Introducing Trauma-Informed Care In An Urgent Care Center: A Quality Improvement Project, Marco Belluardo-Crosby

DNP and Student Works

The provider-patient relationship can be influenced by stigma, particularly when it is based on the clinician's perspective toward people with any psychiatric illnesses, with great impact clinical outcomes. This project aimed to identify changes in providers' attitudes toward people diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses after providing trauma-informed care training in a setting where integrated care is practiced. The project utilized a questionnaire to assess the topic knowledge and the Opening Minds Scale for Health Care Providers to evaluate staff's attitude and stigma. Staff received a modified training based on the Risking Connection ® model. Both questionnaires were administered pre-, post-, and …

Nudging Youth To Develop Savings Habits: Experimental Evidence Using Sms Messages, Katherine Rodríguez, Juan E. Saavedra

Center for Social Development Research

In this working paper, we report on a field experiment articulating financial information via cellphone text messages and financial decisions among low-income youth in Colombia. For twelve months, youth accountholders are randomly assigned to receive either: (a) monthly financial education messages, (b) monthly savings reminders, (c) semimonthly reminders, or (d) control. After 12 months, account balances in monthly and semimonthly reminders groups increase by 28% and 43%, respectively, relative to controls. Financial education messages do not increase balances. Over two thirds of balance increases in reminder groups are net savings. Savings effects of reminders last eight months after youth stop …

Reconciliation: All Our Relations, Kelly Laurila May 2016

Reconciliation: All Our Relations, Kelly Laurila

Consensus

The author shares the national, community (local) and individual discourses taking place as they pertain to the reconciliation process that is happening with Indigenous and Settler peoples in Canada. Importantly, the author sheds light on a multitude of local efforts of reconciliation happening that have not yet made it to academic discourses and publications, but which could be instrumental in contributing to reconciliation. A key component emphasized in these reconciliation efforts and which could be the catalyst for change, is the importance of relationships. Stemming from an Indigenous epistemological perspective, the creation of positive relationships with others and ‘all our …

Chronic Absenteeism Report, Ann Curry-Stevens, Connie Kim-Gervey, Chief Education Office Research Team

Center to Advance Racial Equity Publications and Reports

The Chief Education Office (CEdO) has commissioned this report on chronic absenteeism in Oregon schools to better understand this problem in general, to specifically hear from students and families most likely to be chronically absent, and to present recommendations for the State and local communities. This report is a result of collaboration between CEdO, Portland State University (PSU), and the Coalition of Communities of Color (CCC). Researchers from PSU conducted all of the original research. This report builds on previous work in Oregon and around the country, but it is not a duplication of existing research. Instead, the research is …

Thematic Research In The Frame Creation Process, Jos Van Leeuwen, Dick Rijken, Iefke Bloothoofd, Eefje Cobussen, Bram Reurings, Rob Ruts

ServDes Conference Series

Many of today’s challenges that confront society are complex and dynamic and require new perspectives, new ways of looking at problems and issues, in order to be able to come to solutions that could not be found before. This process is called reframing and we suggest that one of the key stages in this process is thematic research, the search for themes that underlie these complex challenges. These themes generally turn out to be human themes, related to socio-emotional aspects of life. In this paper we report our experiences and lessons learned from a series of cases in which we …

A Tale Of Two Mommies: (Re)Storying Family Of Origin Narratives, Elizabeth A. Suter, Jody Koenig Kellas, Stephanie K. Webb, Jordan A. Allen May 2016

A Tale Of Two Mommies: (Re)Storying Family Of Origin Narratives, Elizabeth A. Suter, Jody Koenig Kellas, Stephanie K. Webb, Jordan A. Allen

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examined co-mother family of origin stories. Origin stories, representing the formation of a family, are culturally understood within a master narrative of heterosexual love and biological childbearing. Beginnings of co-mother families rupture this dominant, gendered, boy-meets-girl script. Investigating whether or not co-mother stories reify the normative master narrative or if instead their narrations resist and/or possibly transform conventional understandings, analysis identified three co-mother origin story themes: Becoming a Family (1) as Normal, (2) as Negotiation, and (3) as Normalization. Themes differ in terms of depiction of co-mother family formation as congruent with current norms, as something that needs …

The Development And Validation Of The Social Recovery Measure, Casadi "Khaki" Marino May 2016

The Development And Validation Of The Social Recovery Measure, Casadi "Khaki" Marino

Dissertations and Theses

Mental health recovery is a complex phenomenon involving clinical, functional, physical, and social dimensions. The social dimension is understood to involve meaningful relationships and integration with supportive individuals and a wider community. While the recovery model developed from a movement led by consumers and survivors of the mental health system to promote hope, self-determination, and social inclusion, the clinical aspects of recovery have dominated mental health research and practice. The under-investigated area of social recovery calls for psychometrically sound measurement instruments. The purpose of the current study was to develop and validate the Social Recovery Measure (SRM). The study was …

Qualifications Of Illinois Head Start And Early Head Start Administrators, Mccormick Center For Early Childhood Leadership

McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership Publications

In this Research Note, the McCormick Center released new workforce data on the qualifications of Head Start and Early Head Start administrators at the grantee and site levels. These findings are important since little is known about the qualifications of on-site leaders in Head Start and Early Head Start programs. While Head Start programs are supported by well-developed systems, administrators—especially site-level managers—must possess the knowledge and skills to implement effective systems and lead individuals for sustained programmatic success. The Spring 2016 Research Note summarizes findings of a study of Head Start and Early Head Start administrators in Illinois.

Sweeping Into The Interpretive Turn: Theory And Practice Expansion In Situational Analysis, Craig Whisker May 2016

Sweeping Into The Interpretive Turn: Theory And Practice Expansion In Situational Analysis, Craig Whisker

The Qualitative Report

Between Adele Clarke’s 2005 ground-breaking book, Situational Analysis: Grounded Theory after the Postmodern Turn, and its second edition due for release next year under an expanded authorship and title, comes this effective practice-based taster. Here SA is situated within the interpretive turn, rather than the postmodern as previously, in a shift that might subtly be taking back some of the ground formerly given to Foucault at the expense of Strauss. Exemplars of SA studies, each with a reflective postscript by their authors, provide rich details on methods from a community of scholars, who along with the book’s editors, reproduce the …

Socioeconomic Status And Its Relationship To Educational Resources, Christene M. Sledge May 2016

Socioeconomic Status And Its Relationship To Educational Resources, Christene M. Sledge

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between socioeconomic status and access to educational resources was examined. According to a national report on school funding, New Jersey rates third in the nation for equality in school funding (Baker, Sciarra and Farrie 2015). Although disparities in school funding are lower than average, students of low socioeconomic status are still at a disadvantage when entering school. The ways in which school districts spend their money was believed to be affected by the socioeconomic status of the students who attend their schools. Literature was reviewed on the ways in which socioeconomic status has been associated with various health …

Improving Suicide Risk Management In Military Primary Care, John A. Hoyos May 2016

Improving Suicide Risk Management In Military Primary Care, John A. Hoyos

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Background: In the military, completed suicides and attempt rates have risen across the services since 2001 by 82% per 100,000 in spite of various intervention programs. The literature suggests that absent and inadequate suicide assessments may be part of the problem. Primary care providers are often not prepared for risk assessment and management of suicidal patients.

Aim/Purpose of Project: The project sought to improve the consistency of providers in conducting adequate risk assessments and providing crisis hotline information to patients who were cleared to return home after an encounter, as required by NPSG 15.01.01.

Project Plan Process: This evidenced-based project …

Elementary Teaching Strategies For Lgbtq Inclusion, Nicole E. Cox May 2016

Elementary Teaching Strategies For Lgbtq Inclusion, Nicole E. Cox

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

It is the responsibility of teachers to create a classroom environment that is both inclusive and validating to the identities of students and their families. This capstone project explores how teachers can create this environment for students and families that are a part of the LGBTQ community. Because of the discrimination that presents itself through bullying based on LGBTQ identities, and the lack of LGBTQ representation within classroom lessons, there is a need for a higher quantity and quality of resources for teachers to create these inclusive environments, specifically in elementary schools. To assess our local community, teacher interviews were …
