Secondary-School Department Chairpersons’ Perceptions Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Jonathan K. Greene
Secondary-School Department Chairpersons’ Perceptions Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Jonathan K. Greene
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The concept of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) provides a framework for understanding the professional demands of secondary-school teachers in facilitating student learning. Teachers develop their PCK both formally in preservice and inservice education and informally with their colleagues. Teacher leaders, such as the secondary-school department chairs, can work with colleagues to promote professional growth. The purpose of this study was to understand how secondary-school department chairs understood PCK and perceived their role in promoting the PCK growth of their department colleagues. A qualitative research design using in-depth, semi-structured interviews involved 15 participants from one school district in the southeast of …
Examining Perceptions Of Black Administrators In Higher Education Regarding Administrative Leadership Opportunities, Renita Taylor Thompson
Examining Perceptions Of Black Administrators In Higher Education Regarding Administrative Leadership Opportunities, Renita Taylor Thompson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In spite of the research highlighting the significance of the presence of Black administrators to the success of Black students, there continue to be noticeable disparities in the representation of Black and White administrators in higher education. The racial and ethnic makeup of institutions of higher education does not reflect the demographics of the U.S. population. Black administrators are disproportionately underrepresented throughout academe, and are even more sparse at the executive levels of leadership. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions and attitudes of mid-level Black administrators with respect to progressing into executive-level administrative positions at predominantly …

An Examination Of The Perceptions Of Elementary School Principals, General Education Teachers, And Special Education Teachers About Supportive Inclusion Practices And Processes, Ahmed Afia Laroussi
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This dissertation focuses on the perceptions of the school principals, general education teachers, and special education teachers about practices and processes that support the inclusion program. High stake holders in schools and parents of students with disabilities are advocating for the improvement of the quality of the inclusion as an academic service delivery model. This study is significant because the number of students with disabilities being placed in the general education classroom continues to increase, and the federal and the state mandates are holding school districts and schools accountable for all students’ academic performance, including students with disabilities. A …

In the 10 years since the invention of Facebook, social media sites have become an indispensable part of the marketing and communications strategy employed by a broad spectrum of organizations, including university athletic departments. While social media is almost universally used, a review of academic literature suggests the study of deployment of social media resources, and analysis of their effectiveness, is still very much in preliminary stages. Professional literature on social media use is out in front of peer-reviewed research. Therefore, we use Funk’s framework for social media practices as a point of departure, offering a social media strategy specifically …

Women's Professional Sports: A Case Study On Practices That Could Increase Their Profitability, Danielle H. Mcardle
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Women’s professional sports leagues have often been considered a risky business endeavor. Critics cite low attendance, lack of sponsorships, lack of media rights deals, and numerous other reasons for why women’s professional sports leagues are not profitable. In analyzing the current landscape of women’s professional sport leagues, this paper uses a case study approach to develop a strategy that will highlight lessons learned from past women’s professional sports leagues, current professional sports leagues, sponsorship agreements, fans, social, digital, and mobile marketing strategies, and management practices to show how the business of women’s sports could be made into a more profitable …

Examining The Validity Of Fitbit Charge Hr Tm For Measuring Heart Rate In Free-Living Conditions, Jung-Min Lee, Hyun-Sung An, Seoung-Ki Kang, Youngdeok Kim
Research Presentations
Optical blood flow sensors (i.e. photoplethysmographic techniques) have recently been utilized in wearable activity trackers. The Fitbit Charge HRTM (FBHR) is one of the widely recognized wearable activity trackers that utilizes Fitbit’s proprietary PurePulse optical heart rate (HR) technology to automatically measure wrist-based HR. Despite its increasing popularity, however, no study to date has addressed the validity of FBHR for measuring HR in free-living conditions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of FBHR for measuring HR using a chest strap Polar HR monitor (PHR) as a reference measure in free-living conditions. METHODS: Ten …
The Drivers Of Success In The Nfl: Differences In Factors Affecting The Probability Of Winning Based On First Half Performance, Zach Alleva
CMC Senior Theses
This paper explores how changing various end game statistics effects a given teams probability of winning a game in the National Football League (NFL). Data from the 2000-2016 NFL seasons is split into two subsets, one for teams winning at halftime, another for losing teams. Using this data an empirical model is estimated to study how the determinants of a team’s success differ between the two sets of data. Overall, the factors which determine a team’s outcome are consistent between the two subsets, varying primarily by magnitude of the effect.

Sport Consumer Behavior Research: Improving Our Game, Daniel Funk, Daniel Lock, Adam Karg, Mark Pritchard
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Sport consumer behavior (SCB) research continues to grow in both popularity and sophistication. A guiding principle in much of this research is that sport consumers seek out sport-related experiences, and the benefits they yield, in order to satisfy needs and wants. This approach has provided new knowledge and insight into sport consumers. One outcome of this focus is that the vast majority of research on sport consumers has centered on psychological characteristics of these sport experiences related to evaluative and affective components. In addition, this research has predominately relied on cross-sectional studies and attitudinal surveys to collect information with less …

Athletes Have Rights Too, Right? Investigating The Extreme Unfairness In Sports' Purported Supreme Authority - Why The International Court Of Arbitration For Sport Fails To Reign Supreme, Zachary Gotlib
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note argues that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), despite its role as a leading body in international sports dispute resolution, fails to achieve true supremacy due to systemic unfairness. CAS lacks key principles of fairness, particularly in its treatment of individual athletes compared to powerful entities like teams and leagues, hindering its ability to be recognized as a supreme judicial body.
An Exploration Of Organizational Trust In Intercollegiate Athletic Departments, Jacob K. Tingle
An Exploration Of Organizational Trust In Intercollegiate Athletic Departments, Jacob K. Tingle
School of Business Faculty Research
Scholars in in educational leadership, business management, and organizational psychology have thoroughly explored the construct of organizational trust. While trust has attracted some attention from sport management scholars, the research has primarily focused on the individual, rather than organization. This manuscript provides an overview of the organizational trust literature with specific application to the area of intercollegiate athletic departments. Additionally, the Athletic Department Trust Scale (ADTS) is introduced as an instrument to measure organizational trust in the setting. The procedures taken to refine and test the instrument are summarized. Results revealed the ADTS as psychometrically sound. The instrument was used …
A Call For Upholding Access And Affordability At Jesuit Institutions, Drew Roberts, Desiree D. Zerquera
A Call For Upholding Access And Affordability At Jesuit Institutions, Drew Roberts, Desiree D. Zerquera
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Jesuit colleges and universities share a distinct mission that is centered on access and affordability as part of the social justice work of Jesuit higher education. However, the context of higher education is often at odds with the fulfillment of this mission; innovation is needed in policy and practice to uphold access for the nation’s most marginalized populations. In this piece, we define and advocate for this mission, juxtaposing it against current forces in higher education. We then use analysis of data from all twenty-eight Jesuit institutions to raise questions about the fulfillment of this mission currently, and we point …
Participant Perceptions Of Knowledge Sharing In A Higher Education Community Of Practice, Shawn Whittaker Brayton
Participant Perceptions Of Knowledge Sharing In A Higher Education Community Of Practice, Shawn Whittaker Brayton
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the source of economic wealth continues to transition from a late industrial era to an early knowledge era, the foundation of success in the 21st century relates to a dependency on knowledge-based assets such as ideas, processes, and information (Alavi & Leidner, 2001; Sallis & Jones, 2002; Søndergaard, Kerr, & Clegg, 2007; Sveiby, 1997). During this transition, the emergent discipline of knowledge management in business and in education has evolved from a techno-centric approach (Alavi & Leidner, 2001; McAdam & McGreedy, 1999; McElroy, 2000) to a holistic social process oriented toward meeting institutional demands for new knowledge and …
Selected High School Science Teachers' Perceptions Regarding Adaptations To Their Instructional Practice Due To The Implimentation Of State Required End Of Course Exams In A Midsized Central Florida School District, Thomas V. Keller
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Science teachers have a unique place in education due to their academic discipline and the fact that the public ties teacher accountability to student performance. One major measure of teacher accountability in the State of Florida is the end of course examinations (EOC). The purpose of this study was to examine selected high school Biology teachers’ perceptions about how their instructional practices have been affected by the administering of an EOC in comparison to other high school science teachers who are not required to administer an EOC. The overriding research question for this study was: What are the perceptions of …

Biophilic Architecture, Connectedness To Nature, And The Importance Of Environmental Issues, Sarah Michelle Kahl
Honors Papers
In today’s world where climate change consequences are apparent, we need to be searching for ways to encourage more pro-environmental behaviors. Connectedness to nature, which is the sense of kinship and sense of community with the natural world, is one factor that has been shown to promote pro-environmental behavior. While architecture types have been tested with states of well-being, they have never been assessed to examine the effects on one’s connectedness to nature. This study used Seeley G. Mudd Center (Mudd) and the Adam Joseph Lewis Center (AJLC) at Oberlin College to determine whether biophilic types of architecture versus architecture …
