Engaging Learners Through Self-Guided Tutorials: Flipped Information Literacy Instruction At Bryn Mawr College, Olivia Castello, Alex Pfundt May 2016

Engaging Learners Through Self-Guided Tutorials: Flipped Information Literacy Instruction At Bryn Mawr College, Olivia Castello, Alex Pfundt

Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference

With the help of a Mellon Curricular Development grant, librarians at Bryn Mawr College’s Library & Information Technology Services redesigned their instructional model for one-shot information literacy instruction. They created self-guided, interactive online tutorials that allowed them to “flip” basic instructional content and revise their in-class lesson plan. From 2014-2016 they also conducted an empirical research study in three partner courses to assess the efficacy of their flipped classroom model. This poster will discuss the development of the online tutorials, highlights of the assessment study, and future directions for Bryn Mawr LITS’ work on information literacy instruction.

Addressing The Impact Of Deportation On Citizen Children And Their Undocumented Parents, Ismael Mondragon May 2016

Addressing The Impact Of Deportation On Citizen Children And Their Undocumented Parents, Ismael Mondragon

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

A vast number of parents/children are been affected with high levels of anxiety, depression, and stress when their families are been separated due to deportation. Therefore, I conducted two sets of interviews, a parent component that consisted of eight questions and a child component that consisted of eleven questions. The interviews took approximately 10 minutes each. I interview a small group of six participants, three adults and three children who have gone through the devastated experience of having a family member deported. Hearing the participants experiences I learned that there are not enough programs in the community to help families …

Supporting The Education Of Youth Experiencing Homelessness In Monterey County, Samantha H. Engel-Ruck

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone project explored the issue of students experiencing homelessness within the public school setting, specifically in Monterey County. The amount of homeless students in our county is significant and needs to be addressed. Homeless students are prone to substance abuse, violence, increased sexual activity, malnutrition, and risk of dropping out. They face constant barriers while attending school and need the resources in order to obtain an education. The county of Monterey must provide equal access to the curriculum, link students with resources available in the county, and provide the opportunities they need in order to achieve a successful education. …

Integrating Improved Geriatric Content Into A Nursing Curriculum: Enhancing The Competencies Of Nursing Students In Gerontological Care, Sylvia Andrade May 2016

Integrating Improved Geriatric Content Into A Nursing Curriculum: Enhancing The Competencies Of Nursing Students In Gerontological Care, Sylvia Andrade

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The United States is facing a critical shortage of health care professionals who are trained in geriatrics. Among the health care professions, nursing, with more than 3 million members, comprises the largest segment of the nation’s health care workforce. New nurses entering this workforce find themselves caring for an extraordinarily large number of older patients with complex health care needs, regardless of the care setting. Currently, 36 million Americans are aged 65 or older. By 2030, that number will double. Accordingly, the need is significantly greater for more gerontologically trained registered nurses to address the complex health care needs of …

Sanitation Celebrations: Mierle Laderman Ukeles’S Performative Monument With/For/By Sanmen, Diya Vij May 2016

Sanitation Celebrations: Mierle Laderman Ukeles’S Performative Monument With/For/By Sanmen, Diya Vij

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that Mierle Laderman Ukeles’s work teaches us something new about what monument-making can be when it is socially engaged. The durational process and motivating desire to elicit gratitude for the DSNY labor force of Ukeles’s residency in the Sanitation Department raises pressing questions about the conventional nature of how monuments are typically conceived and executed and to whom these works are directed. Analysis of her three-part performance Sanitation Celebrations: Grand Finale of New York City’s First Art Parade, just one engagement within her long-term performative monument, explicates the intricacies of Ukeles’s process-based performative practice in terms …

With an increased amount of people seeking higher education, it has become vital to connect education to career in American colleges and universities. To better understand the value of education abroad, international educators must make this connection clear. This research examines student outcomes from Maryville College’s (MC) study abroad programs and compares them with human resource needs, with special attention given to the local job market in the surrounding area. A case study approach was used to gather data from MC study abroad returnees, local HR professionals, and national sources to understand where student outcomes are or are not lining …

Predicting Social Responsibility And Belonging In Urban After-School Physical Activity Programs With Underserved Children, Jeffry J. Martin, Brigid Byrd, Alex Garn, Nate Mccaughtry, Noel Kulik, Erin Centeio

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of this cross sectional study was to predict feelings of belonging and social responsibility based on the motivational climate perceptions and contingent self-worth of children participating in urban after-school physical activity programs. Three-hundred and four elementary school students from a major Midwestern city participated. Based on multiple regression analyses we predicted 39 % of the variance in feelings of belonging largely due to perceptions of leadership emotional support and task climate and 31 % of the variance in feelings of social responsibility largely due to perceptions of a caring climate. Our findings support the importance of after school …

Exploring Potential Connections Between Parental Divorce, Deviance And Negative Child Outcomes: A Literature Review, Haley Robertson May 2016

Exploring Potential Connections Between Parental Divorce, Deviance And Negative Child Outcomes: A Literature Review, Haley Robertson

Theses and Dissertations from 2016

Today, divorce is at an all-time high in the United States. Divorce not only impacts adults, but it greatly impacts children. The number of children affected by divorce has increased dramatically since the 1950s. Many studies over the years have linked juvenile delinquency, deviancy, and antisocial behavior to children who have experienced a parental divorce. I believe there is a connection between juvenile delinquency and parental divorce. In this paper, I will explore how existing research has proven that parental divorce and juvenile delinquency are connected. This article focuses on the impact of divorce on children through various characteristics such …

Underground Infrastructure: Planning, Development And Revitalization, Guoliang Meng

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

The challenges facing Liuzhou’s underground infrastructure system today are unlike any it has ever faced before. Frequent underground gas pipeline leaks and explosions are impacting the safety and quality of citizens’ lives. To develop a safe, efficient and economical underground infrastructure system, Liuzhou City will have to do three things: (1) create a unified administrative department for underground pipeline administration, (2) conduct a citywide underground pipeline survey by stages and create an information platform to share the underground pipeline data, and (3) develop a public-private partnership to construct a utility tunnel. The poster outlines these critical steps in Liuzhou’s underground …

Racial Disparities In Student Debt: Evidence From The Refund To Savings Initiative, Samuel H. Taylor, Dana C. Perantie, Nava Kantor, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Shenyang Guo, Ramesh Raghavan May 2016

Racial Disparities In Student Debt: Evidence From The Refund To Savings Initiative, Samuel H. Taylor, Dana C. Perantie, Nava Kantor, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Shenyang Guo, Ramesh Raghavan

Center for Social Development Research

This brief provides evidence that low- and moderate-income (LMI) Black households accumulate significantly more debt in pursuit of a higher education than do LMI White students, even after using rigorous methods to account for race- and debt-related confounders. Using data from the Refund to Savings experiment, the authors find that LMI Black households accrued $7,721 more in student loan debt than their White counterparts did. This finding is crucial in light of the financial vulnerability of this population both before and after college. That vulnerability potentially contributes to diminished returns and exacerbates racial disparities in educational outcomes and wealth accumulation. …

Educing Education Majors’ Reflections About After - School Literacy Tutoring: A Poetic Exploration, Janet C. Richards May 2016

Educing Education Majors’ Reflections About After - School Literacy Tutoring: A Poetic Exploration, Janet C. Richards

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Contemplating one's teaching has long been an essential part of teacher education. Accordingly, as an instructor of a literacy methods course with a tutoring component, I asked education majors in the class to send me weekly e-mail reflections about their teaching experiences. However, they had difficulty considering their lessons. I knew poetry stimulated introspections. Therefore, hoping to evoke the education majors' reflexivity, I requested they create two poems (middle and end of the semester) that portrayed their perceptions and dilemmas related to their teaching practices and lessons. Using constant comparative analysis, I explored the education majors' lyrical forms. Writing in …

A Social Network Analysis Of Active Transportation Policy Networks, Marissa Zwald May 2016

A Social Network Analysis Of Active Transportation Policy Networks, Marissa Zwald

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Background: In an effort to increase physical activity, communities are recognizing the importance of policy and environmental changes to facilitate active transportation. However, evidence on the policy partnerships and processes to achieve such policy and environmental changes, particularly in non-health sectors, is lacking. Methods: An online social network survey was administered in Fall 2015 to organizations engaged in active transportation policies in six cities across the United States. In addition to individual and organizational characteristics, relationships between organizations were assessed, including: level of collaboration around active transportation policies, frequency of contact, resource sharing to support active transportation, and perceived decisional …

Can We Walk? Environmental Supports For Active Travel In India, Deepti Adlakha May 2016

Can We Walk? Environmental Supports For Active Travel In India, Deepti Adlakha

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Background: Rapid rates of increase of obesity, diabetes, and associated chronic and co-morbid non-communicable diseases (e.g., cardiovascular diseases and some cancers) are being documented in India, yet in-country evidence-based research of associated risk factors is lacking. Physical activity has been identified as a preventative factor to counter the risk from obesity-related non-communicable diseases. Built environment supports for physical activity represent promising strategies to curb the rise in non-communicable diseases. Mounting research evidence suggests that the built environment can facilitate or constrain physical activity. However, a majority of this research has been conducted in developed nations. Built environment correlates of physical …

Exploring The Relationships Between Social Skills, Mental Health And Behavior In A Child Welfare Involved Population, Megan Anne Feely May 2016

Exploring The Relationships Between Social Skills, Mental Health And Behavior In A Child Welfare Involved Population, Megan Anne Feely

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Promoting child well-being is one of the three primary goals of the child welfare system. In contrast to safety and permanency, the other two primary goals, that are precisely defined in the federal statute, well-being remains undefined and poorly understood. Recently, the Administration on Children Youth and Families (ACYF) highlighted one facet of child well-being -- social and emotional well-being -- as a particular focus of the agency. These categories, i.e. behavior, emotional development and social functioning collectively are referred to as social and emotional well-being. The relationship between these constructs is unknown although it is likely that they are …

Suicide Attempts From Adolescence Into Young Adulthood: A System Dynamics Perspective For Intervention And Prevention, Saras Yu Chung May 2016

Suicide Attempts From Adolescence Into Young Adulthood: A System Dynamics Perspective For Intervention And Prevention, Saras Yu Chung

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Though the reduction of suicide-related deaths has been a national priority for over a decade (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2001) and over $22 million per year (National Institutes of Health, 2015) have been invested to prevent suicide, rates of suicide have not declined (CDC, 2012). In fact, for some groups of adolescents, these rates seem to be on the ride (Wasserman, Cheng, & Jiang, 2005). The ineffectiveness in reducing deaths by suicide despite increased funding and coordinated efforts suggests the need for a new perspective on examining why and how adolescents begin to desire and attempt suicide …

The Role Of Physical Activity Enjoyment In The Pathways From Social And Physical Environments To Physical Activity Of Early Adolescent Girls, Elizabeth Lauren Budd May 2016

The Role Of Physical Activity Enjoyment In The Pathways From Social And Physical Environments To Physical Activity Of Early Adolescent Girls, Elizabeth Lauren Budd

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In 2013, only 27.1 % of adolescents (age 10-19) met the daily physical activity (PA) recommendations of 60 minutes of PA a day. 1 Inactivity is highly prevalent among youth and especially prevalent among adolescents. This inactivity can have harmful and costly, immediate and long-term repercussions on physical, mental, and social health.28 Health behaviors throughout childhood, including PA, are predictive of health behaviors throughout adulthood.9 Girls experience the steepest decline in PA in early adolescence compared to boys and any other age group, which positions them on a lifelong trajectory of inactivity and increased risk for disease.2,4 Among early adolescent …
