Equipoise: An Animated Short Film About Positiveness And Negativity., Gung-Kai Koo May 2016

Equipoise: An Animated Short Film About Positiveness And Negativity., Gung-Kai Koo

Theses

Equipoise is an animated short about positiveness, negativity and the opposite but complementary relationship between them. The two opposite attitudes of an individual’s personality not only affect but also establish emotions, decisions and behaviors. Positiveness reinforces positive thinking while pessimistic assumptions and hardship are driven by negativity. A person who has an imbalanced mind may live in pain or lead to high risks.

To have a great mental condition, both positiveness and negativity have to be involved to establish the balance. However, the importance of negativity, in one case, pessimism was frequently ignored as a result of education that focuses …

Blush: An Exploration Of Empathetic Cultivation Through Technological Devices, Jordan Reading May 2016

Blush: An Exploration Of Empathetic Cultivation Through Technological Devices, Jordan Reading

Theses

Technology has helped us keep in touch. Letters, telegrams, telephones, email, video chatting, social-networking — all ways in which we have communicated throughout the years. Each innovation has allowed us to lead independent lives from our loved ones and friends, while trying not to lose touch with each other. It’s freed us, but at the same time we’ve become chained it to. We’ve lost our ability to converse and empathize with each other directly — we’ve become more comfortable in front of a screen.

Unfortunately for us, digital devices in their current state are terrible forms of communication. It lacks …

Print Media In The Cold War, Madeline Chu Apr 2016

Print Media In The Cold War, Madeline Chu

Young Historians Conference

This investigation evaluates the degree to which print media propaganda in America reflected its anti-Communist ideologies during the early years of the Cold War. Specifically, the decade following the end of World War II in 1945 is examined. The messages, mediums, and subjects addressed of four images are analyzed in order to determine the degree to which they embody anti-Communist sentiments. These four pieces include a Time magazine cover from 1950, a comic book cover, a page of a Life magazine fashion article, and an advertisement by Radio Free Europe. Through these images, a conclusion was reached that while anti-Communist …

Hearing What You See: A Case For The Use Of Ancillary Gesture In Individual Percussion Performance, Tyson J. Voigt Apr 2016

Hearing What You See: A Case For The Use Of Ancillary Gesture In Individual Percussion Performance, Tyson J. Voigt

Open Access Dissertations

The use of physical gestures as expressive devices in western classical music performance is widely debated. Research conclusions and pedagogical assertions alike are highly subjective. Percussion performance is a special case in which expressive gestures are inseparable from motions necessary for playing the instrument, especially in terms of articulation. Research studies show that while percussion cannot vary note length to the same extent as other instruments, it can alter sound by changing the physical motion used to strike the instrument. Because the motion is nearly always visible to the listener, it is unclear whether the change in sound is more …

Interpretation And Affect In Found Footage Remakes: Martin Arnold’S Pièce Touchée, Nace Zavrl Apr 2016

Interpretation And Affect In Found Footage Remakes: Martin Arnold’S Pièce Touchée, Nace Zavrl

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

The found footage remakes of experimental filmmaker Martin Arnold transform intimate domestic scenes from classical Hollywood into a series of neurotically repetitive back-andforward gyrations. Exploring hidden psychological and socio-political subtexts, Arnold’s pièce touchèe (1989) offers a subversion of cinematic representational codes, as well as a sensorily engrossing experience to the spectator. This paper focuses on the graphic, visceral, rhythmic, and musical qualities of pièce touchée, examining the film’s moments of direct kinetic delight and disarming hilarity. Further, the paper interrogates the bodily experience of pièce touchée through an examination of additive rhythm, audio-visual looping, and flickering repetition. Arnold’s basic remaking …

Identifying Terrorist Affiliations Through Social Network Analysis Using Data Mining Techniques, Govand A. Ali

Information Technology Master Theses

In a technologically enabled world, local ideologically inspired warfare becomes global all too quickly, specifically terrorist groups like Al Quaeda and ISIS (Daesh) have successfully used modern computing technology and social networking environments to broadcast their message, recruit new members, and plot attacks. This is especially true for such platforms as Twitter and encrypted mobile apps like Telegram or the clandestine Alrawi. As early detection of such activity is crucial to attack prevention data mining techniques have become increasingly important in the fight against the spread of global terrorist activity. This study employs data mining tools to mine Twitter for …

Charlotte Perkins Stetson Gilman (1860-1935) was an accomplished American author who suffered from depression and post-partum depression. Her short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” written in June 1890, could be considered both a brief autobiography and a call for help. This well-known work tells the story of a woman trapped within her own declining mental health, using subtle, visual language and downward spiraling imagery to illustrate a woman imprisoned in her own mind, succumbing to the loss of control of her own sanity.

An Adaptive Visual Learning Approach For Waterborne Disease Prevention In Rural West Africa, Jonathan Le Mar Oglesby Apr 2016

An Adaptive Visual Learning Approach For Waterborne Disease Prevention In Rural West Africa, Jonathan Le Mar Oglesby

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Depleted water supplies, along with industrial and human waste, are driving a world water crisis that poses a growing risk to food markets, energy production, political stability, and human health (Global Water Security 2012). One obvious example of the this crisis is the more than 1 billion people who obtain their drinking water from contaminated sources (WHO/UNICEF 2006; Clasen et al. 2008). With a projected increase of 1.3 billion people between now and 2050, Africa will add more to the global population than any other world region (Haub and Kaneda 2013). For this research, visual learning design factors were incorporated …

Categorization Of Food Value Via Crayfish Aggression, Justin Thanh-Tuan Tran Apr 2016

Categorization Of Food Value Via Crayfish Aggression, Justin Thanh-Tuan Tran

Masters Theses

In numerous species, social interactions play a key role in deciding the allocation of resources. Aggression is a tactic that crayfish utilize to become dominant, which allows them to acquire higher quality resources. Many studies of aggression and agonistic interactions have used crayfish because they are known to be innately aggressive and are quick to become involved in agonistic interactions that may escalate into fighting. The primary objective of this study is to elucidate the relationship between differing food resources and their effect on aggression of crayfish. It is hypothesized that increased desirability for the food resource will induce more …

The Art Of Exile: A Narrative For Social Justice In A Modern World, Dakota D. Homsey Apr 2016

The Art Of Exile: A Narrative For Social Justice In A Modern World, Dakota D. Homsey

Student Publications

In this paper I will illustrate what exile art is, how it is influenced on a global platform, and the change it engenders. My research reveals a central theme of globalization in the exchange, mix, and clash of cultures and political views that accompany it as well as the spread of art and ideas. In my research I illustrate how political circumstance, and sense of responsibility to share a political narrative, propelled exile art from a personal to a political narrative. My research illustrates how, as displaced people stripped of a homeland, exiled artists have surfaced as a voice of …

A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei Apr 2016

A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei

Graduate School of Art Theses

Art has the potency of mediation: bridging human differences, questioning voids in historical trajectories, negotiating spaces of relevance, and most importantly, being signifiers that embody the absent. I speak in a borrowed language, a multilingual visual tongue, inspired by a culmination of Western and African Art modes of practices to create charged platforms for multicultural communication.

My art presents visual portals that allow for intercultural and interracial mingling as issues of colorism, present-day colonialism, gender inequality and the politics of dress are foregrounded for collective deliberation. The essence of the work is often activated and brought to its full potential …

Building A Better Character Model: The Art And Process Of Character Design, Sarah K. Mitchell Apr 2016

Building A Better Character Model: The Art And Process Of Character Design, Sarah K. Mitchell

Senior Honors Theses

The art and process of character design flows from understanding the world a character lives in and how that world affects his or her actions, personality, and storyline, and also inspires a character's dress, poses, and accouterments. This thesis was influenced by the overwhelming prevalence of action-oriented female characters who are demeaned through suggestive poses, clothing, and degrading actions that sexualize the characters whether they are weak or strong; this is often done with no logical reason from the perspective of the character. In this thesis, the process of character design will be shown through the author's character Joanna. The …
