“From Whence Cometh My Help?” Exploring Black Doctoral Student Persistence, Melanie Acosta, Shaunte Duggins, Thomas E. Moore, Thomasenia Adams, Bridgette Johnson
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
In previous decades, the bulk of research focused on Blacks in doctoral programs highlight issues of recruitment and access with little attention given to the racialized experiences or perspectives of African descent scholars-in-training. More recently, a growing body of research has used qualitative methods to dismantle the myth of a colorblind doctoral student experience. Instead these scholars illuminate the ways in which race and racism create challenges for Black doctoral students. The present study adds to this literature by revealing the ways that Black doctoral students persist amid this highly racialized context. Researchers employ critical race theory and qualitative focus …

How The Emerging U.S. Retirement System Magnifies Wealth Inequality, Karl Polzer
Center for Social Development Research
Wealth inequality and financial inclusion have long been hot topics in international economic development. They now have taken center stage in the U.S. presidential primary debates. As more analysts probe this phenomenon in various policy areas, they may find that America’s continuing shift to a “defined contribution” (DC) retirement system is playing a role in increasing the concentration of wealth.

Colonial Subjugation And Human Rights Abuses: Twenty-First Century Violations Against Brazil’S Rural Indigenous Xukuru Nation, Marcia Mikulak
Anthropology Faculty Publications
This article addresses the struggle of rural Xukuru indigenous peoples in Pesqueira, Pernambuco, Brazil as they organize to stop historical violence against them and work to regain their constitutional right to their ancestral lands. The article illustrates what a single researcher working along-side rural people's and NGOs can do to make change in an oppressive state. With the birth of the United Nations (UN) in 1945 and the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, member states have often provided rhetorical validity to human rights documents and conventions; a rhetoric that is often ignored upon return to …

Marriage, Tradition, Multiculturalism And The Accommodation Of Difference In Australia, Michael Quinlan
Marriage, Tradition, Multiculturalism And The Accommodation Of Difference In Australia, Michael Quinlan
The University of Notre Dame Australia Law Review
This paper examines marriage in multicultural and multi-faith Australia. It considers the history of, and reasons for, State recognition of marriage in Australia between one man and one woman entered into voluntarily for life. It argues that the tradition in Australia since European settlement has been for the State to only recognize this traditional form of marriage as marriage. The paper considers the meaning of equality and discrimination and argues that for those concepts to have meaning in the context of marriage it is first necessary to have a clear understanding of why the State does and should continue to …

Online Activities Through Social Media By High Education Students: Business Vs. Informatics, Rodrigo Sandoval-Almazan, David Valle-Cruz
Global Media Journal México
Online Social Networks (OSN) are the new tools that students are using to interact, communicate and collaborate for school work. The impact on school activities, as well as the communication mechanisms among students, have just started to be studied. This research focuses on this issue, trying to answer the question: How do college students use OSN to improve communication and exchange knowledge? For this purpose we used the application of two online surveys applied to students of business administration (BBA - Bachelor in Business Administration) and informatics management (BIM – Bachelor in Informatics Management) students in 2010 and 2012 in …
Legal And Medical Ethical Entanglements Of Infant Male Circumcision And International Law, Paul Jerome Mclaughlin Jr.
Legal And Medical Ethical Entanglements Of Infant Male Circumcision And International Law, Paul Jerome Mclaughlin Jr.
Library Faculty Publications
The practice of infant male circumcision has been debated by legal and medical experts for years. The practice, once seen as a social norm, has come under opposition by children’s rights, legal, and medical organisations around the world. In order to meet the requirements of international treaty law and allow infant male children the fullest opportunity for self determination, infant male circumcision must be treated under the law and by medical practitioners with the same degree of opposition that female genital mutilation has received.

Assessing Probation Officers’ Knowledge Of Offenders With Intellectual Disabilities: A Pilot Study, Paige Dunlap
Assessing Probation Officers’ Knowledge Of Offenders With Intellectual Disabilities: A Pilot Study, Paige Dunlap
Faculty Publications
The prevalence of offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID) is increasing. Studies have shown that although most probation officers will have offenders with ID on their caseload, these officers have received minimal training to effectively interact with this population. Additionally, no studies have assessed probation officers' knowledge of people with ID. This study has two aims: to pilot test the Probation Officer Knowledge of Intellectual Disabilities Assessment, and to evaluate the instrument's reliability and validity. Test-retest, internal consistency, item-total correlation, Cronbach's alpha, item difficulty, and construct validity were assessed for the instrument. Descriptive statistics and reliability coefficients analysis were conducted. The …
An Analysis Of Immunization Understanding In Undergraduate Students At Bethel University, Jeff Dahlquist, Steven D. Lindblom
An Analysis Of Immunization Understanding In Undergraduate Students At Bethel University, Jeff Dahlquist, Steven D. Lindblom
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This investigation studied the level of understanding of the nature of immunizations and vaccine preventable diseases in undergraduate students at Bethel University. Immunization literature demonstrates a significant lack of understanding in the general population in relation to the nature of vaccine preventable diseases and the immunizations used to counter them. Furthermore, the literature concludes that such a grossly inadequate understanding of the nature of vaccine preventable diseases may precipitate dire epidemiological consequences. This investigation was a pre-experimental design and utilized a short questionnaire administered one time to a sample population of 171 subjects over 18 years of age who were …

Foster Care Experiences And Correlated Outcomes, Courtney Ocasio
Foster Care Experiences And Correlated Outcomes, Courtney Ocasio
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
The current study sought to expand the knowledge base on the relationship between foster care experiences and the outcomes associated with these experiences. The different reported experiences in foster care were assessed using safety, power/control, esteem, and intimacy/trust themes. Foster care experiences were first identified and then compared to subsequent positive or negative outcomes. It was hypothesized that when subjects were reporting on their positive experiences in foster care, there would be positive correlations between intimacy/trust and positive outcomes, as well as safety and positive outcomes. In addition, with subjects reporting on their negative foster care experiences, there would be …
A New Theoretical Approach To Postsecondary Student Disability: Disability-Diversity (Dis)Connect Model, Katherine C. Aquino
A New Theoretical Approach To Postsecondary Student Disability: Disability-Diversity (Dis)Connect Model, Katherine C. Aquino
Administration and Instructional Leadership Faculty Publications
Disability is often viewed as an obstacle to postsecondary inclusion, but not a characteristic of student diversity. Additionally, current theoretical frameworks isolate disability from other student diversity characteristics. In response, a new conceptual framework, the Disability-Diversity (Dis)Connect Model (DDDM), was created to address disability as a multifaceted aspect of student diversity.

In the United States, one in four children under the age of 6 attending preschool has at least one immigrant parent and speaks a language other than English. Despite this increasing population of immigrant children in U.S. preschool settings, their stories have rarely been heard. The author shares three stories of her students and their families that focus on their lived experiences and funds of knowledge, and reconnects those stories with her own funds of knowledge as an immigrant student and teacher. Teachers in many communities around the world are educating immigrant children in their classroom. By focusing on the …

This symposium article discusses an unexamined area of legal aid and legal history—the role that late nineteenth and early twentieth century Jewish women played in the delivery of legal aid as social workers, lawyers, and, importantly, as cultural and legal brokers. It presents two such women who represented different types and models of legal aid—Minnie Low of the Chicago Bureau of Personal Service, a Jewish social welfare organization, and Rosalie Loew of the Legal Aid Society of New York. I interrogate how these women negotiated their identities as Jewish professional women, what role being Jewish and female played in shaping …
Self-Efficacy Enhanced In A Cross-Cultural Context Through An Initiative In Under-Resourced Schools In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, M Maher
Education Papers and Journal Articles
This paper discusses the Khanyisa Programme, an initiative in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where learners from under-resourced schools are supported by teachers and high achievers in Grade 11 and 12 from a previously advantaged state school under apartheid. A qualitative, evaluative study was undertaken to identify key elements in the ongoing success of the programme and collect participant suggestions for improvement. The findings, discussed within the framework of self-efficacy theory, identified enormous gains by Khanyisa learners, leading to vastly improved career prospects.
Empowering Teachers And Learners: Strategies To Maximise Curriculum Potential And Counter Disadvantage In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Through The Khanyisa Initiative, M Maher, J Seach
Education Papers and Journal Articles
This paper first provides a discussion on disadvantage and what that means in an educational context. It then proposes a theoretical conceptualisation of curriculum highlighting that curriculum advantages some learners more than others on several levels. Finally, discussion then turns to an evaluative study of an initiative that is ongoing in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, involving disadvantaged learners and their teachers in under-resourced schools. Key findings from the study include effective ways the initiative found (a) to assist teachers in disadvantaged schools to keep abreast of changes to curriculum; (b) to empower teachers to promote their learners’ capacity to access the …
