All Dissertations
This study was a quasi-experimental trials that compared relative effectiveness of Infographics Based Reusable Learning Objects Educational Intervention (RLO and Traditional Didactic Lectures (TDL). A total of 282 Clemson university students were randomized into four groups – Control, RLD, TDL and RLO+TDL and changes in their pre-test and post-test scores were compared before and after each interventions. Specific outcomes tracked included the number of correctly recognized symbols identifying a type plastic, the number of correctly answered question about the safety of using plastic food containers in a microwave and the satisfaction with the instruction. The analysis suggests that RLO intervention …
El Son De "El Cuervo": The Transformation Of Armonía Practice In The Mariachi Tradition, Adolfo Estrada Jr.
El Son De "El Cuervo": The Transformation Of Armonía Practice In The Mariachi Tradition, Adolfo Estrada Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
In mariachi scholarship to date, armonía practices are often overlooked. The armonía instruments provide essential rhythmic and harmonic support, yet their specific practices are assumed to be invariable. Close analysis suggests a more complex story. This work provides an analysis of the armonía within the son jalisciense song form in particular, by comparing several performances of the popular son jalisciense song “El Cuervo ” (The Crow). Analysis reveals that the armonía underwent a homogenization process before arriving at present-day practices, and I argue that the 1965 Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán recording is the point of homogenization on which future …

Experimenting With Digital Badges In An Online Graduate Education Course, Laurie Bobley, Ruth A. Best
Graduate School of Education Publications and Research
Introduction
In 2011, U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan endorsed digital badges as growing phenomena in the K-12 and higher education reform movement (Grant, 2014a; Tally, 2012; United States Department of Education, 2011). As an innovative technology, digital badges can be used to recognize accomplishments and achievements and may have a solid place in education because of the immediate feedback for graded and non-graded skills and competencies (Foster, 2014). As a disruptive technology, digital badges may emerge as motivational tools for 21st century learners because of inherent elements that are reminiscent of social media and gamification; two growing trends in …

In Situ Data Visualization Of Acme Land Model Simulations, Yu Pei, Benjamin Hernandez, Dali Wang, Brian Smith, Scott Atchley, Fengming Yuan, Chad Steed
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
With the ever increasing precision and complexity of various environmental models, writing large volumes of [email protected] to disk for post-processing becomes a huge bottleneck, and simulation modules diagnostic and tracking become difficult for scientists as well. In this paper, we propose a loosely coupled in situ visualization framework to address these problems when working with a representative land model within the Accelerated Climate Modeling for Energy (ACME). ACME land model (ALM) simulates energy, water, carbon nitrogen fluxes and state variables for various land surfaces. Loosely coupled in situ framework means simulation and visualization communicate through network, while tightly coupled means …
Creating Environments Through The Art Of Occupational Therapy, Lydia Royeen
Creating Environments Through The Art Of Occupational Therapy, Lydia Royeen
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Dr. Lori Reynolds has an interest in therapeutic gardens and the creation of living spaces that promote well-being for older adults. Dr. Reynolds educates various stakeholders on the benefits of occupational therapy, including landscape architects and senior living administrators. Her advocacy to expand occupational therapy beyond its mainstream roles is infectious. She speaks passionately about her work in helping to create therapeutic gardens and how her role as an occupational therapist offers great perspective in this process. She appreciates the environmental impact on an individual’s health and well-being and practices from a person-environment-occupation theory.

Goats Display Audience-Dependent Human-Directed Gazing Behaviour In A Problem-Solving Task, Christian Nawroth, Jemma M. Brett, Alan G. Mcelligott
Social Cognition Collection
Domestication is an important factor driving changes in animal cognition and behaviour. In particular, the capacity of dogs to communicate in a referential and intentional way with humans is considered a key outcome of how domestication as a companion animal shaped the canid brain. However, the lack of comparison with other domestic animals makes general conclusions about how domestication has affected these important cognitive features difficult. We investigated human-directed behaviour in an ‘unsolvable problem’ task in a domestic, but non-companion species: goats. During the test, goats experienced a forward facing or an away facing person. They gazed towards the forward …

Visual-Related Factors In Mobile Iconic Communication, Mohammed Hamad Alsuwailem
Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory, sequential, mixed methods design research was to explore current design trends and patterns in mobile application icons by analyzing existing icon elements and principles of design. The process of data collection and data analyses went through three main phases: (a) identify current characteristics and pattern design of existing icons, (b) compare mobile icons across selected application categories to underline how each category was different from the other regarding elements and principles of design used, and (c) explore users’ perceptions about the elements and principles of design and account for how these elements and principles influenced …

The Zoning Map And American City Form, Steven Thomas Moga
The Zoning Map And American City Form, Steven Thomas Moga
Landscape Studies: Faculty Publications
This paper investigates a common mode of visual communication in planning practice, the use of maps to regulate urban development. Holding equal legal status with the text, the zoning map was invented in the early twentieth century as a tool for implementing municipal policy and, although debated, modified, and sometimes repurposed over the past nine decades, it remains standard. Mundane and largely taken for granted, the zoning map itself has aroused little scholarly interest. However, as an image of the city and as a graphic intermediary used in administrative processes, it reveals how planning thought is embedded in planning tools.

Drop, Cover, And Hold On: Analyzing Fema's Risk Communication Through Visual Rhetoric, Samantha Jo Cosgrove
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project seeks to understand the relationship between visual rhetoric and power structure between FEMA’s Earthquake publications and their audience. Research shows images leave a longer impression on readers than text, causing more studies to focus on visuals rather than just text in technical communication. Author uses Critical Discourse Analysis to analyze the images in relation to text, design, and intended audience to determine what information is being privileged. It is determined that homeowners are being privileged with information over non-homeowners, established through a collection of images and image types. The lack of information for non-homeowners could result in injury …

The Project to Integrate Technical Communication Habits (PITCH) has been implemented across seven engineering and computer science undergraduate programs starting in fall 2012. The overarching goal of PITCH is to develop written, oral and visual communication skills and professional habits in engineering students. PITCH activities begin in the very first semester and are reinforced and extended through all four years of each program. After three years of progressively more extensive development and deployment, a preliminary assessment of student writing over their first three years in programs was performed. In May 2016 the first cohort of students will have completed the …

Web Publication Utilized As A Communication Tool For First Year Engineering Students, Hyun J. Kwon
Faculty Publications
© American Society for Engineering Education, 2016. This work in progress (WIP) paper describes the effectiveness of web publication as a communication tool for first year engineering students. Although the importance of generating a professionally written report has not diminished, web publication is quickly emerging as a necessary means of communicating for engineering students. In this digital age, an engineering education should have not neglect the importance of electronic communication and web based knowledge management. Web based publications provide several benefits compared to traditional portfolios: they allow students a means of enhancing visual/multimedia illustrations, provide students a means of developing …
A New Materialist Approach To Visual Rhetoric In Photoshopbattles, Jonathan Paul Ray
A New Materialist Approach To Visual Rhetoric In Photoshopbattles, Jonathan Paul Ray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project is to examine the visual rhetoric of one online community. Drawing heavily from the work of Laurie Gries (2015), I track the evolution of an image as it circulates through a forum of photo manipulators in the group “PhotoShopBattles.” While Gries’ work traced the evolution of the iconic Obama Hope poster and its iterations in various media, this project restricts its observations to the images posted to one webpage, focusing on one evolutionary chain. By narrowing the focus to one internet forum page that evolved over the course of one week, we can observe linear …
Three-Year-Old Photographers: Educational Mediation As A Basis For Visual Literacy Via Digital Photography In Early Childhood, Arielle Friedman
Three-Year-Old Photographers: Educational Mediation As A Basis For Visual Literacy Via Digital Photography In Early Childhood, Arielle Friedman
Journal of Media Literacy Education
The study examines two years of an educational program for children aged three to four, based on the use of digital cameras. It assesses the program’s effects on the children and adults involved in the project, and explores how they help the youngsters acquire visual literacy. Operating under the assumption that formal curricula usually marginalize visual and digital literacy, the program gives photography a central role in all areas of preschool learning: the children take pictures of all their daily preschool activities, and view and learn with photographs from various resources.
The findings illustrate the centrality of educational mediation – …

Bridging Service Design With Integrated Co-Design Decision Maker Interventions, Sune Gudiksen, Anders Christensen, Pernille Henriksen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In this paper we are exploring the relation between participation and fiction with the aim of investigating how fiction can be a resource for participatory design and can shed more light on the participatory value of fiction. We describe how fiction has been taken up and conceptualized in contemporary design research and argue that different strategies for applying fiction may be seen as a resource for evoking various forms of participation. Furthermore this paper present three case examples of participatory prototyping, that makes use of play or games as a way to engage participants with a particular use of make-believe. …
Integrating Sustainability Literacy Into Design Education, Andrea Quam
Integrating Sustainability Literacy Into Design Education, Andrea Quam
DRS Biennial Conference Series
A base definition of sustainability is balancing environmental, economic and societal concerns with future generations in mind. At its core, sustainability is future-focused, as the education of future design professionals must be. Design is understood to be a discipline seeking to improve the condition of current and future populations. Why then, is sustainability not universally integrated into design education programs and their curricula? This paper will look at a logical framework for instructors to introduce sustainability into design curriculum in a manner that shifts from looking at sustainability competencies, to a more profession-specific vision for sustainable literacy. An argument for …

What Is Sought From Graphic Designers? A First Thematic Analysis Of Job Offers For Graphic Design Positions In The United Kingdom, Paulo Roberto Nicoletti Dziobczenski, Oscar Person
DRS Biennial Conference Series
An empirically grounded understanding about which knowledge and skills that are sought from designers is missing for a number of professional subfields of design. This gap in research challenges i) design educators in planning their educational offerings and ii) design practitioners and students in articulating their contribution to clients and future employers. In this paper, we study the references that are made to knowledge and skills in job offers for graphic designers in UK. Based on a first thematic analysis of 1,406 job offers, we distinguish four main knowledge areas for graphic designers in terms of i) operational design skills, …

The Cycle Of Interdisciplinary Learning And Theory- Solution Building In Design Research, Young-Ae Hahn
The Cycle Of Interdisciplinary Learning And Theory- Solution Building In Design Research, Young-Ae Hahn
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This article discusses a new perspective on the sustainable product/service development process as an iterative cycle of interdisciplinary learning phase and theory-solution building phase. Such a perspective puts emphases on deductive or abductive-inductive communication activities between stakeholders, difference in research paradigms within which involved researchers act in, and how given information leads to useful insights for theory-building or solution-building via cognitive operations. The cycle is described with the author’s observations made during a research project, with specific cognitive activities pronounced in stakeholders’ learning and ideation activities.

This Conversation session will curate an open exchange about museum futures by exploring design as both a form of cultural heritage and as a catalyst for socio-cultural agency. The confluence of this subject is extremely timely and relevant given the Victoria and Albert Museum’s transformative vision and influential, catalysing role in the impending Olympic Park redevelopment. As part of London’s single most significant cultural infrastructure project since the establishment of “Albertopolis” back in the 1850s, the museum is approaching “V and A East” as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to redesign the museum in response to the digital, democratic age. In this …

Uses Of Argumentation Theory And Dialogic Methods In The Design Research Process, Luke Feast, Stella Boess, Karel Van Der Waarde
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Designers are becoming involved in working to address complex challenges and this has led some to argue that decision-making in design should be based on evidence and knowledge gained through research. However, while natural sciences aim to describe, explain and predict observable phenomena, design research often has the additional aim to be useful and to contribute to improving or interacting with situations. Consequently the knowledge brought together in design research must often satisfy the condition of generativity as well as generality, meaning that design research should have the additional capacity to generate creative reasoning and innovative design. In this conversation we …
