•Discuss a project examining the coping mechanisms and strategies of death row prisoners •Extensive research = humans imprisoned in general •Less research = individuals on death rows •Focus = “hustling” as a coping mechanism (inmates/COs) •Special interest = how food production (cooking ingenuity) in one’s cell can be used for both a coping mechanism and a revenue stream •Final consideration will be given to the impact on the “well-being” of inmates, security, and the prison environment

Gay Legal Theatre, 1895-2015
Todd Barry, PhD
University of Connecticut, 2016
This dissertation examines how theatre and law have worked together to produce and regulate gay male lives since the 1895 Oscar Wilde trials. I use the term “gay legal theatre” to label an interdisciplinary body of texts and performances that include legal trials and theatrical productions. Since the Wilde trials, gay legal theatre has entrenched conceptions of gay men in transatlantic culture and influenced the laws governing gay lives and same-sex activity. I explore crucial moments in the history of this unique genre: the Wilde …

Cyberbullying, General Strain Theory, And The Moderating Effect Of Anonymity In College Students, Matheson T. Sanchez
Cyberbullying, General Strain Theory, And The Moderating Effect Of Anonymity In College Students, Matheson T. Sanchez
Master of Science in Criminal Justice Theses & (Pre-2016) Policy Research Projects
Cyberbullying is an intricate and ever-evolving form of bullying. Little is known about how cyberbullying is perpetrated at the collegiate level. Applying a General Strain Theory framework, the current study aims to assess the role of six university-related strain elements as possible predictors for cyberbullying, cybervictimization, and frequency of the two. Survey questionnaires were administered to 15 undergraduate classes at a southeastern university (N = 406). Additionally, the moderating role of internet anonymity on these relationships is addressed. Being threatened with losing or actually losing a scholarship and being placed on probation are identified as significant predictors of cybervictimization and …
To Minimize Animal Suffering, Broaden The Definition Of Animal Cruelty, Eleonora Gullone
To Minimize Animal Suffering, Broaden The Definition Of Animal Cruelty, Eleonora Gullone
Animal Sentience
Mandatory veterinary reporting of suspected abuse might discourage caregivers from seeking treatment for their injured animals. Animal abusers are more likely to be brought to justice by raising community awareness about the link between animal cruelty and human violence and its implications for the wellbeing of both humans and animals. Commonly accepted definitions of animal cruelty focus only on cruelty that is socially unacceptable, excluding an enormous amount of unnecessary animal suffering caused by humans. Only by broadening the definition of animal cruelty can we bring about the cultural change necessary to minimize this animal suffering.

Barack Obama Blindness (Bob): Absence Of Visual Awareness To A Single Object, Marjan Persuh, Robert D. Melara
Publications and Research
In two experiments, we evaluated whether a perceiver’s prior expectations could alone obliterate his or her awareness of a salient visual stimulus. To establish expectancy, observers first made a demanding visual discrimination on each of three baseline trials. Then, on a fourth, critical trial, a single, salient and highly visible object appeared in full view at the center of the visual field and in the absence of any competing visual input. Surprisingly, fully half of the participants were unaware of the solitary object in front of their eyes. Dramatically, observers were blind even when the only stimulus on display was …

Moving Family Dispute Resolution From The Court System To The Community, Jane C. Murphy, Jana B. Singer
All Faculty Scholarship
Over the past three decades, there has been a significant shift in the way the legal system approaches and resolves family disputes. Mediation, collaboration, and other non-adversarial processes have replaced a traditional, law-oriented adversarial regime. Until recently, however, reformers have focused largely on the court system as the setting for innovations in family dispute resolution. But our research suggests that courts may not be the best places for families to resolve disputes, particularly disputes involving children. Moreover, attempting to turn family courts into multi-door dispute resolution centers may detract from their essential role as adjudicators of last resort and forums …

Forensic Psychiatric Nursing: Promoting Collaboration Between Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing And Forensic Psychiatry, Liberty Olive Macias
Forensic Psychiatric Nursing: Promoting Collaboration Between Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing And Forensic Psychiatry, Liberty Olive Macias
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Saturday, November 7, 2015 and Sunday, November 8, 2015:
Literature has substantiated that lack of collaboration in the health care system compromises quality of care that results in increased human and financial losses. Conversely, a collaborative partnership among health care providers improves communication, delineates roles, enhances professional competence, and improves overall delivery of quality care. Interprofessional collaboration is an essential practice element in the forensic psychiatric mental health field. There is an increasing number of nurses employed in the forensic setting, working with psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists, social workers, and rehabilitation therapists. Forensic nursing texts describe the role …

Transforming Forensic Care In Level-One Emergency Departments In Gauteng Through Emancipatory Practice Development, Celia J. Filmalter
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Saturday, November 7, 2015 and Sunday, November 8, 2015: Violence and crime are escalating worldwide with South Africa as the eighth violent country in the world. Although death is often the outcome of violence many more victims survive the incident and seek medical attention in emergency departments. Therefore every patient in the emergency department is a forensic patient until otherwise proven. Healthcare providers - doctor or nurse - in the emergency departments however are inadequately prepared to recognize and care for the forensic population. Healthcare providers as custodians of human rights should be able to assist the …

Is Bad Stronger Than Good? The Impact Of Police-Citizen Encounters On Public Satisfaction With The Police, Yudu Li, Ling Ren, Fei Luo
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Purpose
Drawing upon the negativity bias theory, the purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of positive and negative perceptions of police-initiated or citizen-initiated contacts on three distinctive dimensions of public satisfaction with police (PSWP).
Design/methodology/approach
The data were obtained from a random-sample telephone survey of 1,143 residents in Houston in 2012. The OLS regressions were conducted with variables derived from the contact model and neighborhood context model that were often employed in the PSWP research. Particularly, five dichotomous variables were created to tap into the nature and quality of the police-citizen encounters.
Findings
The results confirm the …

Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015:
The study employed a descriptive-explorative design and was conducted among part-time student nurses of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. One hundred and sixteen students participated in the study. The study was aimed at exploring the Rape Myth Acceptance (RMA) of the students. It also determined the influence of the students' RMA and gender on their perception of victims' and perpetrators' responsibilities in cases of acquaintance, stranger, marital and date rape; and degree of trauma experienced by rape victim. An adapted structured questionnaire containing Rape Myth Acceptance Scale with four rape vignettes was used …

Claiming An Area Of Knowledge As Nursing Science To Improve The Health Of Marginalized Populations, Jacquelyn C. Campbell
Claiming An Area Of Knowledge As Nursing Science To Improve The Health Of Marginalized Populations, Jacquelyn C. Campbell
Biennial Convention (CONV)
The meaning of the Greek word episteme is a system of understanding or a body of ideas which give shape to the knowledge of that time, contrasted to "doxa" or common belief or opinion. The collaborative effort of many nurse researchers and practitioners over 25 years has resulted in the holistic health outcomes of violence being recognized both inside and outside nursing as an important area of nursing science. Nursing science has broken ground in integrating knowledge about the physiological and neurobiological with physical and mental health and behavioral responses to being abused and victimized by violence. The nursing knowledge …
