaust, the creation of the Jewish state in 1948, the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Six-Day war in 1967, and finally the Yom Kippur war of 1973. The project …

Laterality Strength Is Linked To Stress Reactivity In Port Jackson Sharks (Heterodontus Portusjacksoni), Evan E. Byrnes, Catarina Vila Pouca, Culum Brown May 2016

Laterality Strength Is Linked To Stress Reactivity In Port Jackson Sharks (Heterodontus Portusjacksoni), Evan E. Byrnes, Catarina Vila Pouca, Culum Brown

Laterality Collection

Cerebral lateralization is an evolutionarily deep-rooted trait, ubiquitous among the vertebrates and present even in some invertebrates. Despite the advantages of cerebral lateralization in enhancing cognition and facilitating greater social cohesion, large within population laterality variation exists in many animal species. It is proposed that this variation is maintained due links with inter-individual personality trait differences. Here we explored for lateralization in Port Jackson sharks (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) using T-maze turn and rotational swimming tasks. Additionally, we explored for a link between personality traits, boldness and stress reactivity, and cerebral lateralization. Sharks demonstrated large individual and sex biased laterality …

The Sh3 Domain Of Unc-89 (Obscurin) Interacts With Paramyosin, A Coiled-Coil Protein, In Caenorhabditis Elegans Muscle, Hiroshi Qadota, Jonathan Mcmurry, Verra M. Ngwa, Et Al. May 2016

The Sh3 Domain Of Unc-89 (Obscurin) Interacts With Paramyosin, A Coiled-Coil Protein, In Caenorhabditis Elegans Muscle, Hiroshi Qadota, Jonathan Mcmurry, Verra M. Ngwa, Et Al.

Faculty Articles

UNC-89 is a giant polypeptide located at the sarcomeric M-line of Caenorhabditis elegans muscle. The human homologue is obscurin. To understand how UNC-89 is localized and functions, we have been identifying its binding partners. Screening a yeast two-hybrid library revealed that UNC-89 interacts with paramyosin. Paramyosin is an invertebrate-specific coiled-coil dimer protein that is homologous to the rod portion of myosin heavy chains and resides in thick filament cores. Minimally, this interaction requires UNC-89’s SH3 domain and residues 294–376 of paramyosin and has a KD of ∼1.1 μM. In unc-89 loss-of-function mutants that lack the SH3 domain, paramyosin is found …

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Controlling What Is Wild: The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act And Ecoterrorism, Thomas J. Levendosky May 2016

Controlling What Is Wild: The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act And Ecoterrorism, Thomas J. Levendosky

Student Theses 2015-Present

This thesis examines the extremist side of the environmental activism commonly known as ecoterrorism, and the subsequent implications of categorizing criminal activism as terrorism. Groups such as Earth First!, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), and the Environmental Liberation Front (ELF) strive to protect the natural world from the detrimental impacts of industrialization. Activists affiliated with these groups endorse direct action against environmentally harmful enterprises. Extremists are motivated by the belief that they are on the frontline defending the defenseless. They hope to dissuade corporations and government agencies from exploiting the natural world by exposing unethical practices and causing economic damage. …

Transancestral Fine-Mapping Of Four Type 2 Diabetes Susceptibility Loci Highlights Potential Causal Regulatory Mechanisms, Momoko Horikoshi, Lorenzo Pasquali, Steven Wiltshire, Jeroen R. Huyghe, Anubha Mahajan, Jennifer L. Asimit, John Blangero

School of Medicine Publications

To gain insight into potential regulatory mechanisms through which the effects of variants at four established type 2 diabetes (T2D) susceptibility loci (CDKAL1, CDKN2A-B, IGF2BP2 and KCNQ1) are mediated, we undertook transancestral fine-mapping in 22 086 cases and 42 539 controls of East Asian, European, South Asian, African American and Mexican American descent. Through high-density imputation and conditional analyses, we identified seven distinct association signals at these four loci, each with allelic effects on T2D susceptibility that were homogenous across ancestry groups. By leveraging differences in the structure of linkage disequilibrium between diverse populations, and increased sample size, we localised …

Learning And Memory In A Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Eric Robles May 2016

Learning And Memory In A Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Eric Robles

Honors Theses

Human Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent and lethal neurodegenerative disease; it involves the accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles, loss of synapses and neurons in specific areas of the brain, and the presence of extracellular amyloid plaques, particularly Amyloid beta-42 (AP-42). In this study, two Drosophila transgenic fly lines carrying either elav-GAL4 driver or UAS-AP-42 transgene, were crossed to generate AD flies that expressed low levels of human Ap-42. Male AD flies (experimental) and elav-GAL4 flies (as parental control without AP-42) were tested for learning and short-term memory using the courtship suppression assay (Siegal and Hall, 1979). The courtship suppression …

Development Of A [2]-Catenane Synthetic Method And A Student Beliefs Survey For A Hybrid Organometallics Course, Jourdan E. Lakes

Honors Theses

In this study, the value-added of a new upper-level chemistry course, CHEM 372-Organometallics, was defined using a Student Beliefs Survey that was answered by students in CHEM 372 and by faculty who teach upper-level chemistry courses at Coastal Carolina University. The laboratory portion of CHEM 372 focused on the synthesis of a [2]-catenane, which is a molecularly interlocked molecule (MIM). The intention was to give the CHEM 372 students a goal to work toward over the course of the semester instead of different, unrelated, experiments each week. Using this style of lab teaching, the students were introduced to graduate school-level …

On The Role Of Sublimation In The Works Of Gabriele Reuter, Maria Skene-Björkman May 2016

On The Role Of Sublimation In The Works Of Gabriele Reuter, Maria Skene-Björkman

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In my thesis I discuss the relationship between Nietzsche’s concept of amor fati (love of fate) and Lacan’s understanding of sublimation through the lens of selected works by Gabriele Reuter. I argue that Reuter deploys an understanding of will power that draws on the Nietzschean concept of amor fati, which ultimately serves the function of sublimation as discussed by Lacan. In their respective efforts at establishing their own identities, the female protagonists in Reuter’s novels have to learn to overcome their sufferings, and in doing so they transform the process of identity formation into a life-affirming enterprise in the spirit …

State Of Health: African-American Laboring Health And The Politics Of Reparations In The Age Of Emancipation, 1830-1900, Dale Kretz May 2016

State Of Health: African-American Laboring Health And The Politics Of Reparations In The Age Of Emancipation, 1830-1900, Dale Kretz

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

State of Health recasts the long history of emancipation in the United States. Emancipation is conventionally framed as a transition from lash to cash, wherein the federal government abandoned the formerly enslaved to the free labor system of the postbellum South. Yet this picture fails to account for the hundreds of thousands of intimate interactions freedpeople had with federal officials of the U.S. Pension Bureau in the decades after the Civil War. This dissertation accordingly shows how the personal rule of the slaveholder gave way to the personal rule of the American central state. The first chapters demonstrate that the …

Phase Space Simulation Of Relativistic Twisted Electron Mott Scattering, John K. Madsen May 2016

Phase Space Simulation Of Relativistic Twisted Electron Mott Scattering, John K. Madsen

Honors Theses

The question of how the spin of the proton and neutron arise from the angular momentum of the constituent partons is very pressing in the study of nuclear structure. As of yet, there has been no experimental method able to directly probe the angular momentum states of quarks. However, in recent years, several groups have shown that it is possible to produce coherent beams of electrons which carry definite, quantized units of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM). These "twisted" electrons have the potential to be applied to nuclear scattering experiments, as using the twistedness as an experimental degree of freedom may …
