Pedestrian Travel-Time Maps For Chignik, Alaska: An Anisotropic Model To Support Tsunami Evacuation Planning, A.E. Macpherson, D.J. Nicolsky, R.D. Koehler
Alaska Earthquake Center Reports
Tsunami-induced pedestrian evacuation for the community of Chignik is evaluated using an anisotropic modeling approach developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. The method is based on path-distance algorithms and accounts for variations in land cover and directionality in the slope of terrain. We model evacuation of pedestrians to the tsunami hazard zone boundary and to predetermined assembly areas. Pedestrian travel-time maps are computed for two cases: for travel across all viable terrain or by roads only. Results presented here are intended to provide guidance to local emergency management agencies for tsunami inundation assessment, evacuation planning, and public education to mitigate …

Alaska Results First Initiative: Progress Report & Initial Findings, Araceli Valle, Brad A. Myrstol
AJiC Reports
This report presents the initial results of Alaska’s Results First Initiative, which is examining both the effectiveness and the efficiency of the state's adult criminal justice programs by conducting a comprehensive review of the full array of programs funded by the state. The review includes a thorough inventory of state-funded programs, determining the proportion of those programs that are evidence-based, and detailing both the costs of operating those programs, as well as the benefits derived from them via reductions in offender recidivism. The Alaska Results First Iniative is a participant in the Pew-MacArthur Results First Initiative, a "smart justice" approach …

Safety Data Management: Gathering And Using The Data, Robert A. Perkins, F. Lawrence Bennett
INE Project Reports
How are roadway crash data acquired, stored, and utilized in engineering and management decisions regarding highway projects? This research answers that question by interviewing the engineers and professionals involved with that safety data management from six states and asking – How are safety (crash) data acquired and used in their states. Since most safety projects are funded by the federal FHWA, through the HSIP, the general flow of the safety data is similar in the states interviewed. But there are many differences in details, especially the computer hardware and software. The methods of data movement between the responder and the …

Motivation For Change In Heroin And Opiate Users, Andrew W. Peterson, Sarah Callahan, Leonard A. Jason
Motivation For Change In Heroin And Opiate Users, Andrew W. Peterson, Sarah Callahan, Leonard A. Jason
DePaul Discoveries
Opioid and heroin abuse is a continuing problem in the United States that has been increasing dramatically since 2000. Common treatment programs tend to use methadone and behavioral therapies that do not focus on motivational factors despite the research suggesting it is an important element to treatment retention and sustained abstinence. Motivation for the purposes of this study is defined as an individual’s inner reasons for change. The current study focused on differences in motivation for change among different substance abusers. We found that opiate and heroin abusers had higher motivational scores in comparison to other substance abusers. These results …

Scientific Eventuality Or Science Fiction: The Future Of People With Different Abilities, Deedee M. Bennett
Scientific Eventuality Or Science Fiction: The Future Of People With Different Abilities, Deedee M. Bennett
Public Administration Faculty Publications
Consider this, we are living in a future [in-part] imagined over 30 years ago- in science fiction film and books. We may envision that 30 years from now we could live in a future with technology developed from the concepts we see in science fiction today. In this paper, the concepts of disability are challenged in the future based on the technologies imagined in the science fiction genre of the present and past. Focused on the sub-genre, Cyberpunk, current mainstream, as well as new emerging technologies inspired by science fiction are reviewed. Future disability is reimagined dependent on continued support …
