Souls Gone In The Wind? Suspending Belief About Rebirth In Contemporary Artistic Works In The Tibetan World, Françoise Robin May 2016

Souls Gone In The Wind? Suspending Belief About Rebirth In Contemporary Artistic Works In The Tibetan World, Françoise Robin

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Belief in rebirth constitutes a core tenet of Tibetan Buddhism and has thus structured social and political power in Tibetan society for centuries through the tulku (reincarnate lama lineage) institution. Still, it appears to be questioned in a selection of recent short stories and films emanating from Tibet, in which the authorial voices point to a lack of certainty about reincarnation, opting for a suspension of belief. After a brief overview of the literary scene in Tibet today, and an analysis of the surveyed works, several hypothesis will be made to account for what may be seen as the beginning …

Grainyhead-Like 2 Inhibits The Coactivator P300, Suppressing Tubulogenesis And The Epithelial–Mesenchymal Transition, Phillip M. Pifer, Joshua C. Farris, Alyssa L. Thomas, Peter Stoilov, James Denvir, David M. Smith, Steven M. Frisch

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Developmental morphogenesis and tumor progression require a transient or stable breakdown of epithelial junctional complexes to permit programmed migration, invasion, and anoikis resistance, characteristics endowed by the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). The epithelial master-regulatory transcription factor Grainyhead-like 2 (GRHL2) suppresses and reverses EMT, causing a mesenchymal–epithelial transition to the default epithelial phenotype. Here we investigated the role of GRHL2 in tubulogenesis of Madin–Darby canine kidney cells, a process requiring transient, partial EMT. GRHL2 was required for cystogenesis, but it suppressed tubulogenesis in response to hepatocyte growth factor. Surprisingly, GRHL2 suppressed this process by inhibiting the histone acetyltransferase coactivator p300, …

The HIV-1 transactivator protein Tat is a critical regulator of HIV transcription primarily enabling efficient elongation of viral transcripts. Its interactions with RNA and various host factors are regulated by ordered, transient post-translational modifications. Here, we report a novel Tat modification, monomethylation at lysine 71 (K71). We found that Lys-71 monomethylation (K71me) is catalyzed by KMT7, a methyltransferase that also targets lysine 51 (K51) in Tat. Using mass spectrometry, in vitro enzymology, and modification-specific antibodies, we found that KMT7 monomethylates both Lys-71 and Lys-51 in Tat. K71me is important for full Tat transactivation, as KMT7 knockdown impaired the transcriptional activity …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Marine oil spills can have dire consequences for the environment. Research on their dynamics is important for the well-being of coastal communities and their economies. Propagation of oil spills is a very complex physical-chemical process. As seen during the Deepwater Horizon event in the Gulf of Mexico during 2010, one of the critical problems remaining for prediction of oil transport and dispersion in the marine environment is the small-scale structure and dynamics of surface oil spills. The laboratory experiments conducted in this work were focused on understanding the differences between the dynamics of crude and weathered oil spills and the …

Multiple Dimensions Of Stigma And Health Related Factors Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

This study is among the first to examine the association between multiple domains of HIV-related stigma and health-related correlates including viral load and medication adherence among young Black men who have sex with men (N = 92). Individual logistic regressions were done to examine the hypothesized relationships between HIV-related stigma and various health and psychosocial outcomes. In addition to examining total stigma, we also examined four domains of HIV stigma. Findings revealed the various domains of stigma had differential effects on health-related outcomes. Individuals who reported higher levels of total stigma and personalized stigma were less likely to be virally …

Origin And Use Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Case Study Of Three Math Teachers And Their Students, Christopher Neal Wood May 2016

Origin And Use Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Case Study Of Three Math Teachers And Their Students, Christopher Neal Wood

Dissertations and Theses

Teachers must have specific knowledge of a subject and how to teach it to promote learning in their students (also known as pedagogical content knowledge). Research has shown that project-based curriculum can be an effective way for teachers to leverage this knowledge into deeper student understanding and application readiness, but observations about when and how this happens in the classroom have not been adequately documented. In this study we will explore teaching and learning in a middle-school boat-building curriculum focused on real-world application of math concepts. The boat-building program took place over one week, included seven students, and was taught …

The Quasi-Human Child: How Normative Conceptions Of Childhood Enabled Neoliberal School Reform In The United States, Debbie Sonu May 2016

The Quasi-Human Child: How Normative Conceptions Of Childhood Enabled Neoliberal School Reform In The United States, Debbie Sonu

Publications and Research

This paper argues that normative conceptions of the child, as a natural quasi-human being in need of guidance, enable current school reforms in the United States to directly link the child to neoliberal aims and objectives. In using Foucault’s concept of governmentality and disciplinary power, we first present how the child is constructed as a subject of the adult world, then trace how such understandings invite school policies and practices that worked on the child, rather than with the child. In order to understand how the child comes to be known and recognized as a learner, both at the intersections …

Following this, a subcellular nanoendoscope that can locally excite fluorescence in labelled cell organelles and collect the emitted fluorescent light for detailed spectrum analysis is fabricated and tested. The nanoendoscope has …

Graphene Quantum Dots-Based Drug Delivery For Ovarian Cancer Therapy, Yiru Qin May 2016

Graphene Quantum Dots-Based Drug Delivery For Ovarian Cancer Therapy, Yiru Qin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ovarian cancer, one of the most dreadful malignancies of the female reproductive system, poses a lethal threat to women worldwide. In this dissertation, the objective was to introduce a novel type of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) based nano-sized drug delivery systems (DDS) for ovarian cancer treatment. As a starting point, the facile synthesis method of the GQDs was established. Subsequently, the targeting ligand, folic acid (FA), was conjugated to GQDs. Next, a FDA approved chemotherapeutic drug, Doxorubicin (DOX), was loaded to form the GQDs-FA-DOX nano-conjugation as the DDS. Moreover, the uptake profile and anti-cancer effect of the GQDs-FA-DOX were validated in …

The Implementation Of Professional Learning Communities In West Tennessee Secondary Schools And Their Influence On Teacher Job Satisfaction, Eric Thomas Jones May 2016

The Implementation Of Professional Learning Communities In West Tennessee Secondary Schools And Their Influence On Teacher Job Satisfaction, Eric Thomas Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Of the six Professional Learning Community (PLC) dimensions theorized by Hord, the 307 secondary school teacher respondents in this study suggested that two dimensions—namely, “Shared Personal Practice” and “Supportive Conditions: Structures”—tended systematically to be underrepresented at their schools. The under representation was irrespective of their schools’ categorization as either high- or low-achieving. As anticipated, statistically significant positive relationships were observed between all six PLC dimensions and the mean on a 20-item measure of “satisfaction with teaching.” However, when the means on the six PLC dimensions were simultaneously entered as predictor variables into a multiple regression model using “satisfaction with teaching” …

The Genetics Of Preterm Birth, Muthu Kumar Veerapen May 2016

The Genetics Of Preterm Birth, Muthu Kumar Veerapen

Open Access Dissertations

Defined as live births prior to the completion of 37 weeks of gestation, preterm birth (PTB) affects up to 13% of all US deliveries. PTB is one of the largest causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality resulting for a large economic burden. With an overall heritability of up to 37%, PTB is a multifactorial condition and is poorly understood. Despite being highly ancestry variable in affectation, few replicable studies have identified variants, transcriptional or epigenetic changes. The objective of this study is to utilize a multi-omics approach in well-characterized SPTB cohorts: exome sequencing in Latin-American infant SPTB cases; and RNA …

Improved Gas-Solid Mixing And Mass Transfer In A Pulsed Fluidized Bed Of Biomass With Tapered Bottom, Dening Jia, C. Jim Lim, Xiaotao Bi, Shahab Sokhansanj, Atsushi Tsutsumi

Fluidization XV

To improve fluidization quality and mass transfer rate of biomass fluidized beds with pulsed gas flow, an existing fluidized bed with rectangular cross-section area was modified with the insertion of a tapered bottom section such that dead zones observed in the original design could be eliminated. Batch drying tests were performed as an indirect indicator of gas-solid contact efficiency and mass transfer performance. Compared to the original design, biomass particles could be fluidized at a wider range of gas pulsation frequencies with significantly reduced channeling and gas bypassing in the new tapered design. Faster drying and thus improved mass transfer …

Self-Forgiveness And Forgiveness-Seeking In Response To Rumination: Cardiac And Emotional Responses Of Transgressors, Sérgio P. Da Silva, Charlotte Witvliet, Blake Riek

Faculty Scholarship

Self-forgiveness and forgiveness-seeking are important and understudied aspects of forgiveness. We examined the cardiac and emotional patterns of healthy young adults (40 women, 40 men) who recalled an unresolved offense they had caused another person. Participants engaged in four imagery conditions: ruminating about the offense, being humbly repentant and engaging in self-forgiveness, seeking forgiveness from the victim and receiving forgiveness, and seeking forgiveness from the victim and being begrudged. Being repentant and begrudged forgiveness by one’s victim was associated with the same level of guilt as when ruminating, but significantly more negative emotion, less control, and less empathy than when …
